A type

Determining the type of device (phone or smartphone?) Is pretty simple. If you need a simple and inexpensive device for calls and SMS, it is recommended to opt for a telephone. A smartphone is more expensive, but it offers a wide variety of options: games, video, Internet, thousands of programs for all occasions. However, its battery life is significantly shorter than that of a simple phone.

In modern smartphones, not only ordinary SIM cards can be used, but also their more compact versions of micro SIM and nano SIM. eSIM is a SIM card integrated into the phone. It takes up almost no space and does not require a separate tray for installation. ESIM is not yet supported in Russia. Glossary of terms by category Mobile phones

Almost all modern smartphones have Wi-Fi and USB interfaces. Bluetooth and IRDA are less common. Wi-Fi is used to connect to the internet. USB is used to connect the phone to a computer. Many phones also have Bluetooth. It is used to connect wireless headphones, to connect the phone to wireless speakers, and to transfer files. A smartphone equipped with an IRDA interface can be used as a universal remote control.

Built-in GPS and GLONASS modules allow you to determine the coordinates of the phone using signals from satellites. In the absence of GPS, a modern smartphone can determine its own location using signals from the base stations of a cellular operator. However, finding coordinates based on signals from satellites is usually much more accurate.

Not only flagships, but also their stripped-down versions are under close public scrutiny. One of these devices is the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini, which looks like a copy of the older model. The phone was released in 2014.

The smartphone received an average hardware platform in terms of power. The technical characteristics are enough to perform tasks of average complexity. An incomprehensible decision of the manufacturer is the availability of 1.5 GB of RAM. Not 1 GB or 2 GB, namely 1.5 GB. This solution is repeatedly found in the J.

Appearance and design

The developers decided not to reinvent the wheel and used a design that became successful in the "adult" version of the phone. The only difference is the size. If the dimensions of the flagship device are 142x65x10.6 mm, then the mini-version turned out to be narrower, shorter, but thicker - 131.1x64.8x9.1 mm. Samsung Galaxy S5 mini also weighs less - 120 g versus 145 g.

note

The phone is on sale in four colors. In addition to the traditional black, white and gold, the device can be found in an unusual blue color scheme.

The smartphone is assembled with high quality, but with strong squeezing, you can hear the crunch of plastic. However, we must make allowances for the fact that the phone has a collapsible design. From the flagship, the hero of the review received not only the design, but also protection against water ingress according to the IP67 standard. The device can be completely submerged under water for a short period of time to a depth of 1 m.

The bezel has noticeable bezels at the top and bottom. They are larger than the older model. Under the screen, the manufacturer placed touch control buttons that perform the following actions: right - "Back", left - "Call the menu of running applications". Between the touch-sensitive buttons there is a mechanical Home key, which has got another nice bonus. In the upper part of the front panel, you can see the earpiece grille, sensors, a peephole of the front camera and the manufacturer's logo, which is also not without in the flagship.

The back cover is made of plastic imitating leather. The side edges are bent, so the smartphone is comfortable to hold in your hand. The corners are also rounded, which also contributes to the comfort when using the phone. The rear panel contains the main camera lens, flash, earpiece grill, heart rate sensor and company logo and the inscription "DOUS", which means that the hero of the review supports work with two SIM cards.

It is important to know

The cover is removable. Under it you can see the battery, two slots for installing SIM cards, as well as a separate slot for a MicroSD memory card, with which you can increase 16 GB of internal memory.

The smartphone has got metal frames. They cool your hand pleasantly. The developers have separated the hardware volume and power on / off keys on different side panels. So, the volume rocker is located on the left side, and the power button is on the right. Both elements protrude above the planes of the side faces and are distinguished by a tight move. The first feature allows you to quickly find the keys, and the second minimizes the risk of mistaken keystrokes.

At the bottom there is a Micro-USB port without USB OTG support. This is done so that the functionality of the device does not overlap with the capabilities of other phones of the same price category. In addition to the Micro-USB connector, there is a hole for the spoken microphone at the bottom end. On the upper edge, the manufacturer has placed a 3.5 mm audio output and an infrared port. None of the connectors have got protective caps.

Display

Review hero received . And this decision is not a surprise to anyone. All phones of the Korean company are equipped with this matrix. The screen resolution is 1280x720 px, and its diagonal is 4.5 inches. With this specification, the pixel density is 326 dpi. The screen is located in the center of the front panel. The side bezels are 4.5 mm, while the top and bottom bezels are 1.6 cm. AnTuTu shows that the sensor responds to ten touches at the same time.

Will be useful

The presence of a light sensor enables the automatic brightness adjustment mode. It works quickly, but functions correctly.

In the settings, you can activate the control mode with gloves. Its disadvantage lies in the excessively high sensitivity of the sensor, due to which erroneous clicks cannot be avoided. Thanks to the proximity sensor during a phone call, the display dims and is activated when the smartphone is brought to the ear and after moving away from it, respectively.

Super AMOLED with a screen resolution of 1280x720 px and a diagonal of 4.5 inches.

The range of brightness is sufficient both for using the phone on a sunny day and for operating at night. When exposed to direct sunlight, the picture fades, but remains readable. Practically all information is easy to parse. In conditions of complete darkness, the minimum brightness threshold is sufficient for comfortable work with the device.

