After performing such simple manipulations, the user will be prompted to add a start and finish point, after which a path with a minimum mileage will be paved (an optimal route to follow to the specified point is generated).

Among other things, the offline navigator has a search function, which is very necessary, and most importantly, pleasant. The new version of the application has eliminated a long-standing problem - the delay in dialing the desired address.

The main features of offline navigator for android:

  • A large number of accurate maps.
  • The maps contain addresses, streets, and other places of public recreation (cafes, restaurants), etc.
  • Good rendering speed and detail.
  • Clear and fast route search.
  • Automatic updating of maps on a mobile device, provided that this function is activated on the device itself.

Dear friends!

Today I want to draw your attention to one of GPS navigators for mobile devices on Android OS. It is called Be-on-Road and you can install it from this page on the Google Play Store. The program developer's page is located.

The main advantages of this navigator are that it is completely free and that after installing the cards, it works in the mode offline, that is, without the need to access the Internet and in the absence mobile communication... It only uses signals from the GPS module, which is now found in almost every smartphone model.

Together with it, it is automatically installed free license to use a set of maps in the OpenStreetMap format.

These maps for the regions of the world you are interested in must be downloaded after installing the application directly from the program. In the future, maps can also be updated for free on average once a quarter.

At startup, the navigator automatically determines the place where you are now, and allows you to build a route (along roads) to the place you specified on the map. A place can be selected by its name, GPS coordinates, or from a large list of points of interest (POI) available in the application, for example, a cafe, stadium, bank, etc.

general information

Be-on-road is one of the few navigation apps with free downloadable maps. It was originally developed by the Czech company Aponia Software, which was far from new to this market. The company began its activity in the mid-2000s at the peak of the growing popularity of electronic mobile cartography and navigation. In Russia, Be-on-road once appeared in Mio navigators, where it replaced iGo products, offering faster updates of maps and work with information about traffic jams.

In 2014, the application was taken over by another company - Bzing s.r.o. At the same time, Aponia was left with a clone, which received a new name and formally distanced itself from its rejected brother by supporting Navteq paid maps. Users who would like to continue working with paid cards, including updating them, were asked to download the new Aponia application, and Be-on-road, who left "on the side," limited itself to supporting exclusively free cards OSM, which at that time could be counted on one hand. However, their number began to grow rapidly, and in just a few months there were several dozen available cards.

Pricing and Licensing Policy

With the change of the "owner", the model of earnings has also changed - now the application will offer users a package of additional paid features, while navigation will remain free, including all cartography. The package price for Russia is 600 rubles. It includes the function of projection of the image on the windshield, warning of changing the speed mode, display mobile cameras speed control, lane guidance, more frequent map updates, and personalized support.

System requirements

There are no special requirements for the system. The application is ready to work even with old android versions 2.1, but keep in mind that the maps require a lot of space. On the other hand, the application offers the user a choice of storage location for maps, including an external memory card installed in the system.

Interface

The working screen is extremely laconic. In addition to the map and an arrow showing your location, there is an information panel at the bottom, where you can select three parameters related to the laid route and movement along it, or data from a GPS receiver, such as speed and altitude. When you touch the screen, a menu appears on the right with zoom buttons and display settings, and on the left is an icon for opening a pop-up action menu.

The map itself is even more ascetic. On small and medium scales, there is a minimum of detail: only the main roads, outlines of zones and areas, plus some POI elements. And only on the largest scales there are roadways, signatures with street names and outlines of buildings.

The horizontal mode is present, but nothing new is added to the working area.

The main menu has a one-color tiled interface that has migrated to mobile app from auto navigators, including small buttons "back" and "off". Despite the multilingualism and several options for voice guidance for the Russian language alone, half of the menu items are indicated in English.

Settings appearance located in the Appearance menu. Here you can change the set of colors for the map itself, as well as control the display of labels of geographic objects and POIs on it.

In the Objects section, you can enable the display of sidewalks (footpaths), houses as 3D objects (all of the same height), and traffic signs at intersections when driving along a route.

Have the card individual problems with the display of the contours of the coastlines. Now water disappears, now dry. Moreover, in most cases, objects are absent at all scales.

Brief summary
Liked:asceticism, the presence in the menu of buttons for quickly building routes "home" and "work".

Did not like: slow drawing of the map and small detail on small scales, errors in drawing water bodies, partial Russification, exiting the application only by pressing a button in the menu.

Search and work with the map

Everything here is not as bad as one would expect from an application ported from auto navigators, but not as good either. The main search is targeted. First, the name of the settlement is entered, then the street and so on, for which the keyboard built into the application is used.

As you type the names of geographic features, the list of results is automatically rebuilt to suggest the most appropriate options. In other words, the principle is the same as that of the navigators 10 years ago. But the presence of the Online Search item partially saves the situation. However, this type of search requires Internet access to be, in fact, a single line of address entry. You can write “15 outside the river” and get a list of all settlements where there is a street outside the river, without taking into account whether there is house number 15. But if it is there, by clicking on the corresponding element of the list, it will be shown on the map. However, you cannot find out just by looking at the list.

Everything else is useless to search with it. You will not get anything intelligible by queries for the names of various geo objects or for common names such as “store”.

Search in the POI database is quite adequate. It has a lot of different categories, as well as objects in them.

The search for objects can be carried out around the specified points on the map, near the current position, near the end point of the route or along its entire length.

You can also point your finger anywhere on the map or any object and then, by clicking on the ball icon on the left, call service menu, where you will be prompted to get directions to this place, include it in an existing trip plan, get information on it or search for POIs in the area, and also save the point as a favorite.

Brief summary
Liked: a large number of address objects, an extensive and structured POI base, it is possible to search for objects near specified points on the map.

