In large apartments and houses with thick walls, it often happens that the Wi-Fi signal does not reach the corner where you like to sit with your smartphone, and this sometimes freaks out. In such cases, a Wi-Fi repeater is needed.

I was looking for one without wires, and I found it. It costs less than $ 30 with free shipping by mail, I recommend using TrackChecker to track the package. The device is simply plugged into an outlet and works.

To get started, you need to set up, which takes 5 minutes. When turned on for the first time, wiFi network Repeater 1, to which you need to connect, and then go to the repeater web interface at 192.168.10.1. In a couple of steps through the wizard, you select the network that you want to expand and specify the password for it. All.

It is recommended to place the repeater in a zone of reliable reception, otherwise you will relay the same unimportant signal as the device catches, and the speed will be limited. As for the characteristics, they are standard. The range is not inferior to a good Wi-Fi router, the device hardly introduces a delay in the signal, it is less than a millisecond. The connection speed is claimed to be 300Mbps, but in reality it is no higher than 20Mbps, which is pretty good for expanding the network for Internet access.

As a bonus, the repeater has a connector for a power cord in case there is no Wi-Fi, but there is a wired network. This repeater also has an undocumented feature - it works in the opposite direction. That is, it shares Wi-Fi over the wire. In other words, if you have a technique where there is only a wire, but there is no Wi-Fi, then you can stick the wire into a repeater, which, via Wi-Fi, will itself provide a connection between the equipment and the rest of the network. There is not a word about this in the documentation.

Repeater speed test.

As a reference, I took a powerful computer connected to the Onlime provider via a gigabit wired network through a Zyxel Keenetic Giga router. Specially spent money, turned on the turbo button for the maximum 50Mbps (20Mbps for upload). Measured with speedtest.net:

Then I took my laptop and went closer to the router and measured the speed of Zyxel over Wi-Fi:

Obviously, the router is not a bottleneck at such speeds within the margin of error.

Then I went with my laptop to the repeater and made another measurement through the router directly from this distance:

It can be seen that the speed drops slightly.

After that, at the same place, I connected to the repeater from the laptop:

It seems that the repeater does not pull more than 20Mbps.

I checked it on a large computer, which is located far from the repeater, stuck in an old Wi-Fi adapter from the bins:

So it is, the limit is 20Mbps. It is not possible to check the operation of the computer through a router via Wi-Fi, because the signal is no longer there.

With the help of a few more measurements from a laptop through a repeater, it can be seen that the delay is introduced not so much by the repeater as by the Internet provider, and it floats:

In general, the thing is good and inexpensive.

The wi-fi repeater is one of the most effective ways increase the signal propagation area. Among the large number of offers, some prefer the more expensive options from a specialty store, others do not want to pay almost double the amount for the same functions. The second only needs to figure out how to set up a wi-fi repeater from China, which will serve as an acceptable source of the Internet.

The repeater is configured via a web browser. The procedure can only be carried out through a computer, having previously established a connection between the devices.

How to connect a repeater to a PC:

  • turn on the device by plugging it into the socket. At this moment, the operation indicator will light up. It is recommended to keep the repeater at the shortest possible distance from the computer;
  • wait for the indicator light to turn on if the repeater is wireless. Otherwise, connect the devices with a cable;
  • the repeater must be among the available wireless networks, and the repeater will appear in the name. Click on the icon and select "connect";
  • when a message appears about a new router, which will offer automatic installation and setting, in the window you need to click the hyperlink with the words "connect to the network."

Upon completion, the Internet will automatically turn off, and the icon of the connected device will appear in the tray. Next, the setup of the Chinese wi-fi repeater in the interface begins.

Setting parameters

Setting up is necessary to connect to the desired wi-fi network and enable the main function - expanding the coverage area.

How to set up a wi-fi repeater from China:

  1. in the address bar of the working browser, the IP address of the repeater is clogged, which must be indicated either on it or in the instructions. To set up a wi-fi repeater from China, you can dial 192.168.10.1;
  2. in the next window, enter the word admin in both the login field and the password field;
  3. in the menu that opens, the connection mode is configured in the "wireless repeater mode" field. Select "Repeater Mode" and "AP mode" for wireless and wired connection, respectively;
  4. in the next window you need to find your wi-fi network from the proposed ones, click on it and confirm by pressing the "Apply" button. Enter the password if available;
  5. if the required network is not there, refresh the window by clicking "refresh".

On the message about successful completion, an inscription will appear: the configuration of the Chinese wi-fi repeater is completed. The interface is no longer needed, and the signal level should be at its maximum.

