Sony vaio pro 13 laptop reviews. Sony ultrabooks: review of the best models and reviews about them. Ports and connectors

The best material for premium ultrabooks is rightfully considered aluminum. If we are talking about the visual and tactile components, as well as the rigidity of the structure, then it simply has no competitors. It loses only when the developers are trying to get an ultralight device at any cost. It is then that lighter magnesium alloys or carbon fiber reinforced plastics enter the scene. For example, thanks to the use of carbon fiber, the weight of the hero of today's review of the Sony VAIO Pro 13 is one third less than the average and is only a little over one kilogram.

To begin with, we note that the Sony VAIO Pro ultrabook is available in 11-inch and 13-inch versions, for each of which you can choose black or silver (and even red in selected markets) design options, as well as a regular or touch screen, not to mention about other components. We got a 13-inch touchscreen modification of the ultrabook in black for our test, and this is what we will talk about in this review.

Equipment

Ultrabook Sony VAIO Pro 13 comes in a compact black cardboard box typical of the Japanese brand. The package includes accompanying documentation, a power supply, a full-size HDMI to analog D-sub adapter, and a miniature wireless router.

To organize your own Wi-Fi network, just connect this plastic cube to one of the ends of the power supply and connect an Ethernet LAN cable to the RJ45 port. Note that the USB connector on the laptop charger, which is used to power the router, can also be used to recharge the peripherals without taking up one of the two USB ports on the ultrabook case.

If you are looking for the longest possible battery life, check out the optional Sony VAIO Pro Ultrabook Coin Battery. This 35 Wh battery connects to the bottom of the Ultrabook, increasing its thickness by 1.5 cm and increasing weight by 290 grams, but at the same time doubles the total battery capacity, which means the battery life of the Ultrabook.

Design

As we already mentioned, most of the body of the Sony VAIO Pro 13 is made of carbon fiber. The ultrabook cover made of this material has a rather complex shape, in addition, its upper edge is finished with a glossy finish, and the lower edge is finished with a metal plate. In working order, the ultrabook does not rest on the back of the bottom, but on the base of the display unit, in connection with which it was equipped with two plastic "legs".

The base of the case has no less complex shape, where an absolutely flat main panel is combined with helical curved sidewalls and a pointed front edge. Interestingly, there are no holes for air intake on the bottom panel of the ultrabook, here you can find only a connector and holes for fixing an additional battery, as well as an anti-slip rubber pad.

The front and rear edges of the Sony VAIO Pro 13 are free of connectors, on the left you can find only the charger socket with an indicator and a radiator for the cooling system. Thus, all available connectors are placed on the right side panel, this is a card reader, a combined audio port, a pair of USB 3.0 connectors and a full-size HDMI.

Display

Opening the Sony VAIO Pro 13 ultrabook with one hand will not work; you have to hold the base of the case a little. The display unit is made according to the scheme without sides, apparently this solution is used only for touch modifications. This model uses a quality 13.3-inch Sony Triluminos IPS-matrix with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and wide viewing angles.

Brightness can be manually adjusted from 3 to 240 cd / m2, or you can rely on an automatic adjustment system. It is also possible to select one of three color display modes: "vivid", "natural" or "text", and in the latter case, you can additionally adjust the color tone.

The touch screen is mainly used in the Modern UI shell, while the large touchpad looks more preferable in the classic Windows interface.

Ergonomics

The bottom panel of the Sony VAIO Pro 13 with a large touchpad is reinforced with a sheet of metal, which is not at all superfluous given the minimum thickness of the case in this place. The upper part of the operating panel, which is essentially the substrate of the island keyboard, is made of practical rough soft-touch plastic.

The well-designed island keyboard features LED backlighting that can be manually turned on or off, or turned on automatically in low light. Above the keyboard, you can find the call button for the Sony VAIO Care proprietary utility and the light sensor.

