Honor 7x review and reviews. Price and main characteristics

The Honor 7X is not a flagship phone from Huawei, but it has all the new flagship features. the narrow bezels and dual lens can all be found in the Honor 7X.

It is much more affordable than a headliner from Samsung or Google, but the gap is not big. It seems even too narrow, disproportionate to the price that separates the Honor 7X and the Galaxy S8. Without further ado, we present you with a detailed review, in which we will talk about its features, advantages and disadvantages, and determine, based on the test results, for whom this smartphone from the Chinese company is suitable.

The package includes a minimum set of accessories:

  • USB cable;
  • charging block;
  • apparatus;
  • instruction;
  • paper clip to remove the tray.

I would like to add a cover, but you shouldn't wait for something else for such a price, because competitors also do not indulge in a complete set.

Design

Let's start our review of the Honor 7X with a look. The device looks great from the outside. Its main advantage in terms of aesthetics is its widescreen display, which occupies 82.9% of the front panel. The figure is not as impressive as in the S8 or iPhone X. This display-to-front ratio still puts the 7X higher than the Pixel 2XL, which has a matrix of only 76.4%.

The screen is angular, with sharp edges, it is a little discordant against the background of the rounded body, but this does not spoil the appearance. There are no physical buttons under the display, instead the manufacturer's logo. Navigation is performed using on-screen buttons. The upper platform above the matrix was "occupied" by the front camera and the acoustic speaker.

The device is metallic, it can be made in black, blue, red and gold. The design feels reliable and premium. The lid does not collect fingerprints, and the rounded edges of the bumper make the phone comfortable to use with one hand, despite its size.

On the back, on the left, there are two camera sensors that stick out a little, and a flash to the left. A plastic strip for antenna output passes through the modules. Below, in the middle, is a round fingerprint scanner. It works quickly and is easy to find. Works almost 100% of the time, even if your hands are slightly dirty or damp.

On the left side there is a hybrid tray for SIM cards and a flash drive, on the opposite side there are physical power and volume buttons. Bottom - MicroUSB port, speaker and headphone jack.

Huawei Honor 7X keeps up with the design trends of the end of 2017. It is not waterproof, but stylish, widescreen, looks expensive and is made in bright colors, so this solution will be interesting for a young audience.

Screen

Speaking of the screen, it is a 5.93-inch LCD with FHD + resolution and 18: 9 aspect ratio. The characteristics of the matrix are inferior to the flagship ones, however, if you do not compare the Honor 7X with the Note 8, then you will not notice the difference.

The brightness range in the Honor 7X smartphone is sufficient to comfortably read at night and not peer into text in the daytime sun. The viewing angles are good, there is no noticeable color inversion. The IPS matrix has a high contrast ratio of 2.109: 1, which is why it is so bright. With a maximum brightness of 499 cd / m 2, 7X text is easy to read in most conditions. You may want to shade the screen slightly with your hand in the highest light conditions, facing the sun. For the money, this matrix is \u200b\u200bvery decent.

Sound and communication

At the bottom of the device there is one speaker, which is easy to accidentally close with your finger while playing. It is loud enough, it is difficult to miss the call. You will be able to watch YouTube while cooking in the kitchen. The headphones sound good, lovers of high-quality music will not be disappointed. High and middle frequencies are played out clearly, the bass does not sag.

The call quality is excellent, none of the interlocutors complains about the sound during a call. Network stability is also excellent, even in places with poor coverage, the phone does not lose its connection. All communication bands in Russia and Ukraine are supported.

operating system

The Honor 7X smartphone runs Android 7.0 Nougat with EMUI 5.1 shell. We have written about it many times, but now we will note the innovations characteristic of the latest updates, for example, "Huawei Ultra Memory". According to the manufacturer's description, this machine learning technology is designed to memorize scenarios that the user performs on a smartphone and make them fast and comfortable.

You will often be amazed that you will not noticeably switch back to applications launched a few days ago. This is partly due to the amount of RAM and pleases that the shell is configured for multitasking, so you will not wait for unnecessary loading of programs and interface. The new "Ultra Response" feature provides smoother scrolling across all programs and systems.

The shell is good, works flawlessly. The firmware incorporates innovations from Android 7, for example, "Split Screen" (split screen). The user's manual will tell about many features and chips of the system.

Camera

The Honor 7X has dual cameras on the back. Main module - 16 MP, f / 2.2 aperture. Next to it is an additional 2 megapixel sensor. The purpose of the second lens is to take a distance reading to take pictures in bokeh mode. The depth effect produces beautiful photos that look like they were taken with a more expensive DSLR camera.

The cameras have a Pro mode for photos and videos, in which you can set the ISO value, shutter speed and white balance, etc. There is an option for tracking car lights or the movement of stars. And the developers have provided a huge set of filters and other settings for getting pretty shots. It will be interesting for girls and enthusiasts who enjoy creating highly retouched pictures. Many of these same things can be done through third-party applications, but it's nice to have options built in out of the box.

Low light photos leave a lot to be desired and autofocusing in the evening can be tricky. Therefore, the automatic mode is best used in good shooting conditions. To improve photo quality at night, we recommend manual settings. The rest of the pictures are pretty good, the white balance, saturation and details in the pictures are correct. The Honor 7X camera is a worthy competitor to Xiaomi and Meizu products, which is confirmed by examples of photos. To expand the dynamic range, use HDR, which cleverly stitches the photos here - they are clearer, dark areas are lightened, and highlights are darkened to avoid intersecting shades and black spots.

The video is recorded in FHD, there is no optical stabilization, but there is a weak electronic one. The detailing of the videos is not bad, even better than that of the Redmi 5+. With sufficient lighting the result is not bad, the focusing speed is average. As soon as you start video recording in the evening or in a room with little light, you will get a noisy video, but all competitors are guilty of this.

