Jabra Halo Smart review: long-playing bluetooth headphones. Jabra Halo Smart Stereo Headset Review: Bluetooth Long-Liver Jabra Halo Smart Speaking Contact Name

For several years in a row, I have been closely following the development of the audio component of modern devices. Today, Apple has started ditching 3.5mm. connectors, in the wake of her, and many Chinese manufacturers took this step. Moreover, the latest models of Hi-Fi players also began to support wireless interfaces... This is true, we live in a time when wires are a thing of the past. And even the most seasoned adherents of connectors will agree that there are many situations in which wires get in the way, and ultra-high sound quality fades into the background, yielding to convenience. Playing sports, listening to music on public transport, and simply, if you have warm clothes in the winter - here the wireless sound definitely wins. As you probably already guessed, today we will talk about a new wireless headset from Denmark - Jabra Halo Smart.

UNPACKING AND PACKAGING

Jabra Halo Smart packaging is refined and stylish. On the front there is a large photo in which we see the headset "in action", so we can immediately understand whether this model is right for us or if we should look in the direction of a different form factor. It is also indicated here that the headset is suitable for calls and music and produces amazing sound. Yes, there are no “Chinese promises” like Hi-Fi or Lossless. Modest and very correct - "Amazing Sound". I drew attention to this immediately and I consider such a move worthy of respect.

On the back and side faces there is information about the main characteristics of the device and a smartphone application that expands the functionality of the device.

The box opens to look like a book. I am sure that the Jabra employees broke their heads over the design of the box, but I personally did not understand how to remove the headphones from the package right away. I think a simple label “open here” would have made the first perception of the product much more complete. In my case, the box was slightly damaged when I tried to remove the headset.

The kit included a nice cloth carrying case made in the corporate black and yellow colors, a MicroUSB charging cable, a package of documentation, including in the correct Russian language, a warranty card and three pairs of additional ear pads, completely different from those already on the device ...

The additional earpieces are quite good, but they turned out to be small for my ears, so I will note another advantage of the headset - the versatility of the earpads. My Sony and Vsonic ear tips fit perfectly, so no matter what your ear canal, you can always find the right ear cushions.

DESIGN / ERGONOMICS

The Jabra Halo Smart wireless headset is completely made of plastic and consists of an anatomically shaped neckband, noodle wire and the cups themselves.

On the back of the arc there is the manufacturer's logo, on the bottom - service information and a hermetically sealed MiroUSB slot for charging the device.

One of the features of the Jabra Halo Smart is the flexible neckband, which allows you to comfortably adjust the headset to fit almost any neck. Frankly, I have a rather massive neck and I was a little worried about this, but as it turned out - in vain. The arc fits perfectly, and due to its flexibility and memory effect, it is securely fixed on the neck even when doing active sports.

At first glance, the very presence of an arc seems unjustified, but there is one but. The arc design itself contains a very capacious 230mAh battery, which allows you to talk for 17 hours or enjoy music for about 15. In standby mode, the headset is generally able to work for 22 days, and this is really very important. During testing, I often frankly forgot to turn off the headset and the next day, getting ready for business, I automatically took it with me, without taking care of charging at all. And in this mode, the Jabra Halo Smart worked for me for more than a week, and the battery was not yet discharged, simply for fear of an unplanned end of charge. And yes, the headset really works for a very long time.

The second thing I was able to check was the presence of IP54 protection. The neck part of the headset was successfully submerged in water, the headset itself was used in the rain, and despite all this, it still works amazingly.

On the right side of the arc there are three rubberized buttons with a sharp, pleasant click: volume up (next track), volume down (previous track) and a call answer button (play / pause).

On the left side is the only button responsible for calling the assistant, for iOS it's Siri, for Android - Google Now. I am sure there will be business people who will appreciate the ability to search the Internet and issue commands to the system on the go.

A microphone with wind and water resistance is located next to the button. Everything said in the characteristics is true - talking in a strong wind is almost as easy as in a complete calm. The quality of the conversation is somewhat lower than that of music, but it is quite sufficient for telephone conversations.

