Design and ergonomics
At first glance, distinguishing the R560 from most of the more early versions Samsung laptops are difficult - the same shapes, the same glossy display lid, the same matte plastic on the ends and bottom. Indeed, the difference is mainly in the configuration, but the difference is tangible.The front edge of the case is lacquered in burgundy, which fades into black. This color combination is not new, it is used, for example, in the design of the display lid of the Toshiba Satellite X200. Another notable detail is the familiar touchpad on Samsung laptops, but it is now surrounded by a plastic frame with a chrome finish. Also, a chrome insert is installed above the keyboard unit.
It seems that there is nothing special in these innovations, but the design of the laptop has noticeably "freshened up", and this has been required for a long time. After all, all the "glossy" Samsung laptops released over the past year and a half, even with different screen diagonals, looked like twins. All in all, Samsung is actively promoting the new Crystal-Look design concept.
The build quality of the laptop is good - nothing dangles, there is no backlash in the battery mount, the joints between the case panels are small and even. However, when trying to twist and squeeze, the laptop readily creaks due to the insufficient thickness of the case panels, but the case is sufficiently rigid and does not bend when twisted. According to company representatives, the glossy finish of this model is made of a completely new material, which is less sensitive to mechanical stress... The coating does scratch less than in earlier models, but collects a variety of prints just as instantly. Therefore, the included display cleaning cloth is most often used to clean the entire case.
On the front panel there is a slot for memory cards (7-in-1) and seven icon-indicators of system status and activity (three indicators of Lock-keys, access to the hard disk, activity of network devices and power mode).
Most of the rear wall is occupied by a battery, to the left of which there is an RJ-11 connector, and to the right - two USB, RJ-45 and a jack for connecting an external power source.
The left panel houses one USB connector, a VGA port, an oversized ventilation grille, an HDMI port, a pair of standard 3.5mm audio connectors, and an ExpressCard / 54 expansion slot.
On the right side is the optical drive tray and Kensigton security lock tab. The laptop can be equipped with a TV tuner, but since it is not included in the configuration that came for testing, a plug is installed in place of the antenna connector.

Despite the fact that the laptop is "armed to the teeth" and its energy appetites and, therefore, heat generation should be quite high, the number of ventilation holes on the bottom is minimal, and they are concentrated mainly on the lid of the memory module compartment. Keyboards of all Samsung laptops, including the R560, are coated with a thin layer of positively charged silver ions - the proprietary Silver Nano technology performs an antibacterial function. A very useful feature, especially when you consider studies that claim that keyboards of mobile phones and laptops, due to the high surface temperature, are real incubators of bacteria. The laptop has a full-size keyboard with 18.5 mm letter keys. The keystrokes are soft and quiet, but the moment of actuation is indistinct, and when working with the keyboard, for greater confidence, you have to push the keys all the way. Cyrillic and Latin characters are drawn in light purple and white, respectively - this is traditional for Samsung laptops. Among the shortcomings, it is worth noting the slight deflection of the right side of the keyboard with strong pressure on the keys.

The minimum level is so low that it is not enough for work even in absolute darkness, and the maximum level is not enough not only for working outdoors on a sunny day, but sometimes we would like to have a higher brightness indoors. Noises at "idle", when listening to the melody one gets the feeling that an old gramophone is playing. Even the speaker of a mobile phone, let alone a laptop, cannot sound so bad. Of course, Samsung laptops have never been distinguished by the reference sound quality of the built-in acoustics, but after all, connecting headphones did not give any positive effect. So, everything is in order. The exhaust air temperature is 51.7 degrees Celsius - nothing supernatural. The working surface temperature ranges from 25.1 to 32.4 degrees, and the hottest point - 32.4 degrees - is located on the touch panel. The keyboard temperature is 27.4-30.2 degrees - cooler at the right edge, hotter at the left. The bottom temperature ranges from 25.3 to 35.8 degrees in the CPU area. The temperature range of the video card is from 40 to 65 degrees. Summary - we did not notice much difference from laptops on the old platform. All measurements were carried out at an ambient temperature of +21 degrees Celsius.Now - about the noise emitted by the laptop. During idle time, the noise generated by the cooling system does not exceed 34.1 dB; in case of prolonged high loads on the processor, the fan slightly increases the rotation speed, and the noise is 35.7 dB. And only at high and long-term loads on the CPU and video subsystem, the fan rarely and briefly (up to 15 seconds) spins up to maximum speed, and the noise level is 40.7 dB. Such a jump occurs extremely rarely - for example, when running the 3DMark Vantage test suite, there were only two such jumps, and the duration of each did not exceed 8 seconds, after which the noise level returned to the level of 35.0-35.7 dB. In a word - bravo! It's hard to find such a powerful and quiet laptop. All noise measurements were taken at a distance of 20 cm from the center of the front edge of the notebook.

