We don’t know how objectively it can be compared, but earlier the sound was better on the Walkman, but it looks like now the sound will be better on the iPod 5. When listening to music through them, it seems that the sound comes from the speakers, and not from the headphones.

The packaging for the headphones differs from that of the set of the "five": unlike the nice plastic "case", here we are dealing with recycled materials, loudly rustling from any touch. On the reverse side, the whole thing is covered with a piece of cardboard, which must be ripped off in order to get the EarPods free. The very first impression fits into one capacious obscene word. The new iPod Touch isn't just super light and thin. Its weight is not felt at all in the hand, excluding the tactile sensations from the metal, and the depth of the case is so insignificant that at first you feel some suspicious discomfort. I guarantee that if the ribs were sharp, the new "touch" could cut not only food, but also wood. But now the shape of the back panel exactly matches the lid of regular MacBook Pros: straight at the top and sharply rounded at the bottom. I can't say that it all lies in my hand betterthan the last generation. But there is no need to sob here either.

The front panel is real undera panel in a characteristic recess hides a violet-blue peephole of the front camera. The Home button, whose disappearance we are promised almost every year, stands in its usual place. It is pressed extremely tightly and rather loudly - because of the miniature depth, explained by the harsh necessity.

The glass is still slightly raised relative to the rest of the case. At the same time, the color of the rear panel is visible even from the front - thanks to the protruding metal "ribs". They are sharpened to a near shine at a 45 degree angle, which creates a nice highlight. The edge seems verysharp to the touch, but I couldn't scratch my hands with it. Yes, I tried it.

At the top, there is a screen lock button, which is now installed perpendicular to the body, and not at an angle “somewhere behind”. The right side of the player is completely empty, while on the left there are two separate volume control keys - this time at a very slight angle. All these elements are made not of plastic, as in the touch 4, but of metal, and the same color as the entire back panel case.

At the bottom there is a headphone jack, a Lightning connector port and five round holes that release sound from a miniature speaker in the case. The 3.5mm jack and speaker are reversed this year. This did not affect the usability at all. The speaker holes are closed with a very dense mesh, and he himself, running ahead, does not shine at all with either volume or sound quality, but it will fit as a background tweeter for sounding toys. There is nothing to say about the synchronization port: put in the cord and go.

Okay, why pull, it's time to turn over. If everything is completely according to Feng Shui with the front, then something indescribable is happening behind. This is the most dramatic rear panel redesign in iPod Touch history - and perhaps the most controversial.

Be careful with your desires. Because one day they can be exactly fulfilled, and the result can be very different from what was expected. For many, many years, the owners of iPods have been crying to Apple: why are you putting in polished steel if you know you can scratch it with one sidelong glance? In Cupertino, they sat and obviously twisted their fingers at their temples - the tactile sensations from the metal processed in this way are simply delightful, and for their sake the flock could tolerate the fragile nature of the body. As a result, the consumer won: now all the "cars" are closed behind with a panel made of mattaluminum, reflecting only the silhouettes.

Scratch the back panel now noticeablyheavier. In very bright light, it can be seen that the material seems to be "chipped" vertically. It is curious how the color of the panel changes depending on the lighting: it fades sharply, and "sharp" shades disappear from it. The Apple logo and the name of the device are in the same color as the body, but they clearly stand out: both protrude above the surface by a hundredth of a millimeter and have an almost "mirrored", exceptionally smooth surface, and to the touch is very similar to the panel of the previous generation of the touch player. The text at the bottom is in black paint, but it is practically invisible in the light at an angle.

The camera peephole has not only become visually larger. Now it naturally protrudes a good millimeter above the surface of the case. The decision is not the best, but it is clearly a forced one, if we take into account the dimensions of the player. The metal rim around the camera module is framed by the thinnest circles, which, even if you hurt yourself, cannot be seen with the naked eye. Two-thirds of the eye area is occupied by an opaque black film, and the remaining space is divided between the gray surface of the module and a very small lens in shades of blue.