Interestingly, the front-facing 8 MP camera with a self-learning function can also take "portrait" photos, despite the presence of only one lens. This is achieved thanks to software processing, which is impressive: in ideal conditions, there is no noticeable difference between the effects created by the main camera and the front camera.

However, applying "fake" bokeh on the front camera means that the background becomes blurred as a result of the subject being in focus. This is a nice effect when the algorithms work correctly, but the new 7X doesn't always accurately define the boundaries of the subject, which causes it to blur the wrong elements. The software is constantly learning and updating, perhaps it will learn to better cope with this.

The camera is one of the areas that give out in smartphones belonging to the mid-budget segment, while it demonstrates steep performance for its price and does not lose to competitors.

Performance

The Huawei Honor 7X Dual Sim mobile phone is equipped with an eight-core SOC Kirin 659 (the same chip in Huawei Nova 2I) with four "powerful" Cortex-A53 cores at a frequency of 2.36 GHz and four energy efficient ones at 1.7 GHz each. GPU - ARM Mali T830. The system on a chip is symmetric, since the cores are of the same architecture. She has an easier time picking up the load and is good at multitasking. In single-threaded mode, the SOC is weak.

HiSilicon solutions are enough for everyday tasks. Its technical characteristics make it easy to "turn around" simple processes, system tasks, to cope with the prompt launch of applications. It performs well in light games, but copes with heavy games at 50-60 FPS only at the minimum graphics settings. The same Snapdragon 625 reveals better in 3D. However, if you do not plan to play, you only need smoothness and it does not matter that the processor does any task in a second, then the Kirin 659 will do. But its performance margin is small, since processors based on the new Cortex-A55 and A75 cores are about to go on sale.

When working with 3D applications or Antutu, the phone becomes very warm, but not hot. In benchmarks, the indicators are standard for this price segment. Huawei Honor 7X in Antutu is gaining about 90,000 points, and in Geekbench Benchmark - Single-Core 900, and Multi-Core 3500.

There are versions with 4/32 GB, 4/64 GB and 4/128 GB. Those for whom this is not enough can install microSD memory cards up to 256 GB.

Battery

The battery capacity is 3340 mAh, which is not very much, but in this case the optimization decides. We are glad to announce that the Honor 7X is perfectly balanced, working all day long even under heavy loads. If you correspond, watch YouTube, use Google Maps for navigation, take calls and take pictures, then at the end of the day you will see about 5-6 hours of screen activity in the battery statistics. One hour of playing tanks drains the battery by about 20%, which is very decent for an almost 6-inch phone with such a "thin" battery.

The phone has a MicroUSB port and there is no fast charging. You get about 54% charge per hour, which is not bad either.

The cost

The start of sales in Russia has already taken place. At the time of writing the review, the price for a smartphone is as follows:

  • 32 GB - $ 205;
  • 64 GB - $ 250;
  • 128 GB - $ 280.

The presentation of the Huawei Honor 7X took place a long time ago and the smartphone has fallen in price since the release date, so later it will be able to "grab" dollars 15-20 lower.

Outcome

It's time to sum up the Huawei Honor 7X review, note the positive and negative sides.

  • widescreen, almost frameless screen;
  • dual camera;
  • value for money;
  • a lot of RAM and competent work with it;
  • design;
  • firmware.
  • lack of NFC for Android Pay and Huawei Pay;
  • gaming performance;
  • microUSB socket.

Naturally, the Honor 7X is not a perfect phone, but it has earned close attention in its price segment since its release. It doesn't have the most reliable camera when it comes to low-light photography, but other $ 200 cameras from Meizu, Xiaomi and Nubia suffer from this too. The only moment that can push you away from the purchase is the speed of work in games, since the characteristics of the Huawei 7X do not allow it to deliver a high frame rate even at medium settings, which was confirmed by the Antutu test. But this is the only serious drawback, because, as the Huawei Honor 7X review showed, everything else is not so critical, and the cool design, good sound in the headphones and balanced parameters outweigh all the disadvantages.

Honor has repeatedly introduced interesting features on its mid-range smartphones that we would normally expect to see on more expensive devices. Honor 7X, which has an 18: 9 display like Huawei and very thin bezels. We spent some time with the Honor 7X and here's what we think.

Honor 7X release date and price

As of December 5, the new smartphones of the Chinese company have completed their journey to the west, and the Honor 7X, being a newer device aimed at a younger audience on a budget, offers quite a lot of possibilities for its functions. The US price is $ 199.99 in black and blue.

The Honor 7X is priced at £ 269 in the UK and currently comes with the Honor Band 3 fitness tracker.

Honor 7X design and build quality

The design of the Honor 7X is similar to that of other Honor smartphones like Huawei and Chinese devices from other brands. This technology has been integrated into a 7.6mm metal body with a slightly protruding dual camera, a fingerprint reader and two antenna strips.

Just a few years ago, it was rare to find a mid-range smartphone with an aluminum body, but now it is starting to get boring. This shows how the demand in the market changes.

Honor 7X display occupies 83% of the screen. Honor has not integrated a USB type C port, you can use microUSB with all the disadvantages that come with it. The Honor 7X weighs 165 grams and is 7.6mm thick. The device is available in black and blue.

Honor Display 7X

An 18: 9 screen has a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels, which is the standard for this format. Customers are now expecting a FullHD display in the mid-range. But Honor does offer specifications that are more than in line with the competition.

The pixel density for a 5.93-inch screen is 407 dpi. Having an IPS panel is nice, especially if you prefer more natural colors. The brightness and viewing angles are good, even if not on par with expensive smartphones (including Huawei smartphones). The protective glass is easily dirty.

Features Honor 7X

Honor has focused on building a sturdy 7X fodder. With built-in airbags, the four corners of your smartphone must withstand damage from a fall. However, in order to understand whether this is so in everyday life, we need to check it. At this point, we can confirm that he was not injured during the trial period, but we also treated him with due attention.

