Traditionally, one of the main devices of the year is new iPhone... This year is no exception. At the September presentation of Apple, the next version of the most popular smartphone became one of the main characters, and more than two weeks after the announcement - on September 25 - the new product went on sale. As expected, Russia was not among the countries of the first wave. However, this, as before, did not prevent the wealthiest Apple fans from acquiring an iPhone 6s with the help of resellers, but for us - to get a gadget for detailed testing (thanks).

Since we told you all the basic information about the iPhone 6s, voiced at the Apple presentation, in a September report, we will not repeat ourselves and immediately proceed to face-to-face acquaintance with the iPhone 6s.

Compared to the iPhone 6, the characteristics of the new product look really impressive: the amount of RAM has doubled, the CPU frequency has increased, the camera has improved significantly. But, however, the battery capacity has become lower, and the mass and thickness - a little more.

Comparison of performance with Android competitors is not at all good for Apple devices. Here, even the iPhone 6s loses on all fronts (except perhaps for the maximum amount of flash memory). But, as you know, you cannot directly compare iOS and Android devices. So let's move on directly to testing.

Packaging and equipment

IPhone 6s packaging is traditional for Apple smartphones and practically does not differ from smartphone packaging previous generation... Is that what attracts attention bright picture on the screen of the smartphone depicted.

As for the package bundle, there are no surprises here either: EarPods embedded in a beautiful box, leaflets, a charger (5 V 1 A), a Lightning cable, stickers and a key for removing the SIM card cradle.

Design

The appearance of the iPhone 6s has remained practically unchanged: the front surface of the novelty is generally indistinguishable from the iPhone 6, the placement of all controls and connectors is completely identical.

You can distinguish iPhone 6s from 6 by the letter S written on the back.

However, there is one more difference that is easy to notice if you take smartphones one by one in your hand. iPhone 6s is about 15 grams heavier. Not very much, but really felt.

In addition, the iPhone 6s has become a little thicker (by 0.2 mm), but this is already quite insignificant and invisible in real use. Apple claims the iPhone 6s uses a new type of aluminum used in aerospace and even tougher glass. But, of course, neither one nor the other is visible to the eye, and we did not dare to conduct a crash test :)

In general, if you want others to see that you have a new iPhone, you will have to buy the pink version :) As we already told in the report, this new color appeared in addition to the three that existed earlier (dark gray, silver and gold).

We had a silver version for testing, so we couldn't personally assess the new color.

Safety

Like the previous iPhone, the 6s has two levels of security: a Touch ID fingerprint scanner and a pin code. But both of these hardware and software elements have undergone changes. The fingerprint sensor now works faster: it cannot be said that this is some kind of radical change, but since you have to unlock the smartphone many times during the day, even a slight improvement in this parameter will affect the overall comfort of use.

We checked it - indeed, there is a difference. But to understand how often the scanner fails and whether the sensor improvements apply to this parameter, you need to use the iPhone for a while.

The second point is the pin code. It now has six characters instead of four. Such a change is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, Apple is encouraging all users to set up Touch ID as quickly as possible, which, in theory, should improve security. On the other hand, now the temptation to make a pin code like 111111 or 123456 is much higher, because remembering four random numbers - perhaps, and six - is already difficult (it is no coincidence that the standard of pin codes for plastic cards assumes exactly four numbers). But if you wish, you can find in the settings the ability to change the PIN code to the usual four-character one.

Performance

the iPhone 6s is powered by the 14nm Apple A9 SoC. The SoC is produced by Samsung. Apple traditionally does not provide almost any technical details, only claiming that the new CPU is 70% faster, and the GPU is 90% faster.

According to information available from various sources (including Apple's official website), the SoC includes a dual-core 64-bit CPU with an architecture based on ARMv8-A, a 6-cluster PowerVR 7XT series GPU (presumably GT7600) and an Apple M9 motion coprocessor, which is now into the SoC itself.

