Samsung Galaxy smartphones. Samsung Galaxy J6 (2018) vs J4 (2018) Samsung Galaxy J 6 Comparative Review

Samsung, having released fresh models J6 and J4, traditionally put the year of release to them in the name. But both devices are so-so suitable for use in 2018. And if the Galaxy J6 still has any chances, the Galaxy J4 is a complete failure. Below, in order, we understand why new state employees can disappoint even fans of the company.

Immediately you need to announce the cost of smartphones in official retail:

  • Samsung Galaxy J4 (2018) will cost 12,990 rubles
  • Samsung Galaxy J6 (2018) costs 15,990 rubles

Spoiler: the prices are not weakly overpriced, and the main claims to the devices will come from this as well. Now let's go.

There is also a special mode for the street, which immediately raises the brightness almost to blindness if you turn it on indoors. But on the street it helps. The mode is turned on only manually, and it turns off itself after 15 minutes, and it does not matter whether the screen was used or not. That is, with long absenteeism, you will have to activate more than once, and these are unnecessary gestures - and this really starts to enrage somewhere for the third time, it has been tested in practice. In short, sheer omission.

Both J4 and J6 have a 3/32 GB memory combination, although, according to official figures, the younger model should only have 2/16 GB. Let's consider it a pleasant surprise, because with only two gigs of RAM, the smartphone would also work slowly.

Trays for SIM and SD are separate in both devices. Another pleasant surprise.

Performance

Here we must pay tribute, the devices cope well with everyday tasks. I did not observe any freezes or glitches, everything is smooth and beautiful. The system, along with the shell, eat about half of the RAM, and the remaining 1.5 GB is generally enough to work with several applications. In a fierce multitasking (more than 5 applications) devices are already starting to unload running programs from memory, but there is nothing surprising.

But synthetic performance tests gave very modest results. With everyday use, this may not affect, but heavy games, for example, suffer from such indicators a lot. And the Galaxy J4 figures are depressing in themselves.

Let's move on to games.

PUBG mobile on Galaxy J6 plows only on low graphics settings, but plows smoothly. On the Galaxy J4, the picture was often twitching even at low settings, but there were no strong lags. In 35 minutes of the game, smartphones were in fact discharged by 10% and heated up to 35-36 degrees (according to CPU-Z) - the result is adequate.

World Of Tanks J4

World Of Tanks J6

In World of Tanks, it is also comfortable to play only at low settings, because on medium it starts to jerk and spoils the process, and at high it can hang mercilessly. Over time and charge consumption, the situation on J6 is the same - 10% in 35 minutes. The screenshots, however, speak of a completely meager expense, but this is not true. The J4 is better with energy saving: it took 7% of the charge in 35 minutes.

Cameras

The manufacturer does not disclose the camera module, but the parameters are the same for both devices: 13 megapixels with f / 1.9 aperture. We consider examples of pictures in comparison. To begin with - a photo with the main lens in sunny weather, with and without HDR:

J4 - day photo without HDR

J6 - day photo without HDR

J4 - Photo by day with HDR

J6 - Photo by day with HDR

As you can see, in general the picture looks good, although it does not amaze the imagination with its appearance. The difference between the HDR mode and the auto mode is small: a weak lightening of dark areas and an improvement in the contrast of the sky. And for some reason, I personally get the impression that the J4 shoots a little better. The following results are obtained at night:

J4 - in the "night view" mode

J6 - in "night mode"

J4 - at night with HDR

J6 - at night with HDR

A special "night mode" wildly blows the image, everything becomes yellow, blurry and too bright. As I have found out through trial and error, it is more applicable to HDR night conditions, the photos are obtained with acceptable lighting. The detail, however, is lame here, and the graininess of the frames is just off scale.

At night, you won't be able to shoot anything suitable for any device.

Let's move on to the front-end. Galaxy J6 offers 8MP (f / 1.9), Galaxy J4 5MP (f / 2.2). Let's start with the older model: in addition to regular selfies, you can also shoot portraits with blur, as well as apply a bunch of animated face masks. What comes out of this, see below:

J6 - Selfie with blur

J6 - Selfie with mask

In general, the quality is not bad, only when using filters and masks it drops sharply: the picture turns out to be heavily overexposed and suffers in general. So it's best to indulge in this only in a room with good light. The Galaxy J4 does not offer such features, we can only take a wide-angle selfie there (it is also available in the J6).

J4 - widescreen selfie

By the way, every smartphone has a front-facing flash, so you can make yourself at any time of the day. Well, only with quality and detail, the situation does not change, at least on the street: low definition, graininess, excessive yellowness.

