Xiaomi mi3 year of release. Review of the Xiaomi Mi3 smartphone. The new flagship of the Chinese manufacturer. Many people are interested in the question of whether there is NFC on this smartphone.

A few days ago I finally managed to get my hands on a Xiaomi MI3 with a Snapdragon processor! In the store where I purchased it, they told me that they were able to bring only a few copies, because even in China it is difficult to buy MI3. Probably because of this, there is still not a single one in RuNet full review. That is why I decided to make the Mi3 review as detailed as possible. But already in the process of preparing it, I realized that it would be difficult for the reader to master such a large amount of information within one material, and I divided it into two articles. This review is dedicated to the device itself, but here you can get acquainted with the shell in detail.

Packaging and equipment

Xiaomi Mi3 is packaged in a box of impressive dimensions, made from recycled materials without the use of dyes or special coatings. To the touch, the material from which the box is made seems to be something between cardboard and fiberboard.

The smartphone is equipped with: a synchronization cable, a power adapter and a paper clip for opening the SIM card tray. Xiaomi Mi3 supports SIM cards standard format(NOT nano/micro).

Appearance and ergonomics

The appearance can be described in one word – shovel! Seriously, the smartphone is large even for my big hand, Mi3 dimensions are 144 * 73.6 * 8.1 mm, weight is 145 grams. The proportions of the Mi3 evoke associations with the Sony Z1, and everyone who saw the smartphone in my hands noticed this. The exterior of the Mi3, to my taste, is more elaborate and solid than that of Mi2 and, even more so, than that of Mi1. Among the eminent Chinese smartphones The hero of the review, in my opinion, is the cutest.

The body is non-separable - made of a single piece of polycarbonate. He has strict, maybe even too strict, forms. The entire front surface is occupied by Corning Glass, below it: the screen, sensors, front camera and touch buttons; The speaker opening is covered with a black metal mesh. In the upper left corner there is the “Mi” logo. The back surface is flat, the plastic is rough, but not soft touch. There is a metal “Mi” logo soldered into the bottom center, a camera window, a paired LED flash and a microphone hole are located at the top left.

At the top end there are: a 3.5-jack connector, a SIM card tray and another microphone hole, at the bottom end there is a microUSB connector and perforation that covers the hole for the main microphone and the ringing speaker. The left side is clean, the right side has a volume rocker and a phone lock button. Side buttons have ideal movement and rigidity. There are no complaints about the row of touch buttons: menu, home, back (the photos are CLICKABLE!).

The smartphone is well tailored, the parts fit together as precisely as possible. The main problem with my copy is the presence of a small gap between the plastic casing and the supporting frame of the case in the camera area. Every time you press on this place, you hear an unpleasant creak. The body shape is angular, which is probably why the Mi3 doesn't fit very comfortably in the hand. It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to use a smartphone with one hand; it’s almost impossible to reach the “Menu” button with your thumb, not to mention the top of the screen.

Screen

Mi3 has a 5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1920*1080 pixels (441ppi) manufactured by LG/Sharp. The screen has an anti-reflective coating and is made using full lamination technology. The viewing angles are maximum, the contrast is at a good level, the maximum brightness is not very high, hence the main disadvantage of the screen: it almost completely goes blind in the bright sun.

There is automatic backlight adjustment; it works correctly in most situations, although in complete darkness the brightness is excessively reduced. The manufacturer claims that the touch surface responds to touches with gloves. Tests have shown that this is indeed the case, however, the home, back and menu touch buttons do not respond to touches, therefore, you will not be able to fully control the smartphone - only answer/hang up a call. The touch surface does not respond to foreign objects: keys, plastic cards, pencils. Overall, the screen left a pleasant impression, although it could have been better.

Hardware and performance

Xiaomi Mi3 WCDMA version is built on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974AB platform (AnTuTu defines MSM8274AB), which includes a quad-core ARM processor operating at a frequency of up to 2.3 GHz, and an Adreno 330 video chip with support for OpenGL ES 3.0, operating at a frequency of up to 450 MHz.