A microphone is hidden in its own recess next to the camera, covered with a diamond-shaped mesh. And a little to the right is a new element for "touch" - a flash. There is only one diode in it, but it shines quite well for itself. In addition to flashlight functionality and something else incredibly useful (we'll talk about that a bit later), flash makes night shots digestible. Who would have thought. True, its power will only be enough for one or two meters.

More to the right, closer to the corner, there is a voluminous "hole" made of matte plastic. The Wi-Fi module is hidden under it. Apple nevertheless returned to the idea of \u200b\u200ba separate window in the case for wireless communication modules (see), and the consequences of this decision can be safely divided into good and bad. The black blot looks sad, but the level and speed of signal reception have almost doubled! For the sake of this, you can be patient, especially after the infamous Wi-Fi module in iPad 3:

A design description would be incomplete without mentioning the large aluminum button in the lower left corner. This is a Loop mount. It works very simply: pressed once - the button went out, pressed two - the button snapped into the body. True, the latter action requires some effort. And since we started talking about Loop, it makes sense to consider the accessory itself.

No matter how capacious and mysterious its name is, Loop is stupid strap... The strap material is very similar to neoprene, one side of which is smooth and bright, while the other is rather fleecy and pale. On the inside, a sacred phrase is printed, the content of which is known by heart to any user of Apple technology. It is said to make any item 90% cooler and 50% more expensive. But it is not for us fanatics to judge ...

The strap is equipped with a small ring made of a similar material, which very well - at least for now - fixes the entire structure on the arm, preventing it from falling during a sharp vertical movement. All this joy is attached to the button using the simplest double hole: thread the strap on one side, pull on the other - and you're done.

To be honest: until now I considered Loop to be another Smart Cover: an idea of \u200b\u200bingenious simplicity, absolutely unadaptedto the harsh everyday life of using the gadget. The reality really surprised me. Loop not only grips the iPod touch perfectly in your hand, even if you are running, sitting, spinning the player in the air like a helicopter, and so on. He is able to withstand such tricks and tricks that the hearts of people standing next to him will burst with fear for the device. I'm afraid that one day Loop will fall apart from such extreme miracles. But so far so good. Just make sure that the hanging player does not touch anything solid.

The bottom line is that the impressions of the new case remain twofold. On the one hand, matte metal is a definite plus in any case. But because of it, tactile sensations suffer: now the "touch" seems almost plastic, and bright colors only contribute to this. Cold polished steel gives the best experience. There can be no doubt about this: iPod touch 4 sits better in your hand than iPod touch 5 and is much more pleasant. Another thing is that in a month one of them will look like a victim of a metal machine tool. And it will definitely not be a new generation. Well, we asked for it ourselves.

Screen: 10 out of 10

Fun fact: a year ago, we laughed at Android owners and argued that enlarging the display is bad. Today we have an iPod Touch with a larger display in our hands - and we are happy. Why are we happy?

Because Apple didn't lie. The screen is absolutely accurate, to the smallest details and trifles repeats that of the iPhone 5. What does this mean? First of all, colors... Lively, bright, accurate, enjoyable - a huge difference from the blueness of all previous Touch players. Black turned black instead of pale gray. White turned white - although no, quite a bit yellowish, which is still much better than snow blue. It is believed that the iPhone 5 has the most accurate color display of all smartphones. That title deservedly extends to the iPod touch 5. A treat for the eyes.

Secondly, IPS. Screen colors are no longer inverted at any viewing angle. That is, all the strangers and strangers sitting next to you will be able to enjoy your film or game in all colors. However, at the same corners, the display still loses its brightness - and veryessential, which makes it difficult to use the device in such positions. But this is, rather, a plus - for the above reason.