The screen has wide viewing angles. The OLED display is characterized by true blacks, white uniformity and high levels of brightness when the gaze deviates from the perpendicular.

Software

The smartphone received Android 4.4.2. At the time of the release of the device, Google had already created a newer version of the green robot, but the developers decided to leave the version of "not the first freshness" to their brainchild. The internal interface is represented by the proprietary TouchWiz shell. It is distinguished by its simplicity of design. The settings menu has been redesigned. All elements are arranged in a matrix, not a list.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini received Android 4.4.2.

In addition to standard applications, the developers have added several proprietary programs. This is an application store called Samsung App, and the S Voice recorder, and the S Health application, which allows you to monitor your health. Three application icons are fixed at the bottom of the desktop: Phone, Messages, Google Chrome. There is also an icon for calling the program menu. There is a place for 10 icons in the Google folder:

  • Play Market.
  • Gmail email.
  • Cards.
  • YouTube.
  • Games.
  • Press.
  • Disk.
  • Music.
  • Google Keep.
  • Hangouts.

note

In the menu of running applications, you can close all programs at once. From there, you can quickly go to the phone manager. About 20 elements can be placed in the notification curtain, among which there are typical Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, data transfer, airplane mode and others. There is also a brightness slider on the panel.

Sound

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini delivers high sound quality. The smartphone received a loud speaker. The sound is clear, bright and rich. Low frequencies are also reproduced. At maximum volume settings, the sound is clear and without wheezing. The speaker is also of high quality. During telephone conversations, the voice of the interlocutor is not distorted, and the volume reserve is sufficient to hear everything said in a noisy environment.

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini delivers high sound quality.

Performance

The hero of the review is available in several modifications. The hardware platform of the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini may be based on a cheap and slower Snapdragon 400 processor or a similar chipset of Samsung's own production, which is called Exynos.

1.5 GB of RAM does not allow keeping a large number of applications in the background without unloading them from memory. In addition, this volume is not enough to quickly and smoothly switch between demanding games, since about 500 MB are available.

There are no problems with games. Real Racing and Modern Combat 4 work without brakes. but slight slowdowns can occur due to the fact that the TouchWiz shell itself is resource-intensive.

The actual performance of the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini corresponds to the characteristics of the device and the results shown by the reviewer in synthetic tests. So, in Vellamo, the phone scores 760, 100, 1570 and 1540 points in tests of hardware, cores, Google Chrome and the built-in Internet browser, respectively.

In AnTuTu, the device scores slightly over 19 thousand points. This is about the same as the mini version of the Galaxy S4 smartphone showed. gains 17 thousand points. Both competitors are also powered by Snapdragon 400.

GeekBench awards the hero of the review 390 and 1270 points in the test of one and all cores, respectively. The predecessor in this benchmark gains 640/1100 points, and the HTC smartphone - 345 in Single-Core and 1135 in Multi-Core.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini A compact smartphone in a slim, elegant body with true flagship features, with support for high-speed 4G LTE networks and IP67 certification, which provides reliable protection for your phone from sand, dust, moisture and rain. The main characteristics of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini are a powerful quad-core 1.4 GHz processor, the latest Android 4.4 KitKat operating system and a large 4.5-inch HD Super AMOLED display. For reliable protection of personal information and files, Samsung GALAXY S5 mini is equipped with a fingerprint sensor built into the "Home" button, to unlock the smartphone, you just need to move your finger, you can also activate the wrong mode on the phone. For shooting photos and videos, Samsung Galaxy S5 mini users have a good 8 megapixel camera that captures excellent quality photos and excellent high quality video in FHD format with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels at a rate of 30 fps. Also, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is equipped with an additional front-facing 2.1 megapixel camera capable of not only taking good pictures, but also allowing you to communicate via video communication via Skype, Mailagent and other similar applications. What did not like

i don't see it in 2 days

What we liked

took for 13 rubles less than s4 mini

What did not like

It recognizes fingerprints every other time, it does not work at all in the rain. For about 5 minutes I tried to unblock it. The battery just melts, in 30 minutes I killed the battery from 70% to 0%, just lazy through the settings, trying to figure out this horror. The design is poor. A bunch of functions that are unnecessary, asks a lot of questions. Very difficult to use, incomprehensible menu. Inconvenient location of the off key, there is no way to switch to silent mode instantly without looking at the screen.

What we liked

What did not like

What we liked

What did not like

Price and battery, a lot has been said about that.

What we liked

modern telephone. A planned product from a brand, just because it was supposed to be released.

What did not like

in antutu scored less points than s4 mini (((, so 4

What we liked

functionality, fits well in the hand, 4g

What did not like

1) There is no radio (though I never used it). 2) There is no code key in the "notes". It would seem a trifle, but a sensitive flaw. I downloaded a similar program, but it's still not that. 3) A navigator without turning on geodata (GPS) and without an Internet connection is not able to determine my position. Although in Ace II it shows without all this.

What we liked

1) A sudden drop in price from 510 (January 8th) to $ 380 (January 9th). Which prompted me to accelerate the purchase of this unit. 2) After Ace II (very good but outdated) high processor speed. 3) juicy screen, beautiful photos and everything else ... Still, the model and OS are fresher. Voice command taking pictures. 4) Cardioindicator of heart rate. 5) The battery holds well. 6) Exterior design, and a beautiful back cover. A good location of the nickel-plated piping, which looks very nice.