Honor 7X software

The Honor 7X runs Android 7.0 Nougat. While this is common practice among Android manufacturers, Oreo is expected to ship in a few months. The EMUI interface is available in version 5.1 and is visually neat and versatile and customizable.

By default the application, i.e. the section that collects all applications is deactivated. Then all icons are displayed on the home screen. If you prefer to sort them in a special box, you can do this by activating the highlighted item in the settings menu.

While the most expensive smartphones Honor and Huawei are now almost virus-free, the story changes with the cheaper models. You will find almost 10 third-party apps preinstalled, including 5 games. The user also receives a number of unsolicited tips for applications that may be of interest to them, but you can also disable this feature.

You can use the full screen format when displaying applications designed for the 16: 9 format by clicking the button at the bottom of the screen. In system settings, you can specify which applications to run in full format by default.

Honor 7X

The Honor 7X contains a Hisilicon Kirin 659 processor. The octa-core chip runs up to 2.3 GHz and has 4 GB of RAM. Enough to ensure a smooth experience in everyday use: Honor 7X does not show any friezes or other flaws.

This is a mid-range device despite having 4GB of RAM. In benchmark tests, he reported average results. Let's assume that hardcore gamers find the best Honor 7X alternatives on the market. With 64GB of internal storage, your smartphone offers ample space for photos, applications, music and movies. But if you need more space, you can insert a memory card or use two SIM cards at the same time.

Honor 7X test results

Honor 7X sound

Music lovers should choose a different device because the Honor 7X driver cannot meet the needs of the very serious music fans. The small speaker at the bottom of the smartphone doesn't promise anything good. At least Honor still has a beloved mini headphone jack.

Camera 7X

The dual camera on the Honor 7X body is flawless and comes with dual 16 + 2MP sensors. Two sensors allow for bokeh effect. But don't expect to shoot 4K video. The front panel is equipped with an 8 megapixel camera.

The 2MP dual-camera sensor is not used to improve image detail, but is used to record the necessary depth information, such as for photo focus adjustments, bokeh, or portrait mode. You can see which software advantages Huawei has over other manufacturers. Artificial blur rarely fails and works well in general. The trained eye can immediately recognize the difference between an artificial or real blurred effect.

The quality of the photos is more than impressive. Photos show beautiful colors and rich details, and the subject usually takes center stage. When the brightness is low, you will notice flaws in the footage.

The front camera does not offer portrait mode with bokeh, but it can smooth out wrinkles and beautify faces with little tricks that can be disabled.

Honor 7X battery

With 3,340mAh, the powerful battery of the Honor 7X keeps you day away from the outlet. During the test, our smartphone was able to stay alive for up to two days without recharging. The standby power consumption of the Honor 7X is pleasantly low and helps to ensure good battery life.

Fast charging or induction wireless charging technology is not available. It's a pity.

Final verdict

The Honor 7X performed well in our tests. The design is attractive, the software is functional, the large display pleases users, and the whole package is impressive. For a smartphone in this price range, the camera is especially good with two sensors, which allows you to do more than just one sensor.

The Honor 7X offers more options for display, storage and camera than other mid-range smartphones. On the other hand, in fact, this is a really up-to-date version of Android and less viruses. However, due to its reasonable price, the Honor 7X will undoubtedly be appreciated by many users.

The Honor X series of smartphones are extremely popular with users of Honor products. It is, perhaps, more successful than other devices of this brand, combining decent technical characteristics and a truly affordable price. At one time we witnessed the triumph of the 5X model, as well as a quite worthy continuation in the form of the Honor 6X. Today it's time to analyze in detail all the technical capabilities of the next representative of the legendary family - a smartphone called Honor 7X, presented at the end of the year in London.

Contents of delivery

The Honor 7X comes in a laconic blue matte cardboard box with a white logo.

Our test device came with a standard non-fast charging charger (5V 2A), a USB cable, and a card extraction tool.

Appearance and usability

The design of the Honor 7X is more reminiscent of the new product from the Huawei Nova 2 series than the flagship of its Honor 9 line. Whereas the most prominent feature of the case design is the luxurious glass back panel with a mirror backing, here the case is completely made of brushed metal.

At the same time, our hero looks almost like two drops of water on Huawei Nova 2, with the exception of small strokes, such as the shape of the grooves for the antennas and the location of the flash. There is also no bezel around the circular pad of the fingerprint scanner, which is more of a plus. But straight, without curly bends, grooves for antennas are more of a minus, since they visually make the design coarse and straightforward.

Miracles do not happen, a smartphone with a six-inch display cannot be sleek. The Honor 7X's body is large, heavy, and the hard matte metal surfaces glide very well in dry palms, as usual. Fingerprints on these matte surfaces are also surprisingly visible.

The protective glass has sloping edges, and an LED event indicator is installed above the screen. Here, by the way, there are no corners of the screen itself, like many other "full-screen" devices with displays increased from 5.5 to 6 inches due to reduced frames.

The frame around the screen has not gone anywhere, this is not a "frameless" option, as such "full-screen" smartphones are now called. From the sides, it sometimes even turns out to be wider, but the segments at the top and bottom of the new products with 18: 9 screens have narrowed to about a centimeter or even more, this is a fact, and rather encouraging. But on the other hand, such smartphones have neither a fingerprint scanner nor hardware touch buttons under the screen.

The fingerprint scanner was moved to the back side, its round platform is located next to the eyes of the dual camera. These elements have the same diameter, are placed symmetrically, but due to the fact that both cameras stick out, it still looks worse than if the modules were combined behind a single glass, like the iPhone Plus series, for example. There is also a single LED flash on the back. It is curious that these three elements are located strictly along the groove with the antennas.

The lenses stick out beyond the surface, but the area of \u200b\u200bthe back wall is so large (at the same time, it has no bevels) that the smartphone lying on the table hardly wiggles when you touch the screen. It is quite possible to work in this way with a smartphone.