We tested a powerful representative of the Centrino 2 notebook family - Samsung R560, equipped with an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 processor, 4 GB of RAM, a GeForce 9600M GT video card with 512 MB of GDDR-III graphics memory and a 320 GB hard drive.

The last component of the kit is less and less common in boxes with laptops from various manufacturers, and therefore, even at the stage of consideration of the package, the R560 earns a noticeable "plus".
Samsung laptop design and ergonomics
At first glance, it is difficult to distinguish the R560 from most of the earlier versions of Samsung laptops - the same shapes, the same glossy display lid, the same matte plastic on the ends and bottom. Indeed, the difference is mainly in the configuration, but the difference is tangible.
The front edge of the case is lacquered in burgundy, which fades into black.
Another noticeable detail is the familiar touch panel for Samsung laptops, it is now surrounded by a plastic frame with a chrome finish. Also, a chrome insert is installed above the keyboard unit.
It seems that there is nothing special in these innovations, but the design of the laptop has noticeably "freshened up", and this has been required for a long time.
After all, all the "glossy" Samsung laptops released over the past year and a half, even with different screen diagonals, looked like twins. All in all, Samsung is actively promoting the new Crystal-Look design concept.
The build quality of the laptop is good - nothing dangles, there is no backlash in the battery mount, the joints between the body panels are small and even.
However, when trying to twist and squeeze, the laptop readily creaks due to the insufficient thickness of the case panels, but the case is sufficiently rigid and does not bend when twisted.
According to the company representatives, the glossy coating of this model is made of a completely new material, which is less sensitive to mechanical stress.
Coverage really scratches lessthan in earlier models, but collects a variety of prints just as instantly. Therefore, the included display cleaning cloth is most often used to clean the entire case.
On the front panel there is a slot for memory cards (7-in-1) and seven pictograms-indicators of system status and activity (three indicators of Lock-keys, access to the hard disk, activity of network devices and power mode).
Most of the rear wall is occupied by a battery, to the left of which there is an RJ-11 connector, and to the right - two USB, RJ-45 and a jack for connecting an external power source.
The left panel houses one USB connector, a VGA port, an oversized ventilation grille, an HDMI port, a pair of standard 3.5mm audio connectors, and an ExpressCard / 54 expansion slot
On the right side is the optical drive tray and Kensigton security lock tab. The laptop can be equipped with a TV tuner, but since it is not in the configuration that came for testing, a plug is installed in place of the antenna connector.
The bottom provides access to two compartments - memory modules and hard drive. Despite the fact that the laptop is "armed to the teeth" and its energy appetites and, therefore, the generation of heat should be quite high.
The number of ventilation holes on the bottom is minimal, and they are mainly concentrated on the cover of the memory module compartment.
Keyboards of all Samsung laptops, including the R560, are coated with a thin layer of positively charged silver ions - the proprietary Silver Nano technology has an antibacterial function.
A very useful feature, especially when you consider studies that claim that keyboards of mobile phones and laptops, due to the high surface temperature, are real incubators of bacteria.
The laptop has full-size keyboard with letter keys width 18.5 mm.
The keystrokes are soft and quiet, but the moment of actuation is indistinct, and when working with the keyboard, for greater confidence, you have to press the keys all the way.
Cyrillic and Latin characters are drawn in light purple and white, respectively - this is traditional for Samsung laptops.
The touch panel has an average size of 70x44 mm, the size of the manipulator keys is 35x10 mm. As mentioned above, the pad is surrounded by a feel-to-touch rim, which allows you to quickly find the touchpad in the dark.
Above the keyboard unit is a pair of speakers and a power button. On the top edge of the display there is a window of a non-rotating 1.3-megapixel web camera