Did not like: no normal general search; outdated interface; displaying the outlines of houses and minor roads, including courtyards, only at the largest scales.

Relevance of maps

All maps used in the application are compiled from OSM maps. The map of Russia takes 744 MB and is updated approximately two to three times a year. At the time of this writing, version Q3 2014 was available, released in February 2015. The map has a good detailing of the road network, the relevance of which is quite consistent with the date in its name, i.e. the third quarter of the last year. For example, there are no two new open sections of the M-11 Moscow-St. Petersburg highway on it.

Routes and navigation

Routes are built relatively quickly - in just a few seconds. In the corresponding menu, there is a classic set of settings that allows you to select the type of route (fast or short), the type of vehicle and permission to route routes along highways and their toll sections.

Routes can be edited by adding new points to them, which can then also be changed or deleted. Through the menu, you can search for POIs along the route or the end and start points, and change the route to arrive at them.

In general, the routes are being built adequate. But it was noticed that in some cases they can have excess length (up to + 20% at distances of ≈1000 km) or go around the places familiar to the author, the most convenient for travel.

Also, the application has the ability to play the route, but only on condition that it was built from a point different from the current position according to the GPS receiver. In addition, there is no playback speed control during playback.

Navigation support here is not much different from other applications. While driving along a route, the direction and distance to the nearest maneuver is shown at the top of the screen, as well as the name of the current street or road section and the one to which the turn will be made. When you click on this part of the screen, you go to the route settings, where, among other things, you can use the familiar “detour” function, which in the menu is called Road Blocking. However, unlike other applications, here you can specify the length of the covered section of the route, which is very convenient.

If you leave the route, the application does not panic and simply rebuilds it silently.

Voice prompts raises no objections. They are timely, but there are no settings, except for the choice of one of the three Russian-language voices. There are about a hundred options for "voice acting" available for download.

It is noteworthy that the application has a built-in base of stationary road cameras, as well as a mechanism for adding and displaying dynamic objects on the map.

The database of cameras is being updated, most likely, along with the map itself. Dynamic objects are taken from the Internet, which requires from several tens to a couple of hundred kilobytes of traffic per couple of hours of driving. The relevance of the database is consistent with the frequency of its updating, and the fullness is far from ideal.

The application also gives information about the current speed limit and gives a customizable sound signal if it is exceeded by a certain threshold (10% or 20%).

Brief summary
Liked: speed limit alert.

Did not like: no traffic information, low relevance of the camera base, does not offer alternative route options.

All sorts of "goodies"

There are few additional features in the application, and almost all of them are included in the paid package. Only the function of getting the address of your friends from your address book and laying a route to them is available for free.

It works in cases where people themselves indicate their address in their profile on the phone or in Google plus, and also if data from any messenger, for example Skype, got into the address book. Among several hundred addressees from the address book in the author's smartphone, there were only a few people who indicated their address. They all labeled it as "Moscow" or something like that. By clicking on a contact, the application put a marker on the map in the area of \u200b\u200bthe village "Moscow" in the Kirov region. In general, it is logical.

The paid package consists of the function of projecting the image onto the windshield (for this, the image is displayed on the screen in a mirrored form, and the smartphone must be placed closer to the windshield); speed change warnings; display of mobile speed cameras; lane guidance; more frequent updates cards and personal technical support.

It would be nice to add a dash cam function to this list. Although no one bothers you to use simultaneously applications of other developers.

Testing

This time, the speed characteristics were evaluated on a smartphone with two Cortex-A9 cores, clocked at up to 1.2 GHz and 1 GB of memory. OS version - 4.2.2. And also on a single-core device with a gigahertz Cortex-A9, which was the main one in all our previous tests.

Route time and system resource utilization

The time for laying routes directly depends on their length. For conventionally short distances of 100-150 km, this takes 1-3 seconds. A distance of 1800 kilometers on a dual-core vehicle is "covered" in 7-10 seconds. But the application, alas, could not build a route from Moscow to Vladivostok at all. Even after 25 seconds of thinking.

When laying routes, the system uses all available CPU resources, therefore, the specified time has doubled on a single-core smartphone. Overall, this is one of the slowest apps in this respect among all previously tested. Only Sygic performed these operations longer.

CPU consumption is also overpriced. The dual-core system was “puzzled” by 55-95% during route guidance, depending on speed. Single core showed the load of the computing core in the region of 95-100%. At the moments of stops, the computational load dropped sharply to 20-30%. But as soon as the movement began, it again increased almost to the maximum. Such a load could not but affect the battery life: its charge literally melted before our eyes. You can help the cause by turning off the screen. In the background, the application continues to run, providing the driver with voice prompts.

Network traffic volume per trip

Although the application is marketed as completely offline, it appears that it periodically tries to retrieve data on police ambushes from the Web. But in the end we are talking about several tens of kilobytes of data per hour. But what constitutes background traffic (when the application is not in use) is difficult to say.

The absence of the Network does not affect the performance of the application in any way.

The presence of objects in the database

Our old plate with the list of settlements, where we record the quality of cartographic and address information, will help us to compare the quality of the cartographic coverage. It does not give an absolute and objective assessment, but it will help you to orient yourself a little.

Be-on-road looks pretty good compared to other commercial products, to say the least!

conclusions

Being ideologically an offline application, Be-on-road copes with its task where there is no access to the Internet at all or very expensive roaming. It has a quite passable interface (still, the Russification would be corrected ...), a relatively good POI base and well-developed maps. The navigation mode is also pretty good. It even has speed limit warnings and an indication of the location of speed cameras. The only problem here is the high load on hardware resources.

Other drawbacks include infrequent map updates (about twice a year), lack of traffic information, and poor detail on small scales to improve overall performance. But the main thing is that the application and all the cards, of which there are now more than 280, are absolutely free! In short, we recommend.