An activity indicator is built into the power button of the ultrabook, and this is done in such a way that it is visible both with open and closed lids. In operating mode, the translucent indicator is highlighted in bright green, and in standby mode - blinking red. The back edge of the cabinet, which looks empty when the lid is closed, actually contains a proprietary speaker system.

Functionality

The Sony VAIO Pro 13 ultrabook is expectedly built on the energy-efficient Intel Haswell platform, in particular, a choice of a Core i5-4200U or a Core i7-4500U processor with integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400. The RAM is 4 or 8 GB, and the SSD capacity is 128, 256 or 512 GB depending on configuration. Note that in addition to standard functional blocks, this model is equipped with TPM and NFC modules.

As a result of testing the device in the configuration Intel Core i5-4200U / Intel HD Graphics 4400/4 GB RAM / 128 GB SSD, the following results were obtained in the current benchmarks. The battery life on a full 35 Wh battery was two and a half hours at maximum load and nine and a half hours in reading mode.

CrystalDiskMark

The most striking impression during the operation of the Sony VAIO Pro 13 was the minimum weight and dimensions. This 13-inch ultrabook really barely feels in the hands, which will surely be appreciated by active mobile users. At the same time, the black body and glossy touch screen literally attract fingerprints, and the whole structure lacks rigidity at some points. We also note that with insufficient care, carbon fiber surfaces are quickly covered with scratches and abrasions, so the use of a cover will be absolutely useful.

Outcome

As a result, the Sony VAIO Pro 13 is a 13-inch ultrabook with an IPS touch screen on a standard hardware platform, the main advantages of which are minimal thickness and weight. Recommended for those who are not used to letting go of their laptop during the working day, as well as for all fans of Sony-style.

Even during the Computex exhibition, Sony demonstrated new ultrabukes from the Vaio Pro series based on the new Haswell platform. The Vaio Pro 11 and Vaio Pro 13 are the lightest touchscreen ultrabooks with a carbon body (13.3 "model also available with matte non-touchscreen). Together with the MacBook Air Mid 2013, the Vaio Pro Ultrabooks are the first lightweight notebooks with Haswell processors. We have received a Sony Vaio Pro 13 ultrabook at Hardwareluxx, which we will start testing as early as possible, but for now we present a video with unboxing and our first impressions.

To see exactly what characteristics make the Vaio Pro 13 attractive, we compared it to Apple's direct competitor, the current 13 "MacBook Air:

The table shows that the Sony Vaio Pro 13 is a serious competitor not only to the MacBook Air, but also to any ultrabooks running Windows. The carbon body is thinner and lighter than competing Apple Ultrabooks. In addition, the new product from Sony boasts a better display: while Apple devices support a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels and do not support touch control, the Vaio Pro 13 comes with a Full HD touch display. Optionally, the user can access a matt display without touch control or, for an additional fee, a glossy display. The bright, high-contrast IPS panel not only provides good viewing angles, but also better color space coverage than an Apple display.

As for other characteristics, both "lightweights" are quite similar. The Vaio Pro 13 is equipped with a Haswell Core i5 or Core i7 processor, 4 or 8 GB of RAM (modules are soldered to the board) and a 128, 256 or 512 GB SSD. To keep the weight down, Sony has installed a smaller battery, making the Sony Ultrabook considerably inferior to the MacBook Air. However, you can purchase an additional battery that attaches to the underside of the ultrabook.

In the video presented, you can watch the process of unboxing the Vaio Pro 13 (we received a model with a matte display, Core i5, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB SSD), as well as make a first impression of the new Sony product. A detailed test and review will follow later.

Fan and Wi-Fi issues: Meanwhile, SONY has released a new BIOS version (R1021V7) that reduces the fan noise in Silent mode. There is also a new Wi-Fi driver (Wireless LAN Driver Update (Intel) - 16.1.3.1), which should provide a more stable connection. However, it seemed to us that the Wi-Fi signal coverage area, even after the update, is significantly below the average for a laptop.