If there is no access to the interface

The preceding instructions describe the sequence of steps for a network with intact settings. If any changes were made, then there is a chance that you will not even get into the interface. In this case, you will need to configure the computer in advance.

a wi-fi repeater is primarily a signal repeater, and it is necessary to increase the wi-fi coverage area. From correct setting repeater depends on the quality of the outgoing signal.

Setting up a PC without access to the repeater settings:

  1. the repeater plugged into the outlet is connected to the computer with a cable. You need to find and click on the "network control center" and select "change adapter parameters";
  2. then the local network icon is pressed. By clicking on the last right click, the string "properties" is selected. In the new window, select the TCP / IPv4 setting;
  3. a menu will appear where you click "use the following IP address". After that, the following parameters are entered in the IP, mask, gateway fields: 192.168.1.111, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.10.1, respectively. This completes the setting and click "OK".

Setting up a PC without access to the repeater panel

When all actions are completed and saved, you should be successful in entering the repeater interface. It is not recommended to change the PC parameters without an urgent need, that is, without absolute confidence that they are the only snag.

For a recently purchased repeater, it will not be difficult to carry out the entire process described above, especially if there have been no changes in the computer settings before.

Many people face some problems with the instructions of products made in China, but the versatility of installing repeaters solves this problem. In this case, the result of use will be immediately noticeable in the form of a complete indicator of the level of the wi-fi signal.

Hello! Let's talk about repeaters in this article. I will try simple language tell what kind of devices they are, what repeaters are for and how to make a repeater from a regular Wi-Fi router with your own hands.

To begin with, a Wi-Fi repeater is a separate device. They are also called repeaters, or repeaters. This article will focus specifically on Wi-Fi repeaters. As I already wrote, these are separate devices, which have one task - to amplify the signal of an existing one. Wi-Fi networks.

Many manufacturers who produce routers also produce repeaters. For example, such popular companies as: Asus, Tp-Link, Linksys, Netis, etc. You can find repeaters in almost any computer hardware store, or in an online store. As I wrote above, they can be called differently: repeaters, repeaters, or repeaters. They also look different. They are usually very compact. But, there are also similar to Wi-Fi routers. Here, for example, a compact Tp-Link repeater:

But repeater TP-LINK TL-WA830RE looks like a regular router:

In fact, there are a lot of repeaters on the market. They are all different, both externally and in their functionality. And of course the price. I think that there will be no problems with the choice.

The most interesting thing is that for some reason these devices always remain in the shadows. Yes, they are certainly not as popular and in demand as Wi-Fi routers, but in many cases, they are simply not replaceable. Here are how many situations there are when, after installing a router, Wi-Fi is not available throughout the house or office. Well, the usual situation, and very common. It is in such cases that repeaters are simply irreplaceable. And instead of spending a relatively small amount on a repeater, users start to invent something: pull the router and all the cables closer to the center of the house, buy more powerful antennas, make some homemade amplifiers for Wi-Fi (of which there is no, or very little) etc.

But there are repeaters: they bought them, plugged them into the outlet in the room where the Wi-Fi network is still there, but the signal is no longer very strong, and that's it, the problems are solved.

What is there to do, if i have a dual band router (two Wi-Fi networks 2.4GHz and 5GHz)? It's very simple, if you have, then you need an appropriate repeater that can simultaneously amplify a Wi-Fi network in two bands. I wrote about such a model in the article: "".

We have already figured out what a Wi-Fi signal repeater is. There are two more questions left to deal with:

  • How do Wi-Fi repeaters work?
  • And what does a router mean in Wi-Fi repeater mode?

Wi-Fi repeater: how does it work?

I'll make a small schematic here, let's first see it:

I'm not a strong artist, but the scheme seems to be clear. We have a main Wi-Fi router that distributes the Internet over Wi-Fi. Everything is set up and works great. But, here Wi-Fi catches not throughout the house. For example, there is still Wi-Fi in the hallway, but in the kitchen the signal is already very bad, or the devices do not catch the Wi-Fi network at all. We take a repeater and turn it on in the hallway.

Even multiple repeaters can be used if necessary. I wrote in detail on setting up such a scheme in the article.

What it does: it receives the Wi-Fi signal from the main router, and passes it on. It turns out that in the kitchen we already have a very good home network signal. It relays wireless network (therefore, it is called a repeater)... The repeater simply acts as an amplifier. Its main task is to accept a certain Wi-Fi network, and transfer it further.

