Lg g3 front camera. Review and testing of the flagship smartphone LG G3. Main features of LG G3

LG G3 is the new flagship of the manufacturer and the first global smartphone with a QHD screen. Following global trends, the smartphone received a larger diagonal display, a new hardware platform, an updated interface, a camera with ultra-fast focusing and optical stabilization, as well as proprietary features in the form of a key block on the back of the case, an unusual plastic texture and the function of unlocking the Knock Code screen. The smartphone will appear on store shelves next week at a price of 7999 UAH, and while sales have not begun, we invite our readers to read the review of the new product and understand how it meets your expectations, as well as find out what its pros and cons.

Equipment

The smartphone comes in a small cardboard box. Without undue modesty, the manufacturer points out the awards received by the smartphone from international associations, which appreciated the design of the LG G3.

The back side contains the main technical characteristics of the device.

The color of the reviewed smartphone is called Titan. Inside the package, we found a 1.8A mains charger, USB cable, 3000 mAh battery and instructions. Let us remind you that LG has not supplied its devices with headsets for several years.

Design and ergonomics

Contrary to common sense, the performance race now affects not only the hardware platform, the number of megapixels, but also the screen diagonal. LG's flagship is no exception. The new product received a 5.46-inch screen with a QHD resolution (2560x1440 pixels). After the LG G2, the LG G3 looks and feels bigger as expected. It would seem some millimeters, but the sensations are completely different. When you pick up the G2 after G3, the latter seems tiny. Nevertheless, the ergonomics of the G3 are thought out down to the last detail. The back side is rounded as it approaches the sides, which makes the body more streamlined and comfortable. In addition, the width of the case is still within the permissible range, allowing you to operate the smartphone with one hand. For example, you can dial a phone number or a text message without intercepting the body. To get an idea of the dimensions of the novelty, we suggest taking a look at the comparison table.

As you can see, LG G3 has the most compact body, even against the background o, which at one time was also one of the most compact devices in this form factor. The manufacturer managed not only to reduce the dimensions as much as possible, but also to keep the weight in the symbolic "up to 150 g". Certain associations also arise with him. When you pick it up, it seems like there is no battery in it. With the LG G3, there are no such sensations, although the difference between the devices is insignificant 2 g.

Another global trend is the use of special plastic and / or pattern / texture as a material for the back of the case. At LG, it all started with iridescent patterns, and came to imitation of metal. It should be noted that the brushed aluminum texture does not spoil the impression of the G3 at all, rather the opposite. First, it makes the case not as glossy as the. Secondly, plastic is much more practical - it is flexible and more resistant to mechanical damage. Thirdly, it has a lower thermal conductivity, which is why the case does not feel as hot under load as in the case of metal.

After all the above, let's move on to the description of the control elements of the smartphone. The front part is protected by tempered glass. To the left of the speaker grid are proximity and lighting sensors, a 2 megapixel camera and an event indicator. Under the screen, you can see the manufacturer's embossed logo, applied to textured plastic with centric circles. The side frame rises slightly above the glass. To give the case a streamlined shape, the bezel narrows as it approaches the glass.

The front and back sides are separated by a plastic frame slightly lighter than the rest of the body. On the sides, its thickness is minimal, while on the ends it increases. It is on it that there are slots for connectors and holes. Among those on the upper end there is an IR transmitter eye and a microphone, at the bottom there is a Micro-USB connector, a headphone jack and the main microphone.

We have already talked about the design and the material from which the back of the case is made. Now let's talk about what is located on it. In the center there is another manufacturer's logo, at the bottom you can see the speaker hole, and at the top - the Rear Keys, camera lens, IR autofocus illumination and dual flash. The lens has a polarizing filter, which is clearly visible when viewed from an angle, when it takes on a purple tint from transparent.

The LG G3 smartphone has a collapsible body, which has not been in the manufacturer's flagships since the times. Under the removable cover are slots for memory cards and SIM, as well as a battery. On the inside of the cover there is an NFC antenna and an induction coil for Qi wireless charging.

The build quality is high. The body does not creak or twist, even with significant force. The impression of a monolithic design is created, which is in the hands of a smartphone, because the novelty is not cheap.

Operating system and shell

The smartphone runs on the operating system familiar from other LG models with an updated proprietary shell. It seems that the name of the new shell has not yet been invented.

The graphical interface was almost completely redesigned, which was not least due to another global trend - the fashion for everything flat, done in calm colors. To understand what is at stake, we suggest watching the video.

On the one hand, it may seem that the changes in the new shell affected only the design of graphic elements, but in reality this is not the case, the changes are deeper and in order to notice them, you need to compare with LG G2.

The new GUI (Graphic User Interface) has changed the screen unlocking effects, background screensavers, redrawn switches in the notification panel, changed the settings menu, added several new items, simplified the viewfinder interface and much more. Assessing the changes in general, one cannot fail to notice a positive trend in moving away from catchy and "heavy" graphic elements towards more calm and light ones. Unfortunately, this did not make the shell lighter in terms of the amount of RAM it took up and in terms of the smoothness of the animation. Quite often, when flipping through the desktop windows, you can notice slowdowns. Apparently, this is due to insufficient optimization on the part of programmers, which, in theory, should be eliminated with the release of software updates.

Hardware platform

The smartphone is based on the actual (at the time of entering the market) hardware platform of the Qualcomm family - MSM8974AC. Manufactured using a 28nm process technology, the single-chip system contains four Krait 400 cores operating at a clock speed of 300 MHz to 2.46 GHz, and an Adreno 330 graphics core operating at a frequency of 578 MHz. The smartphone in question (LG D855) supports the following frequencies: four bands of GSM and WCDMA frequencies, as well as LTE networks 700/800/900/1800/2100/2300 and 2600 MHz. In addition, our model received 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of permanent memory. There is one more configuration with 3 GB of RAM and 32 ROM. Both have a slot for microSD memory cards (the maximum storage capacity is 128 GB).

LG does not yet have specific plans to sell the second version of the smartphone in Ukraine, but as practice shows (for example, LG G2, which first appeared with 16 GB of storage, and later the 32 GB version became available), this will almost certainly happen a few months after start of sales of the current version. By the way, sales will begin in a week, which is a month earlier than expected.

The performance of the Snapdragon 801 is higher than the Snapdragon 800 only due to the higher clock speed of the processor and graphics cores, so one could expect a slight increase in synthetic tests. In fact, everything turned out differently, and this is due to the almost twice higher screen resolution of the LG G3 than, for example, the same or LG G2. Should I be upset about this? For sure if you are a geek chasing performance in benchmarks. For those who do not pay attention to them or do not know at all what they are for, you can live in peace - a smartphone without a hitch copes with any task, be it a game or high quality video. We have not yet had the opportunity to check the performance differences between the 2 GB and 3 GB versions, but according to the available information, it should be enough for the first of the mentioned categories of potential buyers of G3 - geeks, the difference is about 10%, which can be considered a very significant difference ...

With video playback, everything is as usual for LG smartphones, that is, all test files are supported, including AC3 sound. The player does not play DTS tracks, for this you have to use a third-party player. The file system allows you to upload videos larger than 4 GB. In the new shell, a separate application for viewing videos has been removed, now the "Gallery" is used for this, in which you need to select the appropriate tab. When viewing, you can adjust the brightness, turn on subtitles, select an audio track, and play speed. You can watch the video both from your smartphone and the TV screen. For this, the G3 was endowed with SlimPort and DLNA support. The sound volume is high, although at maximum there is no discomfort or desire to lower it. The quality should satisfy most users.

The music player remains unchanged. In it, you can still play the entire library or select by genre, album, folder. In the settings there are several preset equalizers and the possibility of manual settings. In addition, you can set the tonality and playback speed. The player plays FLAC files. The sound volume is the same as when watching a video, that is, it is sufficient even for such noisy places as the subway. The sound quality is excellent.

The volume of the spoken speaker is sufficient for communication in noisy places. In the settings, you can enable voice enhancement (intelligibility) (relevant for noisy places). You cannot record the conversation. There were no complaints about the transmission of speech in both directions. The volume of the multimedia speaker is also high, the declared power of the speaker is 1 W in normal mode and 1.5 W with a temporary increase in volume, for example, a ringtone in a noisy environment.

