Samsung ML cartridges. SAMSUNG ML Printers Dedicated Dust Protection

There are many models with compact dimensions and high performance on the printing equipment market. However, not all of them provide low noise during operation and are distinguished by ergonomic control. Moreover, the wide functionality implies the complication of the interface. Still, the Samsung ML-1640 combines good printing capabilities with balanced options without compromising user comfort.

General information about the model

The printer is a traditional laser equipment designed for home and small office printing. The first thing that may surprise in this development is its small size. In terms of performance, the technique does not lose to competitive models from the segment leaders, but at the same time, the creators managed to enclose the working stuffing in a modest-sized body.

This feature makes the Samsung ML-1640 model attractive for use in tight office spaces. However, this development cannot be attributed to the middle class of powerful printers either. And not only because of the limited possibilities of printing production, but also because of certain disadvantages associated with the low reliability of the working process. For office models that work at a fast and continuous pace, reliability is important, and, unfortunately, the Korean printer cannot boast of this quality. True, he has many other useful qualities.

Printer specifications

Functional mechanisms have not been sharpened to meet the high requirements of production, but they are sufficient for solving common household tasks. And this is not to mention the generally good quality that Samsung ML-1640 provides, provided that the appropriate consumables are used.

The specifications for this printer are shown below:

  • Printing productivity - 5000 pages / month.
  • The size of sheets for printing is A4 maximum.
  • The speed of operations is about 16 ppm.
  • Resolution in black and white printing format - 1200x600 dpi.
  • The time interval before the release of the first print on the sheet is 10 sec.
  • Paper feed - Standard 150 sheets.
  • Conclusion - 100 sheets.
  • Cartridge type - MLT-D108S.
  • Resource of cartridges - up to 1,500 pages.
  • The printer's memory capacity is 8 MB.
  • Interfaces - USB.
  • The noise level is 50 dB.

Technological features of the model

Although the model is focused only on the production of black and white printing, it includes a fairly wide functional base. In particular, Samsung ML-1640 can be combined with Windows, Mac and Linux software platforms. In part, this aspect expands the possibilities of using the equipment not only at home. The universal interface shell also simplifies the approaches to organizing the workflow. The large loading capacity of the tray and good printing speed also increase interest in the model from various consumers.

Energy saving should be noted separately. To save energy, a special mode is provided. It also saves on average 30% toner compared to competitors in its class. At the same time, the print quality of Samsung ML-1640 is preserved. The cartridge also does not restrict the operation of the printer, allowing you to cope with large volumes of work. As for the application of relatively different techniques, the targets for this model are ordinary A4 sheets, labels with cards, as well as recycled and thin film material.

Positive feedback on the model

The model is inexpensive, productive by average and functional. These qualities can be put at the top of the list of characteristics that are noted in positive reviews. It is energy efficiency and low printing costs that make this machine popular in small offices. Sometimes such equipment is also used in professional needs, where a combination of optimal quality and increased print speed is required, but there are already other limitations in terms of reliability.

To the pluses, many owners refer to the ergonomics of the Samsung ML-1640. Reviews of the case emphasize the combination of traditional and neat design with compact dimensions. The printer can be installed in a corner on the table, and this will not affect the ease of use during work.

Negative reviews

Unfortunately, there are also negative impressions from using the Korean printer. The refueling of the printer, which is carried out according to the classical scheme using chip cartridges, received a lot of criticism. By the way, experienced users initially recommend doing a flashing of the system, which will allow installing filled cassettes without reading information through the boards. Zeroing is undesirable, since it gives only a short-term result.

There are also negative reviews in terms of the direct working qualities of the Samsung ML-1640 printer. Reviews in some cases note a slow start to printing. However, the speed of the initial capacity utilization depends on the complexity of the operation. The mechanisms for loading paper to start the process do not cause any complaints, but in the work itself under conditions of overload, the equipment can fail. In this regard, the absence of modern devices for protecting electronic filling is also noted.

