How to set up a router without the help of a specialist. Reset settings to original state. Setting up an internet connection

Good afternoon.

Despite the fact that today the model of the D-link DIR 300 router cannot be called new (it is slightly outdated), it is quite widely used. And by the way, it should be noted that in most cases it does its job perfectly: it provides all the devices in your apartment with the Internet, simultaneously organizing a local network between them.

In this article, we will try to configure this router using the quick settings wizard. Everything in order.

1. Connecting the D-link DIR 300 router to a computer

The connection is, in general, common for this type of router. By the way, the models of routers 320, 330, 450 are similar in settings to the D-link DIR 300 and are not much different.

The first thing you do is connect the router to your computer. The wire from the entrance, which you used to have connected to the network card of your computer - connect to the "internet" connector. Using the cable that comes with the router, connect the output from the computer's network card to one of the local ports (LAN1-LAN4) of the D-link DIR 300.

The picture shows the cable (left) for connecting a computer and a router.

This is actually all. By the way, pay attention to whether the LEDs on the router's body are blinking (if everything is fine, they should blink).

2. Configuring the network adapter in Windows

We will show the setting using the example of Windows 8 (by the way, in Windows 7 everything will be the same). By the way, it is advisable to first configure the router from a stationary computer, so we will configure the Ethernet * adapter (this means a network card connected to a local network and the Internet via a wire *)).
1) First, go to the OS control panel at: " Control Panel \\ Network and Internet \\ Network and Sharing Center". Here the section on changing adapter parameters is of interest. See screenshot below.

3) In the Ethernet properties, we need to find the line "Internet protocol version 4 ..." and go to its properties. Next, set the automatic receipt of the IP address and DNS.

After that, save the settings.

Now at the command prompt, type "ipconfig / all" and press Enter.

You should see the properties of all your adapters connected to the computer. We are interested in Ethernet, or rather its MAC address. In the screenshot below, we need to write down (or remember) the line "physical address", this is what we are looking for.

Now you can go to the router settings ...

3. Configuring the router

First of all, you need to go to the router settings.

Address: http://192.168.0.1 (type in the address bar of the browser)

Login: admin (in small Latin letters without spaces)

Password: most likely, this field can be left blank. If an error pops up that the password is not correct, try to enter admin in the fields and login and password.

3.1. Configuring PPPoE Connection

PPPoE is the type of connection used by many providers in Russia. Perhaps you have a different type of connection, you need to clarify in the contract or the technical support of the provider ...

First, go to the "SETUP" section (see above, right under the D-Link header).

By the way, perhaps your firmware version will be Russian, so it will be easier to navigate in it. Let's consider English here.

In this section, we are interested in the "Internet" tab (left column).

INTERNET CONNECTION TYPE - in this column you should select the type of your connection. In this example, we will select PPPoE (Username / Password).

PPPoE - here you select Dynamic IP and just below enter your username and password to access the Internet (this information is specified with your provider)

It is also important to note two columns.

MAC Address - remember we wrote down the MAC address of the adapter to which the Internet was previously connected a little earlier? Now you need to hammer this MAC address into the settings of the router so that it can clone it.

Connection mode select - I recommend choosing the Always-on mode. This means that you will always be connected to the Internet, as soon as the connection is broken, the router will try to restore it immediately. For example, if you select Manual, then it will connect to the Internet only at your direction ...

3.2. Wi-Fi setup

In the section "internet" (top), in the left column, select the tab " Wireless Settings«.

Here, check the box next to Enable. Now move down the page just below to the heading "Wireless Network Settings".

The main thing to note here is 2 points:

Enable Wireless - check the box (it means that you enable Wi-Fi wireless network);

Wireless Network name - enter the name of your network. Can be as arbitrary as you like. For example, "dlink".

To do this, under the heading "WIRELES SECURITY MODE" enable the "Enable WPA / WPA2 ..." mode as in the picture below.

Then, in the "Network key" column, specify the password that will be used to connect to your wireless network.

That's all. Save the settings and reboot the router. After that, your stationary computer should have the Internet, a local network.

If you turn on mobile devices (laptop, phone, etc. with Wi-Fi support), you should see a Wi-Fi network with your name (which you set just above in the router settings). Join it by specifying the password set a little earlier. The device must also be able to access the Internet and LAN.