On the back of the arc is an LED indicator that takes on three colors: red (off), blue (search for a smartphone) and green (on). To turn the device on or off, you need to hold down the answer button, after which you can feel the vibration in the cervical arch and hear a message in English about the status of the connection to the smartphone. Vibration is more like jolts - a very nice tactile addition to the audio functionality.

Another surprise from Jabra is the presence of two pairs of magnets for attaching the cups. The first pair is hidden in the arc and allows you to fix the cups on it, the second allows you to fasten the cups to each other, forming a kind of chain.

This is how, in my opinion, it is most convenient to attach the cups when the headset is not in use. In addition, the process of bonding - unpinning itself works out as an answer to a call and a call reset, depending on the situation. How convenient is it? After talking, it is enough to connect the cups on the magnets and be sure - the reset will happen. This can be very useful in the case of curious people who, after the call, continue to persistently listen to something.

The cups also have an anatomical shape and fit comfortably inside the ear, while sound insulation is excellent.

Two compensation holes are visible on the front, the sound guides are covered with a metal mesh. The diameter of the drivers is 10 mm.

INTERFACE

To expand the functionality of the headset, Jabra has released additional software, consisting of the Jabra Service service part and the interface part - Jabra Assist.

The point of this application is to add the ability to read messages and emails while using the headset. The Pico TTS voice engine is used by default, but it does not support Russian, so I installed on mine Android smartphone Google Text-to-Speech application.

SOUND

Speaking about the sound of Jabra Halo Smart, it is necessary to immediately clarify the absence of the Apt-X codec, for the so-called Lossless Bluetooth. Testing was carried out on meizu smartphone MX4 Pro with top-end SABER ES9018K2M DAC and TI OPA1612 professional amplifier. In my case, with a Bluetooth connection, the signal was processed by the AAC codec - this is a completely universal codec with a quality superior to the now popular MP3, but I consider it unnecessary to download Flac and APE for listening on the Jabra Halo Smart.

The sabbass is deep, contoured, leaving the bass in a basic rhythmic position. The bass is slightly raised, but this is done truly exquisite - there is just as much of it as you need. I am sure that all lovers of the correct bass will be satisfied with it. The mids and highs are in place. Detailing, for a bluetooth headset with AAC codec - good quality. The overall sound quality of the Jabra Halo Smart is very good.

CONCLUSIONS

Drawing conclusions, we must pay tribute to Jabra, they really managed to do something completely unique: a vibration motor, control through an assistant, reading messages in any language, and all this is sealed by excellent operating time and good sound quality. To summarize briefly - I had no doubts whether I would keep the headset for myself - definitely yes!

Thank you all for your attention! The headset can be purchased from the company's partners:

Jabra is not the first brand that comes to mind when it comes to wireless stereo headsets. Monophonic headsets "for work" are another matter, in this market segment the company has long been one of the leaders. But with wireless headphones, allowing you to listen to music in good quality, Jabra (at least for me) has never been associated.

Yes, seven years ago the first Jabra Halo headset came out - on-ear Bluetooth headphones in a futuristic foldable design. Then there was Halo 2, and this year the line was continued with the more traditional Halo Fusion in the collar plus earplugs form factor popular over the past few years. The Jabra Halo Smart headset continues this story, but with a different design, record battery life, higher sound quality and several original engineering tricks.

Firstly, there is an interesting design - matte black plastic of the neckband and headphone cases is combined with blue or red color accents of “flat” wires and the same color inserts inside the rubber nozzles. And for supporters of a more business style, there is an all-black model.

It is a pity that the plastic of the collar and the headphone cases is too utilitarian, “cheap” to the touch (at the ends of the “collar” where the buttons are located, the plastic is more pleasant, soft-touch). Large gaps between the parts that make up the neck mount do not add premium to a device with a recommended price of 5,990 rubles.

The weight of the headset - 38 grams - does not tire, you quickly stop noticing the device. But you notice when it starts to vibrate with an incoming call - so you definitely won't miss a call. On both sides of the neck attachment there are flexible zones that allow you to open the arch of the "collar" wider so that it does not rest against the neck, or, conversely, narrow it down to hold it more securely:

The developers also used magnets in an interesting way - they are built on both sides into the ears of the mount and into the headphone cases. Accordingly, you can magnetise the "ears" to the mount so that they do not dangle, or connect both headphones on the chest. The magnets are strong enough to hold the connection while walking.