What did not like

Cheap, no packaging. Everything is clear that the best product at the best price, but we really shouldn't wrap it up in a newspaper.
On the 2nd day, the USB cable and charging broke. had to completely look for alternative chargers.

What we liked

Great phone. No complaints. Very lightweight. Comfortable. The impressions from use are positive.

What did not like

Dofiga - the first thing that killed the impression was the absence of ANY navigation software. Only googel cards that just go online. Everything else - buy it, even MAPS.ME preinstalled on many smarts
There is no off-line navigation, and in the Russian Federation there is not a lot of Internet where.
Second, the phone is geared towards Google, most of the buttons lead to Google, where you need to open an account, download everything from there. In fact, this is not software, but the addresses of links to googel services.
The third is the brake, for the sake of saving the battery, the percentage is strangled. Movies that were great on the cheap HTC 8S slow down every 4-5 seconds!

What we liked

Bright, compact. waterproof

What did not like

The sound of the external speaker is terrible, the camera is better than on my past. The display, although Amoledov, is dim after sleepyhead. During the week I decided to surf the Internet, watch clips, etc., and he rebooted himself. The battery is a quiet horror, only saves extra energy saving.Tach.vis shell, but I'm sitting now on "google start"

What we liked

In general, no, if only the protection from moisture and dust and the case is nice.

What did not like

Max. energy savings from the declared 10 days worked only 4,
very unapproved dialer after HTC,
camera shutter sound is not muted only at master volume.
a couple of times after turning on the flashlight, it did not turn off only after a reboot,
in the korman is not audible.
camera.

What we liked

size, powerful processor, remote control, non-slip in hand, alarm

Another mini-version of the flagship, with a significantly weaker hardware platform

Against the background of Samsung's flagship smartphones presented one after another, of which the Korean company always supports several at once and which have recently been under the very scrutiny of the public, the release of the next mini-version went somehow quietly and without much fuss. A smartphone called Samsung Galaxy S5 mini replaced the Galaxy S4 mini in the same way as its "ideological inspirer", the true flagship Galaxy S5 in the new season replaced its predecessor Galaxy S4.

And just like last time, the model with the prefix "mini" in the name has very little in common with its "big brother" in technical and hardware terms, but it exactly copies the appearance of the flagship and adopts most of the software developments, which are user interface of Samsung devices is traditionally the maximum number. A smaller "copy" called Galaxy S5 mini received a smaller display and resolution, a smaller battery, but, what is most sad, according to the already bad tradition - a much weaker hardware base, which does not fit at all with the considerable price at which the device is offered to the end user. Samsung artificially degrades the hardware characteristics of a smartphone that is good in many respects, while competitors from Sony offer the market their compact modification of the Xperia Z3 Compact on the most powerful flagship platform for a similar price. The next mini-version of the Koreans did not add at all in terms of hardware compared to its predecessor, and besides, it is twice as slow as the real flagship in performance.

Appearance and usability

It should start, perhaps, with the fact that the next miniature model, unlike such new products as Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Note 4, has not received a new design, which is still unusual for Samsung, with a metal acute-angled frame. No, the Galaxy S5 mini smart phone came out like two peas in a pod on its "ancestor" - Samsung Galaxy S5, which is quite logical. The novelty borrowed from its progenitor the same "upholstery" under the perforated leather on the back cover, and the same thick, thick, shiny bezel, made not of real metal, but of plastic, which visually increases the dimensions of the device and, in general, does not decorate too much an already discreet design. I did not receive a smartphone and a new hardware platform: despite the fact that Samsung has already learned how to make SoC for itself using the new 20 nm process technology, the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 platform is installed here, on which the previous mini-version of the Galaxy S4 mini worked. But the new "mini" received a fingerprint scanner, infrared transmitter and a heart rate sensor - exactly like a real flagship.

As for the prefix “mini” in the name of the model we are reviewing today, it’s just a “figure of speech”, because in fact the device does not differ in particularly compact dimensions in comparison with other modern smartphones, but has quite ordinary average dimensions. And nevertheless, the smartphone was given the flagship name with the prefix "mini", so that there was no doubt about the continuity between these two models, even though they are far from each other in terms of their technical and hardware capabilities.

So, outwardly, the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini smartphone is an exact copy of the flagship S5 except for the size. Due to the reduced dimensions, the hero of the review fits much more comfortably in the hand and is held securely enough due to the "oilcloth" surface of the back cover. The device is not heavy, it will be easily carried in the pockets of clothes, including a shirt or trousers. In contrast to full-size modern tablet phones with screen sizes of 5 inches or more, the Galaxy S5 mini can really be called a miniature mobile device with some stretch.

The back cover of the new smartphone, like that of the flagship S5, is removable; under it, there are slots for a memory card and SIM-cards. In this case, it supports work with two SIM-cards of the Micro-SIM format, so there are as many as three slots under the cover, and in the name of the model you can find an additional prefix "Duos", although the range of the Korean company also has a modification with one SIM-card ( model SM-G800F).

In addition, we can note the fact that the lid on the inner surface has a glued rubber gasket, which serves to protect against water ingress inside the case, since Samsung is positioning its new Galaxy S series models as dust and moisture resistant. And even confirms this with certificates of conformity in accordance with the IP67 standard, which implies the possibility, albeit a short-term, but complete immersion of the smartphone in water to a depth of one meter.