This manual will describe in detail how to configure the D-Link DIR-300 Wi-Fi router. In particular, we'll talk about how to update the firmware on a router and why it is sometimes required, how to set up an Internet connection and what types of connection are used by different providers. It will also cover issues such as setting up a wireless Wi-Fi access point, how to put a password on a wireless network and connect various devices. At the same time, a video tutorial on setting up a DIR-300 router will be offered.

Wireless router (Wi-Fi router) D-Link DIR-300

Update: if your router has firmware 2.5.11 or 2.15.19 (in general, 2.5.x), and the settings interface is similar to the screenshot below, use this instruction:.

Things to do before setting up your router (router)

Even before you connect the router for its subsequent configuration, I recommend downloading the latest firmware file for your hardware revision.

What is hardware revision? Despite the common name of routers and the same appearance, D-Link DIR-300 are different. Here is a list of those that can be found on sale today:

  • DIR-300 A / C1
  • DIR-300NRU B5 / B6
  • DIR-300NRU B7

Hardware version of the router on the sticker

Each of them requires its own firmware. The hardware revision of the router is indicated on the sticker on its back, in the line H / W ver. In order to download the firmware for the router, go to the official D-Link website at ftp.dlink.ru, and follow the following path: pub - Router - your router model (DIR-300 or DIR-300NRU) - Firmware - hardware revision of the router. In the folder in which you find yourself, there will be one bin file and the “Old” folder. The mentioned file is the latest firmware for your device, and it should be downloaded to your computer. The Old folder contains old firmware for the router, which can also come in handy in some cases (unstable work on the new firmware).

The next action that is recommended to take before configuration is to reset the existing D-Link DIR-300 settings (if you have already tried to configure something yourself or it was configured for another Internet provider). To do this, use the Reset button on the back of the router: hold it down for 20-30 seconds, release it and wait about 30 seconds until the router reboots with factory settings.

And one more thing: in order to get into the settings panel of the router, in the properties of the local network connection, "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain a DNS server address automatically" should be set. You can find these parameters in the following places:

  • Windows 8 and 7 - "Control Panel" - "Network and Sharing Center" - "Change adapter settings" - "Local Area Connection" (right-click, properties) - "Internet Protocol version 4" - "Properties".
  • For Windows XP, the path is similar, the only thing is, in the control panel, go to the "Network Connections" folder, and already there, look at the properties of the local network connection.

In some cases and for some providers (Interzet, various providers providing services to legal entities), the parameters that were recorded in the properties of the local network connection (IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS servers) should be recorded somewhere. Even a little differently: if something was indicated in all these fields, then be sure to write down this data.

Despite the fact that connecting a router, it would seem, should not cause any difficulties, you often see the wrong options. This is due to the fact that even with an incorrect connection, you can achieve, for example, that one computer has the Internet and at the same time digital TV works. However, it does not become correct from this, and devices connected via Wi-Fi will report that "The connection is limited or not available" or "Without access to the Internet." The correct connection option is in the picture below.

Thus, the cable of your Internet provider (or the cable coming from the modem, if you have one) must be connected to the Internet port and only to it. The network card is connected to one of the LAN ports of the router using the supplied RJ-45 cable (standard network cable).

DIR-300 firmware

First of all, a little about why it is better to update the router's firmware than not to:

  • The DIR-300 router you bought from the store most likely has one of the first firmware versions. The manufacturer, in our case it is D-Link, regularly releases new versions in which various errors affecting the operation of the device are corrected (disconnections, the router cuts the speed, the settings get lost). Therefore, by updating the firmware before setting up the router, you can avoid many problems.
  • The firmware of the router itself does not present any particular difficulties and is available to anyone, even a "teapot". The main thing is that there is a normal leadership. This is exactly what you see in front of you.

The first step (provided that the router is already connected) is to launch any Internet browser on the computer and enter the following address in the address bar: 192.168.0.1, then press Enter.

You will be asked to enter a username and password. The standard login and password for all D-Link DIR-300s is admin (i.e., we write the same thing in both fields - admin). After logging in, you will be asked to change the default password for security purposes. Do this so that no one else can change the settings of your wireless router.

