Meet the Apple MacBook Pro Retina 15 Mid 2014 - a "tag" with a high screen resolution (2880x1800 pixels) and incredibly powerful stuffing, represented by an Intel Core i7-4870HQ processor and NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M graphics card. Despite the fact that the device appeared on the market for a long time, its stylish appearance and powerful hardware allows this laptop to be one of the best in the multimedia segment. No wonder it made it to our top of the best laptops in 2014, and that says a lot!

Design

The appearance of the MacBook Pro Retina 15 Mid 2014 is identical to its predecessor, which we wrote about earlier - the MacBook Pro 15 Retina. The laptop case is made of a solid aluminum sheet of silver color, in general, nothing new - the design is strict, restrained and obscenely expensive. The lid of the laptop is still decorated with a bitten apple, which is pleasantly highlighted in the dark. The black keypad, hinge and display stand out against the gray body. A fairly large touchpad is located under the keyboard, and a webcam lens is on the upper edge of the display frame.

Apple devices are known for their durability, and this gadget is no exception: its body is sturdy, there is no backlash, no squeaks, no sagging when pressed. Its important advantages are its low weight (2.02 kg) and dimensions (359x247x18 mm).

The bottom is solid, along the perimeter there are four legs that do not allow the device to slide on the surface. For those who are just getting acquainted with Apple laptops, the lack of ventilation grilles on the bottom will seem surprising. However, there is no reason to worry: the manufacturer placed them near the hinge, where it is not possible to block them, so repairing a MacBook is quite rare.

As always, this is a chic outwardly device that only evokes associations with luxury and success.

Display, sound and webcam

Apple MacBook Pro Retina 15 Mid 2014 display is another story! The 15.4-inch glossy IPS-screen, as before, has a resolution of 2880x1800 dots, while the density of pixels per inch is 220, which in turn gives the user an incredibly clear image. Separately, I would like to note the good indicators of brightness and contrast, the picture looks very rich and realistic. The sRGB color gamut is 95%.

Those who like to work with a laptop on the street can not but rejoice at the anti-glare coating of the screen, which allows you to sufficiently enjoy a high-quality picture. Thanks to the high-quality matrix, the viewing angles also did not disappoint: the image is not distorted from whatever side you look at it, which means that even a large company can watch a movie from a 15-inch display.

For the sound in this laptop, two speakers are responsible, located on the sides of the keyboard. They are hidden under elongated perforated grilles. The sound quality is good news, because it is clear and does not distort even at maximum volume.

Above the screen is a 720p FaceTime HD webcam, which allows chatting on Skype, making video calls on iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or Mac via FaceTime app.

Keyboard and touchpad

The keyboard in the MacBook Pro Retina 15 Mid 2014 is typical of all 13- and 15-inch Apple laptop models. From generation to generation, it does not change outwardly, and therefore it is easily recognizable by many. Let's start with the fact that the keyboard is of the island type, its keys are square and are at a decent distance from each other. Thanks to this, during intensive printing, there is no risk of touching the button located next to it, which significantly saves time and nerves.

Separately, I would like to note the excellent design of the keyboard unit: black buttons on gray aluminum look very advantageous. The buttons are labeled in white. During operation, the substrate does not bend, which is an additional plus in the treasury of the advantages of this keyboard. The main buttons most often used for printing,,,, have a well-shaped elongated shape. As for the arrow block, it is made in the shape of an inverted letter [T], the keys are small, but, again, comfortable.

Of course, there is also a backlight here, which provides as many as 16 levels of brightness. The light sensor is responsible for this, which is triggered when it becomes dark around, respectively, the keys will not be highlighted during the day. The travel of the buttons is long and clear, the response is instant.

There are no buttons above the keyboard, and the laptop's power key is hidden in the top row of function keys.

Under the keyboard, you can see a fairly large clickpad. It is completely smooth to the touch, as it is made of glass, which differs from the touch pads of many other manufacturers. As expected, there are no physical keys. It should be noted the support for multi-touch gestures, including scrolling, dragging, single and double touching, swiping with one, three, four fingers and others. In general, the touchpad is very convenient to use, it is so comfortable.

Performance

That's how imperceptibly we got close, in fact, to what is the significant difference between our MacBook Pro Retina 15 Mid 2014, its predecessor MacBook Pro 15 Retina Late 2013 and an even earlier generation of this laptop just with a Retina prefix. As you might have guessed, we're talking about laptop stuffing, it definitely deserves attention!

So, Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks acts as a pre-installed operating system. This version appeared in 2013, received an updated interface and various improved applications, in a word, it became more functional and even more convenient for work and leisure.

As for the filling, it is represented, first of all, by a quad-core Intel Core i7-4870HQ processor of the Haswell generation. This is one of the most productive solutions at the moment, because its operating frequency starts at 2.5 GHz. Of course, this is not the limit, and thanks to Turbo Boost technology, the frequency can be increased up to 3.7 GHz for laborious tasks, and hyper-Threading technology provides simultaneous processing of eight threads by four cores. The processor is made on a 22 nm process technology, has 6 MB of cache of the 3rd level, and the maximum power consumption is 47 W. However, if you can get a package with a more powerful processor, if you are willing to shell out an additional $ 200 for it. There are also simpler configurations, only in this case you will have to abandon the idea of \u200b\u200bbecoming the owner of a discrete video adapter.

This central processor installed in this laptop is complemented by an integrated Intel Iris Pro Graphics 5200 graphics card. Its clock speed can vary from 200 MHz to 1200 MHz, which is due to Turbo Boost. This chip is notable for the fact that it is endowed with an additional 128 MB eDRAM cache and is much more efficient than other built-in solutions like Intel HD Graphics 4000 or HD Graphics 4600. This graphics supports DirectX 11.1, OpenCL 1.2, OpenGL 4.0, and is also equipped with a decoder for 4K video and fast encoder Quick Sync.

But discrete graphics are not available in all MacBook Pro Retina 15 Mid 2014 trim levels. But we are lucky and we are dealing with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with its own 2 GB of GDDR5 memory. Its frequency is 967 MHz, it is made using a 28 nm process technology, supports DirectX 11 and Shader 5.0. Of course, no one doubts the gaming capabilities of this video card, but for clarity, it still does not hurt to show the results of some games. For example, Titanfall with Full HD resolution will run at 24-27 fps, Metro: Last Light with the same parameters will show 13-15 frames per second.

Another important difference between the new generation of MacBook Pro laptops is 16 GB of DDR3-1600 MHz RAM, and not 8 GB, as it was before. As for the storage of information, this function is "assigned" to solid state drive with a capacity of 512 GB. However, you can opt for a 1TB SSD bundle, if your budget allows, of course.

Ports and communications

All device interfaces are evenly distributed along its edges. On the right side you can see uSB port 3.0, HDMI video output with support for video formats 3840x2160 / 30 and 4096x2160 / 24, as well as an SDXC card reader.

The left side received another USB 3.0 port, two multi-purpose Thunderbolt ports, thanks to which you can connect almost any device to your laptop and transfer data at high speed. By the way, in order to connect to FireWire and Ethernet through these ports, you will have to additionally purchase special adapters. Next to them are the MagSafe charging jack, headphone audio out, and two built-in microphones.

There are no ports or connectors on the front and back. Wireless communications in the laptop are Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11ac.

Battery

The tag has a non-removable lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 8440 mAh (95 Wh). The manufacturer claims that the battery can last up to 8 hours with Wi-Fi turned on. In reality, we have about 20 hours of idle time, high quality video playback at maximum brightness will drain the battery in about 5 hours. In high load mode, the user will have to look for an outlet after about 3 hours. But the results are quite good. The gadget is able to function for a long time without recharging, which means that you can safely take it with you on a business trip and other travels.

New - long forgotten old, this is how you can characterize the Apple MacBook Pro Retina 15 Mid 2014. This laptop is practically no different from its predecessor, except that only the filling is not essential. The device pleases with a 15-inch screen, which demonstrates high image quality: good brightness and contrast, excellent color reproduction, excellent viewing angles, high resolution. Among the advantages is the ergonomic keyboard, which can rightfully be called one of the most comfortable in the world.

Of course, one cannot fail to note the build quality and design that will satisfy the needs of even the most demanding users. The hardware of the gadget deserves special praise, the key role in which is assigned to the Intel Core i7-4870HQ processor and NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M graphics. Thanks to these components, the laptop can handle even very demanding tasks with which it can easily cope.

Perhaps the only drawback of the MacBook Pro Retina 15 Mid 2014 is its cost, which, according to the manufacturer's website, is about $ 2,500 for the reviewed configuration. However, "apple" gadgets have never been cheap, because, as they say, you have to pay for pleasure.