You can install two SIM cards in the smartphone (both of Nano-SIM format) or replace one of them with a microSD memory card. Hot swap of cards is supported.

The mechanical buttons on the right side are large, comfortable, no complaints about them.

On the top end, you can find only a small hole for the auxiliary microphone, while the 3.5 mm audio-out for headphones, a spoken microphone and the main loudspeaker are brought out at the bottom end.

The smartphone is available in three colors: black, blue and gold.

Screen

The Honor 7X is equipped with an IPS display covered by 2.5D glass with sloping edges. The physical dimensions of the screen are 68 × 136 mm with a diagonal of 5.93 inches, an aspect ratio of 18: 9. At the same time, the screen resolution is 2160 × 1080 with a dot density of about 407 ppi. The frame around the screen is about 4 mm thick on the sides, and one centimeter at the top and bottom.

It is possible to use automatic brightness adjustment based on the operation of the ambient light sensor. Multi-touch tests diagnose support for 10 simultaneous touches.

A detailed examination using measuring instruments was carried out by the editor of the "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" sections Alexey Kudryavtsev... Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are slightly worse than that of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the turned off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - Honor 7X, then they can be distinguished by their size):

The screen on the Honor 7X is slightly lighter (the brightness in the photos is 123 versus 116 for the Nexus 7). The doubling of reflected objects in the Honor 7X screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass / air) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of intense ambient light, but their repair in the case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen, there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating, which is better in efficiency than that of the Nexus 7. Therefore, fingerprints are removed much easier and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and displaying the white field on the whole screen, the maximum brightness value was about 490 cd / m², the minimum - 2.5 cd / m². The maximum brightness is high, and given the good anti-glare properties, the readability of the screen, even on a sunny day outdoors, should be at an acceptable level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by the light sensor (it is located to the left of the front loudspeaker slot). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider, with which the user can try to set the required brightness level in the current conditions. We slightly increased the brightness in complete darkness and got the following result: in complete darkness, the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 20 cd / m2, in an office lit with artificial light (about 550 lux) sets it to 190 cd / m2, in a very bright environment (corresponds to the lighting outdoors on a clear day, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or slightly more) increases to 490 cd / m². The result suits us perfectly. It turns out that the automatic brightness control function works adequately and allows the user to customize his work for individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flickering either.

This smartphone uses an IPS-type matrix. The micrographs show the typical IPS sub-pixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of photomicrographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift, even with large gaze deviations from perpendicular to the screen and without inverting tints. For comparison, here are some photos showing the same images on the screens of Honor 7X and Nexus 7, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m², and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K.

White field perpendicular to screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field.

And the test picture:

The colors on the Honor 7X display are natural saturation, with the Nexus 7 and the test screen slightly differing in color balance.

Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens, but on the Honor 7X the contrast decreased to a greater extent due to the more black highlighting.

And a white box:

The brightness at the angle of the screens decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in exposure), but in the case of the Honor 7X, the drop in brightness is slightly greater. The black field, when deviated along the diagonal, is lightened to a medium degree and acquires a purple tint. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is the same!):

And from a different angle:

When viewed from a perpendicular view, the black field uniformity is good:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high - about 1600: 1. The response time for the transition black-white-black is 22 ms (10 ms on + 12 ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes 37 ms in total. The gamma curve, plotted using 32 points with equal intervals in terms of the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal a blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.09, which is slightly below the standard value of 2.2. Moreover, the real gamma curve almost does not deviate from the power dependence:

We did not reveal the presence of dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness in accordance with the nature of the displayed image, which is very good.

The color gamut is close to sRGB:

The spectra show that the matrix light filters mix the components together to a moderate extent:

As a result, the visual colors on this screen do not differ from the natural ones. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is not much higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the black body spectrum (ΔE) is below 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature and ΔE vary little from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of the color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance is not very important there, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

This device has the ability to correct the color balance by adjusting the hue on the color wheel.

The curves above Without corr. correspond to the results without any color balance correction, and the curves Corr. - data obtained after shifting the point to the position indicated in the picture above. It can be seen that the change in balance corresponds to the expected result, since the color temperature approached the standard value and ΔE decreased on average. However, it doesn't make much sense to perform the correction. Note that this function is implemented in a variant rather for show, since there is no numerical reflection of the correction and there is no field for measuring the color balance.

To summarize: the screen has a high maximum brightness and has good anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without problems even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is also acceptable to use a mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen include the absence of an air gap in the layers of the screen and flicker, an effective oleophobic coating, a good color balance and a color gamut close to sRGB. In general, the screen quality can be considered high.

Camera

The front camera has a sensor with a resolution of 8 megapixels. The lens has an f / 2.0 aperture and fixed focus. The quality of the shooting here is average, there is not much to praise the Honor 7X selfie camera for. The pictures taken in good lighting on the screen of the smartphone itself still look quite good, but when you start peering into the detail of the pictures taken indoors, you can see that it is low, the matrix is \u200b\u200bnoisy and the sensitivity is still not enough for it.

The rear camera is dual, but simpler than that of the Nova 2. The main module has a 16-megapixel sensor, and the auxiliary one is only 2 megapixels. The camera is equipped with an f / 2.2 aperture lens, there is no stabilization.

There is no intelligent scene recognition technology, as in the older models, but everything else is present, including the "wide aperture" mode to blur the background. Naturally, there is also the Pro manual settings mode. In manual mode, white balance, focus, light sensitivity, exposure compensation can be adjusted.

The camera can shoot video in a maximum resolution of 1080p at 30 fps. There are no higher modes, no stabilization. The quality of shooting is acceptable, for this level of a smartphone it is not bad, but there is not much to praise it for. Sound is recorded with high quality using sensitive microphones, the noise reduction system does not introduce noticeable distortions.