Conclusion

With the development of printing technologies, the range of functions with which such equipment is equipped already in basic versions is also expanding. As a rule, a new option only overloads the technical stuffing, but does not fundamentally affect the quality of work. But the cost from the introduction of new opportunities increases by tens of percent.

In turn, the Samsung ML-1640 printer shows another example - a balanced combination of performance and price tag. We can say that all the functions and performance of this device are fully within its cost. It is not high, so you should prepare for the common disadvantages of budget technology. In this case, they are expressed in a small volume of cartridges, modest print settings and some problems with electronic filling. These disadvantages are compensated by the compact size of the case and simple control of the equipment.

Samsung ML-1210 is a laser printer for small and medium-sized office, which stands out from the class of inexpensive monoxide laser printers with a powerful 66 MHz processor and 8 MB of memory. At the moment, it is laser printers that are becoming more common. Samsung has long and firmly taken its place in this niche. There is a wide range of printers on the Russian market for any task and price. Today we will dwell in more detail on the budget model of the Samsung ML-1210 printer, the appearance is shown in the photo.

Printer Features

The printer has a small external dimensions and a weight of only 6 kg, which fits well into the concept of a desktop. In the operating mode it is quite quiet, you can hear more rustling of the papers being pulled.

The main characteristics of this cute product are as follows:

  • small office laser printer;
  • the ability to print up to 12,000 pages per month;
  • average print speed of standard text up to 12 sheets per minute;
  • maximum resolution 600x600 dpi, warm-up time 35 seconds;
  • the output tray can hold up to 100 sheets of A4 paper.

Laser Printer - Bottom View

The disadvantages of purchasing this product can be considered the lack of a USB A-B cable for connecting the device to a computer, and the initially installed starter cartridge. The starter cartridge only yields approximately 1,000 pages, up from the full 2,500 pages of the regular cartridge. The printer provides another very interesting feature - toner save mode.

Enabling this button increases the yield of the cartridge from 2,500 to 3,500 pages, which is a very significant difference, and especially the externally printed pages do not differ. When printing tables and diagrams, it is better, of course, to disable this function for a more colorful display of data.

There is another option on the printer control panel that cannot be ignored. A very useful button for manual printout of a demo page and also, in combination, so to speak, performs the function of reprinting the last job. Even if the computer has already closed the document that was printed and consisted of one page, in the printer's memory equal to eight megabytes, the page remains and can be easily printed.

About drivers

If you purchased a new printer with a complete set, then a disk with a set of drivers is required. The installation process is completely standard and there is no point in describing it. If the printer was taken from the hands, for example, according to ads on Avito, then the native disk in the kit may no longer be. By the way, on a note - these printers are quite tenacious and tolerate various movements well. So with a resource of 50-60 thousand pages, the wear of the printer is still minimal.

Where can I get, for example, a driver for a Samsung ML-1210 printer on Windows 7? It's simple, we type in any Internet search engine "Samsung official website", and go to the Samsung website. In the upper right part of the main page we find the "Support" menu item and click on it, then you need to select the type of product, we need the "Printers and MFPs" group, after loading the list we find the printer we need and select the type of operating system, Windows 7 will be relevant.

In just a few minutes, the more accurate time depends on the speed of your Internet connection, a zip archive with the drivers is downloaded, and after extraction, a set of drivers is installed.

Useful and useful functions of the print driver setting can be performed by:

  • place and print on one side of the sheet up to 16 sheets of miniatures;
  • print with image scaling from 10 to 100%;
  • the ability to split the image for printing a poster into 36 sheets (square with a side of 6x6 sheets);
  • printing overlays and watermarks.

Pretty serious functionality from the manufacturer's factory, especially just for a home printer, isn't it?

About cartridge

The starter cartridge installed at the time of purchase in the Samsung ML-1210 printer has a resource of only 700-1000 pages, but you can refill it, then the resource will be 2,500 pages in standard printing mode. The cartridge model used in the Samsung ML-1210D3 printer. The cartridge does not have any additional chips, the refueling consists in cleaning the cartridge from toner residues, visual inspection for defects and refilling about 160 grams of toner. The cartridge is ready for use!