However, the sad experience of communicating with the "protected" Samsung Galaxy S4 Active once discouraged us from any desire to continue water experiments with the smartphones of the Korean company. And the creators themselves somehow never mention the word "dive" - \u200b\u200bon the corporate website, unlike the colorful photographs of underwater divers with Sony smartphones that are really capable of withstanding such dives, only a girl is depicted fleeing from the raindrops under an umbrella.

In combination with the signature under the girl's photo (“Certification according to the international standard IP67 means reliable protection of the phone from moisture, rain, sand and dust”), it looks like a statement that the company itself does not really believe in the ability of their smartphones to withstand full immersion in water according to the specified degree of protection IP67. By the way, unlike the same Galaxy S5, here none of the connectors is covered with a protective cover, which further exacerbates suspicions.

On the outside of the back cover there is a familiar set of elements: a square camera window, and under it is an LED flash peephole, combined with a heart rate sensor, which first appeared on the original Galaxy S5 a few months earlier. By placing your finger on this small window on the back of your smartphone, you can not only measure your heart rate, but also estimate the level of stress your body is experiencing at the moment. All this is possible with the pre-installed S Health app.

The main speaker grill is cut right here, in the back cover. To raise the case above the table surface, a twig slightly curved outward is provided, and due to it, the sound of a smartphone lying on a solid surface is slightly muffled.

The front side with an oblong mechanical key under the screen looks exactly like other modern mobile products of the Korean company. The front panel is completely covered with a scratch-resistant protective glass. In the upper part of the glass there is a slit for the shiny metal grille of the earpiece, the eyes of the sensors and the front camera are visible next to it. There is also an embedded LED status indicator, which shines with a large, but dim point when the screen is off and signals the charging status and incoming messages. There is a special item in the settings menu to adjust the indicator.

The most recognizable element of all top-end Samsung smartphones, the elongated mechanical key under the screen, remains in its place, having received the additional functionality of the fingerprint scanner. You need to swipe your finger over the scanner, a simple application is not enough here. The touch buttons next to the mechanical ones have a bright white backlight with a configurable glow time, for this in the settings in the "Display" section there is also a special item.

The side hardware keys for blocking and volume are also made of metal, they are not large, but they have a distinct response and are well felt blindly, so there are no complaints about the convenience of their control.

As for the connectors, there are traditionally two of them: the 3.5 mm audio output is located on the upper end, next to the eye of the IR transmitter, and at the bottom, without any plugs, there is a Micro-USB connector, which does not even support connection in USB OTG modes and MHL. This is another example of the developers' efforts to artificially degrade the functionality of the smartphone, so that it does not overlap in capabilities with the same Galaxy Alpha, for example (which has USB OTG support).

The smartphone is delivered to the Russian market in four different color versions: a choice of white, black, blue and gold cases. The connectors of the device are not covered with dummy plugs in any of the variants. Despite this, among the characteristics of all devices is protection against water and dust according to the IP67 standard. There is no strap attachment.

Screen

The Samsung Galaxy S5 mini is equipped with a Super AMOLED sensor matrix. The screen dimensions are 56 × 99 mm, the diagonal is 4.5 inches, the resolution is 1280 × 720 pixels. The pixel density is 326 ppi.

Outside, the screen is covered with a protective glass. The thickness of the side frames from the edge of the screen to the edge of the case is at least 4.5 mm, the frames are not at all narrow, but this parameter has never been listed among the iconic Samsung products, especially when you consider that the dimensions of the smartphone are visually increased here due to the presence branded "blown" metallized bezel that runs along the entire perimeter of the case. The bezels at the top and bottom of the screen are 16 mm wide.

The brightness of the display can be adjusted manually, or you can use automatic adjustment. The multitouch technology here allows you to process up to 10 simultaneous touches. The screen can be operated with gloved hands, and at the same time it becomes more sensitive to any touch, so in the settings prudently left the option to disable this function. The smartphone also has a proximity sensor that locks the screen when you bring the smartphone to your ear.

Alexey Kudryavtsev, editor of the “Monitors” and “Projectors and TV” sections, carried out a detailed examination using measuring instruments. Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen may be slightly worse than that of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the turned off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - Samsung Galaxy S5 mini, then they can be distinguished by their size):

The screen of the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini is slightly lighter (brightness in the photos is 130 versus 127 for the Nexus 7) and has a slightly pronounced shade. Note that the reflection from bright objects in the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini screen has a pale bluish halo that is slightly more elongated across the screen. The doubling of reflected objects in the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen. Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass / air) with very different refractive indices, screens without an air gap look better in conditions of strong ambient light, but their repair in the case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. The outer surface of the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini screen has a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, noticeably better than that of the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are much easier to remove, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