Moreover, when you connect the headphones on your chest, the music playback is paused (unfortunately, magnetising them to the neckband does not work that way), and uncoupling the connected headphones during an incoming call automatically accepts it. It is convenient - you do not need to additionally reach for the control buttons. But in order to always be able to use this function, you will have to get into the habit of connecting the “ears” on the chest.

In addition to the "magic" magnetic connection, the headset has four controls: on the right side of the mount there is the on / off call / pause button, the "louder" and "quieter" buttons (while holding them, we switch tracks in the player), and on the right side there is a button with the microphone icon, which calls Siri (on iOS), Google Now (Android) or Cortana (Windows 10 and 10 Mobile, does not work with Russian yet). During a call, pressing this key will temporarily disable the microphone.

With the voice transmission, the headset is in complete order, the interlocutors, when asked about the quality of the connection, invariably answered that everything was ok. The microphone additionally has a windscreen so that the voice quality does not deteriorate outdoors. Rain (or sweat during training) Jabra Halo Smart is also not terrible (dust and moisture protection rating IP54), but you should not go to the shower in it.

Now about how the Jabra Halo Smart plays music. Plays decently, better than many and no worse than others. In the presence of quite convincing bass, and mids in a wide range, and clear-ringing highs are also not forgotten. The sound is great for jazz, RnB or complex electronica, but noisy rock can turn into an acoustic mess in the midrange. But this is, by and large, the nagging of the owner of spoiled ears. The sound of the Jabra Halo (yes, not audiophile) is still noticeably better than in regular headphones, even in flagship smartphones.

And one more thing: in order to fully appreciate the sound of the 10-mm headset drivers, it is very important to choose the size of the replaceable earbuds (in the box, in addition to the default “medium” ones, there are 3 more options: XS, S and L) so that they sit as securely as possible ... The default size was best in my ears, but also not perfect - if you turn your head or chew, the fit of the “plugs” quickly breaks. The rest of the size generally fell out almost immediately. What can I say - I just had no luck with the anatomy, the comfort of wearing any “plugs” strongly depends on the structure of the ear.

Now about, perhaps, the strongest side of the Jabra Halo Smart - autonomy. The manufacturer promises up to 22 days of standby time, up to 17 hours of talk time and up to 15 hours of music playback. Testing has confirmed that, in general, there is no reason not to trust these statements - listening to music in the headset for an hour or two every day, I could not completely discharge it in a week.

Of course, for people who have to make a lot of calls, one charge of the device will hardly be enough for a week. But you can discharge Halo Smart in one day, unless you play music in it from early morning until late at night (your ears won't say thank you for this, take care of your hearing from a young age). None of the devices of the same class and price can boast of such autonomy. The headset does not charge very long, an hour and a half.

It remains to talk about the Jabra Assist app - there are for iOS and Android, in the case of Android, there are much more possibilities - one of those cases where the limitations of iOS really upset. The program (in addition to Jabra Assist itself, for Android you will need to install another one, the system Jabra Service) in the form of a notification in the system shutter displays the remaining battery charge and can warn you of a low battery with a separate notification.

You can set up voice reading of messages from SMS, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger (Russian supported), messages email and upcoming calendar events. For iOS, only the calendar and reading the message sender header are available (you need to set up an account in the application, it works only with IMAP). Finally, there is a headset search function - it saves the last location of the device, which can be viewed in the application. You can also search for Halo Smart by making it play a high-frequency sound that is clearly audible even from a distance (in the application, the function is called "Beacon").

the iOS version also seems to be able to do a lot of the above, but in my case (iPhone 6s Plus on iOS 10.0.1) there was no charge indication or headset search function - only settings for reading mail and calendar, tips for use and a guide user.

In general, the headset turned out to be functional, perfectly suitable for both “work” and “for music”, most of all I was pleased with the high autonomy and the chip with magnets. I would like, however, that the device for 6,000 rubles had a more accurate design and more pleasant materials, in addition, it was upset by the fact that many of the declared capabilities in the iOS application were in fact upsetting (maybe the point is that the software is not ready for iOS 10?)