RAM 2GB (DDR3 800MHz), permanent memory can be 16GB or 64GB. The smartphone has sufficient and even excessive performance; all modern applications, including heavy games, work on it. In AnTuTu, Mi3 scored 35,153 “parrots”, which puts it on par with Samsung Galaxy S5 and flagships of other companies.

Wireless modules include: Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, operating at frequencies of 2.5 and 5 GHz. Naturally, there is support for GPS, and assisted GPS. Information about the sensors is below in the screenshot.

Photography and video shooting

The 13.1MP main camera is a Sony Exmor RS sensor, covered with a wide-angle lens with an F/2.2 aperture, consisting of 5 lenses and an infrared filter. The camera has autofocus and hardware supports HDR. The maximum image resolution is 4208*3120 pixels. The flash consists of two LEDs installed close to each other. The LEDs in Mi3, unlike those in the iPhone 5S, have the same color temperature.

During shooting, you can manually adjust shooting parameters such as shutter speed, ISO, white balance, exposure shift, focus. There is no option to save pictures in RAW, only JPEG. There is a shutter mode using voice.

The camera in Mi3 allows you to take pictures of decent quality, sharp with good color rendition and a moderate amount of digital noise. For comparison, I took several pictures on Xiaomi Mi3 and Apple iPhone 5S under the same conditions. CLICKABLE! On the left is Xiaomi Mi3, on the right is Apple iPhone 5S:

When shooting in HDR mode, the Mi3 camera's exposure correction is quite rough. In contrast to the same iPhone 5s, which produces only a slight “lift” in dark areas. See for yourself. CLICKABLE! On the left is Xiaomi Mi3, on the right is Apple iPhone 5S:

The macro mode worked well. True, when shooting text, the white balance error is noticeable. The minimum distance to the object for macro photography is ~50 mm. CLICKABLE! On the left is Xiaomi Mi3, on the right is Apple iPhone 5S:

I would call the indistinct behavior of the camera in poor lighting conditions a bug (or feature?). After several attempts to photograph a colorful mug in the dark, I realized that Mi3 was not even trying to “pull out” the photo. CLICKABLE!.

But I didn't give up! By manually setting ISO3200 and shutter speed to 1/4 second, I achieved my goal. CLICKABLE! On the left is Xiaomi Mi3, on the right is Apple iPhone 5S car:

The worst situation is with panoramic photography. Firstly, the filming process itself turned out to be painful. After pressing the shutter button, the phone asked to “move it smoothly left or right.” To get a better panorama, I tried to move the smartphone as slowly and smoothly as possible, but despite this, a warning appeared on the screen from time to time: “Too fast.” After the Nth attempt, I still managed to finish the job, and I was ready to evaluate the result of my labors, but that was not the case! A miniature of the panoramic photo and a save indicator appeared on the smartphone screen; the latter took 15-20 seconds (!) to fill. When the picture was finally saved, I was presented with a mess of pixels, distorted proportions of buildings and terrible brownish shades throughout the entire field of the frame, in addition to everything, the final resolution of the picture was only 3.3 MP or 4992 * 664 pixels; for comparison, the iPhone 5S creates a panorama of 25 ,8MP. CLICKABLE!!! Top: Xiaomi Mi3, bottom: Apple iPhone 5S:

2.1MP front camera with wide-angle optics, F/2.2 aperture. There is autofocus, the maximum image resolution is 1920*1080 pixels. The smartphone records video with a maximum resolution of 1920*1080 pixels @30fps and a bitrate of 15.1 Mbit/s. The sound is recorded in stereo with a sampling frequency of 48KHz and a bitrate of 96Kbit/s. Video shooting is weakness Xiaomi Mi3. The example below shows that during recording, for some reason, the exposure constantly jumps, and the sharpness and color rendition leave much to be desired. Unfortunately, the Mi3 is practically unsuitable for shooting video, at least on the current firmware version.

