Contrary to everyone's expectations, Samsung offers a standard SMS messenger. It was previously thought to be replaced by Google Allo, but this application did not receive proper user support and, despite the large number of downloads, the application is little used.
The interface is simple, all the main functions and settings are hidden in the side menu invoked by swipe. The menu offers fast access to all media files received and transmitted via short messages, blocking incoming / outgoing messages, disabling notifications from specific contacts, marking priority messages (always shown in the TOP, regardless of the date the conversation was received or updated). Messages support emoticons and graphic file transfer.
Text input is performed using a standard Samsung keyboard with many custom settings: you can change the width and height, hide unnecessary lines and symbol buttons. You can change the color scheme and increase the contrast.

Design
The smartphone is available in four colors - gold, pink, blue and black; visited the editorial office latest version... Like the older models, Samsung Galaxy A3 boasts 2.5D glass on the front panel, metal frames and glass back panel... Due to the rounded corners and smooth edges, as well as small size, it fits well in the hand and does not strive to slip out, even despite the smooth surface of the back panel.
The bezels around the screen are relatively small (the display occupies 67.9% of the front panel area), traditionally for Samsung smartphones, it uses a hardware Home button (with a built-in fingerprint scanner) and touch buttons Back and Tasks (highlighted at the moment of touch), which additionally increases the "usable area" of the desktop, removing the standard panel with on-screen system buttons from it.
On the upper edge there is a noise canceling microphone and a slot for a SIM card and microSD memory card, on the left - volume buttons, on the right - a power button and a multimedia speaker, on the bottom - a USB Type-C connector, a microphone and a 3.5 mm jack for connecting a headset ...
In general, the device looks good, but it looks clearly more advantageous from the front than from the back - mainly due to the 2.5D glass. Note also that the black version, in our opinion, is somewhat inferior to the “color” versions of the smartphone. It is also worth noting that, like the rest of the 2017 A-series models, the Samsung Galaxy A3 case is protected from dust and moisture according to the IP68 standard (full protection against dust ingress, it can be immersed in water to a depth of one and a half meters for up to 30 minutes).
Display
The Samsung Galaxy A3 uses a 4.7 ″ Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 720 × 1280 pixels. The pixel density is 312 PPI - you can see some graininess only by staring closely at the screen; at normal use smartphone, the image is perceived dense, fonts - smooth.
Despite AMOLED, the colors of the display are quite calm, close to those of IPS-matrices. However, in the display settings, you can switch from the "Main" video mode (used by default) to more "colorful" - "Adaptive display" (the strongest effect) or more moderate, but still much more saturated compared to the "main" - " Movie AMOLED ”and“ Photo AMOLED ”. Here, by the way, you can activate the blue filter, which makes the image warmer and more pleasing to the eye when reading text on a white background for a long time.
The screen is bright and remains quite readable even in direct sunlight. Thanks to AMOLED, blacks are truly black, without gray highlights when viewed from an angle. True, at a large angle, the image shows a greenish tint, characteristic of this technology.
Measurements taken in Basic mode show almost ideal characteristics - flat color temperature line around the standard 6500K, correct gamma curve and color gamut slightly above standard sRGB.
Calls, multimedia
A single-symbol version of the Samsung Galaxy A3 got to the editorial office for review, a two-symbol version will be on sale in Ukraine (with the ability to install a microSD memory card instead of a second SIM card) The earpiece is loud enough, the interlocutor can be heard well, but the multimedia speaker could have been louder - it is quite possible not to hear the call through the clothes on the street. There were no special complaints about the sound in the headphones, except that high frequencies could sound a little brighter.
Hardware platform, performance
The smartphone is based on its own eight-core samsung processor Exynos 7 Octa 7870, manufactured using 14 nm technology. It includes ARM Cortex-A53 cores with clock frequency up to 1.6 GHz, as well as the Mali-T830 video subsystem. This processor is designed for mid-range models, and at one time was already used in a smartphone. RAM is 2 GB, internal - 16 GB (of which 10 GB is available to the user), with the possibility of expanding it using a microSD memory card.
The chipset belongs to the middle class, and in the benchmarks the smartphone is expected to demonstrate the corresponding performance - relatively speaking, between "average" and "medium-high". It will be enough for any modern task, with the exception of perhaps the most difficult 3D games.
Software
Samsung Galaxy A3 runs Android 6.0.1, supplemented by a new proprietary shell - Grace UX (we first saw it in Galaxy Note7). It features an updated notification panel and a new look for the settings menu; in addition, the new A-line has an additional screen to the left of the home screen - it houses a news aggregator; depending on the firmware, it can be either the Russian-language Briefing (based on the well-known Flipboard service) or the English-language Upday. The shell supports a system of interchangeable skins and icons downloaded from the store, displays clocks, notifications and other information on the screen off in Always On Display mode, can keep the screen on while you look at it, offers its own menu for optimizing power consumption and contains a rather large number of additional features.
The fingerprint scanner works quite confidently, the screen unlocks in less than half a second. The interface works as a whole quickly and smoothly, minor slowdowns are rarely observed and mostly when accessing the built-in news aggregator.
Camera
The smartphone is equipped with a 13-megapixel main camera (f / 1.9) and an 8-megapixel front camera. The camera's own application, in addition to the fully automatic mode, also offers Pro - in this case, the user can manually select the white balance, ISO, enter exposure compensation and select the metering method (spot / center-weighted / matrix).
The camera quickly focuses and takes a frame, the pictures are of good enough quality - with a decent dynamic range, natural colors and fairly accurate automatic white balance. In low light or indoors, the quality deteriorates slightly. The clarity could be higher, small details such as thin branches, grass or needles may suffer noticeably from the noise reduction algorithm.
The camera has an HDR mode, it works very delicately, and if there is not a sufficiently strong difference in brightness between different parts of the image in the frame, the result of its work can be purely cosmetic. However, in a situation where there is a light source in the frame or just a very bright object against a dark background, this shooting mode can significantly improve the image by "stretching" the shadows. Autonomy
The Samsung Galaxy A3 is equipped with a 2350 mAh non-removable lithium-ion battery. Thanks to the Super AMOLED screen, as well as the use of the energy efficient Exynos 7870 Octa processor, the smartphone turns out to be very "tenacious", even despite the not very high battery capacity - for example, in the PCMark test it lasted almost 10 hours, which is very good result... We can say that in an average load mode, it will almost certainly last 2 full days.

