On the eve of the upcoming holidays and sales, I think my story about the main phablet (for Huawei, of course) of the outgoing year - Mate 8 will be very relevant. I've been using this smartphone for two months now, it's good that I didn't rush to write this review after two weeks of using the G8. It would be, perhaps, an accurate, but not the most honest story. The smartphone makes me happy with its work all the time, from the moment the parcel is received from the courier's hands. Perhaps, for me, the Mate 8 has become the most uncompromising device. A smartphone without unnecessary excuses and excuses, fulfilling its 100% price (not Russian, of course).

By the way, the price for a "gray" device in the range of 25-30 thousand rubles from foreign online stores seems to be quite optimal. At the same time, as far as I know (hello, Google; hello, the official website of Huawei), the gadget is no longer on sale in our country. It seems that it was even once imported officially into our country, but in a limited edition. I won’t wonder why local distributors and hucksters didn’t like it (sorry, but sometimes you cannot name a Russian retailer otherwise), but I liked the smartphone. Therefore, it makes sense to pay attention to it, even my copy, which became the hero of the review, was not developed for the Russian market, but it still works great with all Russian mobile operators.

The smartphone comes in a big box. You can immediately see the swing over the box - for businessmen, for brutal serious people, for accomplished comrades and ordinary Russian students like me. In general, the design of the box goes well with the smartphone itself. The cardboard is dense, not scratched or wrinkled. At the bottom of the box you can find three small boxes with documentation, cable and adapter for charging, headphones.

No, this is not a letter from Hogwarts. What a pity to realize that ... Inside it is not an invitation from Dumbledore, but some kind of explanation in Chinese.

In the box you can find a dense soft silicone case. The protection of such a case is practically maximum in case of falls and hits. The cover itself is soft, it will not be scratched. If you put this case on your smartphone, the dimensions of the device will increase so much that you will begin to feel discomfort. The coating is soft, which means that such a cover cannot be reached from a tight pocket of trousers or jeans. If you do manage to put it there, then something is wrong with you. A cover for the sake of a tick, the bundle dilutes, and there is not much real use in it due to the inconvenience in operation.

Charging unit for 2 A. The smartphone is charged in about two hours to 100% (the website states that it takes 2.5 hours). Fast charging really is. During charging, the body of the device does not heat up, the charging block does not heat up.

The headphones have as many as 4 holes on the case, which supposedly create a stereo effect. I did not feel any stereo effect, as I did not feel the convenience of using these headphones. They constantly fall out of the ears. Yes, the appearance is 100% original (almost), but these headphones have only two scenarios of use: a desk drawer or a trash can. I just don't understand how Huawei manages to keep making such uncomfortable headphones for two years now. By the way, on the wire there were traces of the black box in which they were lying, which I could not wipe off. Black boxes are evil, such headphones are evil.

By the way, the remote control with three buttons is able to simultaneously adjust the volume and control playback (including flipping songs in both directions).

Before proceeding to a detailed study of the device case, let's dwell on the oversights of mine and the people who developed this device. I am almost always careful with my devices. Before us is a device from the category of "premium". Here, not only the highest price segment, but also special materials of manufacture. As far as I understand, the body is made of steel (it turned out, it seems, an aluminum alloy), at least from metal for sure. The metal at the ends is brittle. It crumbles into small pieces when dropped. Of course, the whole body will not be able to crumble, but it will be unpleasant anyway. Aluminum bends and crumples, metal crumbles, can't you please sir?

Please. Let it not be scratched at least. I tried to show it in the photo, but in the photo in low resolution it is difficult to notice the scratches on the ends. There are many of them, they are here. The polished edge is too large in size, it kind of cuts into the hand, and the smartphone sits confidently in it. The smartphone sits even more confidently in the hand in the cold! It just freezes. It is completely made of metal, now it is becoming more and more difficult to hold it in your hand. But we will return to the cold in Krasnodar even later. I'm already starting to miss the Snapdragon 800-powered plastic flagships that heat up to the temperature of a pan on the stove upon logging into Facebook.