Sound

The sound produced by the external speaker is loud and clear. The sound in the headphones is also not bad, but is inferior to that of the iPhone 5S in terms of detail and maximum volume. The system has a built-in sound enhancer – MiSound, which can be activated after connecting any headphones. In my opinion, MiSound’s work comes down to enhancing the bass, which becomes indecently abundant. There is an equalizer in the settings.

Battery and runtime

The battery capacity of Xiaomi Mi3 is 3050 mAh. This volume does not seem very large, especially compared to the 5-inch IPS screen and the monstrous Snapdragon 800.

Surprisingly, the smartphone lasts a day even under medium-high load and about 6-6.5 hours of display activity at the minimum comfortable backlight brightness. And this is without any optimization of energy consumption: 3G, NFC, Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi are active, applications are not unloaded from random access memory. In terms of autonomy, Xiaomi Mi3 is not a record holder, but it is quite a solid average.

operating system

Before the sale, the store installed Russian MIUI version 4.3.7 (build dated 03/07/2014), based on Android 4.3 (JellyBean), and CWM recovery instead of the native one boot menu. The firmware is initially rooted; application root rights are managed through the built-in security manager. Fresh builds are released every Friday and installing them is easy.

Already back in 2013, Xiaomi was just trying to gain a foothold in the smartphone market, and therefore had no room for error. Therefore, Xiaomi Mi 3 was presented - a phone with an aluminum-magnesium body and a 5-inch Full HD screen covered with glass. Gorilla Glass 3.

Equipment

A few years ago, Xiaomi produced all its products in packaging made from recycled materials. There was even a demonstration of how strong the cardboard box was, supporting the weight of several people. However, everything inside is modest - in addition to the smartphone we get Charger, microUSB cable, as far as paper instructions and a paper clip for removing the SIM card tray.

Design

Before Xiaomi Mi3, all other smartphones can be safely called inconspicuous, since Xiaomi tried to produce the most inexpensive models. The by-product was that few people could notice them on the market. Finally, the situation changed and the Mi-3 showed what a budget car could be.

Now the smartphone has received not only interesting characteristics, but also a fairly recognizable design, as well as higher quality body materials.

Basically here we see polycarbonate, which is still widely used by most manufacturers. The advantage of this material is that the case does not collect fingerprints, and scratches will be almost invisible. The material is durable, but slippery and it is better not to hold the smartphone with wet hands - it may slip out.

Xiaomi designers decided not to reinvent the wheel and Xiaomi Mi 3 received a neat body without unnecessary details. Externally, it is quite reminiscent of Lumia line phones or even Nokia devices.

Although the device turned out to be reliable and simple, its dimensions are far from compact. With a 5-inch screen, the phone is one of the largest. It has almost the same dimensions as the Galaxy S5, but unlike our device, samsung smartphone has smooth lines and curved corners, and the shape of the Mi3 body makes it visually larger.

Above the display there is a front camera, a speaker mesh, proximity and light sensors, as well as a notification LED.

Below the 5-inch screen is a row touch buttons– Back, Home and Menu. Long press on any of them opens the latest manager running applications. In the settings you can slightly change the “long press” options.

The keys have adjustable backlighting.

On the right side there is a power button and a volume rocker. You can easily find them by touch and press easily.

On the top edge there is an unexpected SIM card tray, a 3.5 AUX headset jack and a perforated microphone grille.

At the bottom of the case there is a microUSB connector and the main speaker, which is hidden under perforations.

Display

The Xiaomi Mi3 screen has a 5-inch IPS matrix with Full HD resolution. The pixel density is 441ppi. Depending on the assembly plant, Mi3 may have a display from Sharp or LG. ABOUT protective glass You can still argue - this is either Gorilla Glass 3 or Dragontail. The main thing is that the glass performs its function and reliably protects the display. The sensor is of high quality, responds to touch even with gloves, and recognizes up to 10 touches simultaneously.