Conclusion: For technical samsung specifications Galaxy A3 looks interesting, in terms of design the smartphone (especially in black) cannot boast of anything particularly outstanding. But with ergonomics, everything is in order. But the price (9 thousand UAH at the time of writing the review) looks somewhat overpriced, as for the younger model in the series - so we can say that those who need a compact smartphone with a small screen, and not those who looking for "something budget".

When a well-known manufacturer is busy upgrading an already well-known and long-selling smartphone model, this is a reason to speculate. And if this smartphone is a samsung, then this is even a reason to think about it.

What happened to the A3 this year and is this device worth the $ 260 purchase?

If we imagine that it is imperative to keep the ultimate functionality in a modest budget, and even to please lovers of laconic smartphones, then Samsung has performed its task of combining brilliantly. Galaxy A3 (2017) SM-A320F is equipped with an 8-core processor, so it is in no way inferior in performance to smartphones from the premium segment.
The 1.6 GHz frequency does not affect functionality, since the Mali-T830 chipset is integrated into the device (the same graphics processor as the “older brother”). Immediately after the announcement of the model, the first reviews were wary, but the filling of the SM-A320F pleased:
- rAM - 2 GB;
- built-in memory - 16 GB;
- support for external memory cards up to 256 GB.
From the declared built-in memory background processes the smartphone will be pulled by about 6-7 GB, so the user will have 10. This is enough for simultaneous surfing the Internet and working at 3-4 open applications (including graphics), but may not be enough for the most recent versions of games with powerful graphics. Moreover, if we compare the performance of the Galaxy A3 (2017) SM-A320F with Lenovo or Meizu similar in price and parameters, it turns out that the characteristics of the A3 are much more advantageous. For example, the Sling Shot test (the indicator of the phone's performance in extreme situations: in case of network failures, etc.) gives 314 points - 60 above the average.
Review of A3 design solutions and ergonomics
The most pleasant surprise from the developers of the Galaxy A3 (2017) SM-A320F is its compactness. The market situation among global brands that produce smartphones over the past 3-4 years has presented one trend that is not to everyone's liking. For some reason, manufacturers decided that the way to increase the screen diagonal is the best way. And it turned out that now it only produces compact models, and since not everyone can afford it, many classic lovers were left without alternatives. 
Own new smartphone Samsung tried to do just to please these very lovers of the classics: the screen diagonal of the Galaxy A3 (2017) SM-A320F is 4.7. Due to this, the A3 looks neat and as ergonomic as possible: it fits perfectly in the hand. And it weighs only 138 grams (with parameters 7.9 * 135.4 * 66.2).
The designers of the SM-A320F also tried hard with the appearance itself: the model looks stylish and discreet - just like a smartphone should look like, the price of which at first glance is not guessed. Rounded edges, neat. The body is made of glass, but this "stress resistance" is not a hindrance, but rather the opposite: protective glass, the notorious Corning Gorilla Glass 4.
For additional protection, the IP68 technology is responsible (like the A5 or the more expensive S7), which protects the smartphone from dust and moisture. The owners' reviews do not contain any complaints about the sealant, so the Samsung Galaxy A3 is the only smartphone in the budget price segment that can rightfully be called force majeure protected.