Note 1: The original review contains a specification error. Instead of an i5 processor, i7 is indicated.
Note 2: We figured out the prefixes. The last two letters represent the country and the color. That is: RB - Russian Black, EB - English Black. Or RS - Russian Silver, ES - English Silver.

Main characteristics : 13.3 ”touch screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080; Intel Core i5 processor (dual-core, 1.6 GHz); 4 GB of RAM; 128 GB PCIe SSD drive; weight - 1.06 kg; OS - Windows 8 Pro.

Manufacturer: Sony

Sony Vaio Pro 13. What is it?

The Sony Vaio Pro 13 is the world's lightest 13 ”ultrabook, at least that's what the manufacturer claims. Also, the advantages of this model include a fourth-generation dual-core processor Core i5 and a Full HD screen that demonstrates simply excellent image quality. According to the manufacturer, these advantages should provide a serious advantage over the closest competitors. Initially, sales in Europe were priced at around £ 1,000, which is approximately RUB 55,000. Such a low cost (I don’t know what exactly the manufacturer means here. More precisely, for whom or why this price is not high. Perhaps for Europe or for other similar devices that really cost much more. Well, okay) and stylish design, should make the Pro 13 the main contender for the 13 ”MacBook Air. And whether this is so, we will try to figure it out in the course of the review.

Sony Vaio Pro 13 - Design and Build Quality

Recently, there has been a tendency to "wrap" premium ultrabooks in an aluminum case. Perhaps this is done in the hope that there will be an even greater resemblance to the “reference” MacBook Air. However, it's nice to know that not everyone is following this path. In the case of the Vaio Pro, it was decided to wear it in a carbon fiber casing, which was previously used in the case of Vaio Z series laptops. Although the material was left the same, the design was completely redesigned. Vaio Pro is dominated by straight, strict lines. Thanks to this, the ultrabook has a rather expensive and representative appearance. To get one in public is definitely not a shame.

The Pro 13 weighs 1.06 kg and this is the main claim to fame. After all, it is 290 g less than the “you know who” (Mac Book Air), which weighs 1.35 kg. The device from Sony is even lighter than Samsung's 9 series (by 70 g). There are certainly devices with a lower declared weight. For example Surfase Pro (910 g). However, when you put the keyboard on, it also becomes heavier than the Pro 13. The thickness of our device is 17.2 mm, making it truly one of the thinnest and lightest ultrabooks available. The body of the laptop thickens towards the far edge. This is done for better usability. The hinges on which the screen is attached are completely hidden and cannot be seen at all. The keyboard deserves a separate discussion. It is quite convenient and pleasant to work with it. It is also equipped with a backlight. At the bottom is the All In One (no physical buttons) touch pad. All ports are located on the sides of the ultrabook. On the right is the charger connector, while on the left there is a card reader, two USB 3.0 ports and an HDMI port. The package contains several pleasant surprises as well. One of them is a wireless router capable of providing a network for five devices at the same time. There is also an HDMI to 2 VGA adapter, thanks to which it is possible to simultaneously connect two monitors. This is a definite plus when using the device in a home office environment. All these pleasant surprises are included in our test version (Sony Vaio Pro 13 SVP1321M2EB). This package is 60 pounds more expensive than the standard one (about 3,300 rubles).

Sony VAIO Pro 13 - Screen Quality

For all the subtlety and lightness that the manufacturer so praises, the “main character”, in our opinion, is the 13.3 ”Full HD screen. The display exhibits very vivid and vivid colors, making it great for watching videos in high definition. Well, the fact that the screen is touch, adds flexibility and convenience when using the Windows 8 interface. Also, the screen has Triluminos technology (previously used in BRAVIA TVs), which provides excellent black depth. I'm not afraid of this word, the screen of the Sony Vaio Pro 13 is one of the best we've seen in an ultrabook of all time. To confirm our subjective assessment, here are the results of screen tests that were done using the Xrite i1 Display Pro colorimeter.
Contrast - 1.215: 1
Brightness - 372 lumens
Color temperature - 6419K, which is pretty close to the standard (6500K)
Color accuracy - 1.31 DeltaE. For those who do not know, I will explain - the results below 1.5 are excellent, especially for the ultrabook screen.
Viewing angles are quite wide thanks to IPS technology
The only negative we found was the glossy finish of the screen. Because of this, he is quite blind in the sun and fingerprints are striking. Sony also installed support for X-Reality, which aims to sharpen video. However, it is quite difficult to notice a significant difference in video with a resolution below HD.