The camera is good. There are sometimes areas of blur at the edges, but in general, the detailing, even in the distant shots, is quite decent. In low light, the camera generally does well. She is also good at shooting text and macro. You can find traces of noise reduction and sharping in the pictures, but all this is not striking. As a result, the camera can be highly recommended for documentary and artistic photography.

Telephone part and communications

The communications capabilities of the Honor 7X include support for data rates up to 300Mbps on LTE Cat.6 networks. In the city limits of the Moscow region, the device behaves confidently, does not lose connection in places of poor reception, and quickly restores the connection. Bluetooth has version 4.2, one Wi-Fi band (2.4 GHz) is supported, there is no NFC module.

The navigation module works with GPS (with A-GPS), with domestic Glonass and with the Chinese Beidou. The first satellites during a cold start are detected within tens of seconds, the positioning accuracy is high. There is a built-in magnetic field sensor for compass operation.

The phone application supports Smart Dial, that is, when dialing a phone number, a search is immediately carried out by the first letters in contacts. Methods for setting the sorting and display of contacts are standard for the Android interface, there is a blacklist for unwanted contacts. There is a function of automatic recording of telephone conversations from the line. Vibrating alert of medium power.

The smartphone does not know how to support both SIM cards in 4G simultaneously in active standby mode. Here, one SIM card (not the one chosen for data transfer in 4G) will always work in anticipation only in 2G. The interface does not allow you to select a specific SIM card for sending SMS in advance - only for voice calls and data transfer (this is a standard situation for all Huawei smartphones). The cards work in Dual SIM Dual Standby mode, there is only one radio modem here.

Software and multimedia

As a software platform, the Android OS is not the most recent version 7.0 and Huawei's own shell of the latest version EMUI 5.1 - everything is the same as in other modern devices of the manufacturer. Naturally, there is an over-the-air upgrade (OTA) option.

The interface is designed in a familiar corporate style. There is a virtual button, multi-window mode, the ability to reduce keyboards and the working area of \u200b\u200bthe screen in size. As usual, there are a lot of pre-installed applications, some of them are useful, others are obviously superfluous. There are several Huawei proprietary utilities, including a useful phone manager responsible for monitoring the system, cleaning memory, scanning and protecting against viruses, blocking spam, etc.

As for the so-called "full-screen mode", which appeared due to the changed aspect ratio and, accordingly, additional space on the screen, it is not occupied by default, gaping with black stripes. It is possible to enter the settings and select the option of using the "full screen mode" for each of the applications, and after restarting the application will be displayed in full screen.

To listen to music, as usual, you use your own audio player with a familiar interface. Previously, it did not have any manual settings at all, and in the new versions, the Huawei Histen audio effects section appeared, in which you can enable the 3D sound effect and select from the equalizer presets - but all this becomes available only with headphones connected. In any case, both in the headphones and through the speaker, the smartphone sounds quite satisfactory, the Honor 7X does not offer anything special in terms of sound, but you cannot call the sound quality either.

Microphones have good sensitivity, the voice recorder is quite suitable for any task. The built-in FM radio is present, and this is good news.

Performance

The Honor 7X hardware platform is built on the HiSilicon Kirin 659 SoC. The chip configuration includes eight ARM Cortex-A53 processor cores in two clusters with a maximum frequency of 2.36 and 1.7 GHz. The SoC is made using a 16-nanometer process technology. Responsible for graphics processing is the ARM Mali-T830 (MP2) video accelerator with support for the OpenGL ES 3.2 graphics API. The amount of RAM is 4 GB, the built-in flash memory in the case of our sample is 64 GB. Of these, 2.48 GB of RAM is free and only 48.5 GB of storage space, usually more than 50 GB. There are modifications of Honor 7X with a different amount of internal memory.

There is also the possibility of expanding the memory by installing microSD cards, but applications are not installed on the memory card. You can connect external flash drives in USB OTG mode.

The HiSilicon Kirin 659 SoC is a relatively fresh solution for mid-range smartphones and tablets. The SoC is quite productive, the level of Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, in the AnTuTu test the hero of the review demonstrates quite worthy 60K-plus points, this is a confident average level.

Kirin 659 provides the system with sufficient performance and in real scenarios allows the smartphone to cope with any modern tasks. There are also no problems with the games, all the games we tested, including Injustice 2 and Mortal Kombat X, run without much slowdown, Lineage 2 can also be played quite comfortably without delay. However, the smartphone is designed rather for today, there is no noticeable power reserve for years to come.

Benchmarking AnTuTu and GeekBench:

All the results obtained by us when testing the smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks, we have summarized for convenience in tables. Several other devices from various segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions of benchmarks, therefore, many worthy and relevant models remain "behind the scenes" - due to the fact that they once passed the "obstacle course" on previous versions of test programs.

Testing the graphics subsystem in the game tests 3DMark, GFXBenchmark and Bonsai Benchmark:

When testing in 3DMark for the highest performing smartphones, it is now possible to run the application in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (which can cause the speed to rise above 60 fps).

Browser cross-platform tests:

As for benchmarks for evaluating the speed of the javascript engine, you should always make allowances for the fact that the results in them significantly depend on the browser in which they are launched, so that the comparison can be truly correct only on the same OS and browsers, and this possibility is available when testing not always. In the case of Android OS, we always try to use Google Chrome.

Thermal images

Below is a thermal image back surface obtained after 10 minutes of battery test in GFXBenchmark program:

It can be seen that the heating is more localized in the upper part of the device, which apparently corresponds to the location of the SoC chip. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was 39 degrees (at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees), which is not very much.

Video playback

To test the "omnivorous" video playback (including support for various codecs, containers and special features, such as subtitles), we used the most common formats, which make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that for mobile devices it is important to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, do not expect a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it. All results are tabulated.

Further testing of video playback by Alexey Kudryavtsev.