The next thing you will see is the router configuration interface, which, depending on the hardware revision and the current firmware, may have a different appearance.

This manual does not cover setting up DIR-300 B1-B3 (they are quite old and their owners, as a rule, have already learned how to set them up). Therefore, let's look at how to update the firmware in the last two options.

  1. For firmware 1.3, go to "Configure manually", select the "System" tab, and already in it - software update. Then you should click "Browse", specify the path to the new firmware file (how to download the new firmware was described earlier)
  2. For firmware 1.4, you need to select the "Advanced settings" item, then on the "System" tab, click the right arrow (shown there), select the Software update item, then click "Browse" and specify the path to the new firmware file.
  3. Press the "Update" button

After that, it remains only to wait for the end of the router firmware process.

How to set up a connection

The essence of setting up routers, including the D-Link DIR-300, is that the router itself initializes the Internet connection, distributing it to all other connected devices. The settings for this connection in the router interface are the main required action.

It should also be noted that when setting up the router, as well as after it, the previously used connection on the computer should no longer be connected. Those. if earlier on the computer you launched the connection of Beeline, Rostelecom, Aist, TTK, Dom.ru or any other, now you do not need to do this, otherwise, because the connection has already been established directly by the computer, the router, most likely, will not be able to establish it (in some cases, it is possible that several parallel connections work, but for most home Internet tariffs it will not).

Let's move on to setting up the connection. On the main page of the router settings at the bottom, click "Advanced settings", then on the "Network" tab, select "WAN" and click "Add" at the bottom of the page, which will display one connection with a dynamic IP address.

Now our task is to correctly fill in all the fields correctly, while the correctness is determined by what type of connection your provider uses:

  • Online - Dynamic IP, i.e. You don't even need to set up anything in the connection, the only thing you should take care of is the Wi-Fi password, which will be discussed below
  • Beeline - L2TP + Dynamic IP
  • Interzet - Static IP
  • Rostelecom, Domolink, TTK, Dom.ru - PPPoE
  • Stork - PPTP + Dynamic IP

Information about what type of connection your Internet provider uses can be easily found on the official website or you can see the properties of the connection that was used on the computer to access the Internet.

In most cases, all that needs to be filled in besides the type of connection is the login and password that you received from the service provider, as well as the address of the VPN server for providers using PPTP or L2TP connections.

After that, click "Save". And we find ourselves on the page with the newly created connection, which, as we are shown, is "broken". Also on the top right you will see an indicator informing us that the router settings have been changed and now they need to be saved (a second time). You should do this - otherwise, after restarting the router or when the power is turned off, all settings will be reset. Refresh the netlist page. If you configured everything correctly without confusing the password or connection type, it will turn green and the Internet will become available. You can proceed to setting up a wireless Wi-Fi network.

Setting up a Wi-Fi access point

In order to configure a wireless network (in fact, it is already working, but it would be better if you name it somehow and put a password on Wi-Fi), go to the advanced settings page of the DIR-300 router and on the Wi- Fi click on the link "Basic settings".

On the page that appears, you can specify the name of the access point SSID, by which you will recognize your wireless network among neighbors. You can also change other parameters here, but in most cases this is not required. Save the settings.

After that, on the same Wi-Fi tab, select "Security Settings". Here we can put a password on the D-Link DIR-300 Wi-Fi router. To do this, select WPA2-PSK in the "Network authentication" field, and enter the desired password for the access point in the "PSK encryption key" and save the settings.

That's all, the DIR-300 router can be considered configured, now you can connect to it any devices that support a Wi-Fi connection, as well as a local network. If you use digital television, then on the main settings page in the "IPTV settings" item, specify one of the ports as dedicated for TV and connect a set-top box to it.

IP cameras, etc.

Today we will look at how to set up a D-Link DIR-300 wireless home router.

An example setting will be done for a router with firmware 2.04., As always, using the web interface.

Important: Please note that the configuration of the same router models with different firmware may differ.

Step 1. Connecting the router to the PC

1. Connect one of the network cable connectors to one of the router, and the other to the corresponding connector to your laptop or computer.

Connect the WAN port to the ISP's Internet cable.

2. Turn on the power to the router.

3. Make sure that the DHCP mode is selected in the properties of the PC network connection, which is responsible for obtaining an IP address in automatic mode.

