Apple held a spring presentation. True, of the expected new products, only one was presented - a budget iPad with a screen diagonal of 9.7 inches. And all other announcements were about software and educational initiatives. Actually, the topic of using Apple technologies in schools became the main topic of the event.

Apple's focus on education was clear even before the event, by the name itself (see illustration above). In addition, the apple image and font clearly hinted that some announcements would be related to the Apple Pencil and therefore the iPad. But otherwise, most analysts were wrong. Some of them were expecting a cheaper MacBook. Others suggested that Apple will finally update the iPhone SE (the last one was released two years later). Finally, there were speculations that not one, but two iPads will be released.

But all these hopes were in vain. Apple really focused on the topic of education, but presented its developments in this area in all areas - from hardware and software to services and integrated solutions.

Let's analyze the main thing in detail, weeding out marketing and what was already known before. Let's start our story, of course, with the new iPad.

iPad

In fact, the cheaper iPad is not a special innovation. Let's remember: exactly one year ago, in the spring of 2017, Apple released the iPad, which sold in Russian retail for about 25 thousand rubles (with a minimum memory capacity of 32 GB). The new iPad will cost exactly the same (for a similar version), and in general its concept is similar: these are the components of the previous generation, the camera is worse, the RAM is less ... But there is one important difference: the new iPad supports work with the Apple Pencil stylus.

Let's take a look at the main features of the new product and compare them with other Apple tablets of similar size.

Of course, before "live" testing something is difficult to say for sure, but we have an assumption that the body and screen remained the same as the iPad 2017. Actually, only the SoC and the battery have been replaced (this can be seen from the slightly changed capacity), and stylus support has been added at the firmware level.

Previously, the lack of a stylus was a fundamental difference between the Pro versions, but when the iPad Pro 10.5 appeared on sale, replacing the iPad Pro 9.7, the gap between the two lines (the inexpensive iPad and the expensive iPad Pro) widened. This allowed Apple to change tactics and still add stylus support to the budget model. All the same, most of the other characteristics of the iPad Pro 10.5 are better - even though it came out last year. In particular, the new iPad does not support the Smart Keyboard - it lacks the required connector, like its predecessor.

One way or another, in terms of the totality of characteristics and at a price of 25 thousand rubles (and for schools and students - 24 thousand), this is a very attractive offer. And by the way, it can significantly expand the audience of Apple Pencil users, which is also a plus for the manufacturer.

In the Russian online store, the new product is not yet available for order (although there is a corresponding page), but it is already on sale in the United States, and given that the previous iPad appeared in Russia without too much delay, we can expect that the new iPad will be available in April.

IWork update

The assumption that Apple has decided to take serious steps towards popularizing its Pencil stylus is confirmed by the changes announced at the presentation in Office applications for iPad - Pages, Numbers and Keynote. Apple has added stylus support to all parts of the iWork suite by updating to version 4.0. It is significant that macOS versions were simultaneously updated to 7.0.

So what can you do now? The main thing is that you can draw directly inside these applications, as well as add handwritten notes, which will then be available in the corresponding application for macOS.

Updates are already available for download. We could not test the innovations in detail, but we made our first acquaintance. Indeed, now if you press with the stylus anywhere in the document and hold it down a little, an empty block will appear inside the text, where you can draw. The block size is variable, all standard tools are available for drawing.

As for commenting, this feature is still in beta, and, by the way, we were not able to launch it with the stylus right away. However, you can use the menu in the upper right corner and turn on smart annotation there (this is the name of this function).

Next, we paint directly over the text. In general, I cannot say that this is something revolutionary, competitors have similar things, but I am glad that they are now available in iWork for iPad. And, what is especially nice, if you open the saved file on a MacBook or iMac, we will see there exactly the same location of all the marks. As you can see, all the marks have been preserved in the smallest detail.

Another new feature, now only Pages, is the creation of interactive EPUB books. Here, however, it is very difficult to say something without deep immersion, but I want to remind you that Apple's previous decision in this area - the free iBooks Author app for macOS - has not been widely spread (at least in our country). received, although the idea was good.