According to Apple, this allows the coprocessor to be more energy efficient and always available to Siri, making it possible to launch Siri without contact. It is enough to say “Hey Siri!” When the smartphone is just lying on the table and Siri will start. In order for this to work correctly, it is necessary at the initial iPhone setup say “Hey Siri!” several times so that the smartphone learns your voice, and then no problem arises. No matter how many times we tried to activate Siri in this way, it always worked out without problems. True, between the pronunciation of the phrase and turning on the device takes about a second and a half.

Let's compare the performance of the iPhone 6s with the iPhone 6, and in multi-platform benchmarks, let's add one of the most powerful Android smartphones to the comparison - the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge +. If there is a dash in some fields of the tables below, then this smartphone has not been tested in this mode / benchmark.

Let's start with browser benchmarks: SunSpider 1.0.2, Octane Benchmark, and Kraken Benchmark. We will also add to our standard set - a new browser benchmark recommended by the creators of SunSpider as a replacement for it. We used the Safari browser on iOS devices, and Chrome on the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge +.

The results are eloquent: Apple iPhone 6s outperforms its predecessor by one and a half to two times, and the Android competitor simply leaves no chances (let's pay attention to the almost fourfold difference in Kraken Benchmark!).

Now let's see how the iPhone 6s performs in Geekbench 3, a multi-platform benchmark that measures CPU and RAM performance.

And here the results are much more contradictory. In multi-core mode, it was the Samsung smartphone that turned out to be the leader (although its gap from the iPhone 6s is not so great, albeit undoubted), and in single-core mode, both Apple smartphones are ahead, with the iPhone 6s ahead of the iPhone 6 by about one and a half times.

The last group of benchmarks is dedicated to GPU performance testing. We used 3DMark, GFXBench, and the new Basemark Metal benchmark, created specifically for devices with Metal technology. In the case of the iPhone 6 and 6s, GFXBench Metal was used (a version of the benchmark optimized for Metal devices), on the Samsung smartphone, the usual version of GFXBench 3.0.

Recall that Offscreen tests are displaying a 1080p picture regardless of the actual screen resolution. And Onscreen tests are displaying an image in the resolution that matches the device's screen resolution. That is, the Offscreen tests are indicative of the abstract performance of the SoC, and the Onscreen tests are indicative of the comfort of the game on a specific device.

So the leader is obvious. The iPhone 6s in Manhattan's newest and most GPU-challenged scene delivers more than enough performance to play. The absolute advantage of the iPhone 6 is about two times. Less demanding on the GPU, the T-Rex scene demonstrates the superiority of the iPhone 6s over the flagship Samsung, both in Onscreen mode (which is quite logical, given the much more modest screen resolution of the iPhone 6), and in Offscreen mode. There is, however, one oddity: it is not clear why the iPhone 6 showed fewer frames in Onscreen mode than in Offscreen mode, although it should be the other way around. We tested this several times, but the result was the same each time.

Next test: 3DMark. Here we are only interested in the Unlimited mode, because in other modes these devices exceed the maximum.

Here, the superiority of the iPhone 6s over the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge + is minimal, and both flagship smartphones confidently overtake the no longer flagship iPhone 6.

Finally - Basemark Metal. Since this benchmark was made specifically for Apple devices, the Samsung smartphone is not in the table.

And here the results are even more winning for the iPhone 6s. When the test scene was displayed, there was a fps counter in the upper left corner. In the case of the iPhone 6, it showed 11-12 fps, in the case of the iPhone 6s - 30-35 fps. Considering that even the iPad Air 2 - the most powerful Apple tablet at the moment (before the release iPad Pro) - it was 9-10 fps, we can say that the iPhone 6s is the most productive device in Apple's 3D graphics. In general, Apple's promises regarding the performance gain of the iPhone 6s over the iPhone 6 turned out to be true. And often even more modest than the real result. The Apple A9 sets new standards for mobile 3D performance and seems to outperform not only Apple devices, but also Android competitors, despite the fact that their specifications are more attractive.