Another point that haunts me is related to the glass on the front panel. Scratching? It scratches ... Not quickly and not immediately, but gradually micro-scratches appear. The glass is made using 2.5D technology. But it’s not like that here. The edges of the glass are pointed, it protrudes noticeably above the body. This is not the usual 2.5D glass, which smoothly flows into the side edges. In this case, it abruptly goes to the ends. I'm afraid to imagine what would happen if you drop your smartphone glass down. Not a sandwich, but you might have to collect the shards.

The display has a good oleophobic coating, but in the sun, fingerprints are visible on the glass. They are especially visible on the black glossy bottom insert, which is also covered with glass, like the display. From time to time you have to remember about a rag. But this is a problem for all smartphones in a dark case.

At the ends, everything is too traditional to comment on something. The infrared port disappeared somewhere ... MicroUSB connector, only one speaker, two microphones, the slot is opened with a paper clip. In general, everything is as Steve Jobs once bequeathed. The location of the buttons is convenient, they are made of metal.

Before us is almost a typical flagship phablet, it just doesn't burn or explode.

The smartphone screen is good. Brightness is sufficient in the sun, auto brightness control works accurately. Indoors at night in the absence of artificial light sources around the display brightness you want to turn down. The minimum brightness limit is rather high for comfortable use, it takes some time to get used to the screen in the dark. There are no questions about the display and its quality. This is a 6-inch IPS-matrix with FullHD resolution. I consider this resolution to be optimal both for my eyes and for the autonomy of the device. Of course, VR on such a screen will cause rejection, but for the purposes of virtual reality, it is worth choosing other devices.

The bezels are thin, and the display area relative to the entire front panel is almost 79%. The unusual 2.5D glass covered with Gorilla Glass 4 has not only a marketing charm, but also quite real. Pixel density 367 ppi, polarizing layer present, aspect ratio 16: 9, 10 simultaneous clicks supported. In other words, the display is good for everything, from natural colors (they can be adjusted) to picture contrast at maximum viewing angles.

The trend of the season is a bulging camera. It sticks out slightly, the lens is not scratched in the course of everyday use.

The dimensions are as follows: 80.6 mm / 157.1 mm / 7.9 mm. Quite usual dimensions, which do not interfere with the comfortable operation of the device. The device weighs 185 grams. The only thing that confuses me a little is the fact that from time to time there are visible stains on the back panel, which are noticeable in the light. The rag has to be actively used.

The greatest strength of a smartphone of this size and thickness is its autonomy. Yes, there are examples when it was possible to fit a more capacious battery into a similar case, but here everything is fine with the battery life. The 4000 mAh battery is capable of giving odds to any flagship. For two days in moderate use, the smartphone will hold out without problems. I charge my phone every day in the evening, while always about 40% of the charge remains in the smartphone. In my usage mode, the battery lasts for a day and a half. For me, this is an important indicator, if not the main one at the moment. I stopped carrying a power bank with me in my bag, I feel freer. This makes me happy. Perhaps this is what I liked the smartphone in the first place.

If the battery charge is rapidly approaching the border between life and death, then the screen resolution can always be downgraded to HD. The fonts become looser and more contrasting, but the autonomy of the smartphone increases. In general, no black and white modes (and these are tradeoffs) are needed with a normal battery capacity. It makes no sense to worry about switching battery power saving modes in the settings either, you will win at best 30 minutes.

Talk time on 2G is about 19 hours, on 3G - about 17 hours. The battery is non-removable, and the charging adapter has the following characteristics: 9 V / 2 A. The battery is discharged most of all while watching a video, this parameter is traditionally not very well optimized in the company's devices. However, for the whole season of The Walking Dead, one battery charge is enough for you.

The "heart" of the smartphone is the proprietary processor KIRIN 950 (16 nm, 64 bits, 8 cores, 1.8 GHz and 2.3 GHz), and the "atrium" is the Mali-T880 (4 cores, 900 MHz). LPDDR4 RAM - 3 GB (in my case, 4 GB - in the premium version). It seems that in the regular model the RAM is single-channel, in the premium version it is dual-channel. The operating memory frequency is 1333 MHz. The RAM coprocessor - i5 is responsible for its smooth operation.