We did not find the MHL interface, like Mobility DisplayPort, in this smartphone, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see "Testing techniques for video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)"). Screenshots with a shutter speed of 1 s helped to determine the nature of the frame output of video files with different parameters: the resolution varied (1280 by 720 (720p), 1920 by 1080 (1080p) and 3840 by 2160 (4K) pixels) and the frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps). In our tests, we used the MX Player video player in Hardware mode. The test results are summarized in the table:

4K / 30p

well no

Note: If both columns Uniformity and Skips green ratings are set, this means that, most likely, when watching movies, artifacts caused by uneven alternation and skipping of frames will either not be visible at all, or their number and visibility will not affect the viewing comfort. Red marks indicate possible problems with the playback of the respective files.

According to the criterion for outputting frames, the quality of video files playback on the screen of the smartphone itself is good, since in most cases frames (or groups of frames) can (but are not required) to be displayed with more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels (1080p) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly along the edge of the screen, one to one pixel by pixel, that is, in the original resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235: except that in the shadows a couple of shades merge with black, but all gradations are displayed in the highlights.

Battery life

The non-removable battery found in the Honor 7X has a capacity of 3340 mAh - not a bad amount even by today's standards. And with such a battery, the smartphone demonstrates results that are quite consistent with its level in autonomy tests. Considering the large screen with high resolution, the results are quite decent.

In real life, the device behaves in the same way as most modern smartphones: it confidently survives until the evening charge, but you can't count on more.

Testing has traditionally been conducted at typical power consumption levels without using power saving features.

Battery capacity Reading mode Video mode 3D Game Mode
Honor 7X 3340 mAh 12h 00m 10h 00m 5h 00m
Sony Xperia XA1 2300 mAh 13h 00m 8h 30m 4h 10m

Nokia 5 3000 mAh 15h 20m 10h 30m 7h 00m

Continuous reading in the Moon + Reader program (with a standard, light theme) at the minimum comfortable brightness level (the brightness was set to 100 cd / m2) with auto scrolling lasted 12 hours until the battery was fully discharged, and with continuous viewing of high quality video (720p) with the device operates at the same brightness level via a home Wi-Fi network for about 10 hours. In 3D games mode, the smartphone can work no more than 5 hours.

Honor 7X does not support fast charging, the smartphone was charged for 2 hours 20 minutes with a current of 1.5 A at a voltage of 5 V from the bundled mains adapter (2 A 5 V). The smartphone also does not support wireless charging.

Outcome

Prices for the Huawei Honor 7X start at € 299 (or £ 269). In Russia, the device began to be sold in official retail on December 5, the recommended retail price for a modification with 64 GB of flash memory is currently 17 thousand rubles. For a nice smartphone of a popular brand with an attractive appearance, a practical all-metal body, a high-quality 6-inch screen with a high resolution and a narrow bezel, as well as quite decent hardware with good performance and support for LTE Cat.6 with a high data transfer rate, this is quite an adequate price. The smartphone does not shine with the quality of shooting, but it would be foolish to expect this at such a price. We can also negatively highlight the lack of NFC (and hence Android Pay). Otherwise, Honor 7X came out quite worthy successor to the glorious family of Huawei Honor in general and the Honor X line in particular.

Huawei is trying to find its place in all price segments of the smartphone market and every year it offers users new interesting solutions. The manufacturer pays attention to both flagships and state employees, so fans of the products of this corporation always have plenty to choose from. In pursuit of new customers and an increase in sales, Huawei Technologies, trying to bypass its closest competitors, such as Xiaomi and Meizu, comes up with quite interesting options, which are always interesting and exciting to consider.

That is why we decided to devote this article to one of them - Honor 7x. This is a very interesting mid-range model, which combines incredibly stylish design, good technical characteristics and quite affordable price.

Huawei Honor 7x design and equipment

The first thing that immediately caught my eye, as soon as we opened the box and took the device in hand, is its almost framelessness. No, of course there are frames here, but they are pretty minimal. The entire front panel is given under the screen, as if there are no indents on the sides at all, and the top and bottom frames look very laconic. The device itself is elongated, elongated and this form factor is very user-friendly. This has already been confirmed using this aspect ratio in their flagships, Samsung and LG, so the move is clearly a winning move. It turns out that a 5.93-inch display fits into a 5.5-inch device.

The device is very comfortable in the hand, as it has become customary for products from this Chinese brand, all the edges and corners are nicely rounded and the device does not cut the palm at all. The body is monolithic, made of high-quality aluminum, the back is smooth, the metal pleasantly cools the fingers when touched. In front, the entire area is covered with a reliable protective Gorilla Glass. The glass has a good oleophobic coating, it hardly stalks, but the prints remain a little on the metal, but they are not at all critical, so we did not attribute this to disadvantages. The Honor 7x smartphone looks minimalist, ultra-modern and expensive.

On the front side, we saw only:

  1. Silver Honor lettering in the middle, on the bottom frame.
  2. Selfie camera eye, earpiece grill, proximity and light sensors on the top frame.
There are no mechanical buttons here and all the keys are located on the screen area, which is very convenient and comfortable to use the device. On the top edge, there is only a hole for an additional microphone, which takes part in recording stereo sound, and during a conversation it plays the role of a kind of noise suppressor. The lower edge is equipped with:
  1. Main mono speaker grill.
  2. The main microphone hole.
  3. A jack for a headset or headphones of a standard type 3.5 mm mini-jack.
  4. MicroUSB input.
Unfortunately, the device lacks a USB Type-C port. It is very strange that the manufacturer did not think about this and did not allocate space for it, this would be an unconditional plus of the gadget.

All buttons, trays and regulators on the Honor 7x are in their usual places. On the right side, we saw:

  1. Power / lock button.
  2. Swing-volume control.
On the left side there is only a combined tray for two nanoSIMs or for one nanoSIM and a memory card.