Work in Wi-Fi and LTE networks

The smartphone will work on almost all LTE networks. In this version, Apple has implemented the widest possible support for LTE bands - 23 bands. That is, you can safely buy it in another country (provided that it is not locked to a specific operator) and at the same time be sure that with us it will be fully functional in terms of communication capabilities. Similarly, with trips to another country. However, already with the iPhone 6, things were doing very well.

More importantly, the iPhone 6s is the first Apple smartphone to support LTE Advanced (Cat.6). This standard allows you to download data at speeds up to 300 Mbit / s, while in conventional LTE (Cat.4) this parameter is limited to 150 Mbit / s. Apple claims that Internet speeds over LTE and Wi-Fi have doubled.

In Russia, LTE Advanced (LTE +) networks appeared relatively recently: first of all, this is Moscow, and then not everywhere, and then only at Beeline and Megafon (MTS is in the process of network deployment).

As for Wi-Fi, Apple is also promising a two-fold increase in speed. The novelty supports all modern Wi-Fi standards, including 802.11ac 5 GHz, but we could not notice and prove the improvement in the quality of the Internet connection compared to the iPhone 6 (which also supports the same standards).

The iPhone 6s implements an interesting technology that allows you to "support" the Internet connection using networks with weak Wi-Fi cellular communication... It is not entirely clear why use weak Wi-Fi at all, if there is faster 3G / LTE, and in addition, this can lead to uncontrolled traffic waste, since the smartphone itself determines whether Wi-Fi is weak, and at any time it can start using LTE. Let's imagine a situation when you are trying to watch a video over Wi-Fi in a cafe, but this Wi-Fi is actually weak and does not play video, so the smartphone starts using an LTE connection, but you don’t know about it - the Wi-Fi icon is on ! As a result, you watch the video, thinking that it is on Wi-Fi, but in fact, you are using cellular traffic. By default, this feature is enabled (see the "Help with Wi-Fi" item in the screenshot below), so we recommend that you disable it to avoid unforeseen expenses.

Note that the iPhone 6s, like its predecessor, supports hot-plugging and SIM-card replacement (without rebooting).

New features and software

Despite the fact that the operating system iOS 9 is available on the previous generation of Apple smartphones, a number of software features are available only on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Chief among them is, of course, 3D Touch, a new way to interact with the touchscreen.

What are we talking about? Think of Force Touch technology in the new MacBook Pro 13 ″ and MacBook 12 ″, as well as the Apple Watch smartwatch. When pressed, the device responds not only to the duration of the touch (as previously on the iPhone and iPad), but also to the pressure. Pressing harder (deeper) produces a different effect than a weaker one. In the case of the iPhone 6s, the manufacturer decided to call it 3D Touch.

If we forcefully click on some application icons, a menu will open right on the main screen next to this icon. The content of the menu is application specific. The screenshots below are a few examples.

3D Touch works not only “outside”, but also “inside” applications. For example, in mail client you can use it to preview the letter (the window with the contents of the letter seems to be on top of the rest), and if at the moment when the preview opens, make a swiping movement up without releasing your finger, then we will see the answer options. The same is true for SMS.

Another curious use of 3D Touch is to transform a keyboard into a trackpad. We open any application where you can call the keyboard, do a deep press anywhere on the keyboard - and the letters / numbers on the buttons disappear, and a cursor appears at the entry point, which can be moved. In theory, this can be quite handy when working with mail.

However, we do not undertake to say unequivocally that 3D Touch greatly facilitates the use of a smartphone. For example, if you want to take a selfie using 3D Touch, then you first need to do this deep press on the camera icon, and then select "Selfie" in the menu that opens and after that press the capture button. There are three actions in total. But the same can be done by simply clicking on the camera icon, click to switch to front camera and then press the shutter release. It turns out also three actions! And almost any scenario for using 3D Touch can be replaced with a similar traditional one, which is no more complicated and no longer. The only place where we found the real benefits of 3D Touch is in Maps. We press deeply on any object on the map - and we see information about this object (without 3D Touch, this information could be seen after two actions: first - clicking on the object, then - on the arrow meaning "More").