What does all of this mean? This means that your smartphone (if it's the Mate 8) is very cool for absolutely any task. Practical tests have shown that the smartphone is very fast. I also noticed one important feature - the smartphone is fast. Works quickly after installing 30 programs (running in the background) and two months of use. Cool? Not that word. You know, Huawei doesn’t have to. Now there are some jambs with the work of applications, then with the work of the interface. Everything is great here, starting from the stability of applications, the speed of the device, the timeliness of notifications. Just a find. Comparable in speed is the Nexus 6p, but it has long since turned into a pixel pumpkin. It's amazing how this particular device turned out.

The smartphone did not pass the stress test. At the same time, he coped with all the other synthetic tests without problems.

The smartphone interface is simple and straightforward. It's Halloween gloomy and eerie. However, nothing new. The smartphone is running Android 6.0.1, the proprietary shell EMUI 4.1 is installed.

The auto sync icon is gone from the shortcut bar. Now only 9 icons are placed on that panel, the same number are hidden, there is no quick access to them.

The Gallery is of particular interest. Convenient sorting and grouping of photos. Simple gestures (moving up a photo) to transmit. A detailed view of information about the photo is available.

The video player has degraded a little. Now you can not display thumbnails with active playback on top of other windows. There are almost no settings. There is only one audio effect (DTS), and that is only available in wired headphones.

The music player, following the video player, lost its functionality somewhere along the way. There is no detailed sound setting. Of course, the installation of additional software decides everything, but I'm not used to living like this and looking for difficult paths. I'd rather write a meaningless long text about applications of political parties than look for a good player in the Market. There is only one audio setting, it works only with headphones.

The sound quality in the headphones (not supplied) left a not very pleasant feeling. It feels like they forgot to add some kind of audio chip to this smartphone. But there is a Hi6402 audio chip, which is integrated at the processor level. The sound is slightly rough, of average quality. The volume reserve is not very large, at the level of Samsung. Remembering the sound and comparing it with the Mate 8, I start to get a little upset. I will not say that the sound is terrible here - you just need to listen to it, it is not so rich and bright. The call loudspeaker is slightly above average in strength, its sound is also quite ordinary. Compared with Honor 6. So Honor 6 in terms of music was not only more interesting, but also louder. The phablet does not shine with audio capabilities, but they cannot be called terrible or insufficient. Middling in this regard.

The pre-installed software does not differ in anything interesting. There are a dozen of non-removable brand utilities and a dozen of non-removable Google services installed here.

HiCare is a quick support app. Of course, Russia is not on the list of countries with active and constant support, but there is Belarus. A strange coincidence, doesn't it?

At any time, you can adjust the audio volume for media, call, conversation and alarm. But what about notifications, comrades? By holding down the "volume down" key, you can instantly start a silent vibration mode, an additional button on the screen can achieve absolute noiselessness.

The incoming call menu looks inconspicuous. Inconspicuous until you turn on the speakerphone. The microphone control chip will be useful if you communicate on speakerphone in the office or on the road. But will you be there to communicate on speakerphone? Only if the speaker fails?

The phone book has not changed since the 18th CCP Congress. You can configure the display of calls for both SIM cards. HD Voice technology control is available if provided by the operator. QR codes can be generated in the phone book. But what will you do with them later on another device if the information is not automatically transferred as a contact to another device when scanning?

An adapted version of Swype is used instead of the standard keyboard. Looks a little old, but works well. I don't want to change the keyboard. In any case, I haven't changed it yet. By the way, emoticons without visual design can be used either by a person with a phenomenal memory, or by a psychic. Of course, I remember all the MK Ultimate combinations from my first Sega game console, but I would not like to memorize the digital / symbolic look of emoticons.

The smartphone can take long screenshots. How to do it? Make a regular screen, and when saving, the smartphone itself will offer to make it a long-term version. Great. After you have made a screen, it is very easy to crop, you can make notes on it. Quite often, I've made notes on the Note 4 this way. Now you can forget about the Galaxy Note (in every sense), Huawei has successfully implemented a similar functionality of the notes on the screen.

There are no problems with the connection quality. The microphones work perfectly, the volume of the earpiece is sufficient, the volume margin is literally one or two divisions. A smart smartphone fulfills the capabilities and responsibilities of a simple phone to the fullest, it pleases. It seems to me that this smartphone will work in all ranges, in which only smartphones on the planet can work. Here it is, the traveler's dream. Works great with our networks. Communication keeps confidently everywhere.

