Upgrade android 4.4 2 to 6.0. All about updating your phone to android. How to update Android with regular means

For the majority of Android device owners, the release of a new version of the OS is a long-awaited event. It makes no sense to part with your beloved old phone and buy a new, more functional one, if you can "refresh" it with a new firmware. Therefore, for such a category of users, it is important to know how to update Android on the phone quickly and correctly.

This issue becomes especially relevant in view of the release of the new Android 8.0, dubbed Oreo. Like previous versions, Oreo "reveals" a lot of possibilities for the owners of gadgets.

Features of the new OS based on Android 8.0

Even in previous versions, you could feel all the benefits of using the picture-in-picture function. But in the latest Android, programmers have improved it: now the user can, while working with the main program, in parallel not only observe what is happening with the second (for example, correspond with friends in the messenger and simultaneously watch the video). There is no need to go to the second window to stop or continue watching the video: when you hover over one of the windows, control buttons appear.

It has become much easier to manage notifications. If in the previous version, in order to block or enable notifications, it was necessary to go to the settings, now the user saves time. To block unnecessary messages, just double-click on it and click on the corresponding switch.

Starting with firmware 6.0, when the application was first launched, the system asked the user for permission to access data (contacts, photos, etc.). In the latest OS, developers have paid even more attention to security. Now it is possible to specify the sources from which it is forbidden to download programs.

Which smartphones and tablets will update to Android 8.0

Unfortunately, not all gadgets on OS from Google will be able to get the update to Oreo. Basically, the new firmware will be available for flagship smartphones, tablets and some models of the middle price segment of almost all well-known brands.

You can update the Android version to 8.0 on the following models of smartphones and tablets:

  • Google: Nexus and Pixel
  • Samsung: Galaxy S8, S8 +, S7, S7 edge, 2017 A and J series smartphones, Tab S3 tablet;
  • Sony: XA1, XA1 Ultra, Xperia X, XZ, X Performance;
  • Xiaomi: Mi 5S, Mi 5S Plus, Note 2, Mi 6, Mi 6 Plus;
  • LG: V10, V20, G6, G5, Q6;
  • HTC: U11, U Play, Desire 10 Pro, HTC 10, 10 Evo, U Ultra;
  • Nokia: Nokia 3, 5, 6 and 8;
  • Motorola: Z Droid, Z Force Droid, Moto G4, G5, Z, X4, G5S;
  • OnePlus: 5, 3, 3T models.

The list of devices that will be updated to Oreo is subject to change. To clarify information on the desired device model, you need to go to the manufacturer's website or contact the support service of an official representative.

How to update Android on your phone over the air

You can update to the latest version in the following ways: make an update using a PC or start the process of changing the firmware on the phone itself.

The last method is the easiest, since the user is not required to install special software or use additional devices.

By default, the phone is set to receive a notification when a new version of Android is available. When the latest OS version appears on the screen of the gadget, a corresponding message will appear.

If the owner of the gadget disabled this function earlier, then, accordingly, he will not be notified of the opportunity to download new software.

How to download and install the current Android, for example from 5.1 to 6.0, without connecting to a computer:

After the software is downloaded, you must either install or postpone the installation.

How to update Android on your phone manually

Owners of gadgets have the opportunity to change the firmware, for example, to 7.0, using special utilities (Odin, KDZ Updater), even though there is no current software from the manufacturer.

When using these utilities, you must act strictly according to the instructions, otherwise the phone may fail.

In addition to programs, you need to download the driver and the official firmware to your PC (firmware resolution - tar or tar.md5).

Most often, users resort to this method of changing Android when they want to return a previous version (the new firmware with its changes does not always justify their expectations).

Before connecting the smartphone to a computer, you must run it in Download Mode. To do this, you need to hold down 2 or 3 buttons on the phone (depending on the brand).

For example, in order to enter the Download Mode menu on a Samsung phone, hold down the power, volume down and home button.