The search speed for GPS satellites is high, the speed of data exchange in the Wi-Fi network is close to the maximum possible. The Wi-Fi signal reception quality is good and does not depend on whether you hold the device horizontally or vertically. Note that the LG G3 is the first device with a removable lid to support Qi-standard wireless charging out of the box, and the presence of such a feature did not in any way affect the model's dimensions, except that the weight could be one or two grams less.

One of the main questions that worried the author of these lines when meeting with the LG G3 concerned its autonomy. For people who are actively interested in the world of smartphones and changing devices with the release of another interesting novelty, it is no secret that a 3000 mAh battery for a device with a 5.5-inch screen may not be enough. It's not enough to not worry about your pet asking for exercises during the day. The LG G2, LG Optimus G Pro and some models from other manufacturers have taught us good things. Curious users expected to see a 3200-3500 mAh battery in the G3, but it turned out that it will be content with the same capacity as its predecessor. But the screen, therefore, and power consumption have increased. LG is talking about a new battery technology that makes it more energy efficient than other devices, but we know very well that you can not believe all the words, sometimes until you check it yourself, you will not believe it. So it happened with the LG G3. In the conditions typical for the author of the operation, it suffices by 10-20% less than the LG G2. However, there has never been a case when the smartphone would have to be charged before the end of the day, let alone a working day. That is, users can count on one day of work with relatively active use, which includes work in 3G and Wi-Fi networks, synchronization of two Google accounts, GPS for the LG Health application, automatic brightness at 75%, reading news from social networks, etc. Unlike other manufacturers, LG stubbornly ignores the ability to optimize system performance by reducing the processor clock speed and other parameters that affect power consumption. It is quite possible that in the presence of such modes, it would be possible to increase the operating time by 10-20%.

In test applications, the LG G3 showed good results for a flagship. In Antutu Tester 396 points (on ART) and 400 points on Dalvik. In GFXBench, the results are slightly lower, 140 minutes of work (ART). In two-hour tests, the battery life is below average, for example, the same Lenovo Vibe Z demonstrates 50% to 90% higher rates.
To exclude an error, instead of the standard two hours of music playback, we made the smartphone "play" for 10 hours. During this period of time, the battery lost 17% of its charge. There is a dash in the "Navigation" column. The reason for this was constant application crashes after 45-50 minutes of work. Interestingly, during the test, the smartphone did not overheat and worked in exactly the same mode as the other test devices. Alas, he never once could pass it. Charging from 4% to 94% with the included adapter takes two hours.

Display

The LG G3 smartphone became the first global device to receive a 5.46-inch screen with a 2560x1440 resolution (538 PPI). At a time when there are still many devices with HD screens on the market, LG is starting to promote QHD screens to the general public. The matrix used is made using IPS technology. There is no air gap between the screen and the touch glass, which makes the image brighter and wider viewing angles. Unlike the LG G2, the screen does not turn yellow / blue when viewed from corners. Apparently, a different polarizing filter is used.

The smartphone cannot boast of the presence of separate settings that increase the sensitivity of the sensor, but it doesn't need it anyway, since such an opportunity is implemented in it from the very beginning.

The brightness of the screen ranges from 8.3 cd / m² to 373.6 cd / m². The maximum value could be higher, but this does not mean that it is not enough for comfortable work on a bright sunny day. For example, the same value in smartphones, Lenovo Vibe Z, LG G Pro 2, the next 401 cd / m², 385.2 cd / m², 301 cd / m², 368.3 cd / m², 318 cd / m². To be fair, it should be noted that there are many smartphones on the market with a brightness of about 500 cd / m² and higher, which, of course, is better than the maximum value of the G3. As for the minimum brightness, here LG G3 looks quite worthy, if we compare it with the already listed smartphones, this value will look like this - 10 cd / m², 12.7 cd / m², 10.6 cd / m², 6.9 cd / m², 29 cd / m². In view of this, it is incorrect to say that LG G3 has too high minimum brightness or too low maximum brightness, if only because most other devices cannot boast of such indicators. But what the G3 screen is clearly not a favorite is in the contrast level, only 1: 603, which is very small, as for a modern device, but quite typical for IPS-matrices.

When it comes to factory calibration, the G3 is by far the best of all the manufacturer's devices that we have tested. Almost all LG smartphones have an overestimated color temperature, while in the G3 it is even slightly below normal. The deviations from the primary colors are within the limits that monitors do not always fit into, and only the gamma curve indicates that bright shades are overexposed, while dark shades, on the contrary, are not sufficiently contrasting, which, however, only confirms what has already been said.

Based on the above, the display of the LG G3 could be rated at a solid 5, if not for one thing - overestimated sharpness, which leads to noticeable artifacts in small print. This feature can be noticed only if you specifically peer into the letters, however, it is not entirely clear why a screen with such a density of pixels per inch needs additional sharpness. It is hoped that in the next updates this "feature" of the screen will be corrected.

Cameras

According to the information we have, the LG G3 has two Sony matrices. The main module is similar to that used in the LG G2 - 13 megapixel, with SEKONIX lenses and f / 2.4 aperture. Sony IMX208 front camera module with 2.1 megapixel resolution and f / 2.4 aperture. The physical size of the dies is 1 / 3.06 "and 1/6", respectively. The main camera is supplemented by the OIS + optical stabilization system, the main difference from the previous OIS (LG G2, LG Optimus G Pro) is reduced to work in two planes, horizontal and vertical. In addition, LG G3 is the first smartphone with an IR module used for focusing, which is especially important in low light conditions, with which LG smartphones have always had problems.

All in all, the presence of an infrared focusing transmitter makes the G3 much more enjoyable than the G2. The camera focuses instantly and never misses, which is also important. The maximum resolution of the recorded video is 3840x2160 pixels (4K video) at 30 frames / s, in addition, the smartphone can record video in HD resolution at 120 frames / s.

If we talk about the quality of photos, then any noticeable leap in quality is not noticed, just the weak points of the G2 have become less noticeable. As for the video, everything is unchanged here, the picture is more or less pleasant, but the sound completely spoils all the impressions. It's funny that when announcing the manufacturer even emphasizes that the smartphone is able to record and reproduce sound comparable to what a person hears, in fact, everything turns out to be far from so rosy. Again, perhaps, as was the case with the LG Nexus 5, the manufacturer will fix the sound problem in the update, but this is not worth hoping for, because the LG G2 still suffers from this childhood disease.

Outcome

LG's new flagship is a very interesting device. It has an excellent 5.5-inch high-resolution screen, a good 13MP camera with fast focusing, a redesigned interface in line with market trends, quality headphone sound and a loud multimedia speaker. It also has a place for a removable battery and a slot for memory cards, a pedometer, a high-quality case and a very modest price for a flagship. But, as always happens, there were some minor flaws. Among these are the features of the screen and sound when recording video, as well as somewhat ambiguous results of autonomy. All these roughnesses can be eliminated with the release of the next firmware update, but even if this does not happen, this is unlikely to be the reason why you refuse to buy the LG G3, because its advantages more than cover the listed disadvantages.

Detailed testing of the new flagship of the Korean company

LG has once again updated its flagship smartphone from the top-end G series. The company's new flagship was presented after all competitors had launched their flagship solutions for the coming season. By this time, we had already managed to get acquainted with the Samsung Galaxy S5, and with the Sony Xperia Z2, and even with the new incarnation of the HTC One, which received the serial index M8. All these top-end novelties are united by the fact that they run on the latest version of the Qualcomm hardware platform - Snapdragon 801, which is currently the most powerful and advanced mobile devices on the world market. Each of the top novelties this season has some unusual feature, be it a fingerprint scanner, blood pressure meter or something else; there was something unique about the LG G3. First of all, the new LG flagship boasts an unusual screen resolution: Quad HD is still a unique solution for smartphone screens. True, it is difficult to assert with complete certainty that such a resolution is a real necessity for a mass user, however, such an unusual characteristic certainly attracts attention. The new flagship smartphone of the Koreans also has other differences - both unique (for example, the presence of laser focusing) and those found in previous models of the series, but in this case, they have undergone significant processing. In general, the changes are enough to investigate the new product in the most detailed way, which we will do today.

Contents of delivery

The LG G3 smartphone arrived at our editorial office in a catchy and large enough box made of solid cardboard with a golden lacquered lid. The box looks quite stylish, contains a minimum of necessary information on its surfaces, everything inside is also neat and thoughtful, which cannot be said about the configuration itself.