Unfolding the device with the back to us, we found:

  1. Almost invisible Honor lettering at the bottom.
  2. A flash and two round, slightly protruding camera eyes closer to the upper left corner.
  3. Round fingerprint scanner.
The manufacturer offers users a choice of several color options for the Honor 7x smartphone, namely black, gold, red and blue.

We liked the blue one the most and we ordered it for testing. Expectations did not disappoint us and the body of this color really looks very fresh, stylish and attractive. The other two colors are also not bad, but in our opinion they are too commonplace, although of course it's a matter of everyone's taste. The gold version has a white front panel, the other two have black.

The dimensions of the Honor 7x smartphone are quite compact, so it easily fits even in the palm of a fragile girl. More specifically, the numbers are:

The Honor 7x is not overly heavy and yet feels like a solid metal device.

The device is assembled very well, nothing lags behind, does not rattle inside. It does not bend or deform with little effort. All parts of the device are perfectly matched to each other and it looks as a whole, like a truly monolithic, reliable structure.

The device comes to the future owner in a blue or even aquamarine compact box, which in the middle, on the front side, has the name of the product in small white letters - Honor 7x. Some additional information about this gadget and the conditions for its correct use is located on the back of the box.

Inside the package are:

  1. The Honor 7X smartphone itself is in a separate bag.
  2. USB cable.
  3. Charging 5V.
  4. A special paper clip which removes the sim tray or memory card tray.
  5. Manual instruction for the user.
  6. Warranty card.
Also, in some trim levels, a simple transparent silicone case is also provided - a trifle, but nice. Separately, it is worth mentioning that if you decide to purchase this device right now, then you should do it in the branded online store, because then you will receive such an interesting addition as the Honor Band 3 fitness tracker for the promotion.

Display Huawei Honor 7x

The smartphone's screen itself turned out to be quite successful, we had no complaints about it. In any light, the colors on it are beautiful, it is well calibrated, there is no noticeable shift to the cold or warm side, the shades are saturated, vivid and realistic, the margin of brightness and contrast is sufficient, the color gamut goes beyond the sRGB triangle. Moreover, if something in the factory calibration does not suit you, you can always adjust the color temperature of the device screen yourself.

The main technical characteristics of the display of the Honor 7x smartphone are as follows:

Diagonal5.93 inches
A typeLTPS IPS LCD capacitive
Resolution2160х1080 Full HD +
Pixel density407 ppi
Aspect ratio18:9
Color gamut16 million colors
Viewing anglesmaximum

We liked the lack of distortion and color changes when tilted in different directions. There is a vision protection mode, we tried reading at night for 4 hours and the eyes really did not get tired. Corning's 2.5D Gorilla Glass has proven itself well; it not only reliably protects the device's screen from damage, but also adds an effect of some volume to the image. The anti-glare properties in this case are quite average. When using the Honor 7x smartphone outside during the day, the sun still bothers us a little, although a sufficient supply of brightness, in principle, allowed us to read information from the screen normally.

Honor 7x cameras and sound

We liked the main camera, it is double, with 16 and 2 megapixel modules and phase detection autofocus. The camera lenses protrude slightly from the body, so the user should be aware of this and be careful not to scratch the modules. Better yet, immediately purchase a simple silicone case that will protect your device from such a nuisance if it did not come with your device.

As for the quality of the photos taken with the Honor 7x, everything turned out to be on the level. With sufficient lighting, the picture is simply amazing, autofocus does not make mistakes, and the colors delight with their saturation and realism. In conditions of twilight, a rather bright flash helps. Of course, you don't have to wait for miracles, it's still a smartphone, not a camera, but in comparison with competitors, the result is very good.

There are many different shooting modes, including manual mode, in which you can switch between different settings, adjusting the camera module to your needs. An interesting feature is the "live photo", which is quite popular today. The portrait mode also performed well. It automatically smoothes out flaws, and also has the ability to take a photo with a blurred background. Also, an interesting result with blurring the background can be obtained using the wide aperture mode. It imitates a high-aperture lens and allows you to set focus on a specific object while blurring secondary and unnecessary details. Video footage can be captured in 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second.

The front-facing camera of the Honor 7x is also quite good at 8 megapixels. Selfie photos with its help are beautiful, rich. Here, too, there is an opportunity to take a photo with a blurred background, remove minor defects, add vivid effects. A good addition can be considered a timer, which turns on after a hand gesture, pressing a button or touching the screen. In all these ways, you can launch a selfie camera. Thus, you have about three seconds left to put your hand back in place and smile. Also, pictures can be taken by voice command or programmed to trigger when a smile is detected.

The sound from the speaker is not the strong point of the Honor 7x. There is only one multimedia speaker inside and it is located closer to the bottom end. We liked the clarity of the audio and the overall sound quality, but lacked the headroom. In any case, to listen to music both outdoors and indoors, you should purchase a headset. By the way, when we connected headphones, we were able to appreciate the declared DTS audio technology.

Huawei Honor 7x - performance specifications

Inside is a HiSilicon Kirin 659 processor with eight Cortex-A53 cores, four of which operate at a maximum clock frequency of 2.36 GHz, and four more at 1.7 GHz. The performance of the device is quite enough for the most smooth operation, even in spite of the not at all small screen resolution.

Responsible for the graphics accelerator Mali-T830 MP2. When tested in games, the device performed well enough. It is clear that this is not a gaming device, so we did not load it with something very resource-intensive, but it coped quite well with simple and medium-sized applications. In Survivor Royale we set the settings to medium and there was some sagging.

As for memory, the Honor 7x has the following situation:

  1. RAM - 4 GB.
  2. Internal storage 64 GB.
Regardless of the device with how much flash memory you choose, you can always expand it by purchasing additionally and installing a MicroSD card up to 128 GB.

Honor 7x is delivered to the user with preinstalled Android 7.0 (Nougat) operating system and EMUI 5.1 proprietary shell, which has already earned positive reviews. There is evidence that an update to the eighth version of Android has already been announced.