Deeper, deeper in the settings, interesting features of the device are hidden. Remove the speed of your network connection (a very useful informer in the status bar) and pull out the second SIM card. Take screenshots of the top of the screen and send them to your friends. Everyone now thinks you have an iPhone.

You can create profiles. This means that you can register twice in What "s App. Maybe this information will be useful to you. In any case, such small" nishyachyachki "(I do not like this word, but I try to keep up with the times) make using a smartphone more versatile and convenient ...

A fingerprint sensor is a different story. First, it's fast. Very fast at recognizing one of any of the five registered fingers. Secondly, it is integrated into the interface and performs various functions. For example, I no longer reach for the top panel, but open the shortcut panel by sliding my finger across the scanner. Thirdly, the sensor does not work in the cold. Literally one minute outside in the cold season, and that's it - the sensor stops responding. As soon as the body of the smartphone is warmed up in the room or by the effort of the hand in the pocket, the fingerprint sensor starts working. It's just an amazing situation that I see for the first time. Yes, it also stops responding to wet fingers in hot conditions. It was quite hot in September; in warm weather he did not recognize fingerprints very well.

The smartphone perfectly recognizes clicks with gloves. Tested. The thinner the glove, the less accurate the responses. Yes Yes exactly. He responds without any problems to the touch of thick mittens. Gestures and movements are typical.

For some reason, the mini-window is not displayed in the screenshots. Its size can be changed. Autosync data (enabling and disabling) is available only in the settings.

Built-in memory 32 GB. Available to the user about 24 GB, the format of the built-in NAND flash memory. Instead of a second SIM card, you can try to install a memory card. By the way, after changing the memory card or SIM card, the smartphone does not need to be rebooted, everything starts working instantly. How did they learn this? Let them teach Korean brand engineers and designers.

There is little interesting about accessibility. There is no Huawei Pay yet, unfortunately.

As for the wireless interfaces and sensors, the smartphone has everything you need to fully satisfy the geek: NFC, 802.11a \\ b \\ g \\ n \\ ac, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.2, OTA, DLNA, OTG, VoLTE and more. a dozen other protocols. MHL is not supported, alas. In vain, I once bought cables on Ali, which everyone refused with the advent of fast charging. The age of cloud technology, what can I say. But in the age of cloud technologies, Huawei has found a place under the body of the device for an FM antenna. There is support for FM radio. By the way, in many countries the number of radio listeners is not decreasing rapidly, so in vain are many manufacturers trying to abandon radio and replace it with Internet broadcasting.

You can start dual-window mode by swiping across the display or by holding down the task button. The screen is divided into two fields with a choice of shortcuts. The screens can be swapped and resized. Conveniently. With long-term use of the dual-window mode, there is a slight throttling of the processor (once I worked for half a day with mail and office), the device itself heats up slightly.

Obviously, smartphones with a screen diagonal of no more than five inches are considered convenient for communication and carrying with you. However, if the gadget is used, for example, to watch a video or as a navigator in a car, then a large screen diagonal is required. For such purposes, the Huawei Mate 8 smartpad was created. Let's see how the new "Chinese" can please.

Specifications and performance

  • Octa-core Huawei Kirin 950 processor clocked at 2.3 GHz;
  • video accelerator Mali-T880 MP4;

As you can see, the hardware of the Huawei Mate 8 is solid. The performance is more than sufficient for the smooth operation of the interface and most everyday applications. There are no problems when watching videos in high definition. You can also play modern 3D games on your smartphone without any problems.

Appearance

The appearance of the device is flagship. The case is metal, its thickness is 7.9 mm. The surface is matte, therefore, there are no fingerprints on it, and the smartphone does not slip in the hand. The manufacturer offers four color options for the case: silver, black, golden and golden brown. The assembly of the case is perfect, the smartphone feels monolithic, there are no squeaks even with strong twisting.

The front panel is covered with 2.5D protective glass. The side frames around are very thin. Despite the six-inch screen, the Huawei Mate 8 doesn't look like a clumsy shovel. The smartphone is convenient to use with one hand.