Thirdly, oleophobic coating... It has become much easier to clean the display from traces of use. And the additional sliding of the fingers from this layer did not bother anyone yet. Finally, plus and minus at the same time: display size. The increased resolution and diagonal correspond to those of the iPhone 5: 4 inches diagonally with a matrix resolution of 1136 by 640 pixels. More information is always good. But at what cost? The width, as you know, has remained the same, which should simplify the use of devices for people with a small hand grip area.

After several days of intensive testing, I noticed that in my (very small) hands, the top or bottom 10-15% of the screen is still inaccessible for quick one-handed use without the need to "intercept". However, the second hand is still not required. Considering that the vast majority of readers will have larger hands, you shouldn't have any problems.

In an amicable way, the display of iPod touch 5 is the second reason that can force all owners of previous generations of this device to immediately "update". With the first reason, everything is much simpler and more prosaic.

Two months ago, the author bought an iPod touch 4 at a local flea market. For fun. A day later I sold it back, crossing myself. This thing, even being rebuilt from scratch in iTunes, worked very badly on iOS 5. And when I took the risk of installing the beta version of iOS 6, it just died. Anyone need a player in which he playerunable to play music without brakes in the menu? The iron of the fourth "wheelbarrow" is not just outdated - in an amicable way it should have been deprived of support for the latest version of iOS, because it did not pull it at all. The device urgently needed a successor. Powerful.

For the first time in the past two years, I was able to calmly dig into my iTunes home library without the risk of catching a "crash" of the player, and the browser did not throw me at the desktop even when opening a wagon of tabs on a very gluttonous full version of the portal The Verge.

It is customary not to believe words, so here are the results of synthetic tests. In Geekbench, the device scores twice as many points as its predecessor; in Sunspider (browser test) we have an almost fivefold advantage. If you believe the results on the website of the graphics package GLBenchmark, the video performance of the player is less than that in comparison with the 4S by about 4-5 percent. Photos from the new player are clear, good, but their quality still drops sharply in low light conditions. The detail of the photos themselves and the color rendition are similar to those of the iPad 3, which is not surprising. And if we add Loop here, we get a player with a travel "soap dish" function. A very viable use case for the device. Sorry, but the front camera is still sad.

The flash, by the way, is useful not so much for photos as for ... notifications. In the iOS settings "LED flash". It activates the flash every time there is an incoming call, iMessage, email, or just a push notification. An extremely convenient feature with an inverted screen, which completely replaces the missing vibration motor. This seemingly triflepleased almost more than the new screen.

iPod nnada?

So, iPod touch 5 is an iPhone 5 without a “dialer”. Software and functionality, the new touch player is very similar to the equally new Apple smartphone. But at the same time, having excluded Loop from the list, touch is in no way able to improve the life of the owner of the "five". Therefore, let's figure out if this device is right for you.