As for the proprietary shell, here the situation is certainly not for everybody. Many people do not like some cartoonishness in the design, but from our point of view, this has its own charm. Also, we liked the large set of additional services and applications. If you are not using something and think that it takes up extra space that can be used for something more useful, then it can always be easily removed. I also liked the simplified menu with large icons and fonts - this is a really great way out for older users who find it difficult to understand a large number of different applications and technical innovations.

Autonomy, networks, smartphone sensors Honor 7x

A non-removable battery with a capacity of 3340 mAh is installed inside the device. Such a capacity should be enough for a day and a half with an average load, and even with a very high load, it should last a full working day. It will take you about 4 hours to recharge the battery from zero to 100%.

There is an "Ultra" power saving mode, it can really significantly extend the time of using the device, so you definitely do not have to worry that at the most inopportune moment you will be left without a functioning device.

There are no surprises with the connection, everything is quite standard:

  • 2G networks GSM 850/900/1800/1900 - SIM 1 & SIM 2 CDMA 800 & TD-SCDMA;
  • 3G networks - HSDPA 850/900/2100;
  • 4G networks - LTE band 1 (2100), 3 (1800), 5 (850), 8 (900), 38 (2600), 39 (1900), 40 (2300), 41 (2500).
Satellite navigation is represented by the already familiar GPS (A-GPS) and GLONASS systems.

Huawei Honor 7x has the following set of sensors:

  1. Illumination.
  2. Approximations.
  3. Accelerometer.
  4. Fingerprint scanner.
  5. Compass.
The work of the fingerprint scanner is excellent in our opinion. The device was correct and identified the owner even if the finger was applied at an angle. The unlocking of the device was actually carried out in 0.25 s declared by the manufacturer.

The following modules are responsible for the wireless connection in the Honor 7x smartphone:

  1. Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n.
  2. Bluetooth version 4.1.
Unfortunately, there is no NFC chip and we considered this, of course, a serious omission. After all, this technology does not go out of use and is becoming more and more in demand, people around the world are quite actively using it for payment. Therefore, installing such a chip would be the right step, which would add popularity to the device among users.

Smartphone Huawei Honor 7x: price, pros and cons of the model

We liked a lot when using the device, but there were also some drawbacks. Summing up, let's highlight:

prosMinuses
The popular and most user-friendly aspect ratio.Lack of USB Type-C connector.
High-quality and fairly durable aluminum case.Insufficient volume headroom at the speaker.
Bright and large screen.Lack of NFC chip.
Good hardware for this price category.Inconvenient location of the fingerprint scanner.
Relatively good memory capacity.
Good quality dual main camera and selfie module.Combined slot for a second SIM card and a flash drive.

The price of Huawei Honor 7x in Russia is 16,990 rubles.

Drawing conclusions from our acquaintance with the smartphone, I would like to say that the device, as for a state employee, turned out to be really decent. So, if you like this popular form factor today, you like to take beautiful photos, you are not an avid gamer and just want to be the owner of an incredibly stylish metal device with good filling at an affordable price - this is a great choice.

Video review of Huawei Honor 7x, see below:

Problem solved

Advantages: -Design - looks great in blue, clearly more expensive than its price. -Metal body - looks good and is 100% stronger than glass (like 9 Lite) or plastic. -Screen - almost 6 inches diagonal, FullHD, correct colors and good viewing angles. Fans of eye-burning AMOLED screens may pass by. -4GB of RAM - this is the golden mean for a smartphone. Apps switch instantly, you can split the screen between the two at once. -64GB of memory (50GB available) - if you do not try to take along a film library in HD quality or an archive of pictures for the last 5 years, then this will be more than enough. -The camera takes great pictures when shooting outdoors - clear, rich and contrast. I'm not fond of selfies, but for the sake of interest I tried it and the result was definitely pleasing. There are quite a lot of camera settings, although the phone cannot save images in RAW. -Cover included - transparent silicone from the "cheap and medium" series. With it, the appearance of the device suffers noticeably, but at the same time, practicality improves - it holds more confidently in the hands, does not crawl on the table and does not turn over because of the protruding camera. -The fingerprint scanner works instantly, besides, it is adapted not only for unlocking a smart. Disadvantages: -When shooting indoors, the photo quality drops sharply, clarity is lost and noise appears. -You can use either 2 SIM cards or 1 SIM + memory card. Some kind of penny savings for a not quite budget device. -It's not clear why we need a 2nd camera 2MP behind. My last phone was good at blurring the background with one. Of course, it may be involved in other functions, but the emphasis is on the bokeh effect. Commentary: Despite the disadvantages, in general, the phone is 100% satisfied. The price tag for the device is average today, and it is more or less the same everywhere (aliexpress does not count - there is no guarantee, unclear prospects and delivery times, you can get a device that does not support our LTE frequencies), but many large networks are luring with gifts given buying this Honor. The phone itself was taken from the network, where they gave a really good and not cheap (separately worth 3 thousand) wired headset as a gift. The phone is damn fast and the stupid thing peculiar to android has not yet been observed. There is enough RAM, the processor is not bad, but the video processor is weak. In games with complex graphics like tanks or a ruler, the settings will have to be reduced to a minimum. However, two-dimensional conditional klashofklens and the like fly without the slightest lags. The 8th androyd will definitely be - not so long ago there was testing of this version among volunteers in the official group in VK. There are no complaints about the quality of the connection - I can hear everything and the interlocutor can hear me perfectly. I have not read other reviews, but there will certainly be many dissatisfied with the lack of USB Type-C, NFC and not full support for WiFi frequencies. Each review is subjective, including mine, so I can honestly say that I personally do not care about all of the above. Micro-USB is a standard for the vast majority of current devices and it is easier to take one charge for all phones, cameras and other things on trips than to lug a whole bunch of them. NFC is not needed anywhere in our area - public transport does not support payment through it, and in a store it is easier and faster to pay with a bank card using the same technology.
