Screen and sound

One could say that the display in the Galaxy S8 + is typical for Samsung, if not for the new format, new diagonal and new resolution. Only the highest quality of performance and Super AMOLED technology remained habitual. Due to the unusual aspect ratio, the resolution also looks unusual - 1440 × 2960. Plus 400 points in height compared to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note 7. I talked about the obvious advantages of this format above. It's worth adding here that the 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 and the 6.2-inch Galaxy S8 + have the same resolution. Therefore, the pixel density of the smaller model is higher - 570 versus 529 ppi. But such a difference, in principle, cannot be noticed with the naked eye.

Display settings allow you to change the screen resolution while maintaining the aspect ratio. You can choose from three options: 1480 × 720, 2220 × 1080 and 2960 × 1440. By default, all smartphones use the maximum resolution.

Contrast AMOLED tends to infinite value, it is impossible to measure it. The maximum brightness turned out to be high enough for an OLED display - 407 km / m 2. This is a bit against the background of typical IPS displays, but thanks to the relatively infinite contrast ratio, there are no problems with the readability of the Galaxy S8 +. Direct sunlight does not interfere with reading or watching video from the screen at all.

Viewing angles are maximum, brightness does not change when viewed from an acute angle, in some cases a slight, subtle color distortion is noticeable. You can customize the color reproduction of the screen using four presets. By default, the screen works in adaptive mode, and besides it there are "AMOLED photos", "AMOLED video" and the main one - for the purity of the experiment, testing was carried out in adaptive and basic modes alternately.

Purely visually, the picture in adaptive mode looks clearer, richer and cooler. I think that most potential Galaxy S8 + owners will never use other modes. The graphs above show that the color temperature is kept in the region of 7700-7800 K, which is noticeably higher than the norm of 6500 K. And the average deviation of Delta E in colors and shades of gray is 5.20, which is also far beyond the norm. However, the average gamma turns out to be quite good - 2.23.

In the basic mode, the color reproduction is clearer. The display narrows the color gamut - it matches the sRGB space, and the color temperature is kept near the optimal value. As a result, color accuracy is improved.

The Galaxy S8 + display is ideal for these values. The gamma is 2.28, the color temperature is approximately 6600 K, and the average deviation of Delta E according to the Color Checker table is only 3.05. In general, such a screen will completely satisfy even those who are used to working professionally with graphics. Perhaps with such a display diagonal on the Galaxy S8 +, it will even be possible to process photos on the road. Or at least do presetting in mobile Lightroom.

But in terms of galaxy sound The S8 + makes a double impression. On the one hand, it doesn't have a second speaker, so it only sounds in mono. On the other hand, it uses a high-quality DAC from Wolfson, and comes with very good AKG headphones.

Hardware and performance

As with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy Note 7, Samsung uses two hardware platforms. The S8 / S8 + are entering the American market with Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, and in Russia and Europe - with the Exynos 8895, this is the version that came to us for testing. The reasons for this approach lie in compatibility with LTE networks - the Qualcomm modem is more omnivorous. And in terms of performance, there should be no dramatic difference, both platforms guarantee the highest possible performance.

The result in AnTuTu 5 turned out to be suspiciously low, in all likelihood the point is poor optimization of the benchmark and its "inept" handling of the new platform. But in the sixth version of this package, the result is impressive. Although, I must admit, I did not expect anything different from the top-end Samsung device.

Volume random access memory was not a record: only 4 GB versus 6 GB for some Chinese flagships, but this does not affect performance. What's more, the new Galaxy easily beats the competition with increased RAM. The microSD slot supports media up to 256GB. In the dual SIM version, you still have to choose between a second carrier card and memory expansion. However, looking at how compact the case with a 6.2-inch screen turned out to be, there is no doubt that the engineers simply did not have enough internal space in order to implement a dedicated slot for a second SIM card.

I will add that the device heats up a little during heavy tasks, namely, when running the 3DMark SlingShot Extreme test, which we do not include in standard program testing. However, there are no problems with overheating and spontaneous reboots that the Galaxy Note 7 suffered from. There are no reports of spontaneous combustion of the smartphone during the charging process, it is clear that the company has found out the true reasons for this phenomenon and completely eliminated them in the new smartphone.

Communication and wireless communications

The flagship Samsung Galaxy continues to deliver outstanding communication capabilities. Last year's Galaxy S7 still looks very cool, but in the new flagship everything is even a little better. So, for example, the maximum data download speed through an LTE modem is now 1 Gbps. The Bluetooth module supports the 5.0 standard, which provides faster data transfer rates, slightly longer range and slightly less power consumption. Always-on Bluetooth does not have a noticeable impact on battery life, unlike Always-On Display.