Unlike its eternal rival, LG firmly decided to adhere to minimalism, which is why all its flagship smartphones are equipped with only the most minimal set of accessories. This has gone back to the days of the first LG Optimus G, which, to everyone's surprise, did not include headphones, and everyone got used to it by the release of the third flagship. Unfortunately, the equipment of the next top-end novelty of the Koreans is also extremely ascetic, which does not at all fit with the enormous cost at which the company's new flagship smartphone is offered in retail. For 30 thousand rubles one could please buyers with some additional "goodies", especially since the new LG device supports wireless charging. However, there is nothing like this in the kit, there was only a charger (output current 1.8 A) and a Micro-USB connection cable.

It is worth mentioning an additional accessory made in the form of a book case with a round window through which information from the smartphone screen is displayed in a special mode. For this shape of the window, the cover even received the corresponding name QuickCircle. The accessory, of course, is sold separately, and differs from the familiar analog from Samsung in that here the back cover acts only as a nozzle for the main cover of the smartphone, while in the Samsung case the cover is installed instead of the main cover, completely replacing it on the device body.

Appearance and usability

The first thing to note: the new LG flagship, unfortunately, did not stay within the reasonable size, which, albeit with difficulty, corresponded to its predecessor. Unlike the LG G2, which was a large but still quite sleek pocket mobile device, the novelty crossed this invisible line, firmly taking its place among the "shovels". And the assurances of the company's representatives that with such a large screen the smartphone managed to keep the dimensions digestible for a human hand do not pass here. No, I couldn't. LG's new flagship is a real tablet phone, no matter how much the developers themselves would like to present the situation in a different way. The device turned out to be very large, although the narrowed edges and a small mass for such a huge size smoothen this impression to some extent. Still, it's a pity that the Koreans could not restrain themselves in this strange race - after all, their previous flagship came out as a device that was quite elegant in terms of dimensions, and nothing seemed to bode well for such an “explosive” further growth.

However, this question can only worry those who still see in a modern smartphone not a tablet, but a neat and miniature mobile assistant that fits in an average pocket. Those who have firmly decided to combine a smartphone and a tablet in one device will not find anything shocking here - after all, without exception, all top manufacturers in the new season have also significantly increased their flagship smartphones in size. When and at what point this race of gigantomania will stop, it is already completely incomprehensible, since the border of reasonable limits has long been overcome.

As for the design, it remains essentially the same as in the LG G2, only the materials have changed. More precisely, not even the materials themselves - after all, the body was, and remains, plastic. However, this time, the developers have managed to give the plastic such an appearance that it cannot be distinguished from real metal at first glance. The back cover has added texture to the look of a roughly sanded metal surface, and a wide shiny bezel that runs along the entire side perimeter resembles real steel. At least this is what the gray version of the smartphone looks like, which we tested. And yet there is no metal here, only high-tech plastic spraying.

Due to this peculiar coating, the device turned out to be completely non-staining, and since its front glass has excellent grease-repellent properties, the new flagship significantly surpassed its predecessor in this matter: LG G2, on the contrary, was a completely glossy and very easily soiled device.

The back cover is removable, which leads to the usual way of installing cards, and a replaceable type of battery. In this regard, the new LG flagship stands out favorably against the background of modern solutions, in which either the battery is sealed, or the SIM card needs to be removed with a paper clip, or the memory card slot is not found. The LG G3 has everything in order with this, everything looks the way it looked a few years ago in the vast majority of communicators: you can remove the cover, change the battery yourself, insert any memory card (up to 128 GB). Unless there is no slot for a second SIM-card, but this option is usually not found in flagships.

Both cards are located vertically one above the other, but unlike the SIM-card (Micro-SIM format), which is tightly supported by the rechargeable battery from below, the memory card can be easily removed and installed without removing the battery. On the opposite side, you can see a group of contacts connecting to contacts on the cover itself: the device supports wireless charging, a separate wireless charger has been released for it.

The back surface of the smartphone itself contains a block of buttons that has already become familiar for modern LG smartphones, and a dual flash and a laser rangefinder can be seen nearby. We will also talk about the laser installation for measuring the distance to the object of photography in the corresponding section, everything is clear with the flash, now many top devices are equipped with two multi-colored LEDs, but the button block has changed. We specially photographed it so that it became clear that none of the keys now sticks out of the body. Recall that in all previous models (with the "rear" arrangement of the button block), the lock key protruded significantly and could have been accidentally pressed, especially if the smartphone was lying on some kind of crumbling surface - even the protective bumpers did not save. So this unusual unit has undergone another improvement, this time everything has become almost perfect. However, the very option of placing the buttons on the back of the smartphone remains controversial, not everyone liked it, many could not get used to it, so the opinions of users on this matter remain directly opposite.

The purpose of the buttons remains the same and quite standard: the central key fulfills the inclusion and locking of the smartphone, and the other two, above and below, are responsible for adjusting the volume. The extended capabilities of the block of hardware buttons provide additional functionality in control: a long hold of the upper button launches the Qmemo application, the lower one calls the camera from sleep mode, and a long press of the central button activates the shooting of a photo or video.

There are no hardware buttons under the screen on the front panel, their role has long been played by virtual icons on the display - in some applications the strip with buttons can be removed, but in others it remains, taking up part of the working area of the screen. But it is possible to reorganize the number and order of buttons according to the user's taste.

In general, very little free space was left below the screen, and this is quite logical, since there are no hardware buttons there. Due to such narrow frames, the developers were able, as in the case of the previous flagship, to accommodate a larger screen than is usually the case for a case of this size with a traditional width.

Above the screen, the strip is also quite narrow, so that all the elements placed on it literally lined up in one line: the front camera peephole, sensors, an elongated earpiece grille, and here there is another useful element - an LED event indicator. The indicator dimly shines in various colors, notifying about the charging status and incoming events, its light is soft and unobtrusive. There is a separate subsection in the menu to adjust its tasks.

Both universal connectors - Micro-USB and an audio output for headphones (3.5 mm) - are located on one bottom end, between them you can see the main microphone hole. The distance between the elements is sufficient so as not to worry if both plugs are simultaneously plugged into their jacks. It is gratifying that Micro-USB here supports the mode of connecting external devices (OTG).

At the top, the space is discharged, there are only the eye of the infrared transmitter and the hole of the second microphone, which serves for noise reduction. The infrared port is, of course, primarily used to emulate the remote control - for this, the smartphone has a pre-installed program called Quick Remote.

There are no plugs on the connectors of the smartphone, since the device is not protected against water and dust. The LG G3 also lacks a strap mount. As for the color variety of the new flagship, this time the Koreans went even further and painted the case in several colors for literally every taste. In Russian translation, their names are as follows: metallic black, silky white, shining gold, moon purple, red burgundy.

Screen

The LG G3 smartphone is equipped with an IPS sensor matrix. The dimensions of the screen are 68 × 121 mm, the diagonal is 5.5 inches, the resolution is 2560 × 1440 pixels. The display has received an extremely high resolution for a smartphone, called Quad HD. Such a parameter as the density of pixels per inch is equal to 538 ppi here - an unprecedented figure for smartphone displays. The bezels around the screen are quite thin: the developers claim that the display occupies 76% of the front surface of the smartphone.

The brightness of the display can be adjusted manually, or you can use automatic adjustment. The multitouch technology here allows you to process up to 10 simultaneous touches. When you bring the smartphone to your ear, the screen is locked using a proximity sensor.

Alexey Kudryavtsev, editor of the “Monitors” and “Projectors and TV” sections, conducted a detailed examination using measuring instruments. Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are not worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the turned off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - LG G3, then they can be distinguished by their size):

The screen of the LG G3 is even slightly darker (brightness in the photos is 95 versus 102 for the Nexus 7). The doubling of reflected objects in the LG G3 screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS-type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass-air) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of strong ambient light, but their repair in the case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, noticeably better than that of the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much easier, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and displaying the white field in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 480 cd / m², the minimum - 10 cd / m². The maximum brightness is high, which means, given the good anti-glare properties of the screen, readability even on a sunny day outdoors should be at an excellent level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. There is an automatic brightness control by the light sensor (it is located to the left of the front speaker slot). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. This function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider. If it is 100%, then in complete darkness, the automatic brightness adjustment function reduces the brightness to 10 cd / m² (a bit dark, but you can read it), in an office illuminated with artificial light (about 400 lux) it sets to 250 cd / m² (normal), in a very bright environment (corresponds to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or slightly more) increases to a maximum of 480 cd / m² (which is necessary). The brightness slider is 50% - the values are as follows: 10, 140 and 480 cd / m², at 0% - 10, 50 and 480 cd / m² (the logic is traced). In general, the automatic brightness adjustment function works adequately. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker either.