If the user did everything correctly, the following image will appear on the screen:

The last step is to press the volume up button. As a result, the following will appear on the phone:

Installing a new version of Android using the Odin app:

If the folder with the firmware contains not one, but three files at once, then they should be correctly distributed in the "Files" area:

  • the file, the name of which contains "CODE", is added to the "PDA" section;
  • a file with the word “MODEM” in its name is added to the “PHONE” section;
  • in the "CSC" section, specify the path to the file, the name of which contains the word "CSC".

How to update Android on a phone via a computer

You can change Android through a computer using a special program from the manufacturer.

There are two applications for Samsung gadgets: Samsung Kies, or Smart Switch. The difference between these programs is that late firmware cannot be loaded through Samsung Kies (you can upgrade from a maximum of Android 4.2.2 to 5.0).

Updating Android with Smart Switch:

  • we connect the smartphone to the PC;
  • if a smartphone with an old software version is connected, the user will receive a message about the possibility to download the new version. Click on the "Continue" button;
  • waiting for the new software to be installed on the phone.

In a similar way, you can update through the Samsung Kies program. Likewise, when the device is connected and the program is launched on the screen (if there is new software), the user will be prompted to install the firmware.

What are the consequences of an Android OS update

It is strictly forbidden to prevent a running update from android 4.4.2 to 5.0 (or to other OS versions). Interruption of the installation may lead to the loss of personal information (photos, contacts may be deleted), incorrect operation of the device or its failure.

Before connecting your smartphone to a PC, make sure the USB cable is working properly.

Before installing the new firmware, you should make a backup copy of your data in any known way (use the program to create backups, synchronize photos, videos and contacts with your Google account, etc.).

Android 4.4 KitKat - this is the latest version of the Google OS, creating which the developer pursued the goal of making it available to all gadgets. Taking care of its users, Google has developed a special application that allows you to check how the new version will work on a specific device. New models this year will have the latest OS version, everyone else can update Android to 4.4 KitKat.
Traditionally, the new version will provide an increase in performance, but the most visible updates are in the interface. Changed the developer and the color of the design, prompting users to make their own choice. Another change concerned the use of the display. In addition, the updated version has several additional profiles for Bluetooth. In addition, KitKat allows for wireless printing of various documents, and also received a new graphic editor. Along with the release of the next update, qualitatively new ones appeared, presented in all existing genres.

How to update Android to 4.4 on a tablet or phone?

The easiest way is to download Android 4.4 on the developer's website, and then follow the instructions to download and install the OC update.
You can also install files manually using a home PC with fastboot and adb installed and a USB cable to connect these devices to each other. Then you need to do the following:

1. After connecting the tablet to the PC, boot it in bootloader mode.
2. In the command line, write fastboot flash recovery specifying the file name.
3. Reboot the device into a new recovery by entering the adb reboot recovery command.
4. Download the archive file with the latest SuperSU version.
5. Sew the unpacked file via TWRP or Clockworkmod.
6. Reboot the device and use.

In the event that the tablet has an alternative recovery, you can download and directly install the Android 4.4 KitKat update on the tablet.

1. Download it from the Google site.
2. Download the zip file to the tablet via the adb sideload command without unpacking.
3. Reboot the device and use.
When installing the update, do not forget that it does not always end well. In some cases, the new version of the OS may perform worse than the previous one.

The Android operating system is very popular today among the owners of various gadgets - phones, tablets and others. That is why manufacturers are trying to follow the process of updating the Android version and implement their support in their models, at least the flagships. Therefore, you need to know how to update Android on your phone yourself.

The developers of any system strive to improve their product. Android is no exception. Updating the system leads to an increase in the performance of the gadget, the elimination of errors and imperfections of previous versions. All this leads to an improvement in smartphone performance in general. Android updates are often noticeable even visually, when the interface changes and some new configurations appear.

Distinguish between micro and macro updates. Small ones usually weigh no more than 70-100 MB, but macro can weigh an average of 500 MB. To update the Android version, it is desirable to have a Wi-Fi connection or unlimited Internet. Although the latter can significantly delay the whole process.
If the auto-update function is enabled in the phone settings, the user will simply be notified at the end that the operating system has been updated. Self-installation is relevant in such cases:

  • no auto-update, there is information about the new version;
  • in the current version there is no support for existing or new applications on the phone;
  • there was a need to roll back the system.