The image on the screen is displayed in high quality. Viewing angles are close to ideal for an IPS matrix. The detail is high, the fonts are smooth. In the settings you can set one of several color temperature and saturation options.

In bright sunlight, the picture remains readable and bright. Automatic adjustment Screen brightness does not always work perfectly, so it is better to set a comfortable level manually.

Performance

At the time of release, Xiaomi Mi3 received one of the fastest processors - Snapdragon 800, which has already appeared more than once in other top smartphones. Therefore, even the LG G2 became a competitor to the Xiaomi Mi-3. As for the performance of our smartphone, we are interested in seeing the results of work in different modes. So in the settings of Mi3 you can choose the work - productive, balanced or energy efficient.

In maximum mode, the processor starts operating at a frequency of up to 2.3 GHz; in minimum mode, to save battery, the frequency is reduced to 1 GHz. If the system is in standby mode, the minimum frequency will be about 0.3 GHz.

Xiaomi Mi3 benchmark results:

  • AnTuTu v4.x – 34317;
  • GeekBench v3 – 966/2976;
  • Mobile XPRT 2013 – 238/70.

As a result, we see that according to the test results, Mi3 outperforms its competitors and perfectly reveals its potential in real conditions. The smartphone is also not bad in graphics tests, but it is far from flagships. The main thing is that the platform is powerful enough for most modern tasks.

Note that under heavy load the smartphone will become very hot, and not only back panel. Because of this, you will have to turn on the balanced operating mode as often as possible.

Camera

Xiaomi Mi3 received a main 13-megapixel CMOS camera with f/2.2 aperture and dual LED flash. In the settings you can set the desired brightness level, resolution, ISO values, picture clarity, shutter speed. All this can be configured in a couple of taps. also in manual mode You can choose from three focusing options, white balance and effects.

As for the quality of shooting, during the day the photos are of high quality. Macro photographs are also pleasing. But under poor conditions, the camera produces poor results.

The sharpness of the photos is good, you can also photograph text. Noise reduction works well, shadows have no artifacts or noise. It is only in low light that detail begins to suffer. You can safely use the HDR shooting mode, in which the Xiaomi Mi3 camera reveals its qualities - excellent sharpness, good color rendition and saturation.

The front camera has a resolution of 2 megapixels and is only suitable for simple selfie photos.

Xiaomi Mi3 shoots video with a resolution of up to 1080p, there is software image stabilization. Video is recorded in mp4 format, codec aac, sound – aac lc, 96 Kbps, stereo.

operating system

As usual, MIUI firmware is installed on Xiaomi smartphones. This is one of best alternatives for stock Android. Unfortunately, the standard version of the firmware on Mi3 does not support the Russian language. You will have to manually do Russification or even install a custom assembly. For the lazy, there is the option of installing a third-party keyboard with a Russian layout.

MIUI does not have Google services pre-installed. Everything can be solved using GoogleInstaller.

The MIUI shell is as simple and convenient as possible, we get unlimited interface customization options, a lot useful functions, not available in stock Android.

The Xiaomi Mi3 firmware is based on the MIUI shell, with corrected childhood problems that were on previous models smartphones.

Battery

Despite the plastic body, back cover Xiaomi Mi3 is non-removable, which makes it difficult to access battery. Its capacity is 3050 mAh, from standard charging to 100% charged in 2.5 hours.

Xiaomi Mi3 test results for time battery life in different scenarios:

  • 3G talk mode – 25 hours;
  • mobile Internet 3G – 21 hours;
  • screen off and continuous music playback – 50 hours;
  • standby mode – 500 hours;
  • reading mode, balanced mode – 12 hours;
  • reading mode, battery saving mode – 10 hours 50 minutes;
  • video playback mode, balanced mode – 9 hours;
  • video playback mode, battery saving – 9.5 hours;
  • Epic game mode, balanced mode – 4.5 hours;
  • Epic game mode, battery saving - 5.5 hours.

