Historically, many of us are more accustomed to this type of optical instrument such as binoculars. This is understandable: we have two eyes, and because of this, the purpose of the monocular seems not entirely clear. Meanwhile, this device is in some ways even more convenient and useful than binoculars. Let's start with the fact that it has one purpose - surveillance of an object. Moreover, this is not an HD TV for you to watch; here the brightness and richness of the picture do not play a big role. The advantage of binoculars over a monocular is only in the width of the viewing angles, which in a monocular is partially compensated by turning the head. On the other hand, the second one also has its strong advantages over binoculars.

The main advantage, which is also the most obvious, is the price. For the cost of one binocular, you can purchase two, but different monoculars, designed to solve different types of problems. Then they can be combined as needed. The second advantage is its compactness, lightness and reliability. Everything here is obvious and understandable: less weight is less of a burden on the pocket, falls are not so critical for the device, etc. Observation from a monocular can be done more secretly, since a person in the city center with binoculars in his hands clearly attracts more attention. There are also less obvious advantages. When shooting, we aim with one eye, and in cases where the weapon is not equipped with an optical sight, a monocular allows us to quickly correct our actions when shooting. It also allows you to track the movement of an object, estimating the distance to it alternately with the armed and naked eyes. In all other respects, both devices are very similar, and the parameters with high-quality characteristics will be suitable for both binoculars and monoculars. Unless (for obvious reasons) the interpupillary distance parameter will not be relevant for a monocular.

Let's briefly consider the main performance characteristics that a person buying a monocular needs to know.

• Multiplicity: a characteristic indicating the degree of approximation of an object. In the model description, the multiplicity is indicated as the first digit before the “x” sign. To better understand, let's explain using the example of a monocular with tenfold magnification (10x). When an object is one hundred meters away, you will see it as if it were ten meters away from you. For devices with variable focus, the numbers will be indicated with a hyphen.
• Lens diameter (in millimeters): This is the second number after the “x”. The larger the lens, the wider the field of view will be.

In fact, choosing a monocular is not difficult; it is much more difficult to decide why you need it, so below we will describe the best devices in their class for each type of task.

This model is a prime example of a simple “civilian” monocular. Low price, light weight and high-quality optics made this device popular. It has been noticed many times in people at the bus stop, in spectators at sporting events, and a little less frequently in theaters. There is nothing special about this monocular; its main advantages include coated optics and a waterproof body. The monocular has a slightly higher class than the previous one, and is much more suitable for active pastime. The notorious talk about using a monocular during hunting would be appropriate here. Firstly, the axis of the external lens and the eyepiece are separated, and this was done for a reason. The fact is that when we use two eyes, we easily determine the center of the visible picture, but as soon as we close one eye, the concept of the center shifts and we get lost in space. A monocular with a staggered axis allows you to orient the lens as if between the eyes (like the mythical Cyclops), thereby the picture viewed even with one eye will be correctly centered.

If you need a more understandable explanation of why someone needs this, let's resort to a practical example. In the process of hunting waterfowl, a situation arises when a duck shot, for example, flies like a stone into the reeds. This is one of the few options where metal is used as the body material rather than plastic. Is it good or bad - you can’t answer right away, it’s probably different for everyone. We will not explain the purpose of this device once again - everything is clear from the name. But we’ll probably tell you how well everything was implemented. Let us recall that the Yukon company in the world of optical instruments can be compared with the BMW company in the automotive world. There are Mercedes and Bentleys here, but the Yukon is the Yukon. Everything about it is traditionally done at the highest level: a rubberized body with a soft coating, well-thought-out mounts for a tripod or a helmet.

Night vision is based on infrared illumination and operates at a distance of up to 150 meters. But the most remarkable thing is that you can purchase special photo adapters for this monocular, after which the device also becomes a camera lens. The ability to use a monocular with a camera takes the former to a whole new level; the same prospects for night photography and video can be difficult to overestimate. When we talk about tourists, to be honest, we don’t always imagine what type they are and how, for example, a tourist differs from a hunting one. But there is still a difference. The hunter is designed to be treated unpretentiously, with a high probability that it can be dropped, drowned, dirty, and so on. Hunters are usually strong men, for whom extra weight of half a kilogram will not play a big role. A tourist is a bird of a different feather. For a tourist, the struggle for the weight of luggage can be carried out by grams; universal things are valued. Tourists themselves behave more calmly than hunters and are often inclined to observe and take notes. It is for these that tourist optical instruments are produced.

In optical terms, the Minox MD 6x16 A is no different; it has decent parameters, quite typical for devices of this class. The advantages of the device are different. A completely “hardcore” option that reminds us that the creation of modern monoculars is primarily a military initiative. When producing this model, the task was to create not so much a lightweight version of binoculars, but rather a device suitable for sights, sighting modules, lighting and photographic devices. In tactical maneuvers, entire complexes, the so-called “day-night”, have become especially popular. They are monoculars with the ability to instantly attach to another device or even folding ones. The requirements for military or, let's say, weapons-type devices are very high.

The described monocular belongs to such uncompromising systems. It is also a night vision device with a good range of infrared illumination and, moreover, with the ability to connect another infrared module to enhance the effect. We are not even talking about the case, since all the moisture-, dust- and dirt-proof properties are embodied here. The optics themselves are made at the highest level; this is a “long-range weapon” with an observation distance of 500 meters. In general, not everyone will be able to appreciate this device; only a telescope will be cooler.

After describing most monoculars, one gets the feeling that binoculars are a completely unnecessary thing. Proper use of one or two monoculars will solve observation problems no worse, or even better than binoculars, while devices of the first category have a lower cost and more durable compact bodies.

The industry can provide a choice of monoculars for almost all tasks, but the main selection criterion has been and will be the quality of the optics. This is the alpha and omega of any optical device. High-quality optics can be recognized by the characteristic multi-colored tints and the feeling of depth and multi-layeredness of the lens, and even physically, a high-quality lens is heavy by weight. Housings containing such a lens can be made of different materials, but they must be absolutely free of backlash, cracks, traces of glue and even scratches. And the most dangerous risk factor for any optical device is overheating.