A few important points to consider when using a repeater:

  • If you use a repeater, then the Wi-Fi network will remain exactly one (and this is good). To be clear, your main router is distributing a network named "My_WIFI" (which does not catch all over the house)... We put a repeater, set it up (as a rule, all settings are reduced to simultaneously pressing the WPS buttons on both devices), it copies information about your network, and creates the exact same network. With the same name and password.
  • Your devices will automatically, unnoticed by you, connect to the network, the signal from which is stronger. For example, the main router is in the bedroom and the repeater is in the hallway. This means that if you are in the bedroom, you will be connected to a Wi-Fi router. And if you go to the hallway, then your phone will automatically connect to the repeater. You won't notice it.
  • All devices: phones, computers, laptops, tablets, TVs, etc. that will be connected to the main router, or repeater, will be on the same network. This means that we can customize local area network, in which all devices will participate. Or, for example, customize, and. In this case, the computer can be connected to the router, and the TV to the repeater.

Router in repeater mode

A regular Wi-Fi router can act as a repeater. True, not all models are able to do this, and not all manufacturers have this mode made well. If you have an extra router that is idle, then perhaps it can work in repeater (amplifier) \u200b\u200bmode without any problems, and increase the range of your Wi-Fi network. All you need to do is configure the router to work in the desired mode.

I have already checked the operation of the "Amplifier" mode on routers from two manufacturers: Asus and ZyXel... More specifically, on models: Asus RT-N12 + and ZyXEL Keenetic Start. You can look at the instructions for, and use. Both devices are very simple and straightforward to configure. They work stably, checked.

But, this option is not available on all routers. As far as I understand, on popular TP-Link routers, there is no repeater mode as such. There is only a bridge mode (WDS), this is a completely different mode of operation (and the purpose is different)... Only TP-Link access points can act as a repeater. I also haven't figured out D-Link routers yet, there probably is also no mode that would allow the router to simply strengthen the Wi-Fi network (I checked DIR-615 / A, I don't know how it is with other models).

The Wi-Fi Signal Repeater is a really useful device

Well, you see, it's a useful thing. But, for some reason, faced with the problem of a weak Wi-Fi network signal in their home, not many people solve the problem by buying and installing a repeater. But on the other hand, they simply ask a huge number of questions such as: "I don't have Wi-Fi in the bedroom, what should I do?", "Very weak Wi-Fi signal, help", "what settings to change in the router so that the Wi-Fi signal is stronger? " etc.

As a rule, if the signal is bad, then this cannot be corrected in any way by setting the router itself. You just have a large area of \u200b\u200bthe house that the router cannot physically cover with a signal. And also there are different walls, and interference. In such cases, installing a repeater solves all problems.

As for a conventional router, which can act as a repeater, I recommend setting up such a scheme only if you already have the router itself. If you are going to buy, then it is better to immediately buy a real repeater. A device designed specifically to expand the Wi-Fi network.

Probably, everyone is familiar with the situation when in the far corner of the apartment it is not possible to connect to the home network - such a weak signal. Or when several people are sitting on the home network, due to which the download speed drops significantly. A WiFi repeater is a great way to deal with these minor issues. What it is and how it works, you will learn from this article.

What is a repeater?

A Wi-Fi repeater, also known as an amplifier, repeater or repeater, is a device that can significantly increase the signal coverage of a network. It receives the signal from the router and ensures its further transmission. You just need to allocate an extra outlet for it and understand the network settings. Please note that you need to install the Wi-Fi repeater in the place where the main signal is still strong enough. At the very least, do the initial installation and setup in an active coverage area, and then you can move from outlet to outlet to try all the relay options and find the best one for your room.

How the repeater works

What is a Wi-Fi repeater for? The fact is that if you decide to go ahead and simply increase the signal strength of the router so that it "catches everywhere", then it will not lead to anything good. Electricity consumption will increase, the device will overheat, and as a result, everything will end in breakdown.

Another useful note: as we noted above, a repeater is often called an amplifier, but this is not entirely true. WiFi repeater does not amplify an existing signal. He just spreads it over a large area. Buying a repeater will not strengthen anything and will not make your Internet super-fast, but rather, on the contrary, will slightly reduce the speed by creating another signal propagation point. But this should not alarm you - we will consider the effect of the repeater on the speed below and explain in which cases it will be insignificant.

Do you need a repeater?

Before you go to buy a repeater, think: maybe there is another solution to the problem. We are not even talking about the above-mentioned increase in signal strength, but banal about where the router is located in the apartment. The closer to the geometric center of space your device is, the more evenly the signal will be broadcast in all directions. Also check in which direction the router antenna is directed. For horizontal distribution of the signal, it must be directed up.

What does a wi-fi repeater look like?

