This time our path lay through the capital of Kabardino - Balkaria, the city of Nalchik. It took about two hours from Nalchik to Terskol. The road is good, picturesque, especially in summer, when there is a lot of sun and greenery. Before reaching Terskol a couple of kilometers, we turned to the Cheget glade. Don't get lost, there is a pointer there.

The purpose of our trip was to climb Mount Cheget. Translated from Balkar means "northern" or "in the shadow". The weather was wonderful, the sky without a single cloud, just what you need for beautiful photos. In anticipation of vivid impressions, we arrived at the ski lift at 8 am.

There were still few tourists, the cable car worked from 9, and we had an hour left, which we decided to spend in a cafe over a cup of coffee.

Cheget is famous for its ski slopes in winter and hiking trails in summer. Skiers - beginners have nothing to do here, the tracks are designed for experienced athletes.

Both professionals and amateurs climb to the top on foot, but if you spent a year on the couch, it will be hard. The rise is quite serious. Local guides take those wishing to climb Elbrus here for primary acclimatization before the hike.

The view from here impressed no less. We saw the famous glacier Seven. Unfortunately, we do not know the names of all the mountains and gorges.

There was a lake below. Moreover, the water in it was multi-colored. We urgently need to study the geography of these places.

We witnessed a photo session of a beautiful young couple for a wedding album. Mount Cheget is ideal for photo tours. We have not come across more spectacular locations for pictures.

After taking a huge number of photos, we went down to the cafe. They offer branded berry tea, in fact, a hot compote, very tasty. And sweets - baklava, brushwood, buns. Prices are slightly higher than below. Tea, coffee cost about 100 rubles, a slice of sweets about 150.We climbed to drink tea on a huge stone. It tastes better!

What we would like to advise for a trip to Cheget in the summer. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, small stones crumble under your feet, you can fall. We always order shorpo, after a dry meal on the road, a liquid rich lamb soup seasoned with garlic and pepper is what you need.

We went to Terskol to spend the night. After the last trip, when we were looking for a hotel room for half a night, this time we were ready in advance. Booked for hotel "Kupol". A standard double room cost 2000 rubles.

We lived on the fourth floor, with a view of Cheget from the balcony. The construction “landscapes” around us spoiled the impression a little, but this is all temporary. Parking for as far as cars. Downstairs there is a cafe with traditional local cuisine. The room is very comfortable, the bathroom and shower are clean. There is a refrigerator, TV. WI-FI access.

How to get to Elbrus

In fact, the choice of transport is not great. The easiest and most convenient way is with a personal car. But if you did not come to the resorts of the Caucasian Mineral Waters by car, then there is no other way to get to Elbrus except for using paid excursions. In KMV, transport links between the landmarks of the region are very poorly developed, but very good between the resorts themselves. For example, it will not be difficult for you to move between Pyatigorsk, Essentuki, Kislovodsk, Zheleznovodsk and Mineralnye Vody. An electric train runs from Pyatigorsk to Kislovodsk, minibuses very often go to other cities. But when it comes to such attractions as Elbrus, the transport system is powerless. We were in the Caucasus for 9 days and an excursion to Elbrus became an obsession. We did not want to leave the Caucasus without seeing the majestic Elbrus, but nature behaved in such a way that Elbrus simply did not appear on the horizon, and the forecasts were not comforting. Thus, the excursion to Elbrus was gradually postponed almost to the last day of the trip. But our efforts and delays were not in vain, Elbrus heard us and it was the day of the trip that turned out to be sunny and calm.

The bus picked us up from Essentuki and took us to Elbrus. True, the road still passes through Pyatigorsk, so Pyatigorsk is the best place from where you can go to Elbrus.

Polyana Cheget and Mount Cheget

The first stop is the Cheget glade. After all, our excursion covers two peaks at once - Cheget and Elbrus. Take care of this detail in advance, many travel agencies provide excursions to only one of the two peaks. I must admit there is some common sense in this. If you are not going to climb to the very peak, but how we just “ride the cable car” and “snap pictures”, then it makes sense to focus on one peak, though we won't tell you which one, this is a difficult choice.

It must be admitted that the infrastructure of the Elbrus region is developed at a very high level. You can come here in shale and easily equip yourself for the ascent, subject to the availability of money, of course. It has everything from equipment rental and hotels to souvenir shops and cafeterias, where groups gather and guides are hired.

There is a chair lift in the meadow, which for 500 rubles takes us to the “Ai” cafe at a height of 2750 m and that's it. That is, of course, the second lift should have lifted us even higher and for the same money, but it did not work, and the price remained the same. But the cable car that we overcame was enough for us. 17 minutes of horror and fear, as a person who is afraid of heights, this event seemed to me in this light. The fact is that the cable car on Cheget is chairlift, that is, you fasten with a chain at your belt and dangle your legs all the way, and the ascent runs through the most natural abyss, maybe this is exaggerated, but that's how I felt at that moment. Of course, I could not take pictures of the lifting process, just at the time of the trip my grasping reflex was activated and I grabbed the handrail and could not release it until my feet touched a hard surface. You will laugh, but on the way back, just at the moment when we passed this unpleasant section with an abyss, the cable car was stopped and we hung in the air for another 5 minutes. These impressions were very strong. Having overcome these difficulties, we found ourselves on the site and a grandiose landscape stretched out in front of us.

It is possible and necessary to climb higher, but the guide devotes too little time. Is the height a little dizzy, or is it so intoxicating to look so chic?

Elbrus, cable car to Mir station

We pass the village of Terskol, find ourselves in the Azau glade, there are even more diverse establishments here. The cable car here is more modern than on Cheget, it is a pendulum European, it costs 600 rubles. per person. She lifts it in two stages. From the Azau glade to the Old Horizon, and then to the Mir station. Further to the "barrels" there is a chairlift, but it was already closed, so we were content with an altitude of 3500 meters.




From under the melting snow, thin streams are knocked out, they descend to the foot of the mountain, in order to unite there with their brothers in a mighty mountain stream called Baksan.

Gray snow and brown stone create a sense of unreality. It is easy to imagine that there are several moons in the sky, and under your feet is the earth of an alien planet. But this is not an alien planet, this is the majestic Elbrus.

Looking at the cheerful bearded guys in sunglasses and with backpacks, there was an irresistible desire to go with them, there to the sparkling peaks of Mount Elbrus. We were daydreaming, looking at the mountains, that we lost sight of time so much that we had to have lunch in a hurry, and without lunch we would have passed the rest of the day hungry.

They feed on Azau, admittedly, without a soul. Edible, but not very tasty. We were unlucky with the barbecue, as the locals do not marinate lamb, they immediately fry it, but obviously not the freshest meat was stored for tourists in Azau, so the lamb turned out to be tough. Lunch cost us 840 rubles.

Narzan glade, Elbrus

Last stop, Narzan Glade. It is very close, 10 minutes from Azau. We cross a small bridge over the Baksan river and find ourselves in a small clearing.

Here, too, everything is equipped for tourists. Gazebos, barbecue yards, souvenir shops and the main attraction of this place are narzan springs. There are several of them, but the taste of water from them is about the same.

The Russian man is strong. The entire tourist bus drank narzana in each of the four springs, and not a single passenger asked to go out to freshen up during the whole journey, which is two and a half hours.

The nature of the mountainous area will hardly leave you indifferent.