When the white field was displayed on the full screen and with manual brightness control, its maximum value was 340 cd / m², the minimum was 2 cd / m². You also need to take into account the fact that in this case the smaller the white area on the screen, the lighter it is, that is, the actual maximum brightness of the white areas will almost always be higher than the specified value. For example, when displaying white on half of the screen, the maximum brightness with manual adjustment rises to 350 cd / m². As a result, readability in the daytime in the sun should be at a fairly good level. The reduced brightness level allows you to use the device without any problems even in complete darkness. Automatic brightness control works according to the light sensor (it is located to the right of the slot of the front speaker). Adjustments can be made to how this function works by moving the setting slider from -5 to +5 units. Further, for three conditions, we give the screen brightness values \u200b\u200bfor three values \u200b\u200bof this setting - for −5, 0, and +5. In complete darkness in automatic mode, the brightness decreases to 3, 8 and 12 cd / m², respectively (slightly dark), in an office illuminated with artificial light (about 400 lux), the brightness is set to 90, 150 and 255 cd / m² (normal), in in a brightly lit environment (corresponds to a bright day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or slightly more) - increases to 460 cd / m² regardless of the position of the slider. The latter value is higher than the maximum with manual adjustment - readability in the sun is higher. In general, the result of the automatic brightness control function is as expected. When the brightness decreases, modulation appears with a frequency of 240 Hz. The figure below shows the dependence of brightness (vertical axis) on time (horizontal axis) for several values \u200b\u200bof brightness adjustment:

It can be seen that modulation is practically absent at the maximum and close to it brightness, but as the brightness decreases, modulation appears, its relative amplitude increases, and the duty cycle decreases. Therefore, for example, up to a brightness of 75% (according to the adjustment slider) inclusive, there is no image flickering, but at least 50% and below it can already be seen in the test for the presence of a stroboscopic effect or simply with fast eye movement. Depending on individual sensitivity, such flickering can cause increased fatigue.

This screen uses a Super AMOLED matrix - an active matrix on organic light-emitting diodes. A full color image is created using subpixels of three colors - red (R), green (G) and blue (B), but there are twice as many green subpixels, which can be referred to as RGBG. This is confirmed by a fragment of a micrograph:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of photomicrographs of screens used in mobile technology.

In the fragment above, you can count 4 green subpixels, 2 red (4 halves) and 2 blue (1 whole and 4 quarters), while repeating these fragments, you can lay out the entire screen without gaps and overlaps. For such matrices, Samsung has introduced the name PenTile RGBG. The manufacturer considers the screen resolution for green subpixels, for the other two it will be twice as low. The arrangement and shape of the subpixels in this variant is the same as in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and some other newer Samsung devices with AMOLED screens. This PenTile RGBG version is better than the old one with red squares, blue rectangles and green subpixel stripes. However, some uneven contrast borders and other artifacts are still present.

The screen has excellent viewing angles. True, when deviated even at small angles, the white color acquires a very light blue-green tint, but the black color remains simply black at any angle. It is so black that the contrast setting is not applicable in this case. When viewed from perpendicular view, the uniformity of the white field is excellent. For comparison, here are the photos on which the screens of the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini (profile Cinema) and the second comparison participant, identical images are displayed, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m2, and the color balance on the camera was forcedly switched to 6500 K. White field:

Note the excellent uniformity of brightness and color tone of the white field (sometimes a slight moire appears - an artifact of shooting, not of the screen). And the test picture (profile Cinema):

Color reproduction is good - however, the color balance of the screens is noticeably different, and the colors of the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini are slightly more saturated. This is true for the profile Cinema, there are five of them:

Moreover, in the profile Optimize display, apparently, some kind of color rendition adjustment is performed depending on the ambient lighting and, perhaps, the nature of the image:

But we have not tested this functionality.

Let's compare all the profiles (to change the picture, click on it):

Adaptive display:

Optimize display - color saturation is high, but skin tones are slightly affected. Dynamic - saturation, contrast and color contrast are high, the skin is excessively reddish. Standard - an intermediate option between the previous two profiles. Professional photography - saturation is high, but the contrast and color contrast are normal, the skin is excessively reddish. Cinema - the lowest color saturation.

Now let's look at the display at an angle of about 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen (again the profile Cinema). White box:

The brightness at an angle on both screens has noticeably decreased (to avoid severe darkening, the shutter speed was increased by 2.66 times compared to the previous two photos), but in the case of Samsung, the drop in brightness is much less pronounced. As a result, with formally the same brightness, the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini's screen visually looks much brighter (in comparison with LCD screens), since you often have to look at the screen of a mobile device at least from a slight angle. And the test picture:

It can be seen that the colors have not changed much on both screens, and the brightness at the Samsung angle is noticeably higher. The switching of the state of the matrix elements is performed almost instantly, but at the turn-on front there may be a step with a width of 16.7 ms (which corresponds to a screen refresh rate of 60 Hz). For example, this is how the dependence of brightness on time looks like when switching from black to white and vice versa:

In some conditions, the presence of such a step can lead to trails trailing behind moving objects, but in normal use these artifacts are difficult to see. Quite the opposite - dynamic scenes in films on OLED screens are distinguished by high definition and even some "jerky" movements.

If one of the four profiles is selected, except for the profile Dynamic, built on 32 points with equal intervals by the numerical value of the shade of gray, the gamma curve did not reveal any blockage either in highlights or in shadows, and the exponent of the approximating power function is 2.25-2.26, which is close to the standard value of 2.2 , while the real gamma curve deviates very little from the power dependence (the captions in parentheses show the exponent of the approximating power function and the coefficient of determination):

For profile Dynamic The gamma curve has a slightly S-shaped character, which increases the apparent contrast of the image, but in the shadows, the shades are still distinguishable.