Sony Vaio Pro 13 - Performance

The Sony Vaio Pro 13 is the first ultrabook to feature a fourth-generation Intel processor. Compared to its predecessors, it boasts more energy efficiency, which increases battery life, as well as improved graphics. The dual-core 1.6GHz Core i5, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of PCIe SSD on board clearly offer more performance than day-to-day tasks like office, web browsing or video require. Of course, I would like to finally get great (emphasis on the first syllable) performance in games. However, this moment disappointed us. Simple arcade and casual games run smoothly. But with heavier graphics, the HD Graphics 4400 does not do very well. To begin with, here are the results of some synthetic tests that we conducted.
PC Mark 7 - 4572 points Not to say that the result was outstanding. It is more than Samsung Series 7 Ultra NP740U3E by only 4%.
The Cloud Gate test took place with an average FPS of about 20 and showed a result of 2761 points.
For a more realistic idea of the performance of the graphics, we launched the game Sniper Challenge 2, which runs on the Cry Engine 3. The results were highly expected and far from ideal. At Full HD resolution, the FPS level was completely unsuitable for a comfortable game. And even when we lowered the resolution, we did not notice any significant changes for the better. If you still plan to use the ultrabook for games, then we advise you to opt for simpler and older gaming applications. In this aspect, the Vaio Pro 13 lags behind its Mac Book Air 13 rival, which has the faster Intel HD 5000 at its disposal.

Sony VAIO Pro 13 - Noise and Heat

With the performance hidden under the hood of such a slim body, it's no surprise that the Ultrabook heats up noticeably when performing heavy tasks. Heating is especially noticeable in the area of the port for connecting to the charger. However, the temperature does not rise to such an extent that it becomes uncomfortable to work. In terms of noise, the Pro 13's cooling system goes into overdrive at startup, then calms down after a few seconds. This also happens when installing applications and during other resource-intensive tasks. What pleased us, even in this mode, the ultrabook behaves quite quietly and does not bother at all with its noise. If you sharpen your attention, the fans are certainly audible, but nothing more.

Sony Vaio Pro 13 - Battery Life

According to the manufacturer, the battery life of the Vaio Pro 13 should be eight hours. It is also possible to buy a model with an additional battery. In this case, the battery life should last up to 13 hours. In the PowerMark test, the device showed a result of six hours and 30 minutes, which is seriously less than the stated time. The battery is charged fairly quickly. In half an hour, the charge rose to 39% of the critical mark. If you want to buy a model that includes an additional battery, then it will cost you an extra 79 pounds, which is about 4,000 rubles. The complete set in this case is 1078 pounds (59,290 rubles). And this is already more expensive than the MacBook Air by 129 pounds (7 095 rubles). The extra battery adds 290g and the total weight is 1.35kg. But installing a second battery should extend the battery life to the level of the MacBook, and perhaps even surpass it. We apologize, but we did not have the opportunity to test the device in this configuration, so we cannot say for sure. In conclusion of this point, we can say that the battery life of the Vaio Pro 13 is average and far from being a record. However, such indicators should be enough for the vast majority of users and fully satisfy their needs.