This smartphone uses an IPS matrix. Micrographs (if you look closely) show the typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of photomicrographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift, even with large gaze deviations from the perpendicular to the screen and without tint inversion. For comparison, we present photographs in which the screens of LG G3 and Nexus 7 display the same images, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m2, and the color balance on the camera was forcibly switched to 6500 K. The white field is perpendicular to the screens:

Note the good uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field. And the test picture:

Color reproduction is good and colors are saturated on both screens. However, the saturation in the case of the LG G3 is clearly overestimated. As proof, we present a test photo with a smooth increase in saturation from bottom to top:

The lack of visibility of the horizontal stripes with maximum saturation can determine that on the LG G3 screen saturation is artificially increased (increased color contrast). In addition, in some of the images, it can be seen that the contour sharpness is also increased to some extent. Apparently, such image processing is performed programmatically at a very low level, since its result is visible in all tested programs that display raster images. Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens, but the contrast on the LG G3 screen dropped noticeably due to a significant increase in black levels and a decrease in image brightness. And a white box:

The brightness at the angle of the screens decreased (at least five times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of the LG G3, the brightness decreased a little more. When deviated diagonally, the black field is lightened strongly and acquires a violet or red-violet hue. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is the same for the screens!):

And from a different angle:

With a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field is imperfect, since in one corner the black brightness increases noticeably:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is not the highest - about 750: 1. The response time for the transition black-white-black is 13 ms (7 ms on + 6 ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes 23 ms in total. The gamma curve, plotted using 32 points at equal intervals in terms of the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal any blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.28, which is slightly higher than the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power dependence:

This smartphone has a non-switchable dynamic adjustment of the brightness of the backlight in accordance with the nature of the displayed image. However, it seems that the brightness decreases noticeably only when the black field is displayed in full or almost the entire screen, therefore, most likely, the obtained dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve) approximately corresponds to the gamma curve of a static image. However, just in case, we carried out a number of tests - determining the contrast and response time, comparing the black illumination at angles - when displaying special templates with a constant average brightness, and not single-color fields across the entire screen.

The color space is almost equal to sRGB

Note that a kink at the yellow dot indicates the presence of software image output processing. The spectra show that the matrix filters moderately mix the components together:

As a result, visually clear (see note above) colors have natural saturation. The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is slightly above 6500 K, and the deviation from the black body spectrum (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature and ΔE vary little from shade to shade - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of the color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there does not really matter, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

Let's summarize. The screen has a high maximum brightness and has good anti-glare properties, so the smartphone can be used outdoors without problems, even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is also permissible to use a mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works more or less adequately. The advantages of the screen include a very good oleophobic coating, no flicker and no air gap in the layers of the screen, sRGB color gamut and good color balance. The main disadvantage is the low stability of black to deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen. The presence of non-switchable dynamic adjustment of the brightness of the backlight in accordance with the nature of the displayed image and the artificial increase in saturation and edge clarity, we cannot add to the pluses, but the mass consumer may even like such an improvement in the picture. Therefore, taking into account the importance of characteristics for this particular class of devices, the screen quality can be considered high.

Sound

LG G3 sounds louder than its predecessor, this is achieved due to a powerful speaker (1 W) connected to an amplifier. True, there is only one speaker here, and it is turned in the direction opposite to the user. The sound is really very, very loud, it remains clear in the entire frequency range, but the presence of low frequencies in it is not too noticeable. The sound outlet is located on the back, so the sound of the smartphone lying with the screen facing up is muffled as the speaker grill is covered by the table surface. In the conversational dynamics, the voice of a familiar interlocutor, timbre and intonation remain recognizable, making telephone conversations with the help of LG G3 is quite comfortable. In the settings of the standard audio player, it is possible to influence the sound quality using the preset equalizer values.

Camera

LG G3 is equipped with two digital camera modules with a resolution of 13 and 2.1 megapixels. The front camera takes pictures with a resolution of 1920 × 1080, video shoots in a resolution of 1080p. For shooting self-portraits, the capabilities of the front camera are more than enough, examples of test shots are presented below.

The main rear 13-megapixel camera is equipped with advanced optical image stabilization (OIS +), but the most interesting thing is that the smartphone also has laser focus. Like professional DSLR cameras, the LG G3 uses this technology to measure the distance between the camera and the subject with a laser beam. It reportedly takes just 0.27 seconds to focus. When shooting in automatic mode, which is set by default, the photos are 4160 × 2240 (10 Mp), and at the maximum resolution the photo size is exactly the same 13 Mp: 4160 × 3120.

The camera control menu has been greatly simplified, although it cannot be said that the camera settings were poorly placed in previous LG smartphones. Previously, such a matrix of visual interactive squares was used, which, in general, was quite intuitive and easy to use. Nevertheless, in the new model everything has been simplified even more: now there are only two stripes with pictograms, which are drawn smaller and not so clearly distinguishable in the bright sun.

The camera can shoot video in 1080p and UHD (4K) resolution, and there is also the ability to shoot videos in slow motion, which is standard for top smartphones. Those interested can download examples:

 • Movie # 1 (73 MB, 3840 × 2160)
 • Movie # 2 (53 MB, 1920 × 1080)
 • Movie # 3 (39 MB, 1280 × 720, 120 frames per second)

Examples of photos with our comments are presented below.

Excellent sharpness on the car despite being in the shade.

In the distant shots, the foliage merges a little only in the shade.

The noise in the shadows is not very strong and is well handled.

The color of the sky is very even.

Even if there is sharping on the wires, it is invisible. The camera does not do much worse in the shadows than in the light.

The license plates of almost all cars in the picture are clearly visible. The foliage in the background is finely worked out.

In terms of the combination of many parameters, this picture is quite comparable in quality to a good compact camera.

The dynamic range is wide enough, and good light sensitivity allows you to competently work out shadows.

Another example of good sharpness on all shots.

In low light, you can notice the noise reduction, but it is very neat.

Text in daylight room and low light, as well as with flash. In all cases, the camera manages the text well, only in the corners the sharpness drops slightly.
Close-up shooting in daylight room and low light, as well as with flash. In all cases, the camera does a good job, perhaps a little worse in low light.

LG, having once learned how to create good cameras (in the LG G2), seems to have decided to slowly hone their skills. Since then, the cameras in her smartphones have turned out to be at least good, and sometimes even very good.

There is a feeling that LG, like the chief experimenter of Samsung, also likes to experiment, but it does so carefully and tries not to touch areas where everything is already fine. In the case of the G3 camera, it was also not without experiments, the main one of which seems to be an attempt to squeeze the maximum out of the 13-megapixel module - it’s interesting to see what it can do, and why go further if the resource has not yet been exhausted?

As a rule, a picture on a smartphone screen looks much sharper than on a regular monitor, and even more so on the LG G3 screen. But, oddly enough, the pictures of the G3 on the monitor do not look much worse and upon closer examination they do not cease to pleasantly surprise.

Foreground and middle shots can almost always be explored in detail. Even in the distant shots, the details do not merge, but are worked out very carefully. The optics are doing well. Sharpness is uniform across the entire field of the frame, and only slightly falls at the edges. The sensor is good at not the simplest moments, and the program helps it a lot. Sometimes, looking at the shadows, you can grimace, bumping into a not quite straight line, forgetting that this is a smartphone camera, and not a cool compact. The pictures are so good that the eye starts to notice these little things. In fact, the noise control works perfectly, although some points betray its work. Sharping is practically absent, which is good news and once again confirms the high quality of optics.

Illumination ≈3200 lux. The camera is doing well.

Illumination ≈1400 lux. The situation is not changing.

Lighting ≈130 lux. The situation is still good, although you can already see the traces of the noise control.

Illumination ≈130 lux, flash. The flash improves the situation a little.

Lighting<1 люкс. В темноте можно различить лишь контуры предметов.

Lighting<1 люкс, вспышка. В данном случае вспышка и шумодав сработали не очень слаженно, поэтому резкость упала, хотя она вполне могла остаться высокой.