Design, construction

Jabra is soon launching a very interesting product called Elite Sport, two miniature in-ear headphones with protection from water, sweat, I look forward to being on sale and will be happy to prepare a review.

But today we will talk about the basic model called Jabra Halo Smart, in my opinion, this is an ideal city headset, suitable for getting around using public transport, walking, office use or other places. About public transport, I think my point is clear - there are no wires sticking out here. About the office too - you can not disturb others by listening to music and answer calls without holding the phone in your hands. Well, for walking, Halo Smart is suitable for the reason that it weighs little, does not interfere, it will help you listen to podcasts or some mixes. The perfect smartphone companion? I'll try to find the flaws.

The headset comes in a beautiful package with a typical Jabra design, the package contains only the essentials - the short USB cable could be longer, the earpieces in three sizes. The device is available in three colors: blue, red and black.

The form factor is typical for many modern headsets, a matte plastic headband, two sections of flat cable with miniature headphones. There are no logos or any flashy designations, in general, the headset looks simple and great, I personally really liked the design. On the right "leg" of the headband there are three buttons for controlling the headset, these are volume control and a multifunction button, it is responsible for turning on, answering a call, starting and stopping playback. When you turn on the Jabra Halo Smart for the first time, it automatically enters pairing mode, all you have to do is find it using your smartphone or other device. There were no problems connecting to the iPhone 7 and Sony Xperia XZ. The accessory works great with two gadgets at once, which was verified. The headset charge indicator is displayed on the smartphone screen.

On the left leg there is a button for using the voice assistant, if you click on this small microphone, Siri or Google service is immediately launched. The microphone is right there, there is a small area under the perforated plastic - the quality of speech transmission is not bad, in noisy conditions you can move the “leg” closer to your mouth or tilt your head. In my opinion, it would be optimal to place the microphone on the cable, but Jabra apparently had its own reasons.

To activate pairing mode, press and hold the multifunction button and the Jabra Halo Smart will inform you that it is ready to pair. And right there you will surely feel the vibration in the headband - it didn’t seem to you when various events occur, it really vibrates, such an "indication" is quite convenient and good in the city, when the smartphone is somewhere under clothes.

There are magnets on the headphones, you can "glue" them so as not to dangle, another pair of magnets is in the headband, you put the cups, and you get a kind of traveling position. Such concern is undoubtedly pleasing.

The body of the Jabra Halo Smart is protected from wind and water, as it says on the official website, in fact, we are talking about basic protection against drops, nothing more. In official sources there is not a word about use for sports purposes, but I can well recommend the gadget for such tasks. The headband does not tend to fall off the neck, sits firmly, does not fall off even during jumps. The wires do not interfere, if you pick up the attachments, then you will not feel the headphones - in general, very good for the gym. By default, the smallest attachments are installed, I advise you to change and spend five minutes on the selection, this will affect both comfort and sound.

Working hours

For charging, a regular microUSB connector is used, hidden under a cap on the headband, the declared operating time is about 17 (!) Hours, of course, this is very cool, but how does everything happen in real life? Surprisingly, something like this happens. For five days of use, one and a half to two hours a day, the headset was discharged only by Friday evening. It took about three hours to charge, used external battery, and then back into battle (for a week). Long run time - very nice feature product.

Music and sound

It seems to be headphones, but the quality of speech transmission was also quite satisfactory for me personally, you can easily communicate if it is not noisy around. The voice of the interlocutor with natural notes, in general, everything is pleasant here.

As for the music, with the basic player, the iPhone 7 Plus did not feel any super miracles, but I will not find fault with the quality either. For a Bluetooth headset, everything is very good for the money. If you want more bass - use an equalizer (there is a question for bass), but in general Halo Smart is more suitable for instrumental, pop music, for electronic it is better to choose something else.

But, I will make a reservation, unassuming users will be very satisfied.

conclusions

Retail Jabra Halo Smart costs about 5,000 rubles, I liked the product:

  • Nice design.
  • Long battery life.
  • There are magnets for earbuds and vibration for notifications.
  • Works with two devices at once.
  • Good quality speech transmission and musical opportunities (for your money).
  • The price is a huge plus.

Cons - for me there is not enough sound here, but, again, for most people, the Jabra Halo Smart will become a faithful companion in the city.