The DHCP server mode is enabled by default in all routers, so this item is relevant for a router on which no settings have been made.

If you have already configured it and the automatic distribution of IP addresses is turned off, and you do not know which IP address is assigned to the router, you must reset its settings.

The settings are reset by pressing the Reset button and holding it for 10 seconds.

When performing a factory reset, the router must be connected to the mains.

4. After completing the three previous steps, the computer will receive an IP address and now you can enter the router interface.

IP address for D-Link home devices - 192.168.0.1 (by default), we drive it in the address input line in any browser.

If settings were made with the router and it is not possible to access it, you need to find out its IP address or, if this is not possible, reset all settings.

The default login is “admin” without quotes, the password is the same. By clicking the "Log In" button, we will go to the settings of the router.
5. There is currently no password to access the router. Therefore, the first thing that usually begins with setting up a router is setting a password or replacing the standard one.

Section "MAINTENANCE", tab "Device Administration".

The password is entered in the "New Password" field, and then re-enter the password in the "Confirm Password" field. We save the changes by clicking on "Save Settings".

Step 2. Algorithm for deploying a wireless network

1. To configure the wireless network in manual mode, press the “Manual Wireless Connection Setup” button located in the “SETUP” section of the “Wireless Setup” menu.

2. Let's go to the "WI-FI PROTECTED SETUP" section.

Here you need to uncheck the Enable field, disabling the "Wi-Fi Protected Setup" mode, because this mode is not always supported by wireless adapters.

3. In the "WIRELESS NETWORK SETTINGS" section, in the "Wireless Network Name" field, indicate the name that will be assigned to the wireless network. The default network name is dlink.

4. In other articles, we chose automatic channel search by putting a tick in the "Enable Auto Chanel Selection" box, but today we uncheck the box, and in the "Wireless Chanel" field we select the channel manually.

Let's set the 4th channel for example.

5. In the "WIRELESS SECURITY MODE" section in the "Security Mode" field, select the most secure option "Enable WPA / WPA2 Wireless Security (enhanced)".

6. In the WPA / WPA2 section, in the "Cipher Type" encryption protocol selection field, set "TKIP".

In the field for selecting the "PSK / EAP" authentication protocol, and in the "Network Key" field, write the secret password for connecting to the wireless network.

The hint at the bottom of the field says that the minimum password length must be 8 characters.

Typically, a 16–20 character password containing letters and numbers is sufficient to protect the configured wireless network from unauthorized interference.

We save the settings by clicking the "Save Settings" button.

Step 3. Algorithm for setting up an Internet connection

In this section, we will look at configuring a PPPoE connection with a dynamic IP address. For this:

1. Go to the "SETUP" section, press the "Manual Internet Connection Setup" button.

2. In the “INTERNET CONNECTION TYPE” menu, select “Russia PPPoE (Dual Access)” from the list.

3. In the "RUSSIA PPPOE (DUAL ACCESS)" menu, put a tick in the "Dynamic PPPoE" field.

Fill in the fields "User Name", "Password", "Confirm Password" according to the login and password specified in the agreement with the Internet provider.

We replace the MAC address of the router with the MAC address of the computer by clicking the "Clone MAC Address" button. Do not forget to enable the permanent connection mode - check the "Always" box.

4. Save the changes made by clicking the "Save Settings" button.

To check the Internet connection, go to the "STATUS", "Device Info" section.

Please note in the "INTERNET" field there should be an inscription "DHCP client Connected", which indicates the establishment of a connection, and all the fields below must be filled in.

Step 4. Creating backup copies of settings

After completing all the settings and checking the Internet connection, we recommend making a backup copy of the router settings. This requires:

1. Go to the "MAINTENANCE" section, the "Save and Restore" menu.

2. To save the settings, click the "Save" button, after specifying the location of the file.

To restore the saved settings, click "Browse", select the file with the settings and click the "Upload Settings" button.

Be careful, executing the “Restore Device” command will reset all the router settings to factory defaults.

Good day.

In order to organize a wireless Wi-Fi network at home and give access to the Internet to all mobile devices (laptops, tablets, phones, etc.), you need a router (even many novice users are already aware of this). True, not everyone decides to independently connect it and configure ...