Remembering the dependence of resolution on illumination for (unfortunately, we could not plot it on the graph, since it was measured using the old method), we can note that the maximum resolution value dropped slightly, but the value increased significantly in low light conditions. Due to this, the average value slightly increased, and the dependence acquired smoothness and stability, which is so valuable for a good camera: the more gentle decline is observed with the deterioration of lighting, the better the camera copes. Obtaining such stability consists in honing the existing achievements, which was mentioned above. The flash brings the camera a little, which does not allow reaching the original resolution and works the worse, the worse the lighting.

LG could not ignore the flagships of other manufacturers. Since the camera is good, these chips are more pleasant additions than the main trump cards.

The camera uses laser focusing, or rather, a laser autofocus assistant. The principle of its operation is allegedly the following: the smartphone calculates the distance to the object by the difference between the paths of the direct and reflected waves (laser beam), which either allows the camera to significantly narrow the focusing area, or not think at all and just set focus to the calculated distance. The question immediately arises: to which object is the distance calculated? After all, the main purpose of the sensor is fast focusing during fast shooting, on the assumption that the user "took out and photographed", and did not select the focus point on the display. However, it cannot be said that the benefits of this function are noticeable: even without lasers, current smartphones focus quickly enough. It is difficult to measure this, but if you recall Samsung's assurances that the Galaxy S5 camera focuses in 0.3 seconds without any lasers, then 0.27 seconds from LG does not look so impressive.

The second feature is the "Magic Focus" mode. In it, the camera takes five shots with focusing on different plans, after which you can select the desired plan and save the picture. Other shots in this shot will be slightly blurred. The function works a little oddly, as the focus does not always fall on the desired subject. If all this is done just for the sake of blurring the background, then it is not clear why the camera does not catch the desired object. If this is some semblance of the function "shoot now - focus later", then its implementation is far from ideal, because, again, out of five plans, you can not find a single one you need.

In any case, all these features are intended only to emphasize the main thing - the quality of the images. And since everything is good with the quality of the camera, then it doesn't need any chips. Either way, the LG G3 is a good fit for most shooting scenarios.

Telephone part and communications

The smartphone works as standard in modern 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA networks, and it also supports the fourth generation (LTE) networks used in Russia. With the SIM-card of the domestic operator Megafon, the smartphone in practice confidently finds and works with the LTE network. Additional network capabilities include support for the second Wi-Fi band (5 GHz) and NFC technology. The mode of connecting external devices (USB Host, OTG) is supported here, so any flash drives connected to the Micro-USB port, as well as mice with keyboards, are perfectly recognized. The navigation module supports both GPS and domestic Glonass and works very clearly and quickly. Spontaneous reboots / shutdowns during testing were not observed, as well as slowdowns or freezes of the system.

The screen is large, so the drawing of letters and numbers of virtual keyboards is quite comfortable to operate. The layout and location of the buttons are standard: here you can switch languages by pressing a special button, there is a dedicated top row with numbers - you don't have to switch the layout every time. The phone application supports Smart Dial, that is, when dialing a phone number, a search is immediately carried out by the first letters in contacts. It is possible to move the virtual keyboard closer to any of the edges of the screen for ease of typing with one hand. Naturally, there is also a variant of continuous writing by sliding your finger from letter to letter (Swype), here it is called Path input.

The company went even further and added more unusual options for customizing the virtual keyboard, up to changing the height of the buttons or even reassigning them yourself. The developers promise that the adaptive technology of the LG G3 keyboard remembers the typing features of a particular user and contributes to faster typing and fewer errors. The smart keyboard reduces errors by up to 75 percent by analyzing the accuracy of your fingers hitting letters. Key buttons can also be enlarged for even faster entry of frequently used characters and higher typing accuracy. It also became much easier to adjust the position of the cursor in already typed text by holding the space for a long time.

OS and software

The operating system is the version of the Google Android 4.4.2 KitKat software platform, on top of which is traditionally installed its own proprietary graphical user interface - the successor to Optimus UI. The updated interface has got minimalistic flat graphics, icons and icons do not have shadows, the interface looks unburdened with additional graphic effects, which makes it easier to perceive. In this regard, the changes are most noticeable in the example of the notification drop-down menu, which has become suspiciously reminiscent of the new Apple iOS graphics for the iPhone.

In general, the updated user interface of the LG G3 has incorporated all the many developments that have already been implemented in the previous versions of the proprietary shell. QSlide mode allows you to make working windows smaller, detach them by moving them around the screen, as well as change their transparency and number, and Dual Window splits the screen into two desktops for multitasking. QSlide can be activated from the notification menu, and the dual-window mode is enabled from the menu of the last launched programs - there is an additional second tab, called Double Window in Russian. The infrared port is supplemented with a special program for remote control of household appliances. The smartphone also has numerous gesture control capabilities.

Even more attention is paid this time to the issue of security. The smartphone offers a whole range of functions, such as the already well-known Knock Code and guest mode, and the Content Lock system has also appeared, which keeps personal data protected and hidden from prying eyes when sharing the LG G3 smartphone. When connected to a computer, Content Lock prevents viewing of protected files, thus keeping the data safe. Protected files can be located either on the G3's internal memory or on a microSD card. With the help of the Kill Switch function, it is possible to remotely lock the smartphone in case of theft. Kill Switch also allows you to remotely erase personal information stored on the LG G3. The program also includes scanning for viruses.

Performance

Like the latest flagships Samsung, HTC and Sony, the LG G3 hardware platform is based on the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC with four Krait 400 cores. Recall that the new platform has the functionality of the Snapdragon 800 with a slightly higher frequency of processor cores: Snapdragon The 801 can operate at frequencies up to 2.46 GHz, while the core frequency of the previous version of the chip was limited to 2.36 GHz. However, smartphones Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC One (M8) use not the most powerful modification of this platform (MSM8974AB), where the maximum frequency of processor cores is only 2.3 GHz. This is less than the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the hero of today's review, the LG G3 smartphone - these devices have the frequency of processor cores reaching a maximum value of 2.46 GHz. This is explained by the fact that it uses a more advanced version of Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974AC). Unlike the MSM8974AB version, the GPU frequency is also higher here: it is equal to 578 MHz (550 MHz for the MSM8974AB). Thus, of the four freshest new products presented on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 platform by top manufacturers, only Korean Samsung and LG devices operate on the maximum version of this platform - the other two, Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC One (M8), are equipped with a slightly less powerful version.

The processor is supported in graphics processing by the same Adreno 330 video accelerator. Less than 11 GB out of 16 GB are initially available for the user's needs. The amount of RAM of the smartphone is 2 GB, but in the future a modification with a larger amount of memory (3 GB of RAM and 32 built-in flash arrays) should go on sale. MicroSD memory cards in this model are supported up to 128 GB, you can also connect flash drives to the Micro-USB port using a special adapter in OTG mode.

To get an idea of the performance of the platform of the tested smartphone, we will conduct a standard set of tests (at this point, it should be noted right away that one of the most visual and close to real operating conditions benchmark MobileXPRT, our test subject, unfortunately, flatly refused to pass, no matter how many attempts we tried undertaken).

All the results obtained by us when testing the smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks, we summarized for convenience in tables. Several other devices from different segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions of benchmarks, therefore, many worthy and relevant models remain "behind the scenes" - due to the fact that they once passed the "obstacle course" on previous versions of test programs.

Testing in MobileXPRT, as well as in the latest versions of AnTuTu 4.x and GeekBench 3:

The test results showed that despite the extremely high screen resolution, which is certainly one of the most stressing factors on the system, the LG G3 smartphone nevertheless demonstrated almost the same performance as the rest of its colleagues, which operate at a lower resolution. displays. All four newest top-end smartphones are approximately equal in performance, the difference lies within the margin of error - especially when you consider that now we are talking about such high results that all other smartphones are simply inaccessible. So in any case, we are now talking about the LG G3 and other new products on the Snapdragon 801 as the most powerful smartphones, the hardware performance of which will be enough for a long time to perform any possible tasks.

When testing in 3DMark for the highest performing smartphones, it is now possible to run the application in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (which can cause the speed to rise above 60 fps).

The results of testing the graphics subsystem in the Epic Citadel gaming test, as well as Basemark X and Bonsai Benchmark:

Browser cross-platform tests:

As for benchmarks for evaluating the speed of the javascript engine, you should always make allowances for the fact that the results in them significantly depend on the browser in which they are launched, so that the comparison can be truly correct only on the same OS and browsers, and this possibility is available when testing not always. In the case of Android OS, we always try to use Google Chrome.