Sony Vaio Pro 13 - Keyboard and Touchpad

As we've seen from past Vaio benchmarks, the keyboard is something Sony does pretty well. Here we can note excellent illumination, which is completely uniform. Clear markings that are clearly visible. Also, the size of the keys is quite large, the stroke is soft and smooth, all this allows you to feel very comfortable while typing. And when combined with an aluminum wrist rest, the user experience reaches the highest level. It's a shame that the touchpad spoiled the whole impression. Of course, it supports all the usual functions of a mouse, but it often acts somewhat slow and a little slowed down. It should be noted that there is NFC support, and this greatly facilitates the work with other portable devices, such as smartphones. Also, using this technology, it is possible to connect headphones. There are absolutely no complaints about this aspect. Everything works pretty quickly and without any complaints. NFC testing was performed on a Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone and Jabra Revo headphones.

The rest that they forgot to say

Probably now is the time to remember the operating system that is installed on the device, namely Windows 8 Pro. This version adds several security features compared to the original Windows 8. However, in our opinion, the OS is still rather crude and somewhat unfinished. Touch apps still freeze on launch, some of them didn't see the internet connection, although that was fine. The number of applications in the Windows Store, although growing, is still small in comparison with the same Google Store. However, this cannot be called a significant drawback, since Windows is full of applications outside of stores. For video calls, the device has a front camera with a resolution of 0.9 megapixels. The camera has an Exmor CMOS sensor, which allows you to achieve quite decent shooting results in low and low light. The sound quality is quite acceptable. There is practically no dynamic distortion even at maximum volume levels. So the built-in speakers can provide ample sound for watching movies.

Is the Sony Vaio Pro 13 eligible for purchase?

The Sony Vaio Pro 13 is by far one of the best Ultrabooks we've tested. It is an excellent device in terms of portability and design, and it also has an excellent screen on board. The device from Sony will definitely be on a par with the MacBook Air, Lenovo ThinkPad Carbon X1 and Samsung Series 7 Ultra. When it comes to battery life, when purchasing a version with an additional battery, the Vaio Pro catches up and even surpasses the MacBook Air. And with all that, it's lighter than the Microsoft Surface Pro.

Verdict

Ultrabook of the top segment, the main advantages of which are minimal weight and a delightful screen. Despite lagging behind the MacBook Air in battery life, the Sony Vaio Pro 13 is definitely a great laptop in its class.

pros
Thin
Great screen
Comfortable keyboard

Minuses
Battery life is shorter than MacBook Air
Not the fastest touchpad

For several years in a row, the Apple MacBook Air has been a recognized benchmark among thin, light, and simply beautiful portable PCs. And it's not so important that Air is far from the thinnest or even the lightest - the main thing is how advertising and marketing work. Steve Jobs in this regard was an unsurpassed master. Here, of course, you can argue for a long time about the advantages or disadvantages of this or that OS, but still you can't get away from the fact that thin ultrabooks now seriously compete with the MacBook Air.

Many manufacturers tried to surpass the Air in terms of thickness and weight, as well as in terms of sales, but Sony did the brightest. So far, only the Japanese giant can offer not only a thin, but also a light alternative to the famous "Air".

Sony VAIO Pro 13 - general view

This time Sony introduced 11- and 13-inch Sony VAIO Pro laptops. They look suspiciously like the series VAIO Z which did not receive the upgrade to Intel Haswell processors. On the manufacturer's website, VAIO Pro laptops are called "the lightest in the world." If you scroll down the page, it becomes clear from the footnotes that the lightest VAIO Pro are considered only in the ultrabook class and only on June 5, 2013. However, at the time of this writing, the Sony VAIO Pros are indeed the lightest. Thus, the weight of the 11-inch model is only 870 grams, and the 13-inch ultrabook is slightly heavier: 1060 grams. By the way, the 11-inch MacBook Air weighs 1,080 grams, while the 13-inch weighs 1.35 kilos.

But with all this, the 11- and 13-inch Sony VAIO Pro has an IPS-matrix with Full HD resolution and touch control, while the Air laptops have “regular” screens with TN matrices, and the resolution is 1366x768 and 1440x900 pixels respectively. In general, while the Sony VAIO Pro has every chance of becoming a new benchmark.