J4 - Selfie with Flash

J4 - Selfie without flash

J6 - Selfie with flash

J6 - Selfie without flash

As for video, each model can only record 1080p videos, 4K resolution will not be available to their owners. But the video is written with high quality, with good detail. True, there is no automatic stabilizer here, so the picture can walk in different directions. See examples:

Software

The functionality is bad, and especially in the Samsung Galaxy J4. There is not even an automatic brightness control, so what can we say about some smart gestures and virtual buttons. Although the older model also distinguished itself only by the presence of a fingerprint scanner and unlocking in the face, everything else is identical.

Yes, in the Galaxy J6 you can still customize the display of the on-screen buttons - but no matter how you set them up, they are always there on the main screen, and during use you still have to manually push up with a swipe, because the device is not fully adapted to work without them.

Button settings

The face sensor in Galaxy J6 (2018) sometimes works slowly, sometimes you have to wait 2-3 seconds for the phone to “see” a familiar face. There are no problems with the fingerprint scanner, everything is fast and smooth. True, the scanner itself is not very convenient, as if it is too narrow, and therefore you do not always completely fall on it with your finger.

Big minus - no LED for notifications

Not in any model. True, this offers the function of repeated vibration and signal if you take the phone in your hands, but this is a bit strange solution, and, frankly, it does not always work. And, unfortunately, only this is available - even no screen activation is provided upon notification. So there's a high risk of missing out on something important, and that's not cool.

Sound

In the headphones, the phones play really loudly, but there is frankly not enough lows, and at the maximum volume, the sound starts to “dirty” a lot - sores touch both Samsungs. And the overall sound itself is average, nothing outstanding. But this is to be expected. To improve the quality, you can turn on the Dolby Atmos function with different modes - it will help, but not much.

The function from Dolby plows only with headphones, for the external speaker there is an equalizer with various improvements and effects. Yes, all this adds some depth and character to the sound, but in the end - an average quality sound, which is almost wheezing at maximum volume, and so-so audible at medium volume.

By the way, the Galaxy J6 also has a “separate sound from the application” feature, which allows, for example, to play music from the player on external speakers, and everything else (game or video) on the phone.

Autonomous work

Battery life is the main plus of smartphones

Perhaps the batteries are the only unconditional advantage over the rest. Both devices have a 3,000 mAh battery, but the results are different, and here the Galaxy J4 is the winner. With fairly active use from 10 am (internet, calls, social networks, camera, music, brightness above average + outdoor mode, screen more than 3 hours), the device retained as much as 62% of the charge by 1 am!

The next day, with the same use and with games to boot, the smartphone lasted almost until 20:00 without overnight recharging (with a screen time of more than 6.5 hours). The indicators are really cool, this smartphone was a pleasant surprise.

The Galaxy J6 has a worse picture, but in the case of it, in one day I fit everything I could. So, starting at 8:30 am with maximum load (Internet, social networks, calls, camera, games, maps + navigator, music, brightness above average + "on the street" mode), the smartphone was discharged to 30% by nine in the evening, while the screen worked 4.5 hours. Further, the mode of use was sparing, and by midnight there were 15% (6 hours of the screen).

In summary, we can say that with all the shortcomings and jambs of smartphones, you can be sure that they will last at least a whole day, under any load. The only fly in the ointment is charging time. The J6 takes an average of 2.5 hours to replenish the full capacity of the battery, and the J4 takes 3 hours. Yes, fast charging was not delivered, but the excellent autonomy of the devices in this case covers this drawback.

Outcome

It's sad that Samsung pays all its attention only to the top-end "S" series, because negligence towards the younger segments gives rise to such Galaxy J4 (2018) and Galaxy J6 (2018). A set of really necessary things is not in them, and what is - in half of the cases resembles hack. For me personally, one hundred percent plus is only the autonomous work of the J4 and the fingerprint scanner / face unlock J6. And the latter still has a good appearance. The rest - constant reservations, shortcomings, remarks. There are really a lot of them at the current cost of devices.

Of course, the favorite in this comparison is the Samsung Galaxy J6 (2018), and if you choose someone from this pair, then its, although the price looks really overpriced. And if we consider both devices not only in mutual comparison, but in general against the background of the current smartphone market, then you can find options much better, and at the same time, damn it, cheaper. For example, representatives of the middle segment from Xiaomi will easily beat Koreans (see

Now let's talk about the older brother - consider the Samsung Galaxy J6 (2018).

It was decided not to indulge the budget J-series by Samsung's standards this year: the body is completely plastic, the metal trim was decided to be reserved for the more expensive A-class. The case is non-separable, it is assembled normally, but it would be strange to expect something different from Samsung.