The display is quite contrasty and clear, but that's where the pros end. The vertical viewing angles are small, and when you deviate from the direct viewing angle, the colors quickly fade and invert, the matrix "turns yellow" a little, and when exposed to direct sunlight "fades".
There are eight levels of brightness. The minimum level is so low that it is not enough for work even in absolute darkness, and the maximum level is not enough not only for working outdoors on a sunny day, but sometimes we would like to have a higher brightness indoors.
However, the manufacturer does not hide the low brightness of the matrix - the declared brightness is only 185 cd / m2.
Sound subsystem of the laptop
The tested laptop has one of the most popular chipset audio codecs among manufacturers - Realtek ALC262, which has the following declared characteristics: four channels (according to the 2 + 2 formula) HD audio, S / PDIF, the ability to work with 24-bit / 192-kHz audio.
The signal-to-noise ratio of the ADC is 90 dB, the DAC is 100 dB. More detailed characteristics can be found on the manufacturer's website. The codec seems to be simple, but it is also used in more expensive multimedia models, for example, ASUS W2W and Toshiba Qosmio G40.
The first start of the melody is shock and quiet horror. Noises at "idle", when listening to the melody one gets the feeling that an old gramophone is playing. Even the speaker of a mobile phone, let alone a laptop, cannot sound so bad.
Of course, Samsung laptops have never been distinguished by the reference sound quality of the built-in acoustics, but plugging in headphones did not have any positive effect either.
Perhaps the default settings are to blame? Indeed, the Samsung EDS (Enhanced Digital Sound) tab is available in the sound settings.
After removing the check mark enabling various sound options, the sound of the built-in acoustics became much better - on a par with all Samsung laptops.
When testing the audio path, it was decided to carry out measurements with and without an activated Samsung EDS (speaker music mode) system.
The audio section was tested using the popular RightMark Audio Analyzer 6.0.6 test suite. (hereinafter RMAA) using the Creative E-MU 0202 USB audio interface. Default equalizer settings.

As shown by measurements, as well as our own observations, various software sound optimizers actually only worsen the overall sound picture. And this applies not only to laptops, but also to portable players and music phones.
The overall rating is "good" - not so bad for a laptop, but lovers of high-quality sound should fork out for the external audio interface.
Laptop wireless interfaces
Instead of the usual Intel WiFi Link 4965, the tested laptop has an Intel WiFi Link 5100 module - this module is required on the Centrino 2 platform. Also Samsung R560 is equipped with a Broadcom 2045 Bluetooth-module.
To configure wireless connections, both standard OS tools and Samsung's proprietary Easy Network Manager utility can be used.
Noise level and heat dissipation
It's time to remember that the laptop is built on the Centrino 2 platform, which uses processors with a lower TDP than its predecessors, which in turn means less heat and, therefore, less noise from the cooling system.
So, everything is in order. The exhaust air temperature is 51.7 degrees Celsius - nothing supernatural.
The working surface temperature ranges from 25.1 to 32.4 degrees, and the hottest point - 32.4 degrees - is located on the touch panel.
The keyboard temperature is 27.4-30.2 degrees - cooler at the right edge, hotter at the left. The bottom temperature is between 25.3 and 35.8 degrees in the CPU area. The temperature range of the video card is from 40 to 65 degrees.
Summary - we did not notice much difference from laptops on the old platform. All measurements were carried out at an ambient temperature of +21 degrees Celsius.
Now - about the noise emitted by the laptop. During idle time, the noise generated by the cooling system does not exceed 34.1 dB; in case of prolonged high loads on the processor, the fan slightly increases the rotation speed, and the noise is 35.7 dB.
And only at high and long-term loads on the CPU and video subsystem, the fan rarely and briefly (up to 15 seconds) spins up to maximum speed, and the noise level is 40.7 dB.
Such a jump occurs extremely rarely - for example, when running the 3DMark Vantage test suite, there were only two such jumps, and the duration of each did not exceed 8 seconds, after which the noise level returned to the level of 35.0-35.7 dB.
In a word - bravo! It's hard to find such a powerful and quiet laptop. All noise measurements were taken at a distance of 20 cm from the center of the front edge of the notebook.
Due to the small number of models already tested in the PC Mark Vantage package, a notebook of another class - ASUS Lamborghini VX3 - was chosen as an opponent, the results of which are given only for comparison purposes.