In fact, the majority can do it (I do not take into account the exceptional cases when the Internet provider creates such a "jungle" with its own parameters for accessing the Internet ...). In this article I will try to answer all the most frequent questions that I heard (and still hear) when connecting and configuring a Wi-Fi router. So let's get started ...

1) What kind of router do I need, how to choose it?

Perhaps this is the first question that users who want to organize a wireless Wi-Fi network at home ask themselves. I would start this question with a simple and important point: what services does your Internet provider provide (IP telephony or Internet TV), what Internet speed do you expect (5-10-50 Mbps?), And for what protocol you are connected to the Internet (for example, now popular: PPTP, PPPoE, L2PT).

Those. the functions of the router will begin to draw by themselves ... In general, this topic is quite extensive, therefore, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with one of my articles:

search and selection of a router for home -

2) How to connect the router to the computer?

As a rule, a power supply unit and a network cable for connecting to a PC are included with the router itself (see Fig. 1).

By the way, please note that on the back of the router there are several jacks for connecting a network cable: one WAN port and 4 LAN ( the number of ports depends on the router model. In the most common home routers, the configuration is as in Fig. 2).

Figure: 2. Typical rear view of the router (TP Link).

An Internet cable from the provider (which was most likely connected to the PC's network card earlier) must be connected to the blue port of the router (WAN).

With the cable that comes with the router, you need to connect the computer's network card (where the provider's Internet cable was previously connected) to one of the LAN ports of the router (see Fig. 2 - yellow ports). By the way, in this way you can connect several more computers.

At an important moment! If you do not have a computer, you can connect the port of the router with a LAN cable with a laptop (netbook). The fact is that the initial configuration of the router is better (and in some cases, otherwise impossible) to carry out via a wired connection. After specifying all the basic parameters (configure a wireless Wi-Fi connection), the network cable can be disconnected from the laptop, and then work via Wi-Fi.

As a rule, there are no questions about connecting cables and power supplies. Let's assume that your device is connected, and the LEDs on it started blinking :).

3) How to enter the router settings?

This is probably the key question of the article. In most cases, this is done quite simply, but sometimes ... Let's look at the whole process in order.

By default, each router model has its own address for entering the settings (as well as login and password). In most cases, it is the same: http://192.168.1.1/ however, there are exceptions. Here are a few models:

  • Asus - http://192.168.1.1 (Login: admin, Password: admin (or empty field));
  • ZyXEL Keenetic - http://192.168.1.1 (Login: admin, Password: 1234);
  • D-LINK - http://192.168.0.1 (Login: admin, Password: admin);
  • TRENDnet - http://192.168.10.1 (Login: admin, Password: admin).

At an important moment! It is impossible to say with 100% accuracy what address, password and login your device will have (even despite the stamps I mentioned above). But in the documentation for your router, this information is necessarily indicated (most likely, on the first or last page of the user manual).

Figure: 3. Entering a login and password to access the settings of the router.

For those who failed to enter the settings of the router, there is a good article with the analyzed reasons (why this could happen). I recommend using the tips, link to the article below.

How to log in at 192.168.1.1? Why does not come, the main reasons are

How to enter the Wi-Fi router settings (step by step) -

4) How to set up an Internet connection in a Wi-Fi router

Before describing these or those settings, a small footnote should be made here:

  1. First, even routers from the same model range can be with different firmware (different versions). The settings menu depends on the firmware, i.e. what you will see when you go to the settings address (192.168.1.1). The language of the settings also depends on the firmware. In my example below, I will show the settings of a popular router model - TP-Link TL-WR740N (the settings are in English, but it's not so difficult to figure them out. Of course, it's even easier to set up in Russian).
  2. The router settings will depend on the network organization of your Internet provider. To set up a router, you need information on the connection (login, password, IP addresses, connection type, etc.), usually all that is needed is contained in the Internet connection agreement.
  3. For the above reasons, it is impossible to give universal instructions that are suitable for all occasions ...

Different Internet providers have a different type of connection, for example, Megaline, ID-Net, TTK, MTS, etc. use a PPPoE connection (I would call it the most popular). Plus, it provides higher speed.