Honestly, it's hard to imagine that someone would seriously use Pages to create interactive books, but as they say, let it be. Moreover, it can be useful just for educational purposes. And here we come to the third group of announcements of the last presentation.

Software for education

So, Apple has introduced a whole set of software solutions aimed at use in schools and designed to facilitate the "digital" interaction between teachers and students, as well as allowing third-party developers to create their own applications for this area.

However, unlike iWork updates, they are not yet available and will appear, apparently, only in the summer (after WWDC). Plus, this is a very specific area, and there is definitely nowhere without immersion in the material, but we will still list the announced novelties and try to briefly comment on them based on the available information.

First of all, this is the “Creativity for Everyone” program. It includes a range of free learning resources as well as tutorials that "can help educators easily integrate drawing, music, photography, and video into any learning topic, lesson or activity." The program contains manuals for teachers and students, lesson plans, ideas and examples, using which teachers "can bring an element of creativity and interaction in disciplines such as mother tongue, mathematics, physics and history."

It sounds tempting, but let's see how it works. While the Apple Teacher resource, through which access to the program is realized, is not available in our country.

Another novelty is the Tasks app (again, for both iOS and macOS). It is designed to help teachers develop and deliver assignments to students, monitor their progress, and apply the capabilities of other applications in the educational process. Apparently, this is something like an electronic journal and a collaborative environment at the same time. Moreover, Apple provides access to the functionality of "Tasks" and third-party developers - through the API ClassKit.

And the third innovation. The Classroom app, previously introduced on iPad, will now be available on Mac. It is needed to remotely control student tablets.

Finally, there will be an administrative Apple School Manager for educational institutions. It can be used to control Apple devices and student Apple ID accounts. But, unfortunately, we will definitely not be able to test this, so we will refrain from commenting.

Apple's spring presentation left a mixed feeling. If we remove the beautiful words and ideas aimed at the future, and highlight only what is potentially interesting here and now, indeed to all Apple users, then the bottom line will be a boring update of the budget iPad and a less boring, but nevertheless not very large-scale update of office applications ...

Of course, we will test the iPad as soon as possible and, perhaps, at the same time we will tell in more detail about the software innovations of iWork. Yet the overall picture is quite predictable. And it is unlikely that such, in general, not the most significant announcements could become a topic for a presentation - remember that a year ago Apple released a budget iPad without presentations at all, although it just became a new word in the Apple tablet line (at least on positioning and idea).

Then what is all this for? Obviously, precisely for the sake of the educational component. And here, on the one hand, the prospects that open up are very intriguing - if Apple takes this area seriously, there may be dramatic shifts towards a more active and productive use of digital technologies. But on the other hand, living in Russia, we understand that the introduction of such innovations here will be very difficult - for a number of reasons, and this is definitely not a matter of the near future. But, nevertheless, I am glad that the largest company in the world has paid close attention to this difficult, but such an important area. Who knows, maybe this step will ultimately turn out to be more important for humanity and the IT industry than the release of another device, even more interesting in its characteristics than the new iPad.

WWDC 2017 - what's up, Apple?

Yesterday in California (USA) another presentation of Apple took place, which was closely followed by our team. Today, we have selected for you the most interesting and important novelties and are happy to tell you about them in this article. Let's start in order:

iOS 11 | iPhone

Perhaps the most anticipated by millions of users and news - an update of the famous operating system iOS, and as expected - it was presented. The operating system is already available for developers (and there are no less than 16 million registered), a public beta version will be available a little later, and only in the fall, after the iPhone presentation, the update will reach all supported devices:

• Now iMessage syncs via iCloud between all Apple devices: iPhone, iPad, MacBook. Another important iMessage update is the ability to make financial transactions between users using Apple Pay;

• Added document scanner and ability to draw on notes using Apple Pen;

At the presentation, the new iMac and MacBook were presented and they really deserve special attention.