For example, my LG L90 smartphone has Android 4.4 as its native version. But after the first inclusion, it was immediately updated to the latest version, or rather, to 5.0.2.
We will consider those cases when you need to manually update the software.

Update methods

Via phone

How to update the Android version with only a phone?

This method, in my opinion, is the simplest. To update with it, you need:

  • select the General tab in the phone settings;
  • tap "About phone";
  • select "General" again (I have duos, so it may differ);
  • you can view all information about the software version or go directly to the "Update Center";
  • here you can update applications that require it, or immediately the system;
  • selecting the second item, we will see that you can check Android for updates, as well as enable / disable the ability to auto-update;
  • after selecting a checkpoint, the phone warns that to carry out this operation, the device must have access to any network except 2G (everything was disabled for me);
  • after connecting to the network, the search for updates is carried out, after which either a message pops up about the relevance of the version, or the update begins.

The main condition for this method is a high level of battery charging so that the update process does not end with a force majeure event. You can even update Android 2.3 to 4.0 in this way.

Manual flashing

Micro and macro updates to Android appear almost every day. Manufacturers do not always have time, or may not strive, to work them out for all models. Sometimes it takes a very long time, and the update may not come at all. How do you ensure that you don't miss out on improvements for your phone?

In such a situation, you can independently change the firmware of your smartphone via Recovery. For this you need:
  • From the official website of the manufacturer of our device, we download the zip archive with the firmware we need (we check the version number and build date before that) and place it on the phone's memory card.
  • Turn off your smartphone and go to Recovery. All phones may have a different login combination. For example, on LG L90 it is “Power + Vol (up or down)”, on Motorola and Lenovo phones it is “Power + Vol up + Vol down”.
  • Select the "Apply update" item.
  • Now the item "Choose from sdcard" ("Choose from internal storage" in case the archive was saved in the internal memory).
  • Go to the desired folder, find the installed firmware file and run it.
  • After the installation process has been completed, you need to return to the main menu and from there reboot the device "Reboot system now"

Using a computer

How to update the operating system if there is no access to Recovery?

In this case, you need to have a cord for connecting the smartphone to a PC, as well as a disk with drivers for the official service program for a particular brand of phones. The latter may not be available, but this program can be downloaded.

Let's consider this method using LG phones as an example. You can download the KDZ Updater application for them. The prerequisites are:

  • download the Android system update (archive KDZ_Update.zip);
  • mobile phone charge level is 50% and higher;
  • lG drivers are installed;
  • availability of a firmware file for a specific model of the KDZ format;
  • the absence of any other program for LG (not counting the driver).

The procedure for updating software for Android through this program is as follows:

  1. Unzip KDZ_Update.zip and transfer to the system disk of your computer. Move the firmware file there too. Run the msxml.msi file from the archive.
  2. Enable USB debugging on LG through phone settings. In my case, the fifth Android did not immediately provide such an opportunity. This does not mean that there is no way to turn it on. First, in the information about the phone, you need to find the build number and click on it from 5 to 10 times in a row. A notification "You are now a developer" will pop up. Now in the general settings the item "Developer options" will appear. There is the item "USB Debugging".
  3. Then turn off the device and remove the battery (some models of LG phones need this for flashing).
  4. Press and hold the "Vol down" button, connect the smartphone to the computer. S / W Upgrade should appear. If it is not there, you should repeat everything, but with the battery inserted. Further, the battery must be in the phone in any case.
  5. Go to Device Manager on your computer. Disable LGE Mobile USB Modem.
  6. In KDZ Updater, in the type field from the drop-down list, select 3GQCT, and in phonemode - DIAG.
  7. In the KDZ file field, write the path to the firmware file or simply select it via the open files button.
  8. If everything was done correctly, the user will see that the system is being updated.

You should use the same method and, if necessary, roll back the version to Android to any of the previous ones. Do not forget that the software made by the software will lead to the fact that all files, contacts and SMS stored in the internal memory of the phone may be lost.