Another hardware and software innovation borrowed from the Apple Watch is Taptic Engine feedback. You can feel it precisely when using 3D Touch, that is, it notifies you that the smartphone has recognized a deep press. But while it seems that Apple Watch this function is still much more needed.

The last innovation that we will talk about in this section is "live wallpaper". These are something like gifs that are activated by a long press, that is, a cross between dynamic and static wallpapers. It is useless, but it looks beautiful and at first pleases.

Appearance

View new version The iPhone will be similar to its 2014 version. Smooth lines, shape, maybe even color scheme - everything will remain the same. There are versions about new colors, but they have not yet received confirmation from an official source. We managed to find several iPhone photo 6S, which illustrate how multifaceted changes can be, even though the shape remains the same. All photos are concepts of the iPhone 6S, which, however, may not look like one of them when we see it with our own eyes.

release date

The release date for the Apple iPhone 6S will most likely be announced at the presentation, which will take place on September 9, 2015 at the Apple conference in San Francisco.

Characteristics

We literally collected information about the characteristics of the new flagship from Apple bit by bit. Summing up a common denominator under all the data found, you can only express rumors, but not facts.

The A8 processor will be replaced by the updated A9 chip with a clock speed of 1.4 GHz, which will be the "heart" of the iPhone 6s. The production of these processors is already being carried out by TSMC, which uses a modern 16-nanometer process in their manufacture, which allows them to make chips more efficient, energy efficient and at the same time very compact.

Internal storage will increase from 1 GB to 2 GB. Memory of this size was planned back in the 6th version of the iPhone, but, apparently, it was reserved for the updated device.

The home button will become like a joystick. A photo of the patented button device has been published on the network, which can be very useful during games.

The camera resolution will remain the same - 8 megapixels. However, it will receive improved photo processing technology. The iPhone is designed to be as comfortable as possible for selfies. More details about in our review.

The renewed trinity

As mentioned above, three versions of the iPhone 6S will be released at once. The approach to the 6S and 6S Plus is immediately clear - most likely they will get the same inches as the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. A separate item is the iPhone 6S mini smartphone. It is tipped to replace the fading iPhone 5C, the production of which the Cupertino-based company plans to stop in the next six months. The mini version will replace it with budgetary Qualcomm components. The display will receive a 4-inch format. The rounded shape and streamlined edges make the iPhone 6S mini look like the iPhone 6.


In conclusion of the above, it will not be superfluous to repeat that all this information is currently speculation and rumor. But what characteristics the new gadget will receive, we will be able to find out only when the iPhone 6S smartphone is released. Apple iPhone 6s review

Iphone 6S, even in 2019, remains a relevant smartphone due to its quality, good hardware, fashion and coolness of the brand.
In addition, the price of the iPhone 6S has now reached its historic low in dollar terms due to the release of three new series of Apple models.

Case design and material

Design and appearance the new model has not changed and remains the same as its predecessor - Iphone 6. But, as you can see in the top photo, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are already available in four colors: silver, gold, "space gray" and "rose gold ".

The dimensions of the body have slightly increased - the smartphone has become a little thicker, by only 0.2 mm, the other dimensions remain the same. The increase in thickness is due to the introduction of Force Touch technology into the display. This is confirmed by pictures from the assembly shop.
Significant changes have affected the material from which the body itself is made.

iPhone 6s case - inside view


It is now 60% stronger than its predecessor, and at the same time lighter. The new iPhone 6s case uses an improved 7000 series aluminum alloy from previous series. It is a lightweight, high-strength aluminum, zinc and magnesium alloy used in aircraft, automotive and sports equipment. It is more resistant to deformation due to its strength and helps prevent scratches and dents. For comparison - in previous models used alloy of the 6063 series, and in smartphones Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge and 6013 series. And this is really good news for those who want to buy an Apple iPhone 6s, since the old models of their smartphones were relatively easy to bend and break, despite their high cost!