Screen

The 6-inch screen has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, it is impossible to detect pixelation with the naked eye, the picture is clear, the colors are natural and saturated. The tilt angles are maximal, the device can be tilted as you like, and the image quality does not change at all. The display has high contrast and correct color reproduction, which can be adjusted to suit your needs.

The maximum brightness is sufficient for using the device in bright sunlight, the smallest font is easy to read. The light sensor intelligently and quickly adjusts to the environment. Multi-touch confidently and clearly perceives up to ten simultaneous touches.

Camera

The Huawei Mate 8 has a 16-megapixel camera made by Sony. The main camera is equipped with a dual LED flash and autofocus. There are a lot of functions and settings in the application, there is even a "professional" mode, which offers fine settings. The quality of the pictures that the Huawei Mate 8 camera produces at the highest level is sufficient under any conditions. It should be noted that the automatic mode also allows you to get clear and beautiful pictures.

The front camera is equipped with an 8-megapixel autofocus sensor. She perfectly copes with video calls and gives out beautiful selfies that you are not ashamed to post on social networks.

Outcome

We can confidently call it a flagship model. It is well thought out in terms of ergonomics, it has a large and high-quality screen, powerful hardware and great cameras. Also pleasing is the 4000 mAh rechargeable battery, which allows you to use the smartphone all day without interruption. The Huawei Mate 8 is available for $ 490.

Video review Huawei Mate 8

The Huawei Mate 8 is a stylish smartpad for the business segment. This is indicated by both the technical characteristics and design of this device, as well as the dimensions of its 6-inch screen. This gadget was presented to the general public at CES 2015. It replaced the previous iteration of smartphones. According to the Chinese developers, they did not plan to redraw the look of the device. Rather, it can be called a kind of work on bugs and updating the successful Huawei Mate 7.

Equipment

Huawei Mate 8 comes in a beautiful black cardboard box, the front of which is decorated with the model name printed in gold letters.

Everything is stacked in the box in floors. Above there is a special box for the Huawei Mate 8. Under it there are 3 boxes with accessories. The smartpad is equipped with a bumper that can be used to protect the ends, a set of documents, a paper clip for removing the nano-SIM tray, a stereo headset, a power adapter with a current of up to 2 A, and a USB cable.

Design

An overview of the Huawei Mate 8 smartphone is impossible without a detailed consideration of the design of the device. The device has a truly flagship design: 100% metal body, small, for a 6-inch display. The case is only 7.9 millimeters thick and is sandblasted with a matte finish.

The flat sides of the smartphone have a rolled metal texture. Shiny bevels trim the edges. Strict headbands look very stylish and noble. The phone is available in brown, black and silver colors. The build quality of the case is almost perfect, it does not deform and does not produce any sounds during various manipulations.

The front of the Huawei Mate 8 is covered with a protective 2.5D high-strength glass. The display occupies 86% of the front. The fields below and above are decorated with the finest drawing in the form of funny circles, which can be seen only at a certain angle and only in extremely bright lighting. The field below contains the manufacturer's logo, above which there are virtual control keys.

In the center above the smartphone display there is a speaker, to the right of which you can see the front camera lens, as well as light level sensors.

The back cover of Huawei Mate 8, made of aluminum, is non-removable. It has perfectly fitted plastic inserts in the same color as the body of the device.

Above the rear panel in the center, you can see the main camera housed in an aluminum disc, decorated with a shiny bezel. There is a dual LED flash on the left, under which is a fingerprint sensor with a shiny bevel.

The right side of the smartphone is equipped with a power activation key and a volume rocker.

The left side is equipped with an openable staple tray for 2 nano-SIM cards.

At the top of the Huawei Mate 8 there is a 3.5mm audio output and a microphone hole.

In the central part of the bottom end there is a micro-USB port, on the sides of which a pair of grilles is symmetrically located, under them are microphones and an audio speaker.

There is also a standard decoration for Huawei smartphones - a pair of star screws.

Display

Mate 8 received a 6-inch IPS matrix with FullHD resolution (1080 × 1920). The pixel density level is 368 dots per inch. The Huawei Mate 8 looks rather weak compared to competing devices, which have this figure exceeding 500, but the quality of the screen itself should not be evaluated, but not the numbers. It is impossible to see any jagged fonts or pixelation here without a magnifying glass. This is not the most correct technique in terms of image, however, in terms of operating comfort, everything is fine.