I got a sample in black, the matte body very quickly becomes covered with greasy prints, but this is a common thing, you can survive.

In terms of appearance, Galaxy J6 (2018) looks interesting, if you do not take into account the plastic case, which is usual for inexpensive phones, and not for devices for 16 thousand rubles. There is an elongated screen, the front panel is smooth - there is no usual physical button under the screen. Reasonable minimalism, everything is neat and cute.

At the same time, we added a fingerprint scanner, which is not available in. Here the scanner is located at the back, it works fine, although its shape is not the most convenient. In addition to it, the data is also protected by the face scanner - the function works with the help of the front camera, there is no special set of sensors. Face recognition does not work very quickly, the process is somewhat slow.

Screen

The screen is the most common in terms of characteristics: it has a resolution of 720x1480 pixels, a diagonal of 5.6 inches, an aspect ratio of 18: 9, a protective 2.5D glass. As usual with Samsung, it's Super AMOLED. Feels like the matrix is \u200b\u200bthe same as in the cheaper one. Of the pros - bright colors, a juicy picture, but at the corners the white color goes into blue tones. And it is very, very strange that there is no sensor to adjust the brightness, the backlight is only manually adjustable.

Filling

The factory specifications are as follows: the phone has an eight-core Samsung Exynos 7870 processor with a frequency of 1.6 GHz, 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of its own memory. There is a microSD tray, and it is separate. Conveniently, you don't have to remove the second SIM card if you need to put in a memory card.

In any case, out of a pair of Galaxy J4 and Galaxy J6, I liked the older model better. At the same time, I cannot recommend it for purchase, there are a lot of compromises here. I hope that the next generation of J-series smartphones will turn out to be more successful and balanced, while the devices look very weak.

If you take a mid-range smartphone, replace the metal case with a plastic one, and install cameras more simply, at the same time dropping the price by almost half, you get a potential hit Samsung Galaxy J6 2018. This smartphone is equipped with the same system-on-a-chip, screen and battery. like the one for which in our retail they ask on average $ 385, while for the J6 2018 you need to pay only 230 evergreens. In general, at first glance, the offer is very tempting.

Appearance

Outwardly, the smartphone looks quite expensive and visually differs little from. Of course, there are differences in the details. For example, J6 2018 does not have curly inserts for antennas. However, he doesn't need them, because the body is made of plastic (polycarbonate), not metal. In addition, the camera and fingerprint sensor are not combined into a common unit, as in the case or, which we recently tested.

It is also worth noting a slightly larger thickness than in similar characteristics. The screen occupies 76% of the front surface, which is a good result for a relatively inexpensive smartphone, and it looks great. Despite the absence of a metal frame, the body has an extremely high torsional rigidity, so when trying to twist and squeeze, it practically does not give in and does not emit any sounds.

In front of the display is a front camera, earpiece, proximity and light sensors, and a flash. From the rear, you can see a camera, a fingerprint sensor, and a flash.

On the left side surface there is a pair of volume control keys, as well as a pair of trays, one of which is designed for installing a SIM card and microSD media, and the other - only for a SIM card. Both trays use nanoSIM cards. On the right side there is a speaker and a power button.

The upper end is empty. Below is a microphone, a 3.5 mm mini-jack audio jack, and a microUSB connector. Of course, I would like to see USB Type-C here, but given the fact that it is even content with a microUSB connector, it was difficult to expect more in the much more affordable J6 2018.

Display

The smartphone uses a 5.6-inch SuperAMOLED-matrix with HD + resolution and an aspect ratio of 18.5: 9. The exact same matrix is \u200b\u200bused in the recently reviewed one. The viewing angles are huge, which is a feature of the type of matrix used. When the maximum luminescence level is set, the brightness of the white field in the [Adaptive] mode is 311.32 cd / m 2, and in other modes - 298 ... 299 cd / m 2. The black color in the case of SuperAMOLED displays is extremely deep, and, accordingly, the contrast level is incredibly high.

The default [Adaptive] mode traditionally provides the highest brightness, but the Delta E color deviation is the largest. In addition, the color temperature is greatly increased in this mode. In other display modes, the color temperature is close to the reference value of 6500 K. [Basic] is the most accurate in terms of color quality, but the gamut is the smallest. However, this drawback is completely insignificant, because the overlap of the sRGB color space is almost complete. In general, if you need not overly saturated colors, but natural ones, then the [Basic] mode is perfect.