At the end of the review, let's take a look at a small but very unpleasant problem that often occurs - the Samsung ML-1210 printer does not pick up paper. The problem is with the pick roller and needs to be serviced to solve it. To do this, armed with a screwdriver, disassemble the printer case by unscrewing the mounting screws.

Unscrew the three screws securing the laser, remove the two electronics connectors and take out the laser. It is advisable to wipe the glass with a clean cloth. So we got to the actual hero of the occasion, the capture video. It is mounted on two screws that must be unscrewed, removed the roller and cleaned with a liquid, for example Platenclene. We recommend cleaning the brake pad located in the printer directly under the pick roller. Clean the printer itself and reassemble in the reverse order.

The compact and stylish Samsung ML-2160 laser printer combines high performance, cost-effectiveness and easy cost management to keep your budget in check. The Samsung ML-2160 printer is fast, easy to use and has a number of innovative features. Print quickly, efficiently and save time and space with the ML-2160.

Introduction In the recent past, in the computer press, the statement "the user is tired of monotonous gray boxes" was quite often encountered. It is difficult to argue with him - indeed, when computers gradually turned from a purely working tool into a familiar part of the home environment, "unexpectedly" (in fact, of course, just as unexpectedly as winter comes every year for our motorists and road services) for buyers began to acquire value not only technical characteristics, but also appearance.

Ten years ago, the vast majority of computers looked almost the same: a large rectangular box of light gray or light cream, next to or on top of a CRT monitor of the same color: this combination was still suitable for fairly typical light gray furniture for offices, but at home it looked completely foreign object. When was the last time you met a video recorder or a music center in the form of a gray steel box? But a modern computer, in fact, has already become the same household appliance - moreover, for many people it has replaced both the VCR and the music center at once.

However, that is the case for years gone by, but now we have a very rich assortment of cases and monitors that satisfy a variety of aesthetic needs - both in color and shape. Moreover, cases made of black glossy plastic are especially popular among buyers: although it is rather impractical (glares, easily gets dirty, easily scratches), it is beautiful and fits well into the home environment.

At the same time, alas, manufacturers of various "optional" peripherals are still far behind the manufacturers of cases and monitors: one glance is enough to a catalog of, say, laser printers, to understand - even having decreased in size in recent years, by design they have generally remained the same boring gray office boxes.

One could assume that the reason for this is the low prevalence of "lasers" at home - however, this argument is somewhat outdated: not everyone needs color printing, and in black and white, even the simplest laser printer will easily outperform any inkjet printer in terms of speed, and in terms of quality and cost per print.

In addition, laser printers are also quite inconvenient in their design - as a rule, a fairly small table is assigned to a home computer, while a printer requires a lot of free space for installation. As in height - the control and the tray for printed sheets are located on the top cover, and in length - the tray for blank paper usually protrudes strongly forward and closes only if there is no paper in it.

However, today we have the opportunity to present you a laser printer, the design of which can be called, if not revolutionary, then at least noteworthy - Samsung ML-1630.

Appearance

The ML-1630 printer perfectly matches the saying “it is better to see once than hear a hundred times”. So let's start right away with a photo:

Above we wrote that one of the disadvantages of typical laser printers is a rather large height, while at the same time it is necessary to provide access to the top cover - there is a receiving tray for printed sheets and, as a rule, control buttons. You can forget about it with the ML-1630: not only is the printer only about 12 cm high, but also its top cover is perfectly smooth.

However, "perfectly smooth" can be said about the entire printer as a whole: its body is made of glossy black plastic. The advantage of this solution is the appearance, but the disadvantage is the excellent visibility of any scratches, dust and fingerprints.