The GPS module received support from the European Galileo system, however, during testing, not a single satellite belonging to the European Space Agency was found. There are no problems with GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou - the smartphone quickly finds about 20 satellites and provides positioning accuracy up to 3-5 meters.

The dual SIM version works in dual standby mode due to the presence of one radio module, but this is a completely common practice. Firstly, this allows you to achieve better autonomy, and secondly, today almost no one has a real need for the simultaneous use of two SIM-cards.

Camera and shooting

It seems that the main camera of the flagship was not included in the upgrade program this time. At the very least, its specifications do not show any improvement over the Samsung Galaxy S7. The resolution remains the same (12 Mp), the aperture has not changed (f / 1.7), and there is no movement in the autofocus part. However, nothing cooler than hybrid focusing in mobile cameras still no.

The mode of accelerated video recording with a frequency of up to 1000 frames per second, which was mentioned in various sources, did not appear. And if you take into account the technical characteristics of the camera, there were no prerequisites for its appearance. The quality of photography is still impressive, but it seems that Samsung has done a little work on the algorithms for processing the resulting image. The result looks a little different from the Galaxy S7, but it's still pretty cool.

A quick comparison of the shooting quality of the Galaxy S8 + and iPhone 7 Plus shows the clear superiority of the Korean flagship. You can see a few examples below. We'll talk about how the Galaxy S8 + compares to the Huawei P10 Plus and LG G6 in a separate article.

The front camera has got autofocus and slightly increased in resolution, when compared with the Galaxy S7 - it was 5 megapixels, and now it is 8. However, the impression of self-portraits is spoiled a little by an aggressive auto-enhancer.

In the settings, of course, you can turn it off, but in practice, the effect of blurring the skin texture is always applied, you can only influence its intensity. The front camera does not have a separate LED flash, it is replaced by a screen, which "lights up" for a second in maximum brightness mode. This backlight can vary in hue from yellowish to bluish to achieve accurate white balance in most conditions.

Autonomous work

The different body sizes on the Galaxy S8 and S8 + cause a noticeable difference in battery capacity. The small model has 3000 mAh, the large one has 3500 mAh, that is, 11.4 and 13.3 Wh, respectively. The last flagship performed well in our battery life test of 877 minutes. This was close to the record results at the time. Only smartphones with "thick" batteries, modest in technical characteristics, could compete with it, no flagship could oppose anything. Things have only changed for the better since then, with the Samsung Galaxy S8 + delivering even more impressive results. A test involving playing an HD video in MX Player at maximum screen brightness with an active Wi-Fi connection gave a result of 16 hours and 20 minutes.

This result is achieved thanks to excellent optimization, video playback is not a resource-intensive task for Samsung. But in reality, the smartphone does not show anything supernatural - it allows you to work from early morning until late at night without the need to use charger... At the same time, you do not need to worry about anything at all - you can play games, watch movies, listen to music and trust automatic adjustment brightness. In a more economical mode (no games and no long phone calls), the Galaxy S8 + lasts for two days. But the new PCMark test, which creates a high and very varied load on the central and graphic processor, showed a result of 6 hours 42 minutes. Which, in principle, is also very good, but it does not pull a record.

Samsung has carefully included a Quick Charge adapter in the package, with which the battery charges in less than an hour and a half, and gains 60% charge in just 30 minutes. There is also wireless charging, but the adapter will have to be purchased separately for it.

What's the bottom line?

We have to admit that the Samsung Galaxy S8 + is the best Android smartphone out there right now. Neither, nor, presented at MWC 2017, aroused such obvious sympathy. But some points still do not allow me to fully name the new one Galaxy perfect... The most obvious miscalculation is the location of the fingerprint scanner. Of course, you can get used to it, just as you can put up with shoes two sizes smaller. But it won't get any better. The iris scanner and the face recognition function are good and useful things, but if we talk about the unlocking speed, the first is much inferior to the fingerprint sensor, and the second does not provide adequate security (you can unlock the smartphone without any problems using a photograph of its owner). Even before the official premiere of the S8 +, there were rumors that until the last moment Samsung had tried to embed the sensor directly into the screen, in place of the Home button, and that this was the reason for the slight delay in the announcement, but which of end users is it seriously worried? Another controversial point is the absence of a second system speaker and, as a result, sound reproduction only in mono mode. But in my world, this is rather a plus - the fewer people around who break the silence with sounds from their smartphones, the better.

Samsung's AMOLED screen remains unrivaled. And if the iPhone 7 Plus boasts extremely accurate color reproduction, then in all other respects its screen looks like a relic of the past against the background of the Galaxy S8 +. But most importantly, the Koreans managed to do the almost impossible. The S8 + is the only smartphone in the world with a screen over 6 inches that can be called compact.

Is a large, rounded screen really useful in life? A question of emotion - but also of utility. Samsung has "hung" on the right side of the already traditional Edge widget with shortcuts, plus quick access to favorite contacts.