Display

Probably many have already been able to guess on the basis that the dimensions of the case have remained the same, then the dimensions of the displays have not been changed. The iPhone 6S has a 4.7 "display and the 6S Plus has a 5.5" display.

They are equipped with Retina displays as usual. You have already seen the screen resolution of the iPhone 6S in the table with characteristics. And the 6S Plus model received an even more advanced Full HD screen with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. The picture quality on these displays has improved slightly and has become even sharper, according to the manufacturer.

A revolutionary innovation that the developers have endowed with their brainchild is the 3D Touch pressure recognition technology (for which the so-called “Taptic Engine” is responsible), which allows you to use some applications without opening them completely. It is designed to improve human interaction with the device and enables a device with such a touch screen to recognize the force of pressing on the display. With the help of 3D Touch, it is more convenient to call various context menus in Safari and Mail applications, you can see the application function menu by clicking on its icon, and immediately go to the function you need at the moment, create markers on the map, preview links and quickly view in Finder. 3D Touch also allows you to preview links on an open browser page without clicking on it. Researching content on the Internet and finding the necessary information is simplified and accelerated, which, in our opinion, is good.
In audio and video players you can adjust the rewinding speed depending on how hard you tap the screen.
Also, "Taptic Engine" allows us to understand the device - we perform simple tapes (finger strikes on the display), or micro-tapes, or any other actions.

The iPhone 6S is equipped with an Ion-X screen protector. It is said to be scratch-resistant, shock-resistant and tougher than the Gorilla Glass found on many smartphones. But some people have the opinion that Ion-X is the same Gorilla Glass, just with a different name.

In my opinion, a screen protector and a protective cover are always useful.

IPhone 6S Cameras

Significant changes in the new generation of Apple smartphones have affected the main camera. Its resolution has increased to 12 megapixels, up from 8 megapixels in the previous series. The pixel size in it compared to the previous model has decreased to 1.22 microns, which made it possible to reduce grain and improve image detail. A technology has also been implemented that has improved the quality of images in low light.


The new lenses that this camera is equipped with have a high level of filtration and improved optical properties, which will provide the best image quality close to professional cameras.

The front camera of the iPhone 6S has a 5MP resolution. and the quality of the photos it takes is also improved over the iphone 6.

Design

There have been no significant changes in the appearance of the iPhone 6s compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 6, which did not surprise anyone at all. Apple smartphones with the letter S are traditionally similar to previous models. However, the novelty did not become a complete copy of the iPhone 6.

First of all, the dimensions have changed. The iPhone 6s has become heavier - only 15 grams, but they will really be felt, especially if you have been using the iPhone 6 for a long time. That's how fast the second generation Touch ID works. Therefore, willy-nilly, you have to get used to, accustoming yourself to check notifications by pressing the power button.

The secret behind the amazing speed of the second generation Touch ID is to equip the scanner with two biometric processors instead of the previous one. Each processor performs its own function, due to which their joint work ends much faster.

The process for setting up Touch ID has not changed from previous iPhones with a fingerprint scanner.

Summing up all of the above tests, we can summarize that the iPhone 6s received a significant performance boost over the iPhone 6, as promised by Apple. Separately, it is necessary to note improvements in terms of the PowerVR GT7600 graphics chip, which indeed became twice as fast as its predecessor.

Autonomous work

The iPhone 6s has a 1,715mAh battery, which is 95mAh less than the iPhone 6. This fact surprised us a lot as the iPhone 6s is slightly thicker and heavier than its predecessor. However, despite the decrease in battery capacity, offline iPhone 6s lasts longer than previous Apple smartphones.

Testing with a web script that simulates common use the smartphone showed that the iPhone 6s lasted 8 hours and 15 minutes without recharging. The iPhone 6 only lasted 7 hours 2 minutes on a similar procedure. The increase in battery life occurred by more than an hour, although officially Apple claims the same autonomy of smartphones.

Three retests have confirmed the superiority of the iPhone 6s over previous models in terms of battery life. From this we can conclude that the system based on the Apple A9 processor is more energy efficient, and the integration of the M9 motion coprocessor into it has not been without a trace.