The paper tray is located at the bottom of the front panel, it opens when you press the round button located right there. The tray holds up to 100 sheets of paper (with a density of 80 gsm) - not much, but more than enough for home use. Please note that when closed, the tray is completely retracted into the body along with the paper - in contrast to compact printers of the classic design, in which the tray is folded forward during operation.

Printed sheets emerge from the gap between the two halves of the printer body. There is no output tray as such, but in case you need to print more than one or two pages, there is a plastic mini-tray that locks into the slot on the front of the printer in one motion. It is rated for up to 30 pages.

To service the printer, its top cover opens - for this, just press your fingers on the lock hidden in its front part and pull it up; in the open position, the lid locks itself, you do not need to hold it.

The cover opens access to the cartridge and part of the paper path - in case of a paper jam.

If the sheet gets stuck in the central part of the path, the printer will have to be disconnected from the network and turned towards you with the back wall. There is a decorative cap on it (it was removed in the photo above), which opens access to the tract. Thus, "chewing" the paper is not a significant problem in the ML-1630 - a jammed sheet can be reached literally in a matter of seconds. However, it should be noted that during operation - and the printer printed a total of about two hundred pages - it did not crease a single sheet.

There, on the back panel, there is a socket for a power cable and a USB port. Unfortunately, because of them, it will not work to move the printer close to the wall - the connectors are not recessed into the case, which means that at least 5 cm will have to be left between the printer and the wall for laying the wires.

Also, about 5 cm of free space should be left on both sides of the printer - they are equipped with ventilation grilles for cooling the printing mechanism. Cooling is active, but the fan turns on only when printing, the speed is low and as a result is almost inaudible.

The only printer control is the Job Cancel touch button located in the front right corner of the top cover. There is a power indicator next to it, despite the symbol drawn on it, it is not a button - you can turn off the power only with a toggle switch on the back of the printer. When you touch the Cancel button, the printer emits a short confirmation beep.

Above, in the photos of the printer with the tray extended, you may have seen a glowing blue arrow next to the word "Samsung" in the center of the front edge of the cover. This is an indicator of the current status of the printer, made in the form of a matrix of blue LEDs and several additional icons.

When the printer is turned on, while it is starting up and conducting self-diagnostics, the indicator shows an animated splash screen - the dimensions of the LED matrix are clearly visible from it. At the same time, the printer tries to play a simple melody on the built-in "buzzer" - to be honest, it is still far from polyphonic ringing, but it looks funny. The sound is low and not annoying.

Below the matrix there are four icons with various warnings, which light up in red - while a blue arrow is drawn on the main indicator pointing to the icon. So, above you see a message about the end of toner in a cartridge.

Three other red indicators mean a paper jam in the print path (for the above reason, we could not show it to you in operation), the end of paper in the input tray, and other errors. In the latter case, instead of a blue arrow, an explanation is displayed on the LED matrix: for example, in the photo above, the inscription "OPEN" is scrolled on it (the top cover of the printer is open).

The indicator does not remain inactive during normal operation: it displays a counter of printed pages. For each new print job, it is reset to zero - and this is very convenient, since by printing several dozen pages, you can at a glance determine how long you have to wait.

As a result, Samsung developers killed several birds with one stone: this way of presenting information about the status of the printer is an order of magnitude more convenient and informative than one or two status LEDs of conventional inexpensive printers, large blue numbers and bright red icons are perfectly visible from afar and in the semi-darkness, which is not you can always say about small LCD screens of "advanced" office printers ... And, finally, it just looks very beautiful and unusual.

The printer uses a specially designed cartridge model (which includes both a drum and a toner bottle) - ML-D1630A.

There are absolutely no problems with installing the cartridge: just lift the top cover of the printer and, with a little effort, insert the cartridge into place along the guides.

The resource of the cartridge is 2000 pages at 5% coverage (the so-called "test cartridge" with the resource of 1000 pages is supplied with the printer). Just in case, we remind our readers that such filling corresponds to a rather loose text - for example, a one-page business letter with a heading above the text and a signature under the text, where the actual content takes up half a page. Printout of solid text will, of course, have less cartridge yields in pages.