Sound

The speaker is quite loud, and the sound is clear, without any pronounced defects. The system speaker also sounds good, but nothing more. The sound is clear and detailed, but, as in the case, the volume of the sound is clearly not enough, primarily due to the low frequency range. In addition, the speaker is not particularly loud. When playing a test signal with a frequency of 1 kHz at a distance of 1 meter from the smartphone, a level of 71.3 dBA was recorded. And this is only 0.1 dBA more than in the case. Most likely, the older smartphone uses an identical speaker.

The SoCs and amplifiers in the J6 2018 are also likely identical, because the measurements of the signal level at the audio output turned out to be extremely similar. When operating on a 32 Ohm load, the result is 352.2 mV, when using a 16 Ohm load - 262.1 mV. During the evaluation of the sound quality at the audio output, all proprietary add-ons (Adapt Sound, Professional tube amplifier, UHQ upscaler) were disabled, and the equalizer was set to the default position. Tests were carried out using RightMark Audio Analyzer software and an external Creative E-MU 0204 USB sound card. The final test score is "very good", and for most of the evaluated parameters - "excellent". It is noteworthy that the result for all the studied parameters is almost exactly the same as the indicators. The differences in the results are so scanty that they can be attributed to the measurement error. Actually, this confirms the guess that the J6 2018 and A6 2018 use identical amplifiers and strapping circuits.

Overall results, 24 bit / 48 kHz

Performance

The smartphone is based on the same system-on-a-chip as the Samsung Exynos 7 Octa 7870. This SoC is made using a 14 nm process technology, has 8 Cortex-A53 cores operating at a frequency of up to 1.6 GHz, as well as a video subsystem based on Mali-T830MP1. The volume of RAM type LPDDR3 is 2 GB, which is 1 GB less than the A6 2018.
System performance was measured in synthetics PCMark, 3DMark, Geekbench 4, AnTuTu v7. Memory speed was evaluated using the AndroBench application. Testing was also carried out in cross-platform javascript tests (Octane, Mozilla Kraken JavaScript and SunSpider). The results of these tests significantly depend on the browser used, so Google Chrome was used as the most common.
The following smartphones were chosen as opponents:
: Qualcomm Snapdragon 430, 3GB, RAM, 5.2 inches, 1080 * 1920;
: Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 3GB RAM 5.5 '' 1080 * 2280 ;
: Samsung Exynos 7 Octa 7870 3GB RAM 5.5 inch 720 * 1480

Camera

The smartphone is equipped with a front camera based on Samsung S5K4H5YC sensor (8 Mp, ¼ inches). The lens aperture is f / 1.9, which is quite good for a relatively affordable smartphone. The smartphone is capable of taking quite good selfies even in fairly low light. Also, do not forget about the front flash, which, together with the display at a distance of 1 meter from the smartphone, provides an illumination level of 9.77 lux. This is far from a record, but thanks to the joint work with the screen, the lighting is not too harsh, but at the same time powerful enough to get quite decent selfies even when shooting in complete darkness.

In the case of a rear flash at a distance of 1 meter, an illumination level of 61.1 lux was recorded. And again the results are repeated.

The rear camera is based on the Samsung S5K3L2 sensor (13 MP, 1 / 3.06 inches, phase detection autofocus). This sensor is found in much more affordable devices, for example, in smartphones of the Xiaomi Redmi 3 series, so you should not expect excellent results from it. But still the camera allows you to take pictures of quite decent quality. Only shooting with difficult lighting is hard for her. For example, on a cloudy day, the lack of dynamic range is acutely felt, and most importantly, the colors are unnatural, moreover, both in the photo and video mode.

In manual settings, you can select the exposure metering mode, exposure compensation, select the sensitivity level (ISO100… 800), as well as adjust the white balance. It is also worth noting the possibility of transferring camera control to third-party applications using the Camera 2 API and RAW (DNG) support. Unfortunately, in the case of a specific tested image, it was not possible to shoot in RAW - the output was a damaged RAW file.

To assess the quality of the image, the test pattern was shot with sensitivity in the range of ISO 100… 800 in steps of one stop. Below are the crop fragments.

Sample pictures

Macro photography

Illumination 50 lx + flash
Illumination 3 lux + flash

Video recording mode

The sensor used in the smartphone allows you to record FullHD video at a flow rate of 30 frames per second. However, sensors are not a bottleneck, because the SoC used is also no longer capable. Autofocus during recording works quite quickly and correctly - the use of built-in phase sensors affects.

Autonomous work

Unfortunately, since the spring of 2018, Samsung smartphones have been provided for testing with a wired blocker program that does not allow you to disable the satellite navigation module. Due to this feature, all test results of Samsung smartphones are now presented as informational only.