It is pressed extremely tightly and rather loudly - because of the miniature depth, explained by the harsh necessity. The glass is still slightly raised relative to the rest of the case. In this case, the color of the rear panel is visible even from the front - thanks to the protruding metal "ribs". They are sharpened to a near shine at a 45 degree angle, which creates a nice highlight. The edge seems verysharp to the touch, but I could not scratch my hands with it. Yes, I tried it. At the top, there is a screen lock button, which is now installed perpendicular to the body, and not at an angle “somewhere behind”. The right side of the player is completely empty, while on the left there are two separate volume control keys - this time at a very slight angle. All these elements are made not of plastic, as in the touch 4, but of metal, and the same color as the entire back panel case. At the bottom there is a headphone jack, a Lightning connector port and five round holes that release sound from a miniature speaker in the case. The 3.5mm jack and speaker have swapped places this year. This did not affect the usability at all. The speaker openings are closed with a very dense mesh, and he himself, running ahead, does not shine at all with either volume or sound quality, but it will fit as a background tweeter for sounding toys. There is nothing to say about the synchronization port: put in the cord and go. Okay, why pull, it's time to turn over. If everything is completely according to Feng Shui with the front, then something indescribable is happening behind. Two-thirds of the eye area is occupied by an opaque black film, and the remaining space is divided between the gray surface of the module and a very small lens in shades of blue. Near the camera, a microphone is hidden in its own recess, covered with a diamond-shaped mesh. And a little to the right is a new element for "touch" - a flash. There is only one diode in it, but it shines quite well for itself. In addition to flashlight functionality and something incredibly useful (we'll talk about that a little later), flash makes night shots digestible. Who would have thought. True, its power will only be enough for one or two meters. More to the right, closer to the corner, there is a voluminous "hole" made of matte plastic. The Wi-Fi module is hidden under it. Apple nevertheless returned to the idea of \u200b\u200ba separate window in the case for wireless communication modules (see), and the consequences of this decision can be safely divided into good and bad. The black blot looks sad, but the level and speed of signal reception has almost doubled! You can tolerate this for this, especially after the infamous Wi-Fi module in iPad 3: The design description would be incomplete without mentioning the large aluminum button in the lower left corner. This is a Loop mount. It works very simply: pressed once - the button went out, pressed two - the button snapped into the body. True, the latter action requires some effort. And since we started talking about Loop, it makes sense to consider the accessory itself. No matter how capacious and mysterious its name is, Loop is stupid strap... The strap material is very similar to neoprene, one side of which is smooth and bright, while the other is rather fleecy and pale. On the inside, a sacred phrase is printed, the content of which is known by heart to any user of Apple technology. It is said to make any item 90% cooler and 50% more expensive. But it is not for us, fanatics, to judge ... A small ring made of a similar material is put on the strap, which very well - at least for now - fixes the entire structure on the hand, preventing it from falling during a sharp vertical movement. All this joy is attached to the button using the simplest double hole: we pass the strap on one side, pull on the other - and you're done. To be honest: until now I considered Loop to be another Smart Cover: an idea of \u200b\u200bingenious simplicity, absolutely unadaptedto the harsh everyday life of using the gadget. The reality really surprised me. Loop not only grips the iPod touch perfectly in your hand, even if you are running, sitting, spinning the player in the air like a helicopter, and so on. He is able to withstand such tricks and tricks that the hearts of people standing next to him will burst with fear for the device. I'm afraid that one day Loop will still fall apart from such extreme miracles. But so far so good. Just make sure that the hanging player does not touch anything solid. The bottom line is that the impressions of the new case remain twofold. On the one hand, matte metal is a definite plus in any case. But because of it, tactile sensations suffer: now the "touch" seems almost plastic, and bright colors only contribute to this. Cold polished steel gives the best experience. There can be no doubt about this: the iPod touch 4 sits better in your hand than the iPod touch 5 and is much more pleasant. Fun fact: A year ago, we laughed at Android owners and argued that enlarging the display is bad. Today we have an iPod Touch with a larger display in our hands - and we are happy. Why are we happy? Because Apple didn't lie. The screen is absolutely accurate, to the smallest details and trifles repeats that of the iPhone 5. What does this mean? First of all, colors... Lively, vibrant, accurate, enjoyable - a huge difference from the blueness of all previous Touch players. Black turned black instead of pale gray. White turned white - although no, quite a bit yellowish, which is still much better than snow blue. It is believed that the iPhone 5 has the most accurate color display of all smartphones. That title deservedly extends to the iPod touch 5. A treat for the eyes. Secondly, IPS. Screen colors are no longer inverted at any viewing angles. That is, all the strangers and strangers sitting next to you will be able to enjoy your film or game in all colors. However, at the same corners, the display still loses its brightness - and veryessential, which makes it difficult to use the device in such positions. However, the second hand is still not required. Considering that the vast majority of readers will have larger hands, you shouldn't have any problems. In an amicable way, the display of iPod touch 5 is the second reason that can force all owners of previous generations of this device to immediately "update". With the first reason, everything is much simpler and more prosaic.