Software

The Samsung website provides drivers for the operating systems Microsoft Windows (from 2000 to Vista), Linux (without specifying kernel versions, printing subsystems, etc.) and MacOS X (versions 10.3 and 10.4). In our work, we checked only the first of them.

I was pleasantly pleased with the fact that both 32-bit and 64-bit systems are supported - and not only Vista, but also the not very popular Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition.

The driver was installed without any problems, after which the "SSManager" icon appeared in the system tray, through which you can call the printer status window or its settings panel.

In addition to the current status of the printer, the status window shows the level of toner in the cartridge (most likely, it is calculated based on the number of sheets printed). The "Buy Now" button, located right there, will take you to the Samsung site with information about the type of cartridge and the stores that cooperate with Samsung, the remaining two buttons open the troubleshooting guide and the driver settings panel.

The settings are quite standard: you can choose the print resolution, turn on the toner saving mode and make the image a little lighter or slightly darker.

It is also possible to automatically print posters that span multiple sheets of paper.

In general, only one thing can be said about the printer driver: it works. We have not encountered any problems with the software during the entire period of using the printer.

Test results

The printer was tested on a computer with the following configuration:

aMD Athlon 64 3800+ processor (2.4 GHz);
biostar motherboard as part of iDeq 330N barebone kit (Nvidia NForce 6100 chipset);
1 GB DDR PC3200 memory;
hard drive Samsung T166S HD321KJ (320 GB);
OS Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition.

Test templates were prepared in PDF format and printed from Adobe Reader 8.0, font rendering tests from Microsoft Office 2003 SP3. The results were scanned on a Canon CanoScan 8800F scanner, the scanning resolution was selected depending on the test so that the scanner did not introduce additional artifacts visible to the eye into the image.

Connecting the printer and installing the driver went smoothly. We used driver version 3.04.32, the latest one available at the time of testing on the Samsung website.

It took 14 seconds from the time the job was sent to the end of the first page - one second less than the printer manufacturer promises. Further, on a test job of about 30 pages of text, the printer showed a print speed of 16 ppm (excluding the aforementioned 14-second warm-up), which exactly coincides with its passport data.

Samsung promises quiet operation of the printer, and does not deceive - the ML-1630 emits a fairly moderate level of hum when printing, unobtrusive and does not interfere even when working in a small room.

600 dpi

The print quality of the Times New Roman and Arial fonts at 600 dpi did not cause any complaints: even the 2 pt font. displayed quite well. Small steps are noticeable on the letters, but in reality it is almost impossible to make out them without a good magnifying glass.

1200 dpi

Switching to 1200dpi made the fonts a little thinner, and there were no problems with their display in this case.

600 dpi, save toner

Surprisingly, the toner save mode had about the same effect: the fonts became thinner, but even at 2 pt. imprinted quite confidently.

The following test is designed to determine the printer's resolution and how well its driver handles vector images that exceed this capability.

The first part of the test is shading, the density of lines in which increases from left to right. The picture you see above is a combination of the two - when the printer is set to 600 and 1200 dpi. Amazingly, they are no different! In both cases, the printer confidently fulfills resolutions up to about 700 dpi, after which the lines begin to run unevenly - sometimes less often, sometimes more often. The result is not at all different on horizontal shading: apparently, the words "effective resolution" in the printer description are given for a reason, and it does not support 1200 dpi in hardware.

On the world (a circle with converging lines - accordingly, their density increases from the periphery to the center of the circle), the printer showed a generally good result, but closer to its center it produced a series of artifacts in the form of white streaks. This is a consequence of incorrect rasterization of vector graphics, in which the line density is much higher than the printer's capabilities; ideally it should just fill this area with solid black.

To compare 600 and 1200 dpi, we printed the two worlds in different settings, scanned them and stacked them back to back. As you can see, the picture is completely identical - the quality of displaying vector graphics in the printer does not depend at all on the resolution set in the driver.