The capacitive touch surface of the Huawei Mate 8 is capable of recognizing 10 simultaneous touches. It is possible to use the device with gloves, although without much convenience, but, in any case, you can accept or drop a call.

The maximum brightness of the screen is 490 cd / m2, and the lowest is 49 cd / m2. Due to the absence of a special air gap and the presence of a polarizing filter, the user will be able to comfortably use the device even in bright light.

The lowest black field level is 0.33 cd / m2, which is quite good for an LCD screen. The contrast ratio is also decent - 1310: 1. The use of LCD, and not the more modern AMOLED, has led to the fact that the quality of the contrasting image pleases more than the huge resolution, but on a small screen.

The situation with the color of the Huawei Mate 8 screen is so-so. The gamma reaches a value of 2.11, which is not fatal against the standard of 2.2. But the average DeltaE deviation of 5.37 is not encouraging. This deviation is explained by the fact that the color gamut significantly exceeds the sRGB standards.

The color temperature of the screen of Huawei Mate 8 is 7500K, which is "colder" than the norm of 6500K. This is not critical, because in the settings you can easily switch color profiles, adjusting them to your liking.

Excellent viewing angles are made in the best traditions of IPS: even with a significant deviation from the perpendicular, color distortion does not occur, and the contrast drops slightly.

Sound

Despite a pair of decorative grilles located at the bottom of the Huawei Mate 8, there is only one speaker under them, the maximum volume of which is not impressive. The angle of coverage of the microphone is 125 °, which is extremely important for a loud communication option.

There is a DTS audio enhancement option in the headphone settings. The sound quality in the headphones is good. The Music application can play FLAC files.

You can listen to the radio through an FM tuner, for which you need to connect a wired headset that functions as a short-wave antenna. The presence of 3 microphones allows high-quality sound recording by means of a dictaphone with a highly efficient noise suppression system in the special modes "Interview" and "Meeting".

Cameras

The main camera of the Huaiwei Mate 8 uses a 16-megapixel Sony IMX298 sensor, the maximum aperture of the lens is f / 2.0. The LED dual flash is capable of illuminating the subject in continuous and pulsed modes.

With the vertical orientation of the Huawei Mate 8 on the main screen at the top, you can see the icons for setting the flash, going to the menu for switching modes and changing cameras (main / front).

5 links to special shooting modes are located in a line along the bottom edge:

  • "Time period";
  • "Video mode";
  • "Photo mode";
  • "Decoration";
  • "Shine".

Switching between these modes is carried out by horizontal movement on the surface of the screen. Under the line there are icons for calling up a menu of various special effects filters and going to the gallery, as well as a shutter button.

There are 9 items in the special shooting modes menu:

  • "Text recognition";
  • "Audio notes";
  • "Slowdown";
  • "Water marks";
  • "Autofocus";
  • Professional mode;
  • "Night shooting";
  • Panoramic special mode.

The professional mode assumes a manual option for adjusting the parameters of photography, which are displayed in the form of icons located in an arc. Using another similar scale, parameters are selected for making adjustments, which include: white balance, type of focusing, exposure compensation, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity level. If necessary, this scale can be easily collapsed by touching the arrow.

Only the aspect ratio and resolution can be adjusted via the video and photo shooting parameters in the main menu. Other points are related to all kinds of auxiliary autofocus capabilities, the use of on-screen and physical keys.

The Huawei Mate 8's camera can shoot excellently in auto mode in good light. Quite good shots can be obtained with night photography. In the most challenging conditions, Prof mode is best for high-performance shooting. In a special mode called "Light" for high-quality shooting you should use special accessories - a tripod and a clamp.

The main camera is capable of shooting panoramas at high resolution and perfectly matches the exposure option for individual frames. But this program is not capable of removing all kinds of quickly moving objects from the middle and foreground.

In the special mode "Focus" you can take pictures in a special, original, special format. This is a stack, consisting of several photos, which allows, during the work with the captured photographic material, to enable the correction of the distance of the photographing and record the images in separate files.