When connecting PPPoE to access the Internet, you need to know the password and login. Sometimes (like in MTS) PPPoE + Static Local is used: access to the Internet will be provided, after entering the password and login for access, the local network is configured separately - you will need: IP address, mask, gateway.

Required settings (for example PPPoE, see Fig. 4):

  1. You need to open the "Network / WAN" section;
  2. WAN Connection Type - indicate the type of connection, in this case PPPoE;
  3. PPPoE Connection: Username - specify the login for accessing the Internet (specified in your agreement with the Internet provider);
  4. PPPoE Connection: Password - password (similar);
  5. Secondary Connection - here either we do not specify anything (Disabled), or, for example, as in MTS, we specify Static IP (depending on the organization of your network). Usually, this setting item affects the access to the local network of your Internet provider. If you don't need it, you don't have to worry too much;
  6. Connect on Demand - establish an Internet connection as needed, for example, if a user turns to an Internet browser and requests a page on the Internet. By the way, please note that there is a column below Max idle Time - this is the time after which the router (if it is idle) will be disconnected from the Internet.
  7. Connect Automatically - connect to the Internet automatically. In my opinion, the optimal parameter, and you need to choose it ...
  8. Connect Manually - manually connect to the Internet (inconvenient ...). Although some users, for example, if limited traffic - it is quite possible that this type will be the most optimal, allowing them to control the traffic limit and not go into the red.

Figure: 4. Setting up PPPoE connection (MTS, TTK, etc.)

It is also worth paying attention to the Advanced tab - in it you can set DNS (they are sometimes necessary).

Figure: 5. Advanced tab in TP Link router

Another important point - many ISPs bind your MAC address of the network card and do not allow you to access the Internet if the MAC address has changed ( approx. each network card has its own unique MAC address).

Modern routers can easily emulate the desired MAC address. To do this, open the tab Network / MAC Clone and press the button Clone MAC Address.

Alternatively, you can tell your new MAC address to your ISP and they will unblock it.

Note. The MAC address looks like the following line: 94-0C-6D-4B-99-2F (see Figure 6).

Figure: 6. MAC address

By the way, for example in “ Billine »Connection type is not PPPoE, and L2TP... The setup itself is done in the same way, but with some caveats:

  1. Wan Connection Type - the type of connection must be selected L2TP;
  2. Username, Password - enter the data provided by your internet provider;
  3. Server IP-address - tp.internet.beeline.ru;
  4. save the settings (the router must reboot).

Figure: 7. Configuring L2TP for Billine ...

Note. Actually, after the entered settings and restarting the router (if you did everything correctly and entered exactly the data that you need), in your laptop (computer), which you connected via a network cable, the Internet should appear! If this is the case, it remains only a small matter to set up a wireless Wi-Fi network. In the next step, we will do this ...

5) How to set up a wireless Wi-Fi network in a router

Setting up a wireless Wi-Fi network, in most cases, comes down to specifying the network name and password to access it. As an example, I will show the same router (although I will take the Russian firmware to show both the Russian and English versions).

First you need to open the Wireless section, see fig. 8. Next, set the following settings:

  1. Network name - the name that you will see when searching for and connecting to a Wi-Fi network (specify any);
  2. Region - you can specify "Russia". By the way, many routers don't even have such a parameter;
  3. Channel width, Channel - you can leave Auto and do not change anything;
  4. Save your settings.

In the presented topic, let's talk about how to configure the D-Link DIR-300 router. This model of the router is the most popular among users, so questions on setting it up are relevant to this day. As an example, we will make all the settings on the DIR-300 Wi-Fi router, revision NRU B5, from the Internet provider Rostelecom. In particular, we will consider the process of connecting a router, setting up a wired and wireless Wi-Fi network, setting a password to enter its interface and to connect to a wireless network. In short, everything you need to create an internet connection and a home local network.

Connection

Before configuring the D-Link DIR-300 router, of course, it must be connected to the Internet and to a personal computer. The router has its own connector on the rear panel for each of these connections.

As you can see, to create an Internet connection, the "Internet" connector of the same name is intended, into which you need to plug the provider's cable. All the other 4 LAN connectors are designed for wired connection of any peripheral devices - computer, TV, media player, receiver, etc. In short, everything that has support for this type of connection and can be part of a local network for exchanging various kinds of data and accessing the Internet.