As a final test for resolution, we printed a solid gray field in three modes and scanned them at high resolution - so that individual dots of toner were visible (it is obvious that any black and white printer can actually print only black, and shades emulates gray, making gaps between black dots).

It is clearly seen that the shape of the toner dots in all three modes is slightly different - thus, one cannot say that the "1200 dpi" mode is a complete fiction. It slightly affects the way the gray color is drawn and the display of fonts, but it does not change the rendering quality of vector graphics at all - the latter is rasterized at 600 dpi anyway.

However, this should not be attributed to the shortcomings of the printer - as we saw above, at the default resolution of 600 dpi it copes with its tasks.

And finally, the last test - printing photos on A4 size. Of course, hardly anyone will use a black-and-white laser printer for these purposes, but the test allows you to assess the quality of graphics printing in general - which means, to understand how suitable the printer is for printing documents with pictures, diagrams and so on embedded in them.

Two photographs were selected as samples - with a wide light gray background and a high-contrast image against a dark background - taken on a Canon EOS-350D camera with a Tamron AF28-75 / 2.8 XR Di LD lens. Photographs in JPEG format with a resolution of 3456x2304 pixels were printed from XnView 1.91 on a full A4 sheet size.

On a light gray background, you can see both the printer raster and uneven stripes running across the sheet - however, it should be noted that they do not spoil the overall impression of the photo, but in general, the printer coped perfectly with drawing small details, halftones and transitions between colors, at least by the standards of black and white lasers.

The printer also coped with the second photo - notice how neatly the rays of the sun and the shining drops of water from the fountain are drawn. Although transverse stripes are again visible against the dark background of the sky, they do not spoil the overall impression.

So, what conclusions can be drawn about the print quality of a printer?

Advantages:

print speed corresponds to the one declared by the manufacturer;
accurate rendering of fonts up to 2 pt;
accurate rendering of vector images with a resolution up to 700 dpi;
very good (by the standards of laser printers) transfer of details and halftones in photographs.

Disadvantages:

small flaws in drawing high-resolution vector images;
1200 dpi mode does not affect the rendering of vector images;
on uniform gray fills, stripes are visible across the sheet.

Conclusion

In general, the Samsung ML-1630 printer is definitely a success. This model is unlikely to be suitable for a large office because of the small capacity of the paper tray, not too large cartridge resource and modest in modern terms, print speed, but if you choose a printer for home use or "on the executive's desk" - on ML- 1630 is worth paying close attention to.

The main feature of the new printer is a unique compact design - it is very easy to place the printer on a table, bedside table, wide shelf, while its height is only one and a half dozen centimeters. Moreover, if the printer is on the table, in the conditions of a lack of space, nothing prevents, say, any foreign papers from being folded on its top cover. The paper tray retracts completely inside the printer and does not interfere with its operation, and the printed sheet tray may not be installed at all - if you do not need to print more than two or three pages at a time.

At the same time, the printer is also very beautiful: austere shape, lacquered black body, large and clear LED indicator of the current status - this model immediately attracts attention.

At the same time, the ML-1630 is inferior to the "classic" compact laser printers only in the capacity of the paper tray and printing speed - but let me tell you, how often do you need to print more than a few pages at home? ..

Of course, this printer cannot be called cheap - while similar in characteristics "classic" models cost in the range of 3-4 thousand rubles, at the time of writing the article ML-1630 was sold in Moscow retail at a price of about 5800 rubles, and a spare cartridge for it - at a price of about 1800 rubles. However, in our opinion, if you choose a printer for your home, based not only on the technical characteristics, but also on the ability to organically fit into the interior, the ML-1630 is worth it. Moreover, he has no competitors yet.

P.S. By the way, simultaneously with the ML-1630, Samsung has released an MFP of a similar design - the SCX-4500 model, which includes a color scanner with an optical resolution of 600x2400 dpi.