The front camera is equipped with an 8-megapixel sensor and a lens with a strictly fixed photo focus without a flash. Its aperture is f / 2.4. She does an excellent job of photographing self-portraits, giving out high-quality, clear photographs with competent color rendition in daylight.

Memory and memory card

The smartphone is offered in two versions: with 4 Gb of RAM and 64 Gb of internal memory and with 3 Gb of "RAM" and 32 Gb of internal memory.

We are reviewing the Huawei Mate 8 with 32 GB and 3 Gb "RAM". Of the 32 Gb of internal memory, no more than 24 Gb is available to the user. It should be recalled that the tested Mate 7 had only 16 Gb. The memory of Mate 8 can be increased by inserting a 128 Gb micro-SD / XC / HC memory card instead of the second SIM card (the previous model was limited to 64 gigs). In addition, support for a special USB-OTG technology makes it possible to connect a flash drive.

Communication

Huawei Mate 8 works with a pair of nano-SIM cards in Dual stand-by mode: these two cards have only one transmitter. Thus, during activity on one SIM card, the second is deactivated. The smartphone works with SIM cards according to the standard scheme, there are no special features here.

The Huawei Mate 8 smartphone supports NFC, bluetooth 4.2 LE, wi-fi 802.11ac in addition to standard n / g / b. There is support for LTE of the 6th category, capable of transmitting data at a speed of more than 300 Mb / s. On the territory of our state, there are no problems with LTE, the list contains the necessary ranges.

Mate 8 supports navigation systems such as BeiDou (PRC), Glonass, GPS-A, GPS. The phone functions perfectly in navigation mode - it instantly searches for satellites. It takes 15 seconds for the Mate 8 to connect to 20 satellites with 6-meter accuracy. In general, this 6-inch smartphone may well be used by car owners as a navigator.

Battery life and performance

This smartpad uses a non-removable battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh. With extremely intense loads and 75 percent brightness, the device can last almost all day without recharging.

In moderate operating mode, the smartphone can work for about 30 hours, and when the power-saving mode is activated, even more than 2 days.

In addition, a fully charged battery of the discussed smartphone allows:

Watch videos at maximum brightness for 10 hours;

Play graphically "heavy" video games (for example, "WoT") - 5 hours;

The smartphone supports fast charging, which allows you to charge the battery by 70% in 30 minutes.

Together with Mate 8, the debut of the new 8-core HiSilicon Kirin 950 chipset, created according to the 16-nm process technology by the Taiwanese company TSMC, took place. It has 4 powerful ARM Cortex-A72 cores at 2.3 GHz and 4 Cortex-A53 cores at 1.8 GHz.

High-quality processing of graphic data is provided by the ARM Mali-T880 MP4 accelerator with 4 execution units with a frequency of 900 MHz.

The Smart i5 coprocessor is responsible for the functioning of the fingerprint scanner and other sensors. In addition to the newest ISP for image processing, the chipset integrates an LTE modem that supports Cat.6 and a dual-channel LPDDR4 / LPDDR3 memory controller.

The performance of the Kirin 950 processor is 100% more than that of the Kirin 925, which was used in the previous version of the smartphone, the energy efficiency is 70%, and the graphics accelerator is 126% more powerful. Despite this, the latest processor is noticeably inferior to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 and Samsung Exons 8890.

Operating system

The Huawei Mate 8 smartphone operates on the basis of the Android 6.0 OS with the EMUI 4.0 shell. Huaiwei, as before, "shoveled" the entire Android, trying to improve it and make it more functional. The device supports Smart Dial and Russian language, there are a lot of settings for the phone's behavior, proprietary applications for solving a variety of tasks, starting with notes and ending with a file manager.

Outcome

Taking a detailed review of the Huawei Mate 8, we can say that it is a truly balanced modern smartphone, quite worthy of its flagship status. The powerful stuffing does not prevent this device from working autonomously for a long time.

Other pluses of this flagship include a compact and beautiful body, extremely narrow frames around the screen, an excellent camera with an optical stabilization system, and a fast-working fingerprint scanner.

The only drawback of the Huawei Mate 8 is its high $ 800 price tag. The screen resolution, which is low for a flagship smartphone, and the absence of a separate memory card slot do not seem to be too big disadvantages.