⇡ Appearance

On sale Sony VAIO Pro is available in two colors: black and silver. A black laptop looks much better than a light one, but, unfortunately, it will collect fingerprints at an incredible speed, and you won't be able to quickly wipe them off. In general, the silver version is much more practical, although not so beautiful. Another red version will appear soon - but it's not for everybody's taste.

The materials are good, the build quality is good too. However, the price of a laptop is such that otherwise it would be somehow wrong.

Front and back views

The leading edge is extremely narrow, so there is not a single functional element on it. The back surface is completely covered by the display lid, so it's empty too. On the left there is only a socket for connecting an external power source and a ventilation grill. The starboard side is the busiest. There is a memory card reader, a connector for an audio headset, an HDMI port, and a pair of USB 3.0 ports, one of them with the ability to charge small equipment.

On the bottom, in the front part, there is one rubber foot for the entire width of the case, and in the back there is a pair of large rectangular inserts. If you open the laptop, then from the back it rests on a pair of small legs on the lid. Whether open or closed, the ultrabook easily slides on any surface. However, you should not blame solely the legs for insufficient tenacity - the weight of the device is simply too small for reliable fixation, and the use of softer rubber in the construction of the legs would lead to their rapid wear. In the center of the bottom there is a plug that hides the connector for connecting an external flat battery with a capacity of 36 W * h (4690 mA * h).

Bottom view

The workspace panel is split into two parts. The part closest to the user is smooth, with a "polished" texture. And, as already noted, in the black version of the case, this panel is instantly covered with prints. The far part - the panel around the keyboard - has a rough surface, so it is not afraid of prints, but the dust sticks to it quite actively.

Keyboard

The ultrabook uses a full-size keyboard. There is not a single squeezed letter key here, and even [e] has not suffered a drop. The arrow keys have been slightly reduced, but this has not particularly affected the usability. The travel of the keys, the noise from their operation, the clarity of the moment of actuation - in all this the tested laptop is incredibly good.

Here are just the base of the keyboard bends anywhere, even with rather weak pressure. Of course, if you do not focus on this (especially when typing blindly), it is not noticeable at all, because the keyboard itself is extremely good. But one has only to look at the keys while typing, and all the delight from the convenience of work vanishes, because the base bends decently when you press any of the keys.

However, the keyboard also has a significant plus, namely the backlighting of the keys, which is automatically activated in low light conditions. If you do not use the keyboard for a while, the backlight will turn off regardless of the presence or absence of external lighting. Unfortunately, despite the presence of a light sensor, the brightness level of the keyboard backlight is not automatically adjusted, so when typing in the dark with a low brightness level of the display, the keyboard backlight is a little distracting.

Touchpad

The touch panel is truly gigantic, its dimensions are 105x65 mm. Of course, such an indicator was achieved due to the "buttonless" design, but still it is worth writing it down in the merits of the device. Key travel is stiff and short, and the actuation noise is quite high. Unfortunately, the surface of the device is not very smooth, which makes the touchpad not very pleasant to use.

There is a webcam on the top edge of the display. The microphones fit on the side of the display, in its upper part.

⇡ Delivery set

The traditional set of brochures and booklets is not particularly interesting, so it's not even worth listing them. Special attention should be paid to a tiny charger, complemented by a USB connector, which is suitable for charging a variety of gadgets. You can also connect a Sony VGP-WAR100 miniature router to it. There is an Ethernet port on one side of this router, and a USB connector on the other. There is a Wi-Fi module inside the router that supports WPS technology, which will greatly simplify the setup of a network connection.

Frequent travelers know that wireless Internet in hotels leaves much to be desired in most cases. The cable connection is usually much better, but having to sit next to the outlet is not a very happy prospect. So that such a convenient possibility of organizing your own Wi-Fi network, with a fast connection and a personally selected level of protection, will be considered by many a serious advantage. But the range of the built-in antenna for such a miniature router is small.

The package also includes an HDMI-D-Sub (VGA) adapter. The use of a router and an adapter is a necessary measure, because with such a thin device, the Ethernet and D-Sub ports simply would not fit on the side of the ultrabook.