Cameras

All iPhone models since the iPhone 4s have come with an 8-megapixel camera. Apple was not at all interested in the fact that other manufacturers staged a real race of megapixels - the company quietly improved its usual 8 megapixel camera with everyone possible ways... The result was impressive every time - Apple managed to significantly improve the quality of shooting cameras, while maintaining their previous resolution.

But, apparently, the potential of the 8-megapixel has been used up. The iPhone 6s has a 12-megapixel camera with f / 2.2 aperture, Focus Pixels autofocus, 4K video at 30 fps, dual flash, and five-lens optics. Technologically, the camera has also been improved - it has received improved noise reduction technology and an improved tone mapping system.

The main disadvantage of the iPhone 6s camera is the reduced sharpness at the corners of photos and in the background. She frankly walks and in order for the picture to turn out good, most often it is necessary to take several frames. Remarkably, the iPhone 6 camera didn't have this problem. Hopefully, the snag is not in the iPhone 6s camera itself, but in software and with the next iOS updates, the floating sharpening situation will be fixed.

As for the rest, the iPhone 6s camera shoots “no worse” than the iPhone 6 camera. That's right - there were no grandiose improvements, even despite the increased resolution.

I still want to end the conversation about taking photos with the iPhone 6s on a positive note. The camera's shooting speed is impressive - it takes 1.7 seconds to create a picture, 1.9 seconds in HDR mode. In comparison, the iPhone 6 took 1.9 and 2 seconds for these tasks, respectively. The main competitor of the iPhone 6s, the Galaxy S6, has noticeably higher figures - 2.2 and 2.4 seconds, respectively. In other words, Apple has re-created the camera that takes pictures the fastest.

But where there are absolutely no complaints about the iPhone 6s camera, it is in shooting a video. Shooting is performed without defects and artifacts in all major modes. Best of all, there are no problems when recording video with 4K resolution - the mode can be set by default and changed to a worse quality only when there is not enough memory space or you need to shoot video at 60 fps.

As before, users will have to exit the Camera app and head to Settings to switch capture modes. Note that this will need to be done more often, since there are more modes. This is inconvenient, but, probably, in the next versions of iOS, the developers from Apple will still listen to users and put the shooting mode switches directly into the Camera application itself.

The feature of the iPhone 6s camera is the ability to shoot Live Photos. The so-called "live" pictures are three-second video clips recorded in 1080p resolution. Live Photos are recorded in a special mode in the "Camera" application, and are reproduced with increased pressure using 3D Touch. On Mac computers, “live” pictures can be played without problems, but on a PC it is not possible to open them. Likewise, with the old iPhone models - you will not be able to transfer a “live” photo from the iPhone 6s to the same iPhone 6. This, by the way, is the main disadvantage of Live Photos. Due to the existing restrictions, you need to use the new function with an eye to how and where you want to upload your creations afterwards.

And if few people will be completely delighted with the main camera of the iPhone 6s, after all, there have been no fundamental changes, then the updated front camera will definitely please. Instead of the previous 1.2-megapixel front camera, the iPhone 6s received a 5-megapixel one. And in this case, the increase in resolution cannot be overlooked. Photos taken with the front camera of the iPhone 6s are excellent, albeit not without noise.

A notable feature of the front camera on the iPhone 6s is Retina Flash. When taking a selfie, the smartphone screen fills with white, highlighting the user's face. Retina Flash works like everything else Apple does in a smart way. In total darkness, the screen flash will be bright white, which will brighten the face the most. 3D Touch

However, there is a considerable list of commands that are really easier to execute through the 3D Touch menu. For example, if you press hard on the Tweetbot application icon, you can quickly send the last photo. We have counted the number of steps required to perform this task normally and using 3D Touch. Apple technology reduces the number of required actions by exactly half - from six to three. And this is just one example. In fact, developers can provide even more effective options for the 3D Touch menu than improve the user experience for iPhone 6s owners.