Video review Huawei Mate 8

The above review perfectly complements the Huawei Mate 8 video review. It will allow you to finally understand what this smartphone is and how much it suits you.

The Ascend sub-brand no longer exists - the predecessor of the Mate 8, we recall, bore the name Ascend Mate 7 - now Huawei got rid of the additional word in the name as unnecessary. And this is for the best - why produce entities. Recall that the Mate 7 was a very successful model - it was from this model that Huawei began to be perceived as a really serious smartphone manufacturer, not only in terms of the number of handsets sold, but also in terms of production. Very good both in terms of characteristics and impressions from working with it, the Mate 7 sagged a little, except in terms of the performance of the proprietary Kirin 925 platform, and did not have a sufficiently high-quality camera.

In the fall, we developed the ideas of the Mate 7 in a slightly more compact model Mate S with an improved system-on-a-chip, AMOLED display, but at the same time with a less capacious battery. Now let's talk about a full-fledged update of the Mate 7 - with the same six-inch screen (again IPS, again Full HD), about the same battery, but with improvements in all other characteristics. Is Apple iPhone 6s Plus and Samsung GALAXY Note 5 worth to be afraid of a beginner -or does the Chinese flagship pose no threat to them?

Appearance and ergonomics

The design has not changed too much compared to the Mate 7 - the general outlines remained the same, all the changes affected the details. But it doesn't even come to mind to compare the device with some HTC. Firstly, the smartphones of the Taiwanese company have changed a lot, take a look at at least the One M9 + or One A9. Secondly, the junior models of the Honor line (for example, the 5X) have adopted many solutions - and now this style can already be called a proprietary one for Huawei, if, of course, it is possible to discern some “family” features in it. Huawei's smartphones are nice, but, subjectively, they still lack some corporate character.

Huawei Mate 8, front panel: above the display are the earpiece, front camera, ambient light sensor and miniature status indicator

Huawei Mate 8, rear panel: at the top there is a camera module with a dual LED flash, under it is a fingerprint scanner; above and below we see plastic inserts above the antennas

The Mate 8 is no exception, although there is nothing to find fault with on formal grounds: the body is made of metal and tempered glass, the assembly is excellent, the colors are interesting (gold, silver, gray, chocolate) - but can you distinguish Huawei from other top smartphones at first glance? ? However, such claims can now be made against many, starting with Apple.

There are practically no frames around the display - due to this, it was possible to save a lot of dimensions and the Mate 8 turned out to be more compact than many smartphones with a smaller display diagonal.

It also became even thinner than the Mate 7 due to its less protruding camera. In general, it turned out funny. Last time, the thickness was stated at 7.9 mm, now we are told that it was possible to reduce it by 0.4 mm - and it turned out ... 7.9 mm. Amazing things are happening, almost on a Bulgakov scale. However, just as it was impossible to make claims to Mate 7 - you are supposedly too fat - you cannot find fault with Mate 8 either. It is rather too thin - because of this it is not very comfortable to hold it; but the usability of 6-inch smartphones is generally a separate topic that can be debated forever.

Huawei Mate 8, right side: a standard set of a volume rocker and a power key located under it

Huawei Mate 8, left-hand side: single slot for both nanoSIM cards and microSD card

Other differences from the Mate 7: the main speaker moved to the lower edge, which now does not overlap if the smartphone is lying on the back; reduced "swelling" of the back panel; reshaped camera module and fingerprint scanner; a single slot for two SIM-cards and a memory card (previously there was one SIM card, and there were two slots).

Lived. Smartphone manufacturers are now measuring who has a more accurate and faster fingerprint scanner - at least that is what Huawei bragged about at the presentation of the device in Las Vegas. And bragged about the case. The Mate 8 uses Android 6.0 with a default scanner, so you didn't even need to create your own software.

The scanner works very quickly and error-free, allowing you to unlock your device in the blink of an eye. It is noteworthy that it is suitable not only for unlocking: there is also the ability to take photos by touching the sensor, which is especially convenient when taking selfies. But flipping through photos in the gallery, as, for example, on the Mate S, is impossible. The scanner is still primarily a convenient way to protect a smartphone, its other uses are secondary.

Software

We have already written about Android 6.0 in detail in the review of the first smartphone with a clean version of this OS -