Also on the rear panel there is a "Reset" button, designed to reset all settings to factory settings. Resetting is done by long pressing the button for 5-10 seconds.

The front panel of the device contains indicators for monitoring its operating status and all connections.

  1. Power indicator
  2. Internet connection. Has three signal types - green (connection established), yellow (no connection), and flashing green (data transfer)
  3. Wi-Fi wireless connection indicator. Also has 2 types of signal - green (connection established) and flashing green (data transfer)
  4. Indicators of connected devices. Like all others, a green light indicates that the connection is established. Flashing green that there is no connection

Presetting a connection in Windows

Before proceeding with the settings of the DIR-300 router, or any other, you need to make certain connection settings in the operating system itself.

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that the procedure for setting up a connection in Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 is identical.

So, we need to look at the properties of the Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP / IPv4). Then write them down or make a change. This is done simply. Hover the mouse cursor over the connection icon in the notification area and right-click on it and select the "Network and Sharing Center" item.

After that, click on the wired connection icon with the right mouse button and select "Properties" in the context menu.

At the next step, we find the TCP / IPv4 protocol of interest to us and again click on "Properties".

After all the actions done, we find ourselves in the section we need, in which it is desirable to check the boxes - to get the IP and DNS server addresses automatically. This will allow you to connect your computer to a local network without the risk of conflict with other network devices at the network address level.

If you did not have these checkboxes in the protocol properties by default, then just in case, rewrite all the settings to a file and save it. Perhaps, if it becomes necessary to assign a static IP address to each device in the local network, these settings can be useful.

Configuring the D-Link DIR-300 router

So, let's proceed to the direct settings of the router. To do this, as mentioned earlier, it must be connected to a computer or laptop. To open the interface of the D-Link DIR-300 router, you need to enter its IP address in the address bar of any browser. As a rule, it looks like - 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.

You can verify which network address of your device is by looking at the label glued to the bottom of the router.

After entering a valid IP-address, a window for entering a username and password will open. As you can see from the screenshot above, the default login and password are identical and look like - admin.

Having entered the administration panel of the D-Link DIR-300 router, you can proceed to its main settings. First of all, we are interested in setting up an Internet connection. To do this, open the "Network" section and click on this type of connection "WAN".

Its settings window will open, where you need to select the type of connection. There are two types to choose from - IPoE and PPPoE. Which of them to enter you can see in the agreement concluded with the provider or from a technical specialist by calling the technical support of the provider.

In addition, there are several other settings on this page that may be useful.

  • MAC is a unique network identifier. It may come in handy if your network device is bound by MAC address. If so, then in this field you need to enter the MAC address of your PC's network card. How to find it out is described in detail in
  • Obtain an IP address automatically - check the box if you have set the appropriate setting at the stage of configuring the TCP / IPv4 protocol
  • Obtain the DNS server address automatically - similar to the previous point.

Setting up a wireless connection

To access the Internet via a router via a wireless connection, you need to connect this function. To do this, go to the "Wi-Fi" - "General settings" section and check the "Enable wireless connection" box.

To name the network, go to the "Basic settings" and enter the invented name in the "SSID" field. Immediately select one of the wireless network operating modes. The optimal one is 802.11 b / g / n, as shown in the screenshot.

To set a password, go to the "Security settings" section, where in the "Network authentication" column we set everything as in the screenshot below and enter the password in the "PSK encryption key" field.

note: the invented password will be required when connecting any mobile device to the created Wi-Fi network. Therefore, it is better to remember it. Otherwise, you will have to go to the router settings again to remember it.

Setting a new password to enter the admin panel of the router

After all the necessary settings are made, it is better to secure yourself and change the password for entering the admin panel, which by default corresponds to the login, to a more secure one. To do this, open the "System" section and write a new security code in the "Administrator password" item, after which we save the settings.

This completes the configuration of the DIR-300 router to create a wired and wireless Internet connection. If you need to create a local network within which you can exchange files, listen to music and watch movies, for example, from a computer on a smartphone, then here you need to make a number of additional settings, the list of which includes - creating work and home groups, opening shared access to folders and files, etc. However, the process of setting up a local network via a DIR-300 Wi-Fi router is described in detail in.