Google releases major updates to the Android OS every year. Users of Nexus (and now Pixel) devices receive the latest firmware releases in a timely manner and can be installed without a computer. However, other manufacturers are in no hurry (and often do not have time) to quickly create OS assemblies adapted for their devices, and updates have to wait for months. Some companies do not bother with the release of fresh firmware at all, users of their devices are held hostage to the old version of the operating system. However, most of these problems are easily solved with a little effort. Our material will tell you how to install a new version of Android.

How to update Android with regular means

The functionality of the Android OS provides for the ability to receive updates from the manufacturer's server via the Internet. The item responsible for receiving updates is usually located in the settings menu, next to the information about the phone. Depending on the modification of the system, the appearance of this item may differ, but the functions are the same everywhere. This is how the update menu looks in pure Android 5.1 Lolipop (top item).

And this is the appearance of the entry to the update submenu in the MIUI8 OS from XIaomi (below the screenshot).

After entering the submenu, the system will contact the manufacturer's server and check if a new firmware version has appeared. If there is one, the phone will inform you about it and start downloading it. After that, installation will occur (it is advisable to charge the battery to 50% or higher) and the device will reboot.

Unfortunately, it is not always possible to update Android on a tablet or phone this way. Even if the new firmware has already been released, manufacturers do not send the update to everyone at once, since their servers may not be able to withstand a heavy load. Sometimes it takes days or even weeks to wait for the update to reach the end user. However, in this case, you can outsmart the developers and avoid waiting.

How to update Android if there are no updates

Before updating Android, if there are no updates, forcibly, you need to make sure that only you do not have updates, and that other owners of a smartphone or tablet of this model have already downloaded the firmware. To do this, you can visit the profile forum (XDA, w3bsit3-dns.com, the forum of your brand fans, etc.) and see if there are any messages about the release of updates. If they are, you need to find the update file for your smartphone. Make sure that the version matches: many devices are produced in several modifications, the firmware for which is incompatible! When the firmware file is found, you need to download the Android update and save it to the phone's memory or to a USB flash drive. After that, go to the above system update item and click the ellipsis icon. On stock Android 5.1, the additional options menu looks like this.

Similarly, the interface of the menu for selecting update options over the air and on MIUI is implemented.

In the first case, the item "Local updates" allows you to update Android from a flash drive, in the second - "Select a firmware file". The captions may differ depending on the translator, but the general meaning of the name should be approximately the same. After selecting the firmware file, the system will check it for integrity and compatibility with the smartphone, reboot the system and install the update. Again, this must be done with a charged battery, in order to avoid a sudden shutdown of the device.

How to install a new version of Android if there are no official updates at all

If the manufacturer "forgot" about the customers and does not release firmware updates for old devices, the chance to get a fresh OS still remains. There are many enthusiasts out there developing alternative builds of Android for many smartphones. The most famous is the CyanogenMod project, the OS assembly of which is installed on more than 15 million devices.

Also, quite often, alternative OS assemblies are made by small groups of enthusiasts or loners, using firmware from another similar model equipped with a more recent version of the OS as a basis. However, before updating Android on a tablet or smartphone to such an assembly, you need to take into account that it may work unstable. The fact is that it is very difficult to assemble a 100% working firmware alone, therefore such assemblies often have bugs and flaws.

To update the Android version to an unofficial assembly, you need to follow the instructions for flashing a specific smartphone model (the flashing procedure is different for different phones). The easiest way is to install the update from the Recovery menu. First you need to download the Android update and save it to your memory card. To enter the recovery, you need to turn off the smartphone, hold down the volume up and on buttons at the same time, wait for the menu entry. Sometimes, in addition to these two, you need to hold down the "home" button under the screen (for Samsung smartphones). To update Android, you need to find an item in the menu containing something like "Install from sdcard" (navigation is carried out with the volume rocker, the choice is by short pressing the power button), find the firmware on the flash drive and install it.

Sometimes, to flash, you first need to install an alternative recovery menu, for example, TWRP, since the native one may not support the installation of unofficial updates. After the Android update is installed, you need to select "Wipe data & cache" and reboot. Before updating in this way, carefully read the instructions so as not to break your phone or tablet.

