How to disable the touchpad on a laptop (accidental clicks occur when I work on a laptop with a mouse). Touchpad on a laptop - turning the panel on and off Using function keys

Question from a user

Hello.

Help with touchpad. The fact is that I work on a laptop with a mouse, and in principle I don’t need a touchpad. When I type or do something at the keyboard, I often accidentally touch the touchpad with the surface of my palm and clicks are triggered (for example, text may be highlighted, the cursor may jump, etc.).

How can I turn it off? On my laptop there is no special key on the keyboard, and there is nothing in the mouse settings either. Whine-whine...

Good day!

Yes, such a problem can be annoying. In this article I will try to give several working methods that will help solve your problem. (by the way, I suspect that you do not have drivers installed for the touchpad - that’s why there is nothing in the mouse settings) ...

Ways to disable the touchpad

Method #1: special function key

Many laptops have a special function key that allows you to quickly enable/disable the touchpad (it has a characteristic icon).

I will list the main brands of laptops and give the most common way to disable the touchpad:

  1. ASUS: usually this is a combination of the Fn+F9 (or Fn+F7) buttons. See photo below;
  2. Acer: Fn+F7 (or in mouse properties);
  3. Dell: most often the sensor is disabled in the mouse properties;
  4. MSI: combination Fn+F3;
  5. Lenovo: Fn+F5 or Fn+F8;
  6. HP: Please note that HP laptops use double tap in the left top corner touchpad to disable it (see photo below).
  7. Sony: combination Fn+F1 (laptops of this brand also have their own Control Center, which also has a similar option);
  8. Samsung: in the vast majority of laptops Fn+F5;
  9. Toshiba: most often the combination Fn+F5 (laptops of this brand also have an option to disable the sensor in the mouse properties).

If the function key works, usually a notification always appears on the screen indicating that the sensor has been disabled (see screenshot below).

Method number 2: use mouse properties

If there is no function key, then almost certainly the option to disable the touchpad should be in the mouse settings (or in special software, such as Sony, Dell).

Or, use the methods below.

Method number 3: for Windows 10 - use the settings of touch devices

If you have Windows 10 OS, then there is a special option in the parameters. section responsible for the operation of the touch device.

To open these settings, go to START and click on the "Settings" button.

Next, go to the "Devices/Touchpad" section. Here you can disable it completely or partially (for example, disable the touchpad when connecting a mouse). You can also adjust the cursor and touch speed. See screenshot below.

Method number 4: disable the touchpad in Device Manager

Many devices (including the touchpad) can be disabled through the device manager.

The easiest way to open it (in Windows 7÷10): go to the control panel, and in search bar add the word "Dispatcher". The search results will contain a link to launch it (see screenshot below).

In Device Manager, expand the tab "Mice and other pointing devices" . One of the pointing devices is the touchpad. If it is difficult (impossible) to navigate by name, then turn off each of them one by one until you find the one you need.

Method No. 5: manual option - place a piece of cardboard/paper

Well, the last option is to cut a piece of thick paper (from cardboard, for example) to the size of the touchpad and seal this area with it (without glue! Just carefully pick it up with tape). The method, although clumsy, will allow you to avoid accidental clicks when touching your palms.

Additions are welcome.

That's all, good luck everyone!

Some laptop users may encounter this problem - the touchpad on the laptop is not enabled, or vice versa, you are using a mouse, and the touchpad only interferes with your work.

To enable or disable the touchpad, you must press a certain key combination. On almost all laptops, the first key is Fn, and here is the second one different laptops different.

Laptops Acer– Fn + F7.

Laptops Asus– Fn + F9.

Laptops Lenovo– Fn + F8 (on some models F6)

Laptops Dell– Fn + F5.

Laptops Toshiba– Fn + F9.

Laptops Sony– Fn + F1.

Laptops Samsung– Fn + F5 (on some models F6)

Laptops MSI– Fn + F3.

Laptops Packard Bell– Fn + F6

On others, as well as on some models of these brands, the keys may differ. The required key usually has an icon as shown in the figure below.

If this method did not help, or you do not have the necessary buttons at all, then you can enable or disable the touchpad using Windows.

In order to enable or disable the touchpad using Windows, open Control PanelEquipment and soundDevices and Printers.

Now click right click mouse over the icon with the name of your computer and select Mouse options.

In the window that opens, you need to select the item indicating the internal pointing device, for example, for me it is called ClickPad, for you it may be called differently.

Open this tab and click on the button Turn on(Enable) or Disable(Disable). Save the settings by clicking on the OK button.

The touchpad is a century-old feature, long ago replacing the alternative mouse controls. With it we can completely control our device, be it a laptop or hybrid tablet. Many laptops (Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo, Dell) have problems with the touchpad. What to do if the touchpad on a laptop does not work in Windows 10? Let's look at 5 ways to solve this problem.

1. Re-enable the touchpad using the Fn key

One story happened to me when I turned on WiFi on my laptop and accidentally disabled the touchpad. For a long time I searched for the reason, without immediately realizing what had happened. It turned out to be simple, laptops have an additional function button called Fn at the bottom left of the keyboard. To enable any function on a laptop, press the combination of the Fn and F1...F12 buttons. On these same buttons F1-F12, pictures or symbols are drawn to apply the parameter. For example, to enable the touchpad, you need to press Fn+F7; on the F7 button itself there will be an image of something like a touchpad. You can press all the buttons in order Fn+F1...F12, but remember that there is a function to turn off the display; press again the buttons on which the screen went dark.