Recall that in the case of OLED screens, the brightness of image fragments dynamically changes in accordance with the nature of the displayed image - it decreases for generally light images. As a result, the obtained dependence of brightness on the hue (gamma curve), most likely, does not correspond a little to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out with sequential output of shades of gray on almost the entire screen. This dynamic picture is enhanced when the option is selected. Auto tuning screen brightness... In this case, on the graph of the dependence of brightness (vertical axis) on time (horizontal axis), when passing from black to white and back, a falling section appears, that is, the brightness of the white field after 333 ms (20 screen refresh cycles) begins to decrease, which can be seen in the given above the chart.

The color gamut in the case of the three profiles is very wide:

When choosing a profile Professional photography coverage is compressed to Adobe RGB boundaries:

When choosing a profile Cinema coverage is further compressed, almost to the borders of sRGB:

Without correction, the spectra of the components are very well separated:

In case of a profile Cinema with maximum correction, the color components are already noticeably mixed with each other:

Note that normal sRGB-optimized images appear unnaturally saturated on screens with wide color gamut without proper color correction. Hence the recommendation - in most cases, watching movies, photos and everything natural is better when choosing a profile Cinema, and only if the photo was taken on the Adobe RGB setting, it makes sense to switch the profile to Professional photography.

The balance of shades on the gray scale is imperfect. As follows from the graphs below, profiles are divided into two groups - with and without explicit color balance correction. Color temperature in profiles Professional photography and Cinema is close to 6500 K, in the remaining three - above 6500 K, while this parameter does not change very much in a significant section of the gray scale. The deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) remains below 10 units for most of the gray scale, but towards darker shades this parameter increases, which is not very good:

(In most cases, the darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

Let's summarize. The screen has a sufficiently high maximum brightness and has good anti-reflective properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. It is permissible (and in bright light it is simply necessary) to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works quite adequately. The specific advantages of the screen include a very good oleophobic coating. At the same time, let's recall the general advantages of OLED screens: true black color (if nothing is reflected in the screen), excellent uniformity of the white field, noticeably less than that of LCDs, a drop in image brightness when viewed from an angle. The disadvantages include modulation of the screen brightness at low brightness values. Users who are particularly sensitive to flicker may experience fatigue as a result. However, the overall screen quality is very high.

Sound

In terms of sound, there are no complaints about the smartphone. Samsung Galaxy S5 mini emits a surprisingly loud sound for its size, clear in the entire frequency spectrum, thick and bass, low frequencies in abundance. At the maximum volume level, the speaker does not wheeze, the sound remains clear. The speaker also clearly conveys all the intonations and timbre of the voice, the interlocutor's speech is recognized confidently, telephone conversations are comfortable. To summarize, it is safe to say that in terms of sound implementation, the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini outperforms the Galaxy Alpha.

For playing melodies, a proprietary player with the maximum number of settings is used as standard. All sound effects are combined with a technology called SoundAlive - although some of them are available only with connected headphones. The same goes for the sound optimization function. There are a lot of various virtual effects, they are combined here into a grid of squares, you can experiment for a very long time.

FM-radio is traditionally absent in the standard configuration of the smartphone, there is a dictaphone, but, unlike the flagship brothers, its functionality is limited to the usual voice recording mode, extended Meeting or Conversation modes are not provided here.

The main rear camera has an 8 megapixel CMOS matrix. The camera is equipped with autofocus and LED flash, it is quite simple in its capabilities, everything is at the level of previous years. There is no smart optical stabilization (Smart OIS) or selective focus mode for blurring the background, there is no slow-motion or fast-motion video recording, and there is no possibility to shoot video in 4K or at 60 fps. In the settings, in addition to the main mode, there are standard modes of panoramic shooting, in motion, retouching and HDR (here it is called “rich tones”), but you can download and use additional modes using the proprietary service. The settings menu itself is clear and intuitive, divided into equivalent cells, each of which is always visible and interactive. In addition, each of the cells can be pulled up and made into a shortcut for quick access in a separate top line. The drawing of the icons is clear, everything is perfectly visible even in the brightest sunlight, and in general the implementation of the camera control menu in the latest Samsung devices is one of the best on the market.

The camera can shoot video in a maximum resolution of 1080p at 30 fps.

  • Movie # 1 (35 MB, 1920 × 1080, 1080p, 30 fps)
  • Movie # 2 (51 MB, 1920 × 1080, 1080p, 30 fps)

When shooting at maximum resolution, the photos are 3264 × 2448 pixels in size. Below are sample photos with our quality comments.

The strong soapiness is swept up, spoiling the details. Sharping can be seen on the wires.

In general, the sharpness is not bad, but the soapiness does not disappear.

With close-ups, the situation is a little better, but not always.

Sometimes the camera succeeds in close-ups and macro photography, but it is far from perfect.

The work of the noise control is clearly visible when the lighting is insufficient for the camera, which brings the very soapiness to the image.

The camera copes well with large text. With small ones it will be worse if you do not highlight.

A slight improvement in lighting makes your shots noticeably different. Decent sharpness across the field and according to plans.

Another example of pretty good sharpness.

The camera is clearly not a flagship - as, indeed, the device itself. Is it possible that the manufacturer is resting on the children of mini-versions of flagships?