Video playback

To test the "omnivorous" video playback (including support for various codecs, containers and special features, such as subtitles), we used the most common formats, which make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that it is important for mobile devices to have support for hardware decoding of video clips at the chip level, since it is often impossible to process modern versions at the expense of processor cores alone. Also, do not expect a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it.

LG is once again pleasantly surprised by the full support of all necessary decoders in its smartphones. Unlike most of the reviewed devices from other companies, the capabilities of the built-in video player were enough for smooth playback of all our standard test clips. At the same time, there were no problems with sound either, and in a third-party MX player you don't even have to switch to hardware playback in the Hardware +... That is, in simple terms, the LG G3 will play any video downloaded from the network without any problems.

This smartphone has support for SlimPort (or Mobility DisplayPort) adapters, which connect to the Micro-USB connector and provide video (and sound) transmission to external display devices. For testing we used a monitor LG IPS237L ... When using this monitor and our existing SlimPort adapter, the output was carried out at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels at 60 fps. In landscape orientation of the smartphone, the display of the image on the screens of the smartphone and the monitor is carried out, if possible, in landscape orientation (with the exception of the start screen), while the image on the monitor is inscribed within the boundaries of the screen and is an interpolated copy of the smartphone screen.

In the portrait orientation of the smartphone, the image is displayed on the monitor screen in portrait orientation, while the image on the monitor is inscribed in height, and wide black fields are displayed on the left and right of the monitor screen.

Sound via HDMI is output (in this case, the sounds were heard through the headphones connected to the monitor, since there are no speakers in the monitor itself) and is of good quality. At the same time, multimedia sounds are not output through the loudspeaker of the smartphone itself, and the volume is controlled by buttons on the smartphone body. The smartphone connected to the SlimPort adapter is being charged, and the adapter must be connected to a power source via its existing Micro-USB connector.

The video output deserves a special description. To begin with, using a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see "Testing methods for video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)"), we checked how the video is displayed on the smartphone screen. Screenshots with a shutter speed of 1 s helped to determine the frame output of video files with various parameters: the resolution varied from 1280 by 720 (720p), 1920 by 1080 (1080p) and 3840 by 2160 (4K) pixels and frame rates of 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps. In this test we used the MX Player video player in the "Hardware +" mode. The results of this (block entitled "Smartphone Screen") and the following test are tabulated:

The marks indicate possible problems with the playback of the respective files.

According to the criterion for outputting frames, the quality of video playback on the screen of the smartphone itself is very high, since frames (or groups of frames) can be displayed with a more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. The smartphone can even display 4K files up to and including 30p. Based on the test shots, the refresh rate of the LG G3 when displaying full-screen video may change according to the video frame rate. However, uniform frame interleaving is a relatively unstable state, since some external and internal background processes lead to periodic failure of the correct interleaving of intervals between frames. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 (1080p) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly on the edge of the screen, however, on the test worlds it can be seen that the clarity is slightly reduced due to interpolation to the screen resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - all shades are displayed in shadows and highlights.

With a monitor connected via SlimPort, when a standard player is playing video, the video file is displayed only in landscape orientation, while only the video file is displayed on the monitor (the translucent navigation bar is removed after a few seconds), and only information elements and virtual controls are displayed on the smartphone screen:

When playing video files with a resolution of Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) on the monitor screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly along the edge of the screen, maintaining the true proportions, and the resolution corresponds to Full HD resolution. The brightness range displayed on the monitor is equal to the standard range of 16-235, that is, in the shadows and highlights, all shades are displayed. The results of the monitor output tests are shown in the table above in the "SlimPort (monitor output)" block. The output quality is very good.

It turns out that the connection to external monitors, TVs and projectors, carried out using the SlimPort adapter, can be used for games, watching movies (including in Full HD resolution), displaying web pages and other activities that benefit from multiple size increases screen.

Battery life

The lithium-polymer battery installed in the LG G3 turned out to be slightly smaller in volume than the Sony flagship, but the device is ahead of all other competitors in this matter. It is all the more necessary for him, since the smartphone has to deal with the highest screen resolution for today, and in terms of area, the LG G3 display is one of the largest. In principle, the developers promise that a specially developed new type of battery, in the cathode of which the metal is replaced by graphite, should fully compensate for the increased energy consumption due to the presence of a Quad HD screen - a separate division of the company, LG Chem, is responsible for the batteries.

However, all this has remained promises so far, and compared to its competitors, the new flagship of the Koreans still demonstrated a shorter battery life in the same comparative tests.

Continuous reading in the FBReader program (with a standard, light theme) at the minimum comfortable brightness level (the brightness was set to 100 cd / m2) lasted 9 hours until the battery was completely discharged, and with continuous viewing of YouTube videos in high quality (HQ) The device lasted 7 hours with the same brightness level through the home Wi-Fi network. In 3D games mode, the smartphone worked for less than three hours, after which it signaled the need to charge. By the way, under heavy loads, a rather strong heating of the rear wall of the case is observed. Perhaps, with the release of new firmware, the smartphone will be able to demonstrate better autonomy, but so far this is the state of affairs.

Outcome

As for the cost of new items in our market, the price has not yet been officially announced, but some large retail chains have already opened a pre-order for the LG G3 smartphone at a price of 30 thousand rubles. In principle, there are no revelations in this, we are already accustomed to the fact that top manufacturers play on the market according to the same rules, and all competitors put up their flagship solutions in the new season at this price.

As for the capabilities of the smartphone described today, only the most advanced models on the market, such as Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC One (M8), are the most powerful devices with top-end characteristics. Each of them has its own advantages over competitors, but there are also weaknesses. LG's flagship boasts, first of all, a screen with an unprecedented resolution (for ordinary smartphones), as well as a good camera with improved optical stabilization and laser focusing. A nice-looking and well-designed user interface can also be added to the assets of this model. The removable battery and support for memory cards are certainly commendable.

However, you can cite some disadvantages of the LG G3, albeit relative: lack of protection against water, weak autonomy, noticeably increased in size, and, moreover, a rather rough design body without any special frills, the presence of a single speaker, albeit loud, but still inferior in sound quality to HTC stereo speakers. Of course, we will not write down the lack of a fingerprint scanner and a blood pressure meter as a disadvantage, bearing in mind how poorly this element was organized by the flagship Samsung. Rather, it is a plus that the device is not overloaded with unnecessary elements that are needed just for show. But the aforementioned waterproofing of a modern smartphone would still not hurt ...

Nevertheless, the device turned out to be very interesting, quite worthy of its competitors, but it's a pity that LG, having confidently entered the number of manufacturers of smartphones of the first magnitude, stopped using such an important lever as a low price in promotion. Now, for the user, the choice between the described flagship devices is mainly determined by the emotional preference of a particular brand, because all the top new items not only came out quite worthy of each other, but are also sold at the same price. The company's previous flagship, LG G2, was initially offered at a better price than competing solutions, but now this gap has been completely leveled.

LG G2 - last year's flagship manufacturer has become a real boon for many. In it, the company managed to combine stylish design, advanced features and a comfortable shell, which, oddly enough, has not received any name. Of course, there were negative aspects, but they were so insignificant that you simply do not notice them. While reviewing the LG G3 32gb dual, we noticed that the new flagship has all the advantages of the previous model, but at the same time its capabilities have been greatly improved. The manufacturer managed to create an optimal device that can meet the needs of a wide variety of users. We recommend reading the LG G3 d724 review and specifications to find out about all the advantages and disadvantages of the new model.

We have the following scope of delivery: documentation, charger, microUSB-cable and the device itself.

LG G3 design

In our opinion, the design of the device turned out to be quite standard, it does not have any bright features that attract attention and delight. The only advantage is the metal-style back cover. Despite the banality of the design, the device lies perfectly in the hand. A smartphone cannot be called a freak, but it does not cause any emotions either. Quite a standard gadget, but its main advantages lie inside. During the review and specifications of the LG G3 d855, we drew attention to the variety of colors of the back cover. It can be made in matte black, silk white, pink, as well as golden and light purple. As you can see, rare and very bright shades have been chosen for the smartphone.

It is already customary for the manufacturer to use plastic to create flagship models, but the brand's specialists are trying to introduce at least some variety. To make the plastic in its appearance resemble metal, a special film with a metallizing structure is glued to its surface. You will not be able to accidentally tear it off, as it is fused into the plastic. LG G3 d 722 dual lte smartphone review showed that the film does not collect scratches and fingerprints due to its special structure. The lid really looks like a metal one, especially when you look at it from a certain angle.