On some HP laptops, the touchpad is turned on and off by double-tapping the edge of the touchpad itself. Asus and acer brands may have a separate button next to the touchpad. If the touchpad still does not work, then move on.

2. Removing Other Mouse Drivers

There are times when you have had a whole bunch of drivers connected in the past from different devices mice and you never deleted them. Some drivers from mouse manufacturers automatically disable the Touchpad themselves. Go to device Manager by pressing a combination of buttons Win+R and enter in the line devmgmt.msc.

Find the line indicating mice and other pointing devices, click on the tab to expand the category and remove all mouse drivers in order until the touchpad starts working on your laptop. If it doesn't work, try rebooting the system after removing all drivers. Touchpad not working? Let's move on to the next point.

3. Update or rollback the touchpad driver

Try updating or rolling back the touchpad driver. Go to the same device manager as described above. Find the device Touchpad, usually it is called the same as the brand of laptop (Dell TouchPad, Lenovo TouchPad, Synaptics, HP TouchPad, Acer TouchPad, Asus TouchPad.) Right-click on your driver and select properties. Next, click Update to see if there are any useful updates for your touchpad.

Many people have reported on the Microsoft forums that the Touchpad stopped working after updating Windows 10, for this you need to select rollback the driver. If your Rollback button is not highlighted, it means you don’t have previous version drivers.

In many cases, the device manager does not work to enable TouchPath on a laptop. If your TouchPad still does not work on a laptop in Windows 10, then go to the mouse properties.

  • Dial mouse in line windows search and go to Mouse Settings.
  • Click Additional options mouse, in the window that opens go Device Settings, tab Touchpad or as in the picture.
  • Find your Touchpad and click "enable".

5. Disable touch screen input service for hybrid laptops

If your laptop is a hybrid (laptop and tablet in one with a touch display), there is a chance that the touch screen input service, which controls the functionality of the stylus, is interfering with your touchpad.

To disable the service press win+R then enter services.msc and in the list of services find TabletInputService or Tablet PC Input Service. Right-click on it, then disable it. A very inconvenient solution for those who use touch screen and touchpads, but you can then be smart and try to remove the drivers, roll back, update and then restart the service.

Today we’ll look at how you can enable the touchpad on a laptop in Windows 10. Many users don’t know what to do if the touchpad doesn’t respond to touches and finger presses, but it’s simple:

  • there are problems with the device diver, which is not uncommon after updating Windows 10 or the driver in automatic mode;
  • The touchpad is simply disabled in the system settings.

Turn on the device

One of the function keys F1-F12 in most cases is also responsible for turning the touchpad on/off. Which button does this can be understood based on the designation of the function buttons (in the screenshot it is F7). To use this function, you must simultaneously hold down the Fn key, located to the left of Space.

Usually, after this, an icon or inscription appears on the screen informing that the touchpad is working (activated). When pressed again, the device will be turned off again.

In most cases, if scrolling on the Windows 10 touchpad does not work or it does not respond to touches, this will be enough to get everything back to normal. In rare cases, the touchpad will need to be adjusted, especially when scrolling issues occur. To do this, call up the touch panel settings window.

1. Open the Control Panel through the search.

2. In the “View” form, select the icon visualization type as “Small icons”.

3. Call the “Mouse” applet.

4. In the mouse properties, go to the “ClicPad” tab, usually located last.

Usually the reason why the touchpad does not work, although it was enabled via keyboard hotkeys, is here.

5. Turn on the device if it is deactivated in the control panel.

6. Uncheck the option responsible for disabling the touchpad when connecting an external USB device for control (usually a mouse).

7. We return standard settings(this may solve the problem when scrolling does not function).

8. Go to additional “Options”.

This will open advanced settings for the touchpad, although everything there is configured in an optimal way for most users. In the window, you can configure gestures for the touchpad in Windows 10, change the speed and other scrolling settings, configure the sensor’s response to clicks, etc.

First, you should reset the settings to standard ones, and then you can change them to your own. We will not consider how to configure this or that parameter: there are no difficulties in this, and the process for each touchpad manufacturer is slightly different.

Updating device drivers

The second reason why the touchpad may not function or work incorrectly is outdated/incorrect touchpad drivers.

The point is that when automatic update Windows 10 selects the most suitable (in its opinion) drivers, downloading them from the Microsoft website, while ignoring official resources.

Automatic update

Let's start with more simple option– installing the driver through the Task Manager.

In this case, it will be downloaded from the Microsoft website, although the developer recommends reinstalling the drivers manually by downloading them official versions from the support site.

1. Call the window via context menu Starter, called Win→X.

2. Expand the item “Mice and other pointing devices”.

3. Select the item to update the drivers of the selected equipment.

4. Specify the automatic type of search for newer versions software.

5. We wait until the end of the search for the most suitable file.

6. Install it or close the window if the file version is the latest.

Installing the driver from the developer's website

If the previous option did not solve the problem or new driver was not found, it should be downloaded from the laptop support resource.

1. Go to the appropriate site.

2. Find your device.

3. Select a driver for the appropriate bit level of Windows 10 installed on the PC.

4. Upload the file.

5. Launch the installer and follow the instructions.

Note: sometimes after this update method Windows drivers 10 can replace it with its own, downloaded from Microsoft servers, and cause problems that have just been resolved. In such a case, you should download the Show or Hide Updates utility and use it to disable automatic search and downloading drivers for the touchpad.

More information

If the function key, which together with Fn should activate the touchpad, does not work, you should check the availability of specialized software from the laptop/netbook developer.

The touchpad may be disabled in the BIOS/UEFI. Read the instructions for your portable device, look for the option with the word Touchpad located in the peripherals section.