Performance and Android. When it works faster than an iPhone

I was looking at various tests here before I took my Galaxy S8. Allegedly, the iPhone 7 is still faster than it.

Only in real life did I notice the exact opposite. I am faster with the Galaxy S8. And noticeably faster.

First of all, all my apps load faster on the Galaxy S8 than on the iPhone 7. Slack, Skype, Facebook Messenger, Chrome, YouTube, bank and taxi apps, maps and navigators are installed - about 20 apps in total. They start earlier, give you typing and commands faster.

Secondly, it turns out to work more cheerfully because of bells and whistles TouchWiz and Android... TO quick access you instantly get used to all programs through the curtain, Edge shorts, a normally working and really smart assistant.

And here you can leave running windows of different applications on the same screen and use them simultaneously - convenient for copy-paste and work with docks.

Thirdly, Android itself allows you to customize the system exactly the way you want. And I'm not talking about visual bells and whistles, such as shells - but about the logic of the system and hardware. You're in control of the Android world, and it's refreshing after Apple's indoor garden.

Last week I wanted to program two NFC tags. The iPhone can't do that, because Apple doesn't give users access to the NFC module. And the Galaxy S8 coped with an app downloaded directly from Google Play in a couple of seconds.

It suggested that, unlike the iPhone, buying an Android flagship gives us full access to all the hardware in the device, allowing us to manage everything and everything, squeezing the most out of the money spent. This, among dozens of other reasons, justifies spending 50 thousand rubles on the Galaxy S8.

With such performance and sophistication, it turned out to be a matter of one day to change to the S8. The programs were downloaded from the store in 10 minutes, the settings were set in another 2 minutes. During the day I got used to the new shorts.

The lack of a hardware upgrade does not upset here: first, the software has been updated; secondly, Samsung had a killer camera back then, and you don't have to change it for another year.

We will look at the Samsung Galaxy S8 somewhat later, but now let's dwell on its appearance. The new model inherited the basic design lines of the S7 edge and Note 7. The manufacturer decided to abandon the wide bezels around the display, which puts the S8 on a level above most of the competitors. The company managed the impossible in a compact case: 148.9x68.1 mm fit a large 5.8-inch display.

Thanks to a new approach, it occupies 84.26% of the front panel of the device. In this regard, the company called its screen “endless”. Its side ends are slightly bent, which makes it feel like you are holding only one display in your hands. The Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone turned out to be truly innovative, because the manufacturer did not limit itself to one frame. Through the efforts of the world's leading experts, an impressive design has been developed. All elements are made in the same style, and the rounded corners and edges perfectly complement appearance... The corners of the screen are rounded to fit the shape of the case. The corporate logo will no longer flaunt on the front side, because the smartphone is already recognizable.

The new Samsung Galaxy S8 64gb from the back is not so expressive, but there is also a recognizable style and symmetry here. The camera module now does not protrude beyond the body, and on the sides of it are LED backlighting, a heart rate sensor and a fingerprint scanner. The latter is not very conveniently located. The back and front panels are covered by Gorilla Glass 5, and the ends are made of metal to give the body rigidity. They are now polished and painted in the overall color of the case, which completes the design. Due to this, the impression is formed that the device consists entirely of glass.

The Home key senses pressure and vibrates to confirm every action, so it can be easily groped blindly soon after purchasing. In the settings, you can set your own location of the control keys.
The case is equipped with protection against water and dust according to the modern IP68 standard. This means that it can be lowered to a depth of 1 meter under water and up to 30 minutes.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 screen is the first thing that catches your eye. It occupies most of the front surface, and its diagonal is 5.8 inches. As before, the manufacturer uses a Super AMOLED matrix in its technology, but this time the resolution turned out to be non-standard - 2960 × 1440 pixels with an innovative aspect ratio of 18.5: 9. In the parameters, you can select the mode of shaping colors, making them more saturated or realistic. Our testing showed excellent factory calibration with a warm bias, virtually perfect gamut and even backlighting. If desired, you can activate the "Blue Filter" in the menu.

Another feature is the ability to select the display resolution - HD (1480 × 720), FullHD (2220 × 1080) or WQHD (2960 × 1440). If you set the maximum resolution, the pixel density per inch will be 570, which is more than enough. There is no question of any pixel grid, it is impossible to see it. It's not even in HD. It should be noted that lowering the resolution greatly increases the autonomy, which is associated with a reduced load on the processor. FullHD can be called optimal, higher resolution is required except for VR glasses.

A review of the Samsung Galaxy S8 2017 showed that there is an interesting function of displaying certain information on the locked display that the user chooses. It was possible to implement it due to the fact that in AMOLED panels, each pixel is highlighted separately. The function has been slightly improved.