Build quality LG G3

The manufacturer, unlike most competitors, has installed a removable cover and a battery, but despite this, there is no backlash. The build quality is really top notch. The block with three buttons for controlling the device is made perfectly, there are no complaints about it. Another positive side we would call the absence of a frame between the protective glass and the ends of the phone. Some flagship models have such a gap and collect a lot of dust.

Body dimensions

Contrary to all expectations, the bezels of the LG G3 are even thicker than in the previous model. The new model turned out to be larger in all respects: taller, wider and thicker. Although now this is not at all surprising, because recently manufacturers have begun to offer devices with a large display in their assortment, and therefore the parameters of the case are also increasing. The rather large dimensions of the device do not affect the comfort of its use. For this, the manufacturer offers interesting software solutions. As an example, you can customize the order of the keys on the bottom touchpad so you don't have to reach for frequently used keys.

Control elements

The main feature of the flagship can be considered the complete absence of keys on the front panel, as well as side ends. Three control buttons are installed on the back of the device in the camera area. Initially, the original arrangement of the keys causes inconvenience, but gradually you get used to it. Smartphone LG G3 specifications and price matched perfectly, thanks to which the manufacturer is rapidly increasing its position in the world market.

At the top there is an IrDA port, with which you can control home appliances. Nearby there was a place for an additional microphone.

At the bottom we found a microUSB connector, a headset jack and a main microphone.

The main camera, speaker and control keys are located on the back.

At the top of the front panel there is an earpiece, a light sensor, as well as proximity, an indicator of missed events and a 2.1 megapixel camera lens. The indicator light is capable of displaying several types of events: new messages, system notifications, missed calls and the need to connect to a charger.

Display

Display LG G3 has a diagonal of 5.5 inches. This is a popular format today, in which it is convenient to use the multimedia capabilities of the device. This is one of the first devices with a screen resolution of 2560x1440 pixels. Of course, it will be impossible to see the pixels on such a display. The benefits of the screen don't end there. It has an excellent margin of brightness, which is sufficient even when used in bright sunlight, the viewing angles are ideal.

The picture does not lose the saturation of the hue, even if you tilt the display diagonally. The auto-light works quite correctly, but sometimes it works to save energy. In this regard, the brightness level may not be observed as you wish to see. In our opinion, the screen turned out to be just perfect in all respects. On the one hand, it is bright and saturated, but on the other hand, it has a balanced color temperature, so that the eyes do not get tired of prolonged use of the gadget. The LG G3 has very good specs and makes it one of the best flagships of the company.

The display is protected by a protective Gorilla Glass 3 with an oleophobic coating. There are practically no prints left on the screen, but they are also deleted in an instant.

Cameras LG G3

The resolution of the main camera module is 13 megapixels. It is equipped with a two-axis optical stabilization system, laser focusing and flash. We were most interested in laser focusing, which works very quickly and accurately. The sensor works in the following way: in a minimum period of time, a large number of rays are sent to the focusing object. Once guided, they are reflected and fed back, after which the system calculates the time it takes for the beams to complete the route. Thus, high pointing accuracy is achieved. The LG G3 camera also has an additional contrast focusing system.

The camera interface looks like this:

The smartphone supports video recording in high quality, as close as possible to 4K (3840x2160 pixels). The next feature is the increased frame rate during shooting - up to 120 fps.

The interface is pretty basic, with one exception. There are two shooting modes - with and without display settings. In the first mode, the device automatically aims at the subject of shooting with each movement of the viewfinder, and shooting is carried out by pressing a key. Manual focus can be performed by tapping on an object in the display. There is also a mode without settings, in which shooting is possible by pressing any point on the display. The camera instantly focuses on the selected area and takes a good picture.

If you are a beginner, it is better to shoot in automatic mode. Then the device will automatically select the optimal parameters depending on the shooting conditions. Pictures in this mode are decent even in low light conditions.

Autonomy LG G3

LG G3 s d724 specifications provide for the use of a battery with a declared capacity of 3000 mAh. The capacity remains unchanged from the previous model, while the display is larger, as is its resolution. Fortunately, the autonomy remained at a decent level and is not inferior to its predecessor. With average use (several hours of music and surfing the Internet, a couple of hours of calls and text messages), the gadget lasts for a day. In emergencies, you can use the proprietary energy-saving mode, which can be activated when the charge level is less than 30%. When activated, the brightness is reduced and the indicator light, vibration, wireless connections are turned off and services are automatically synchronized.

Specifications LG G3

The technical characteristics of the LG G3 are very good, because the device is built on the best Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 platform at the time of release. It is a 4-core processor with a frequency of 2.5 GHz. The video accelerator Adreno 330 is responsible for the graphics in games. There are two versions of the model on sale - with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of built-in, as well as 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of built-in. If the built-in memory is not enough for you, then the possibility of installing a memory card is supported.

Performance, test result LG G3

The interface and apps work great, we didn't find any lags during our testing.

Test result in Antutu (X):

GeekBench 3:

Interface

As standard, the device is preinstalled with the Android 4.4.2 system with a proprietary shell from the manufacturer. With each new model, the shell becomes more comfortable and functional, but it never got its name, although it definitely deserves it. The shell looks amazing. It is thought out to the smallest detail, and its main advantage is the simplicity of colors and shapes. The interface contains icons without unnecessary details, made in a minimalist style, which is combined with a calm color scheme. If the interface lacked integrity in G2, then everything is fine. The interface is made in the same style, which pleases the eye.

Sound LG G3

The earpiece speaker is simply gorgeous. During a conversation, you can clearly hear the interlocutor, as well as you. The speaker volume is sufficient with a large margin, although there is only one. The volume of the spoken and multimedia loudspeaker is sufficient for comfortable use of the device even in noisy rooms and outdoors.

Output

On the Aliexpress website LG G3 with 16 GB of internal memory 2 GB of RAM can be purchased at a price of 9,000 rubles. You can also order a more advanced version if you plan to use the device to its fullest. For this price, it will be difficult to find a more worthy option. The manufacturer has equipped the device with a high-quality display with a high resolution, good cameras, a user-friendly interface and a powerful filling.

Your rating for a smartphone:

I can call myself so old that I remember when LG was doing very mediocre in terms of smartphones, but now everything is straight forward and promising. And this did not happen overnight, it was preceded by many successful models. The fact is that even a manufacturer who makes very mediocre devices gets something useful from time to time. But more often than not, this is where it all ends. LG began to grow, it seems to me, with the Nexus 4. At that moment, many were skeptical about changing the manufacturer of the reference line of smartphones to Android, but it came out very good and it is still incredibly stylish.

After him were the successful L line and others. In general, the strategy was chosen correctly and today, after the start of sales of the new flagship smartphone G3, in some countries it is selling better than the strongest of this market. And all because LG is not trying to balance on the brink, releasing flagships, it seems, but not trying to do something unusual. LG wanted and made both the G2 and G3 unique in many ways. In this case, we got a 2K display (QHD), and LG was the first to release a smartphone with it among the A-brands. Who needs it - this is the second question. Also, the focusing system has changed significantly, the new product is not just software improvements, but an IR sensor that focuses almost instantly. Also, the G3 is one of the seemingly three smartphones on the market that can be purchased with 3 GB of RAM.

Design and ergonomics

I'll start with the case. He, like in the second generation, is plastic. I don't know why, but the manufacturer focuses on the fact that plastic here imitates metal. Several layers are applied on top of ordinary plastic, including the last one - ribbed. But, in fact, this is exactly plastic, and we see all kinds of imitations all the time, so I didn't quite understand why focus on such trifles. The only thing is that it was this plastic texture that made many people speculate whether the smartphone would be metal, after its first photos appeared on the Internet.

The case is now disassembled, although if you try, you can disassemble the G2 too. However, despite this, the assembly, it seems to me, has become even better. My G2 was monolithic and there were no complaints at all, however, many complained about creaks and backlash. This is not the case in the G3. I twisted the smartphone, squeezed it and tested it for rigidity and I can't say anything bad. Unlike Sony's monolithic Z2, the G3 doesn't flex with the same amount of effort. I am also glad that the plastic is not as glossy as in its predecessor and does not collect fingerprints as well. It is much more pleasant to hold in your hands.

LG is almost the only one to continue the trend of smaller bezels around the display. This year the SGS5 and HTC One M8 picked up something that some didn't like. In G3, the display area is 72% of the front side, which is a lot. There are practically no frames on the sides and it is striking. As before, this result was achieved by moving the volume control keys and locking the display from the sides to the back.