In the new monoblocks from Apple, the 7th generation of Intel Kaby Lake processors are installed, all previously available connectors on the case, with the exception of two new ThunderBolt 3 added, are installed on the 21.5 "" version of 32GB of RAM, and on the 27 "" as much as 64GB.

Depending on the modification, the new iMac will be equipped with graphics processors from AMD - Radeon 550, 560, 570, 570, 575 and 580. The iMac Pro is the fastest iMac in the company's history - an 18-core processor, support for up to 4TB SSD, Radeon Vega graphics, 22 TF performance and a redesigned cooling system. Price - from $ 4999 (for the version with an 8-core processor).

MacBook laptops have not undergone significant changes - the Pro version received Intel Kaby Lake processors and 50% faster SSDs, and the Air line received even fewer changes, but remained on sale. The starting price for the MacBook Pro starts at $ 1299.

MacOS High Sierra. Modest and tasteful.

The update received not only the mobile operating system, but also the desktop one. There are also not many changes in it compared to the previous version, but they all deserve attention:

• Thanks to the use of neural networks, the Safari browser now works 80% faster than Google's Chrome, and has learned to block the automatic start of videos on some sites;

The smallest changes have affected tvOS - before the end of this year, the Amazon application will appear on AppleTV, but in Russia, of course, this update has no meaning. For now, anyway.

If we talk about watchOS 4, everything is a little more interesting here:

• Added a screen based on Siri recommendations;

The long-awaited Apple Special Event 2017 took place on September 12th. For the first time, the conference venue was the new Apple Park campus in California, namely a special convention center that can accommodate a thousand people and called the Steve Jobs Theater. A whole array of new products was presented from the stage, including three new iPhones at once.

iPhone X

The highlight of the program, of course, was the iPhone X (X reads "Ten" - "Ten"), timed to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the very first iPhone.

The smartphone received a 5.8-inch OLED display, which takes up almost the entire front panel. It has a resolution of 2436 by 1125 pixels.

The legendary Home button has disappeared. It was replaced by a simple gesture: you have to slide your finger upward. If you hold your finger in place for a split second, you will be taken to the multitasking menu.

To unlock the smartphone, it is now enough to use the face scanner. The technology is called Face ID, and the work is provided by an infrared camera and various sensors that make a 3D model of the face. Face ID builds over 30,000 points by scanning 50 facial muscles to build a 3D model and unlock the smartphone.

Face ID adapts over time, works with third-party apps and Apple Pay. It will be very difficult to deceive face scanning technology: the chance of cheating is 1 person in a million.

Pre-order iPhone X will be available from October 27, the device will go on sale November 3. The price starts at 80 thousand rubles.

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

In fact, these are heavily upgraded iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Three colors are available: gold, silver and space gray. The front and back panels are glass, the frame is aluminum (inside - steel).

4.7- and 5.5-inch screens have got the True Tone function, which adjusts to the ambient light. The speakers are 25% louder.

Both the bezel-less iPhone X and the 8 and 8 Plus have wireless charging support. It works the same as that of competitors: you put your smartphone on the surface and it charges.

Prices start at 57 thousand rubles for the iPhone 8 with 64 GB of memory and 65 thousand for the iPhone 8 Plus with 64 GB of memory.

Apple TV 4K

Externally, the same fourth-generation Apple TV, but twice as fast and four times as productive. Supports Ultra HD resolution (3840 horizontal and 2160 vertical). If you have a TV with a similar resolution, and 13 thousand rubles - this is your choice.

Apple Watch Series 3

The third generation of Apple smartwatches with built-in mobile communication and the same design.

Now with the help of the watch, you can listen to music through special services, and the smart assistant Siri has learned to speak through the speaker.

Apple Watch now understands how high its owner is. Ideal if you are skiing or snowboarding.

A Series 3 model with a communication module costs from 24 thousand rubles, a model without a SIM-card - from 20 thousand rubles. Unfortunately, only the second option will be on sale in Russia.