Judging by the noticeable soapiness of the pictures in low light, the sensor makes a lot of noise, and the noise reduction is diligently hiding it. However, with a slight improvement in lighting, the pictures can already be called good. The camera has practically no problems with optics, but not everything is smooth with the program. Focus is sometimes wrong, especially when shooting close-ups and macro. Often, shots are blurry due to relatively slow shutter speeds (1/33 second). All this is aggravated by a noisy sensor, which does not allow the camera to shoot at high sensitivity values, and, as a result, noise reduction.

In general, the camera still cannot be called bad (however, Samsung relaxed and stopped paying due attention to cameras, and we just started praising them ...), since it does its job a little better than average and is quite suitable for documentary shooting, especially in good lighting.

Telephone part and communications

The smartphone works standardly in modern 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA networks. There is also a version of the device with one SIM-card (SM-G800F), which has support for the fourth generation networks (LTE) and NFC used in Russia.

In general, the network capabilities of the smartphone are decent, but no frills. In the presence of support for Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11a / b / g / n (2.4 and 5 GHz). But at the same time, unlike the flagship brothers, including the Galaxy Alpha, there is no 2 × 2 MIMO mode, no support for the Wi-Fi 802.11ac standard, no ANT + and DLNA. Also, it does not support connecting external devices to the USB port in OTG mode, and there is no MHL support either. As a standard, you can organize a wireless access point via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. At home, with an Asus RT-N16 router as an access point, the hero of the review demonstrated a connection speed of 46 Mbit / s.

The navigation module works with both GPS and the domestic Glonass system, and also sees the satellites of the Chinese Beidou.

Spontaneous reboots / shutdowns during testing were not observed, as well as slowdowns or freezes of the system. The screen of the smartphone is not one of the largest, in the Russian layout the drawing of letters is quite small, however, erroneous clicks were not observed. The keyboard does not have a dedicated top row with numbers - you will have to switch the layout every time, moreover, by side scrolling on the space bar - there is no dedicated button for this purpose. The phone application supports Smart Dial, that is, when dialing a phone number, a search is immediately carried out in contacts.

The smartphone supports work with two SIM-cards, and in general, working with them in the menu is organized according to the familiar principle: you can designate any of the SIM-cards as the main one for organizing voice calls, transferring data or sending SMS messages. When dialing a number, you can also select the desired card by calling the context menu from the notification menu. A SIM card can work with 3G networks in any slot, however, only one of the cards can work in this mode at the same time (the second will work only in 2G). There is only one radio module installed in the device, however, the so-called "Active mode", which is standard for all Samsung Duos models, is implemented here, which allows you to receive a call to the second SIM-card when the first one is busy. This is done by setting up cross-forwarding of the numbers of both cards to each other. Dual SIM active mode relies on mobile operator services such as call forwarding and call waiting / holding. After turning on the mode, the device prompts you to manually enter two numbers that will be forwarded to each other. For the function to work, the call forwarding service must be activated on both SIM cards. You can read more about the implementation of the "Active Mode".

OS and software

The operating system in the smartphone is not the latest version of the Google Android 4.4.2 KitKat software platform, on top of which the proprietary TouchWiz graphical user interface is traditionally installed. The internal arrangement of the shell, all the menus, settings items and pop-up contextual submenus - everything is familiar and very similar to what is implemented in the same Galaxy S5 or Galaxy Alpha. Actually, only the capabilities of the software interface and the external similarity allow Samsung marketers to make loud statements, like: "Being created on the basis of the flagship model Samsung Galaxy S5, it inherited not only the design, but also an excellent set of features." On the hardware side, as well as on the technical side, there is an insurmountable generation gap between these two models. The mini version has a much weaker platform (and, as a consequence, performance), a lower quality camera, less voluminous battery, lower screen resolution, etc. But as far as the “feature set” is concerned, there is indeed a continuity here. Galaxy S5 mini not only received a proprietary interface from the "big brother" with a lot of additional settings, support for gestures, "black and white" energy-saving mode, etc., but also equipped with a fingerprint scanner built into the front button, an infrared transmitter on the top end as well as a heart rate sensor located on the back. With the help of this sensor, a program for tracking your own health called S Health can measure your heart rate and stress resistance. A fingerprint scanner is used to lock the device, and a virtual remote control functions on the basis of an IR transmitter to control various household appliances. The hardware and software complex of the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini is really extremely rich, and in this regard, the smartphone can give odds not only to competing solutions of the corresponding level, but even to many top flagship smartphones located at a higher hierarchical level.

Performance

The hardware platform of the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini is based on the well-known Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 single-chip system (SoC). The central processor here has 4 ARM Cortex-A7 cores operating at 1.4 GHz (SoC production technology - 28 nm). The RAM in the device is 1.5 GB (this is perhaps the only noticeable difference between the Galaxy S5 mini and its classmates), and the storage available to the user to upload their own files is about 11 GB out of the nominally designated 16 GB - the rest went to the system itself and applications ... The memory can be expanded with microSD cards up to 64 GB. But connecting a flash drive via an OTG adapter will not work here, and this device differs not only from the older models in Samsung's arsenal (Galaxy Alpha, etc.), but also from direct competitors such as HTC One mini 2.