At the back, as in the G2, there is a volume rocker, inside which is a display lock button with an LED. Squeezing the lower one starts the camera from the locked state, the upper one - QuickMemo. I am glad that it is possible to reconfigure this key. Also on the back is a 13MP main camera, flash and IR sensor for fast focusing. At the bottom of the back cover there is a slot for the speaker, which sounds rather mediocre compared to the competition. Especially when compared with the Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC One of the first and second generations.

Under the back cover there is a battery, a slot for a memory card and a SIM card. By the way, the back cover of the G3 has a built-in Qi-standard wireless charging module, while the smartphone is quite thin - 8.8 mm.

By the way, yes, in the new generation, unlike the G2, you can replace the battery on the go, add memory if the built-in is not enough and replace the cover if it gets scratched. Practical.

On the front side there is a 5.5 ″ display, earpiece, front 2.1 MP camera and the manufacturer's logo below.

On the upper side there is an infrared port and a microphone for noise cancellation, on the bottom there are connectors for a headset and for a MicroUSB cable.

In the case, I was pleased with almost everything: the design is attractive, the assembly is of high quality, the infrared port for controlling the equipment has not gone anywhere, moreover, now you can insert a memory card. Unfortunately, the G3 didn’t come with a moisture protection like SGS5 and Z2, which would be very helpful.

Display

Compared to the G2, the display has grown from 5.2 ″ to 5.46 ″. In addition, the resolution has also increased - up to QHD (2560x1440). With such diagonal and resolution, the pixel density is an incredible 538 ppi. And now, attention, the question: "Why?" Not that I was old-fashioned or afraid of changes, but I don't see any reason to make a resolution higher than Full HD on such a diagonal. For tablets it is more than understandable, but in a smartphone, it seems to me, this is only a rise in price and an increase in energy consumption. At LG's presentation, they showed how pixels become distinguishable when a specific area of the screen is enlarged, but the human eye is not able to zoom a picture, and when viewing an image from the closest possible distance, pixels are not visible even at a density of 440 dpi. Well, lano, the main thing is that LG made such a display the first among the A-brands.

But for me, the main thing was different, how the display behaves at different angles. And, fortunately, it did not take over the problems of the G2 and Nexus 5 - the blacks became much richer, and the viewing angles were almost maximized. Excluding AMOLED-matrices, which have such a priori, only HTC One is better. That is, in all parameters that are clearly visible to the eye and affect the user experience, the G3's display has improved in quality. Speaking of brightness, it is not the highest among competitors, but there is enough to use the device even on a sunny day - the information is discernible. But the unpleasant moment - excessive software sharpness of the text, which is expressed in light contours around the fonts, it did not interfere with reading from the display, but it seems that something is wrong with the matrix. It is good that this effect is observed only in the text, perhaps it will be removed.

Camera

The matrix has not changed significantly, the resolution remains the same - 13 MP, and the size - 1 / 3.06 ”. Both the front and rear cameras are made by Sony. The aperture ratio of both is far from the best in the class - 2.4. And now for the good. To begin with, the optical stabilization module was improved and called OIS +. The image is now stabilized 20% better. I would not tell by sight that it is noticeable. But what is immediately noticeable is improved focusing. The stated focusing time is comparable to some other smartphones on the market - 0.267 sec. However, here this indicator corresponds to reality as much as possible, because focusing is carried out using an IR sensor located near the camera.

When you are in camera mode, you see every now and then how the focus points are triggered on various objects. It seems like it happens instantly. And to take a picture, you just need to touch the screen. But it is not so much the focusing speed that is important as its accuracy - the focus never misses.

The quality of the resulting images is very decent. I can't say which is the best, but it is practically on par with SGS5. And in low light, the G3 behaves even better, both with image quality and focus.

Sample photos

The video is recorded in a maximum resolution of 4K (3840x2160 pixels) with a frame rate of 30 per second. It is possible to record SloMo videos in HD resolution at 120 frames per second. Unfortunately, it seems that the latter mode does not work quite correctly, because the real resolution is lower, although 1280x720 pixels are displayed in the properties. I hope they will correct it.

Sample Videos

In general, I was satisfied with the camera. The only thing that will not please power users is that the camera interface has reduced all kinds of manual settings, now everything is as simple as possible. Just like the iPhone. Almost.

Specifications and software

If in G2 everything was in order in terms of hardware, and the software often failed, then in the new product everything was corrected. We slightly upgraded the hardware and heavily doped all the software. Many expected that the processor in the new product would be a new one - Snapdragon 805, however, there is installed, although also fresh, but the 801st c 330 Adreno. Why is that bad? Like nothing. In theory, it seemed that the processor would be strained in heavy games, such as MC4, because the display resolution is huge, but this did not happen. The interface is also fast, in general, there were no questions. The only thing is heating, it was not shared anywhere. The smartphone still often does not allow raising the display brightness to maximum due to overheating.

Outwardly, this is not so noticeable, but the smartphone knows better. RAM - 2 GB, if the smartphone has 16 GB of storage, and 3 GB, if it has 32. There is a slot for a Micro SD memory card.

The battery capacity is 3000 mAh. The autonomy in a smartphone is good, generally speaking, but in fact, there is no smartphone with good autonomy on the market. Or almost not, I have not seen such. The last few days I have been walking a lot and planning a route in Google Maps, not a single device, even iPad included, lives a day. However, if you use it as a phone: call, write messages and mail, sometimes re-read social media, take several photos / videos a day, and so on, it will last all day and by the evening there will be another 30 percent charge.

As I said, the software has been finalized. Almost the latest version of Android OS is installed here - 4.4.2, on top of which is the proprietary LG interface, which has become flatter. Its design has become much more pleasant, it is clear that at least the designer worked on it. Everything is designed in one style, there are no menus or standard applications that clearly stand out from the design. Moreover, there are certain concepts followed in all pre-installed apps. For example, they all have different color themes, this is done so that, after a while, the user is visually oriented in which application he is. Branded features such as Knock Code, LG Backup, Security Assistant and more have been preserved. But there were also new solutions. For example, the keyboard has smart predictions and is designed so that you don't have to take your thumbs off the input field. You can also change the height of the keyboard block. There are several new services, like Smart Notice, which will notify you about any events, like Google Now, there is LG Health, Smart Tips, which gives smart advice when using and more. There is only one downside to all this - jams still happen. For example, there are dialers in the application, sometimes with simple scrolling, and so on.

LG G3 is considered one of the most technologically advanced and versatile Android flagships today. The improved interface, stylish design and many new features allowed the phone to quickly gain popularity among customers.

Main features of LG G3

Smartphone LG G3 has many innovations, even compared to the previous LG G2... The official version has 16 gigabytes of internal memory and 2GB of RAM, runs on Android Kitkat OS and has a high-quality 13MP camera. The 3000 mAh battery withstands several days of talk time and active use of Wi-Fi.

Interesting features of the model are the ability to use a high-resolution Quad HD screen, as well as a camera with laser focusing function. For those who like to take selfies, the Rear Key function has appeared, which allows you to turn on the camera and take a picture with one button.

What are the main advantages of the LG G3?

 • ergonomics and lightness even with an increased screen diagonal;
 • improved image quality Quad HD;

A few words about the design of the LG G3

The developers did a great job on the appearance of the device. Thanks to the combination of polycarbonate and film, it creates a multi-layer corrugated coating that looks like a metal. But the case is very lightweight, comfortable, it does not heat up from heavy loads, unlike metal. Thus, the LG G3 has a stylish plastic body styled like metal, which does not affect performance.

The screen diagonal has increased compared to previous models, now it is 5.46 ”. But the phone is very ergonomic and fits comfortably in the hand. Today there are many varieties of LG G3 - LG G3 S, LG G3 S5, and each of them has its own flavor.

The price of LG G3 corresponds to the functionality and technical stuffing offered by the smartphone. The developers have tried to make the model maximally adapted to the needs of the modern user.

SUMMARY OF THE REVIEW

LG G3 has been voted the best model of 2014 on several occasions. The flagship has powerful features and an interesting design. No matter how ridiculous it may sound, its “older brother” LG G2 becomes the main competitor, which is not inferior to our hero in capabilities, but costs several times less. Even after trying, it is impossible to find differences in performance, software, and a slight increase in the diagonal is unlikely to be noticeable. The only difference is the more stylish design and the faster camera.
