In this material, we will tell you how to check battery wear on an iPhone using applications for iOS and programs for Windows and macOS. Checking Battery Wear Using iOS Apps

The easiest way to check the battery level on an iPhone is to use iOS applications that are available in the AppStore. Here you will see two parameters: Capacity and Battery Charge. The “Battery Charge” parameter is simply the current charge level of your iPhone, it’s not interesting. But the “Capacity” parameter is more interesting. It shows the current capacity of your battery (2400 mAh in the screenshot) and the original capacity of your battery (2750 mAh in the screenshot).

It is the difference between these values ​​that is calculated as a percentage. The greater the difference between the current and original capacity, the worse the condition of the battery.

Checking the battery using the Windows program iBackupBot

If you want to get more detailed information about your iPhone's battery wear, you can use desktop programs. For operating room Windows systems there is a program called . It is paid and costs $35, but for the first 7 days you can use it for free.

To check the level of battery wear using iBackupBot, launch it on your computer and connect your iPhone using a cable. After this, you need to wait a little while the program detects the device and creates its profile. The number of charge and discharge cycles of the battery is another very important parameter that indicates battery wear. The more cycles the battery has gone through, the worse its condition. If your battery has more than 500 cycles, then it's time to think about replacing it.

Checking your battery using the macOS CoconutBattery program

If you have a computer with an operating system macOS system, then you can check the battery wear using the program. The main purpose of this program is to view information about the MacBook battery, but it can also provide information about connected iOS devices(iPhone, iPad, etc.).

To use this method of checking your battery, simply connect your iPhone to your computer, launch the CoconutBattery program and go to the “iOS Device” section.

As a result, a screen with information about the iPhone battery will appear in front of you. The current battery charge level (Current Charge), maximum battery capacity (Full Charge Capacity), initial battery capacity (Design capacity), number of battery charging cycles (Cycle Count), as well as other parameters will be indicated here.

As you can see, the amount of information here is almost the same as in the iBackupBot program.

Not long ago, Apple representatives gave iOS the ability to control battery consumption. Some smartphones are now slowing down to counteract the possibility of unexpected shutdowns. This is directly related to the wear and tear of the device’s battery, its capacity and the charge-discharge cycles of the Apple device.

A short digression: Why and why worn-out batteries “Slow down iPhones”

This is the percentage ratio between the actual (full charge capacity) and design capacities.

It is important to point out that, according to reports from some users, coconutBattery shows correct data on the level of battery wear until the device is restored. We can conclude that this is due to a factory reset.

Method 2. Use third-party applications to analyze iPhone battery parameters

The battery capacity of my iPhone 7 Plus, which I bought about a year ago (important: I stopped using it when I upgraded to the iPhone 8 Plus), has decreased by 10%. As for my iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, the program showed that the condition of their batteries and the level of wear are ideal.

    Step 3: Check Raw Data

Click on the hamburger menu at the top and then on Raw Data. This way you will know the capacity of your battery.

You can see in the screenshot below that my iPhone 7 Plus battery capacity is 2,600 mAh, which is just under 90% of the original capacity (which is 2,900 mAh).

Some iPhone users claim that the application shows the capacity with errors. It is possible that in such a situation, as in the case of coconutBattery, the main culprit is the recent restoration of your iPhone.

Make sure that your iPhone is unlocked and that it is trusted for your computer.

In the Console app search box, type “batteryhealth.” In the left column, click on your iPhone. You will immediately see the status of your battery. The app shows that my iPhone X's battery health is good (BatteryHealth = Good).

Console app works inconsistently. I found out the condition without difficulty iPhone batteries X, however I was unable to perform the same procedure on the iPhone 7 Plus.

Method 4. Settings App – Explore iPhone settings

Starting with iOS 10.2.1, Apple issues notifications in the battery status section indicating that operating system diagnostics should be carried out.

New Apple function, which allows you to monitor your battery status, has finally appeared in the recently released final version iOS 11.3. And it turned out not to be what we expected. The new section does not have the usual switch that can be used to disable the power management function. There is also no slider with which you can control how much the device's performance slows down. The Battery Health feature is a typical Apple feature in some ways. It is as simple as possible, but very incomprehensible and does not provide any control.

The thing is that iOS 11.3 allows you to turn off the power management feature, but not using a regular switch. You'll have to look for a small "Disable" icon among the text. Additionally, the feature will reactivate after your device suddenly shuts down under heavy load.

There is some good news. Once you update to iOS 11.3, which will be released at the end of March, the power management feature will automatically turn off. Your iPhone should start working again full power. It is likely that for many users, smartphones will begin to work noticeably better.

However, the feature will reactivate when something goes wrong. For example, if the maximum battery capacity becomes significantly less or the smartphone begins to turn off under heavy load.

According to Apple, the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X can already avoid sudden shutdowns when their battery loses its initial capacity, so they are not affected by the feature.

When you enter Settings -> Battery, you will find a new section Battery Status (Beta).

Here you will see two items - Maximum capacity And Peak Performance. The maximum capacity is the state of your iPhone's battery. On a new smartphone it will be 100%, but over time the figure will begin to fall.

According to Apple, maximum battery capacity drops to 80% after 500 full charges under normal conditions. That is, as long as the maximum capacity of your smartphone is more than 80%, everything is fine? Not really. Peak performance should also be taken into account.

As a battery's capacity decreases, so does its ability to handle peak performance. Then the old models begin to suddenly turn off. At moments of peak performance, the processor requires more power than the battery can provide, and the iPhone simply turns off. In iOS 11.3, battery capacity will be balanced with the needs of peak performance.

Below is the Peak Performance item. There are no indicators in it. Instead, you'll see text telling you your peak performance level. If you have new iPhone, peak performance will be normal.

But, if the battery capacity has dropped to 90% and it is not capable of delivering peak performance, you will see a message like this:

If your battery's maximum capacity drops below 80%, you will see this message:

The condition of your battery has deteriorated significantly. Replace it to restore full capacity and performance.

How to disable the power management feature

See the blue word Disable(Disable) at the end of the text? This is the only way to disable the power management feature. Once you disable the feature, you will see the following message:

By disabling the feature, you won't be able to enable it yourself, but it will activate itself after your iPhone fails to cope with the load again and turns off. Then you can turn it off again in the settings.

Change battery

If your battery's maximum capacity drops below 80%, Apple will prompt you to replace it. You can also continue to use your iPhone as usual, but it may turn off periodically and the battery will drain faster. It's better to replace the battery with a new one. Until the end of 2018 you can do this at a discount. Due to discounts, the number of batteries is very limited, so you may have to wait longer than usual.

What could be better

The new section is definitely a first step in the right direction (albeit a late one). However, Apple could have done more. For example, the power management function still automatically turns on itself without notifying the user. Apple should have added a notification when the feature was activated.

Additionally, Apple could have made the process of disabling the feature much simpler and clearer. You won’t see the little word “Disable” right away. The text is very small and difficult to read. We hope that in the future Apple updates this will fix it.

Not everyone will want to switch from iOS 10 to their old iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 for the sake of this feature. We all know how it works and it's better to stay longer old version operating system.

  2. open it and the status of your battery is written to you.