Another way to install official and unofficial Android firmware updates is through your computer.

How to update any phone to the latest Android version - all the most effective ways in one article! The world does not stand still and this fully applies to the software of mobile gadgets. Updates for operating systems are regularly developed to eliminate the identified shortcomings of the outdated system. Below is the update guide for Android devices.

Inexperienced owners of mobile devices often neglect the procedure for performing an OS upgrade, which leads to instability of the device, a decrease in the number of supported programs, etc. Therefore, the answer to the question: "Should I update the android?" - is obvious. Yes, if possible and the hardware capabilities of the phone or tablet meet the requirements of the new shell.

It should be noted that most programs are "sharpened" for the current Android modifications. In outdated OS versions, a significant amount of software may not function correctly or not start at all.

Manufacturers of mobile equipment regularly carry out planned work to identify and eliminate shortcomings in early OS modifications, as well as add new functions to the system that make it easier for the user to use the gadget and ensure energy efficiency.

But not only the manufacturer is working in this direction. Third-party specialists also release custom firmware, which sometimes surpasses the official software in terms of speed and conciseness of external equipment. The main disadvantages of third-party firmware are the manufacturer's removal from the warranty service of the device immediately after the installation of unofficial software, and there are also frequent cases of "oskirpichivaniya" gadget after the procedure performed by inexperienced users.

Among the disadvantages of updating with licensed firmware modifications, it should be noted that the parallel installation of a large number of utilities that are not needed by the owner of the phone or tablet. It is not possible to remove them from the system without root rights. Also, after the upgrade, some icons on the main screen may disappear, but this means that you just need to install their more advanced counterparts from the market.

Preparatory measures before performing the procedure

Before updating the Android version, you must complete the following preliminary steps:

  • Save important information for the user from the memory of the device to an external medium or perform a full backup of the OS;
  • Fully charge the device;
  • Decide on the version to be installed (official or from third-party developers) and download it.

Updating Android is simple, but how do you know which modification is the latest? There are many ways to do this, from reading information on thematic forums in social networks to studying news from official sources.

Find out the version of Android on your device

For example, an interesting toy from Google opens in "Android 6.0".

Is it possible to lose data and contacts when updating Android?

When updating the OS, all data stored in the device will be irretrievably lost. Therefore, before proceeding to resolve the issue of how to update Android on a tablet or phone, you need to save data and contacts from the internal memory of the device to an external medium or cloud storage on the Internet.

Note: All users of Android gadgets have a Google account and access to a free 15 GB memory on GoogleDisk.

  • Then "Software update";
  • Touch the line "Update";
  • Wait for the download process to complete;
  • Click "Install";
  • Wait until the end of the installation process and restart the gadget;
  • Done.

Important: Make sure that the device has access to the Internet. It is recommended to use a Wi-Fi connection, as the amount of downloaded data may exceed the daily mobile traffic provided by the cellular operator.

At first glance, it may seem that the solution to the problem of how to update Android on a phone or tablet is absolutely simple and not worth a detailed consideration, but there are some nuances that are obvious to specialists, however, unknown to users who have only recently become owners of a mobile device.

Usually the system notifies about the availability of updates. Then you just need to follow the instructions of the update wizard and the latest version of the OS will be successfully installed in the gadget. But if such a message does not appear, then the procedure can be carried out independently.

To do this, you need to do the following:

  1. Open the settings menu;
  2. Next, in the "About device" tab, check the "System update" subsection;
  3. The display here of the inscription "Download" indicates that there is an actual modification of the OS available for installation in the device;
  4. Tap "Download";
  5. Wait until the process is complete;
  6. Then click "Restart and install";
  7. Wait until the end of the process and the automatic restart of the gadget;
  8. Done.

Updating with third-party applications

If you cannot use the built-in system tools, a third-party application "ROM Manager" will help you to update. After launching the application, the user will see a recommendation to install "ClockWorkMod Recovery" (CWM). You must agree and install.