Meet different models amplifiers. Some in size and shape somewhat resemble charger for a mobile phone, only without a wire. For example, the model in the figure below looks like a compact curved plate with a plug for an outlet, LED indicators, an Ethernet cable port, and a reset button.

There are models that in their form do not differ much from a router.

Usually, the package also includes a manual, an Ethernet cable and a driver disk.

As easy as pie: the WPS button

Most modern devices have a magic WPS button (or QSS on some models), which ideally is designed to make life much easier, but in real life, on the contrary, sometimes interferes with using the network.

If both the router and the repeater have this button, then all you need to do is first press it on one device and then on the other. A few minutes of waiting until the Wi-Fi repeater and the router find each other, and voila - you can work. But there are recommendations where it is advised to configure the repeater manually by choosing a specific WiFi network in order, firstly, to reduce the number of failures in relaying, and secondly, to protect yourself. WPS technology is easy to hack. Therefore, it is often advised to turn off this mode altogether if you do not have to frequently connect new devices.

Also note that sometimes the WPS button is combined with the Reset function. It all depends on the duration of the press: if you hold your finger on the button longer, then instead of turning on WPS, restart the repeater, and all the settings you have set will be reset to zero.

How to set up a Wi-Fi repeater manually

For a more stable signal, it is better not to rely on WPS, but to register the entire configuration manually. Connecting a Wi-Fi repeater is actually even easier than setting up a router. First of all, plug the Wi-Fi repeater into an outlet and connect to it via a computer using a cable or Wi-Fi. Then open your browser and enter the IP address in the address bar, you will find it on the back of the repeater. The screen refreshes and an authorization form appears. There you enter your username and password: if you have not changed anything in the settings of the router, then by default it is admin / admin. A page with settings will open.

Here you can name your wi-fi repeater somehow or leave it with the factory name. The final stage - enter the password from your Wi-Fi in the required field.

What's happening with internet speed?

Sometimes there are doubts about the advisability of buying a repeater. The main argument is that the signal propagation distance increases, but the overall Internet speed decreases. The practice of using repeaters shows that speed fluctuations occur: any additional link in the Internet "distribution" chain will reduce the flow. However, the decrease, as a rule, is not so significant as to strongly affect the signal strength, and is largely determined by technical characteristics devices in the chain. In other words, the Internet will not "glitch" and "slow down" if your devices initially tenaciously catch the signal.

Router as an alternative to repeater

There is a popular belief that if you have an unnecessary but working router at home, then it is not at all necessary to purchase a WiFi signal repeater. Many models are designed so that they can perform the functions of a repeater, the main thing is to configure them correctly. This is a more time-consuming process than setting up a conventional repeater, but it is quite doable on your own. Note that it is easiest to establish a connection between two devices of the same manufacturer - the more chances that the routers will notice each other and run smoothly. The customization process itself also depends on the brand.

First, the router that you are going to use as a Wi-Fi repeater will need to be connected to the computer using a wire. Then you will need to check the adapter settings (via the "Network and general access", which can be accessed from the" Control Panel "). The device must have an IP address 192.168.1.21 with a subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

Then, as with setting up the repeater, you will need to drive the IP address from the bottom of the device into address bar... Use the standard username and password again - admin / admin. On the page that opens, you will need to find the "Wireless Mode" tab and go to the settings. We are interested in the "Enable WDS" option - this way we will create a network that will unite two routers. You also need to change the IP address of the router, which will act as a repeater, so that you can enter the configuration mode. You can simply change the last digit or add a zero after it.

After that, you need to open the list of available networks, find the required one, select it and enter the password. By the way, do not forget to protect the network on the second router so that you can also connect to it with a password. To do this, we go to "Security settings" and in the "PSK encryption key" column enter our password and save.

The router now works as a WiFi repeater. Can be detached from the computer and installed in the desired location.

Checking the connection status

After you have configured a repeater or router in repeater mode, you need to check how the wifi repeater works and how well it picks up the signal. It is advisable to check on all your devices - laptops, tablets, phones - whether they see the network that the repeater distributes, or continue to connect to the main router (for this, you can register different names in the settings). Also check if you have installed a Wi-Fi signal repeater for the router in a suitable place, whether you have achieved your goal of improving the quality of communication.

To do this, you can not just walk around the apartment with a smartphone and count the number of sticks in the connection, as everyone usually does. Download to your device one of the special applications that can check the signal strength.

Please note that if you need to expand the network coverage to a fairly large area, and even in different directions (for example, one floor below and to the next room), then most likely you will have to buy two repeaters.