Two months ago, the author bought an iPod touch 4 at a local flea market. For fun. A day later, I sold it back, crossing myself. This thing, even being rebuilt from scratch in iTunes, worked very badly on iOS 5. And when I took the risk of putting the beta version of iOS 6 - it just died. The iron of the fourth "wheelbarrow" is not just outdated - in an amicable way it generally had to be deprived of support for the latest version of iOS, because it did not pull it at all. And "esca", as you know, is still taxis... Add here a fast memory of 512 MB versus 256 - and we get an obvious advantage over the previous generation of touch players. So obvious that it can be safely called double, and in some places even threefold thanks to the new memory. iOS 6 flies in all scenarios. Absolutely. For two days of testing games, browser, music, video, and so on, I did not notice any obvious "brakes". At the same time, the enlarged screen definitely consumes more processor "juices" than that of the iPhone 4S. For the first time in the last two years, I was able to calmly dig into my iTunes home library without the risk of catching a "crash" of the player, and the browser did not throw me at the desktop even when opening a wagon of tabs on a very gluttonous full version of the portal The Verge.
It is customary not to believe words, so here are the results of synthetic tests. In Geekbench, the device scores twice as many points as its predecessor; in Sunspider (browser test) we have an almost fivefold advantage. The speaker at the bottom isn't very loud or as loud as the iPhone 5, but it can be enough if you consider listening to music while lounging in the bathroom.

There is nothing tube here. The sound of the iPod Touch resembles that of the iPhone 5, and the sound of the iPhone 5 is the standard of all smartphones. If you use ALAC, play with the equalizer, then you can achieve excellent results - for a universal gadget, called a player only for marketing reasons. The volume level is very high, the bass is good, there are no substrates, everything is clean and neat, pleasant to listen to. However, in normal stores, you can try the Touch yourself with your headphones - if you replace the EarPods with something bigger, like the Aiaiai TMA-1, then the sound is by no means disappointing in this case. On the contrary, it is surprising. Earlier I said that everything is fine in Apple devices, but the sound is better in Walkman, now I won't say that. Rather, the opposite is true.

A wonderful feature with a button and straps, I think it will be especially appreciated in Tokyo (and in Japan in general). A good camera for a player, these shots can be safely saved on a computer. It's a pity that the iPhone 4S camera was not installed here. But this does not disappoint me personally. There is no room in my pocket for an iPod Touch. There is an iPhone 5 for such tasks. But I can safely recommend this device to you, Apple dodged, but made a real candy out of the player - and, after all, it’s harder and harder to call a gadget a player. One word, Touch.

P.S. It is gratifying that Classic has not gone anywhere from the iPod line. And no memory was added, and the design was not changed. It's time already, it's high time. Under the frame, there is a compartment with a package, namely: new Apple Earpods, an updated leather strap, an updated USB cable, and documentation. As you can see, there are many innovations even here.

I've never been a fan of Apple packaging, the current iPod Touch 5 has a very simple packaging like most of the cheaper players. But it should be noted that although the packaging is simple, it is made of very high quality.

IPod Touch 5 build quality

The first thing that comes to mind when you pick up the new iPod Touch 5 is finally there is no glossy lid here. The back cover of the new iPod Touch is made in the same way as in previous versions of aluminum, but now it is covered with paint (there are many different colors). The gloss on the lid remained only in the company logo.

The screen is covered with glass, which collects scratches much less than its plastic counterparts. It is a pity that the glass is not gorilla glass. The menu button is located under the screen. Above the screen is a front-facing camera with a resolution of 1.2 megapixels.

On the back is a 5-megapixel camera with LED backlighting, a volume rocker on the right side, a speaker on the bottom, and a power button on top.