Considering that in terms of design the A3 competes only with the iPhone, and in terms of cost - with not the most productive "Asians", then its modest price for the official version is surprising:

- Technosila: 27,590 rubles;
- Yandex Market: $ 303-336.
In comparison with its previous version, the 2017 model has slightly risen in price, but the price is more than offset by improvements in functionality. In addition, according to experts, as soon as the device becomes available on AliExpress, its price will drop to $ 260 declared by Samsung. At the moment, the "gray" versions of the A3 are not yet available. Model colors: classic black, light gold and soft blue. The case itself is wear-resistant, so you don't even need a cover for the first 2-3 months of operation. 
Galaxy A3 camera and screen
The reduced price of the Galaxy A3 (2017) SM-A320F in comparison with other models of the A line is to some extent explained by the manufacturer's decision to integrate a matrix with a slightly lower screen resolution into the device than Samsung buyers are used to - 720 * 1280. In addition, the display itself of the Samsung Galaxy A3 is different: if its more premium "brothers" Super AMOLED Full HD, then here - just HD. That, however, does not affect the color rendition: all the same 16 million colors, which are enough even for viewing panoramic shooting without losing image quality. 
As for the quality of shooting itself, in the SM-A320F the main camera is 13 megapixels and the front one is 8 megapixels. Video recording limit: 30 frames per second (resolution 1920 * 1080, FHD). Taking into account additional settings and filters - for the amateur level it is more than enough, for the semi-professional one may need additional processing, but this will not affect the image quality.
A separate point is a joyful moment: you can watch videos on Samsung Galaxy A3 in absolutely all known formats: from AVI, MP4 and MKV to M4V and ASF (as well as 3G2, 3GP, flv, webm and wmv). So if you need a functional budget employee, where you can easily watch not only YouTube, but also content from other popular video hosting sites, then A3 is perfect.
If you are looking for a device a little cheaper, then you should just wait for the release in popular online stores: in six months the price for the SM-A320F will drop somewhat, and the model will not lose its relevance for a long time.

On the right is the power / unlock button, while on the left we see the volume keys. Below the screen are the traditional capacitive Application Manager and Back keys with their own backlight, as well as the Home button with a built-in fingerprint sensor ”, which works by the touch method.
Got a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels, and the pixel density reaches 312 dpi. This value is far from the record, but the clarity of the picture will not disappoint you. Even small text remains readable and smooth, and the picture remains visible under the bright rays of the sun.
One of the most interesting features of the updated A3 is the Always On Display. This feature allows you to display important information on the screen such as date and time, notifications, calendar, music player control buttons and more. Everything that is needed will be shown on the screen when the phone is asleep, making AOD an extremely handy feature of this phone.
The extremely thin body of the phone is made in accordance with the requirements of the IP68 standard, which makes the “handset” completely waterproof. The user can dive with a smartphone to a depth of 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes. Naturally, the device is also protected against dust penetration.
Cameras
The new Galaxy A3 (2017) has a pair of lenses, one on the front and one on the back. The front camera boasts an 8-megapixel sensor, which means it is capable of taking pictures at a resolution of 3264x2448 pixels. The video is also good - Full HD-resolution at 30 frames per second. The main camera received a 13-megapixel sensor, which can take pictures noticeably best quality and permissions. Unfortunately, the phone is not capable of recording 4K video, but 1920x1080 will be enough for most people.
Near the main lens, which by the way does not protrude from back cover, there is a single LED flash. She is doing her job well.
Processor and memory
At the heart of the Samsung Galaxy A3 2017 is the Exynos 7870 processor, which has 8 energy-efficient Cortex-A53 cores in its arsenal. They operate at 1.6 GHz, which is sufficient for everyday tasks. There is a graphics accelerator Mali-T830 with two cores on board, ensuring the performance of 3D games at acceptable settings.The hardware platform also includes 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. If the built-in memory is not enough, then the user can expand it using a microSD memory card. This is possible only if the second SIM card slot is not occupied by it. Unfortunately, Samsung decided to save some money and implemented a hybrid tray, so you have to choose.
It is worth emphasizing that out of 16 GB of ROM, only 9.7 GB is available to the user.
Autonomy
A 2350 mAh battery is responsible for the autonomy of the mobile device. This, according to the manufacturer, is enough for 12 hours of surfing the 3G Internet or 16 hours of 4G. If you only use Wi-Fi, the built-in battery will last for 17 hours of browsing.The battery is naturally not removable and it also does not support fast chargingwhich is definitely a disadvantage. Given the relatively small capacity of the autonomous power source, the new Galaxy A3 (2017) will not charge for a long time.
Wireless connection
This phone is equipped with a module that allows it to work in fourth generation (Cat.6) networks.