  1. Save the file with the firmware on the SD card of the gadget (it is better to download it from the manufacturer's resource);
  2. Click "Install ROM from SD";
  3. Activate "Save current ROM";
  4. The program will display a warning in which you need to confirm the firmness of your intentions;
  5. Wait until the end of the process;
  6. Done.

If it turned out to be impossible to install using the above program, then "CWM" will come to the rescue.

You will need to complete the following steps:

  • Save a file with the latest OS version to SD;
  • Run "CWM Recovery" (it is quickly launched from the "ROM Manager" menu);
  • Specify "wipe data / factory reset" (using the volume keys);
  • Then select "wipe cache";
  • Select "install zipfrom sd card" and press the physical "Home" key on the device or the "On / Off" key;
  • Then show the application the location of the downloaded file with the latest OS;
  • Click "Yes - Install /sdcard/update.zip";
  • Wait until the end;
  • Click "reboot system now";
  • Wait until the end of the device restart process;
  • Done.

Sequencing:

  1. Download the application "Kies" from the Internet (it is free);
  2. Connect an android device to a PC, it is recommended to use a cable connection;
  3. Run "Kies";
  4. The application will automatically monitor the availability of up-to-date software for the device;
  5. The application will recommend an upgrade, with which you must agree;
  6. Wait for the process to complete;
  7. Done.

Manual Android update

If there is no access to the global network from an android device, you can manually update its OS, having previously saved a file with firmware in the gadget's memory.

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Enter the Recovery menu. To do this, turn off the gadget and press the combination of buttons that is indicated in its operating manual, for example, the "Off" button and one of the volume keys;
  2. Go to the "Apply update" tab;
  3. Specify the location of the archive with the latest firmware in the gadget's memory;
  4. Wait until the end of the process;
  5. Done.

Custom firmware for Android - how to install and where to download?

This requires the "Root" authority, therefore, through the "PlayMarket" install the utility "z4root".

Having provided yourself with extended powers, install the "Team Win Recovery Project".

Then download your favorite custom firmware version, for example, from the resource: https://mdforum.ru/showthread.php?t\u003d791. Or just download on request in a search engine: AOKP, CyanogenMod, PAC ROM, MIUI, Paranoid Android or Illusion ROMS.

Now all that remains to be done is the following few steps:

  1. Enter "Recovery" (how to do it is indicated in the previous paragraph of this instruction);
  2. Open the "Wipe" tab;
  3. Delete partitions "/ data" and "/ system";
  4. Go to the main menu and enter the "Install" tab;
  5. Specify the location of the firmware file;
  6. Wait until the end of the process;
  7. Done.

For example, when the Android 2 modification is used in the gadget, it is not always possible to upgrade to 4, since this requires the device developer to make special changes to the software.

Also, users who use programs unsupported by current software modifications in the device are in no hurry to upgrade to a more recent version.

After the update, additional utilities are often installed, which the owner of the device does not need, but only clutters the memory of the device. Such applications are protected from uninstallation by the user.

Updating the software and a large number of applications in it leads to an increased consumption of traffic, and hence the financial resources of the owner of the mobile device.

If the device has been used for a long time, then the new software version may not match the hardware components of the gadget.

Disable automatic Android updates

You need to do the following:

  1. Enter the settings;
  2. Go to the "About device" tab;
  3. Then open the section "Software update";
  4. Uncheck the box "Auto update";
  5. Restart the device;
  6. Done.

How to revert to a previous version of Android?

Sometimes the owner of an updated gadget is not happy with its work. In this case, you can resort to the following algorithm:

  1. After entering the parameters, tap the item "Confidentiality";
  2. Then go to the "Reset settings" tab;
  3. Click "Reset phone settings";
  4. Wait until the end of the process and restart the gadget;
  5. Done.

One of the best applications has already been described above in this ROM Manager manual. However, on the Internet you can find decent programs that surpass ROM Manager in some respects, for example, "Android Update Manager". It is supported by all modern versions of Windows and allows you to update Android via PC without much hassle.

The TouchScreenTune application optimizes the sensitivity and responsiveness of the touchscreen. It will be especially useful in the following cases: ...