The smartphone is equipped with exactly the same display, system-on-a-chip and 3000 mAh battery as the more expensive one, so in theory the results should be identical, but the subject performed much better. In reading mode, it lasted 1012 minutes, in FullHD-video viewing mode - 799 minutes and 302 minutes in game mode.

A charger was not provided for testing, so a third-party charger with a configuration of 5V / 2.5A, 9V / 2A, 12V / 1.5A was taken, which was also used during testing. The indicator reached 85% of the battery capacity in 137 minutes, and it took 155 minutes to fully charge. The results are much more modest than those of the previously reviewed A6 2018. The SoC of this smartphone is identical, and no battery overheating was noticed during charging, from which we can conclude that in the Samsung J6 2018, support for high battery charging currents is cut at the software level.

Conclusion

The tested smartphone and much more expensive one have a lot in common, namely the screen, battery, system-on-a-chip, rear and front flash, audio path. So what are the differences? The body is plastic, not metal, the main camera is equipped with a lens with a slightly lower aperture, and the photosensors are simpler, the amount of RAM is 1 GB less, and support for the 5 GHz Wi-Fi range and faster charging is also cut (although the used SoC supports them). no NFC. That's all. Is it worth the premium they ask for? Here everyone decides for himself. But from a subjective point of view, it is not entirely logical to overpay about $ 150 for this at a cost of the experimental about $ 230.
As for the tested smartphone itself, it should be recognized as very successful. This is the case when you don't have to convince yourself that overpaying for an A-brand is a common thing. It has an excellent SuperAMOLED display with an aspect ratio of 18.5: 9 and high-quality sound on the analog audio output, powerful flashes .. In addition, the Samsung Galaxy J6 2018 impresses with its battery life. The manufacturers of the first echelon do not have a similar offer at all, and among the little-known solutions, only Vivo V7 + and Oppo A79 can be noted, which are slightly denser in terms of characteristics, but also significantly more expensive.
Minuses:
- microUSB connector;
- 5 GHz WiFi range is not supported;
- no NFC;
- low maximum display brightness;
- low volume level of the system speaker;
- slow battery charging;
Pros:
- high torsional rigidity of the body;
- color quality of the display (especially in the [Main] mode);
- high contrast display;
- huge viewing angles of the display;
- excellent sound quality at the analog audio output;
- excellent collaboration of the screen and LED-flash when taking selfies;
- the duration of battery life.

Performance

The processor is the backbone of any smartphone. Models built on the same platform guarantee roughly the same level of performance and capabilities for different operations.

The number of cores is a certain parameter that directly affects the performance of a smartphone. At least in a smartphone, all processors are dual-core. Devices of the middle and high price segment are equipped with four and eight-core processes. They differ in the clock speed at which each core operates, the design of the core itself, and the integrated graphics. The consumer should pay attention not only to the number of cores, but also to other parameters of the platform used.

The computing cores of the smartphone processor operate at a certain clock frequency - the most productive of them operate at high clock frequencies of 1.6 GHz.

Smartphone video

In order to shoot high-quality video from your smartphone, you should adhere to some rules. Before filming, wipe the lens with a special tissue. If it is not there, you need to breathe on it and wipe it with a piece of cotton clothing.

Correct focus also works for a high-quality picture, but when the subject is poorly lit, it becomes useless. When shooting video, you should avoid sudden movements; when moving the shooting to another object, you should not shift the camera from hand to hand, it is better to redirect the image by moving the body.

Remote control panels will allow you to work in a hazardous area, it is possible to edit an image using a video editor. Experienced cameramen are clear about what not to do - don't record from bottom to top. It will look strange and unconvincing. No need to use flash and shoot the subject against the sun. It is best not to overuse panoramic images. Do not start shooting with an empty smartphone and an overloaded memory.

Front-camera

The front camera of the Samsung Galaxy J6 2018 does not have a high-quality and bright screen. The smartphone has the cheapest low-resolution display. However, the clarity of such shooting is good, and the color rendition is just excellent, and the brightness margin is quite large. You can select and adjust both the overall color gamut and the saturation of one of the object's components. The phone does not provide sufficient brightness at maximum values, but there is no automatic brightness control, although the contrast when working with video is quite good.

A colorful picture is provided by two standard cameras: front and main. The resulting image is superimposed on each other. Further improvement of the footage is carried out by editing. In this way, wrinkles can be smoothed, skin tightened and tone improved. Close-ups and selfies taken with the front camera are especially good.

Sound and quality of music playback

High-quality sound is becoming one of the indicators of the successful operation of a smartphone. It is provided with a built-in speaker, internal converters and Bluetooth support. Speaker quality is easy to determine. It is enough to set the volume to the maximum value and track the sound quality.