Also on the back is one of the player's innovations, it is a button in the lower left corner of the player. At first glance, it is not even immediately clear, but why is it actually needed? The answer lies in the new wrist strap. By pressing this button, it rises and the same wrist belt is put on it. The decision is very controversial, the fact is that this belt (leather and very high quality) is not very tightly fixed, and as it seemed to the author, the belt may fly off (which is already very dangerous for the device). Also, the dimensions of the player cover are increasing, which will lead to the impossibility of using many cases. For the author, this technical solution is absolutely incomprehensible.

The manufacturing quality of the player is at the highest level. There are not even the slightest gaps or creaks, and the player finally has a matte lid. But why it was necessary to change the wrist strap mount remains a mystery.

Apple Earpods in iPod Touch 5
The author of this review rarely talks about complete headphones. But this time I decided to make an exception, the whole point is that these headphones have a very not bad sound. Perhaps this is due to their design features. The headphones seem to play in two directions and thus create an interesting effect of presence. The stage is wide and pleasant. And the sound itself is not bad at all and is moderately detailed. Perhaps there is not enough low frequencies, and the middle could be less emphasized.

The headphones are not very comfortable, the fit is not deep due to the curved shape. The headphones rest against the sink and thus cause severe discomfort.

The headphones have an extremely low level of sound insulation (since they do not have silicone eartips), which makes them not very suitable for wearing outdoors.

The workmanship is typical for complete headphones, that is, a lot of plastic, thin wires, flimsy straight jack.

But nevertheless, the headphones surprised with their sound, and perhaps they can be called the best complete headphones that the author has ever heard.

IPod Touch 5 camera

The player is equipped with a 5 megapixel camera with an autofocus module as the main camera (with LED flash) and an additional 1.2 megapixel camera on the front of the device without autofocus.

Sufficiently fast autofocus, powerful and bright flash (for LED naturally). But the pictures are not very detailed, there is a high level of noise in pictures, autofocus is often mistaken, frames are often blurred. In a word - a typical camera of any mobile device is suitable for capturing text, but you should not expect more.

The front camera is only suitable for Skype communications (in general, it is intended for it).
Although for an undemanding user, the camera performs all the basic tasks, the author believes that if the camera did not exist, it would not be worse for anyone, because there is little benefit from it.

ITunes and iPod Touch 5

A headache for all Apple technology lovers, this rather inconvenient program is the only way to transfer music to the player, and besides, the program refuses to transfer music in FLAC or APE formats, only after converting them to ALAC or MP3. Among other things, this program often performs a bunch of unnecessary actions with the player (even if you are against it - like a backup).

ITunes is one of the main problems and not the convenience of this player.

There are very few buttons on the player, which negatively affects its usability. The thing is that in this case it becomes very difficult to control the player blindly. The player operates under the operating system IOS 6, its structure 1 in 1 repeats all previous versions of the iPod Touch 5 and iPhone, so we will not dwell on this point in detail.

Whether you like the system or not is a matter of personal preference. The system works quickly, rather even lightning fast. The sensor is very sensitive, 10-finger capacitive.

The player is implemented in the traditional iPod style, a very convenient library will help you quickly find the desired song. It's only a shame that there is no folder navigation.

Like Iphone, iPod Touch 5 has the ability to install a huge number of applications from the brand store. Because of this, you can install a huge number of games and applications on the player that expand the capabilities of the player, both free and paid (of which the majority)

Of the minuses, it is worth noting the small number of supported audio formats, ALAC, MP3, WAV. FLAC or APE player does not support.
The player has Wi-Fi, it turned out to be connected to its access point without any problems, and in a minute to go online through the built-in Safari browser.

Bluetooth - the functionality is extremely limited, namely, it allows you to use wireless headsets, or output music to wireless speakers.

The loud Sony did not play badly with the iPod, the number of low frequencies is normal, the middle is a little highlighted, and the high frequencies are sibilant and whistling.

The player was unable to swing these headphones, the sound is very dim. There are no low frequencies, no middle ones, and there is nothing to say about high frequencies. These headphones are not for such a player. But in fairness, Cowon C2 is not able to open these headphones