Power supply and autonomous operation
Samsung laptops have always delivered excellent results during battery life tests. But the R560 is built on the Centrino 2 platform, the use of which, according to Intel, increases the battery life.
And, apparently, this statement is not so far from the truth. When tested with Battery Eater Pro 2.7 in "classic" mode, the notebook lasted 179 minutes. Three hours of battery life under high load is a very good result.
And if you consider that only a six-cell battery with a capacity of 5200 mAh is used, then in general - excellent! By the way, it takes 138 minutes to fully charge the battery.
The advantages of the Samsung R560 include a good package bundle, including a recovery disc, good build quality, fresh design, HDMI port, high performance, low noise, relatively low heating, long battery life and relatively low cost.
Resigned to the average quality of the built-in sound, you can give a badge of distinction. But there are a few more "buts" that prevent this: insufficiently bright matrix with small viewing angles, the glossy surface of the case is too easily soiled, only three USB ports, the right edge of the keyboard flexes a little when pressed.

The new Samsung R560 - Aura P8400 Madril fits absolutely any application. Whether it's simple office work, resource-intensive multimedia applications, or gaming, this laptop lets you do whatever you want. There are currently two versions of the R560 model on the market: Aura P7350 Maloz and the already mentioned Samsung R560 - Aura P8400 Madril.
These two powerful laptops very similar, the differences between them are not visible at first glance. But those who take a closer look will quickly discover two fundamental differences. The first, obvious difference follows from their names - R560 - Aura P7350 Malozhas a slightly weaker processor. Don't let the word “weak” confuse you, however, as this is still a P7350, dual core processor with 2 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB and 3 MB L2 cache. Newer models have a higher clock frequency and better energy efficiency than their predecessors.
The second difference is the built-in Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate)... The retail prices of these two models differ by 120 Euro. Bluetooth is used to wirelessly connect to a laptop, such as a cell phone, to transfer music, videos or pictures. Of course, a card reader can also perform this function, and laptops of this class always have a built-in reader, so the importance of Bluetooth should not be overestimated.
BODY
Samsung R560 - Aura P8400 Madril got new look - piano black body. It is worth mentioning that the glossy finish of the case is not only eye-catching, but also difficult to maintain. Samsung thought about it and included in the package special cleaning cloth (15.3 x 15.3 cm).
On the closed lid of the laptop, the Samsung logo sparkles with silver inscription. because of easily retained fingerprints the logo, like the rest of the body, requires maintenance.
Famous wide information sticker, with which it was possible to collect an accurate specification, slightly changed. Now only a few hardware components and existing software are mentioned.
The laptop makes a good impression and has usual size for its class 35.8 x 26.4 x 2.86 to 3.65 cm.Its weight 2.7 kgalso characteristic of its class.
The retaining mechanism for the screen lid is somewhat unusual, although not innovative. The lid can be locked in any position - up to the last two centimeters before closing, when the lid is forcibly lowered to the end and snaps into place with a loud click. Latches that would secure the coverclosed, absent... The cover and the hinges have a very high pressure resistance. Opening angle restriction is approximately 130 °.
Samsung always stands firmly on the table. And it doesn't matter if there is a battery inside or not, all six rubber bumpers on the underside of the case hold the laptop in place.
CONNECTORS

Concerning sound capabilities.Samsung only has analog headphone out (green) and microphone (pink). If that's not enough for you, you can connect an external sound card via a PCI-Express connection.
A very useful interface is multi-slot for memory cards... It can read and write memory cards such as SD, XD, MMC (MultiMediaCard), MMC Plus and SDHC. Digital camera memory cards and cell phones fall under these formats. If your card does not fit the slot, there are card adapters.