It is simply pointless to compare the mini version with the original flagship Galaxy S5, because even in comparison with the Galaxy Alpha, the hero of the review lags behind almost twice. In this regard, by the way, the Galaxy Alpha generally has a significant advantage: the new technical process (20 nm) of the Exynos 5 Octa 5430 SoC, installed in the Galaxy Alpha, made it possible to achieve not only the highest performance, but also impressive energy savings, which cannot be said about Galaxy S5 mini platform with its Cortex-A7 cores.

There is not the slightest opportunity for the hero of the review to compete with a modern rival from the Japanese camp: the work of the compact model Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is based on the most productive hardware platform Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 to date, which is not like the SoC on which the Korean mini-flagship operates. The Japanese were not stingy to install the most powerful platform in their compact version, and the price of the device ended up being not much higher.

It is interesting to compare the performance of the S5 mini with the previous mini-version of Samsung, the S4 mini, but due to the fact that the creators of AnTuTu are constantly updating their benchmark, we cannot do this directly, since the previous model was tested in a different version of the test. Nevertheless, the rest of the benchmarks did not reveal the superiority of the new mini-flagship over the previous one, which is completely unsurprising, because both models are built on similar hardware platforms of the same level, so there is certainly no progress in this regard.

In general, according to the test results, the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini smartphone can be safely attributed to the category of devices with an average performance - about 20K in the AnTuTu test, while the maximum level of top platforms in AnTuTu now reaches 40K and higher. At the moment, the hardware power of this smartphone should be enough to perform most of the tasks that not the most demanding games or applications from the Google Play Store can deliver.

Testing in MobileXPRT as well as the latest versions of AnTuTu and GeekBench 3:

All the results obtained by us when testing the smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks, we have summarized for convenience in tables. Several other devices from different segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers). Unfortunately, within the framework of one comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions of benchmarks, therefore, many worthy and relevant models remain "behind the scenes" - due to the fact that they once passed the "obstacle course" on previous versions of test programs.

Testing the graphics subsystem in the 3DMark cross-platform test, as well asin the game test Epic Citadel, and Bonsai Benchmark:

When testing in 3DMark for the highest performing smartphones, it is now possible to run the application in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (which can cause the speed to rise above 60 fps).

Browser cross-platform tests:

As for benchmarks for evaluating the speed of the javascript engine, you should always make allowances for the fact that the results in them significantly depend on the browser in which they are launched, so that the comparison can be truly correct only on the same OS and browsers, and this possibility is available when testing not always. In the case of Android OS, we always try to use Google Chrome.

Video playback

To test the "omnivorous" video playback (including support for various codecs, containers and special features, such as subtitles), we used the most common formats, which make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that for mobile devices it is important to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, do not expect a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it.

According to the test results, the subject was not equipped with all the decoders necessary for full playback of most of the most common files on the network, in this case sound files. To play them successfully, you will have to resort to using a third-party player - for example, MX Player. True, in it you will first have to change the settings, switching from hardware decoding to software or to a new mode called Hardware + (not supported by all smartphones), only then the sound will appear. All results are tabulated.

¹ the sound in MX Video Player was only played after switching to software decoding or to a new mode Hardware +; the standard player does not have such a setting

We did not find the MHL interface, like Mobility DisplayPort, in this smartphone, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see "Testing methods for video playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)" Red marks indicate possible problems related to the playback of the corresponding files.

According to the criterion for outputting frames, the quality of video files playback on the screen of the device itself is good, since frames (or groups of frames) can be output with more or less uniform intervals of intervals and without frame drops. When playing video files with a resolution of 1280 by 720 (720p) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly along the border of the screen and one to one pixel by pixel. The brightness range displayed on the screen actually corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - in the shadows only a couple of shades merge with black, but in the highlights all gradations of shades are displayed.

Battery life

The lithium-ion battery in the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini has a capacity of 2100 mAh. This is more than the miniature Samsung Galaxy Alpha with its 1860 mAh, however, the Samsung Galaxy Alpha has a completely redesigned SoC, made using a new 20 nm process technology, which not only allowed it to achieve an increase in performance, but also made the hardware system work more economical. In contrast, the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini runs on an older 28nm technology platform, so despite the larger battery, the smartphone showed a shorter battery life, although the numbers are generally comparable. As a result, the battery life of the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini is quite average and is in line with the competing mini-models of the modern mobile market.

Continuous reading in the FBReader program (with a standard, light theme) at the minimum comfortable brightness level (the brightness was set to 100 cd / m2) lasted almost 13.5 hours until the battery was fully discharged, and with continuous high quality video playback (720p) with the device lasted 9 hours with the same brightness level through the home Wi-Fi network. In 3D games, the smartphone worked for about 4 hours.

The smartphone battery charges very quickly - a full battery charge takes less than two hours.

Outcome

As for the cost of the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini, its price for our market has already been determined, the smartphone is officially sold in retail chains at a price of about 20 thousand rubles. And this, perhaps, is one of the few negative points when considering the new product comprehensively. Let the smartphone as a whole came out and not very attractive in appearance and not very powerful in terms of hardware, but it, like the flagship, is able to offer a proprietary user interface with a lot of additional settings, and in addition to this the same additional functions, such as a fingerprint scanner fingers, infrared and heart rate sensor. Unfortunately, given the high price that the Koreans "break" for their mini-model, the new smartphone is comparable to many top-end devices from less greedy manufacturers, not only in functions, but also in cost.