As you can see, we usually get about an additional hour of work in energy-efficient mode.

This smartphone is ideal for those who are looking for a phone for every day. It holds a charge well and has enough performance for any task. The only serious drawback is that Xiaomi Mi3 initially received not the most stable firmware, on which applications crashed. The only option is to immediately upgrade to final version MIUI or install stable custom firmware.

The smartphone can compete with top-end smartphones in some comparisons. For quite a bit of money, we get a high-quality phone with a 5-inch Full HD screen and one of the fast Snapdragon 800 processors. You can turn a blind eye to the design, since Xiaomi has redesigned it towards originality only in the following models.

What I didn't like

Poor quality USB connector

What I liked

Powerful processor, good software

What I didn't like

1) The camera is of poor quality, focus is lost in video shooting mode.
2) Angular body, sharp corners.
3) The screen sticks out from the body (I think it’s easy to break, although it fell 5 times).

What I liked

1) Excellent system and updates every week (the phone will be up to date). 2) Good battery, enough for a full day (Capacity 3050). 3) Excellent hardware (all applications and games will not slow down). 4)Good build quality. 5) Price (took before the price increase). 6) Pretty good screen. 7)Quickly picks up GPS satellites.

What I didn't like

There is not enough brightness in the sun

What I liked

Hardware for cheap money, screen, camera, battery.

What I didn't like

Communication quality, constantly losing network

What I liked

Display, battery, miui

What I didn't like

What I liked

CPU

What I didn't like

There is no 32gb version. In the sun the screen still lacks brightness. There are a lot of unnecessary Chinese programs installed. Large in size.

What I liked

Large bright screen. Powerful iron. price. Assembly. Battery. Sound. Camera. Branded miui shell. Functional. Many sensors up to the barometer. Gps and Glonass are just a fairy tale.

What I didn't like

What I liked

Design, filling

What I didn't like

The screen on top is brighter than on the bottom, since the LEDs are only on top (but this is not so noticeable, but sometimes it is noticeable on a white background when reading, and for me this is the most significant problem in this model.
I noticed this on the first or second day, but I definitely only realized it yesterday, and all the joy and delight from the phone disappeared somewhere.
And to be honest, this makes me depressed about the purchase.

What I liked

There is no lag, games also run without problems, good connection, good battery - enough charge for 3 days of average use (photos, videos, a little internet, calls), appearance, good viewing angles.

What I didn't like

The main drawback, all the others are not important!!! If the phone falls and the glass breaks, then good luck! The touchscreen immediately stops working, and expensive parts, replace the glass with a 7 thousand screen. You just can't change the glass

What I liked

Light, beautiful, fast, without lags, the new Miui 6

What I didn't like

The camera was very disappointing. It seems that the component responsible for image stabilization is missing. The pictures are not clear. The Samsung camera with an 8 megapixel matrix takes better pictures than the 13 megapixel Xiaomi MI3 camera.
There is also such a lag. You launch the calculator built into the shell, and you are thrown out to the initial screen. The same thing happens with the built-in radio. The calculator was torn down and replaced with another one. But I still don’t know what to do with the radio.

What I liked

Everything flies. Good battery. An excellent solution is the MIUI shell and the service associated with MIUI. The Antutu benchmark gave the most best result at 35344.

What I didn't like

Perhaps this is work time. The case is not collapsible, this is both a plus and a minus of this device, the impossibility of changing the battery as a result. Lack of slot for microSD card. Incomprehensible operation of the tab Power Settings, if you set Energy Saving, the phone does not turn off 3 cores, but simply lowers the frequencies of the first core, and the rest remain at a frequency of 2265 MHz, in normal mode, all 4 cores operate at a peak frequency of 2265 MHz, then everything becomes more interesting, performance (Performance), 4 cores also work at peak frequency, BUT ANTUTU produces, hold on, 25000?! I'm sorry, what?! What it is? But this is of course a trifle. Of course, it is worth noting the rather strong heating of the upper left corner of the phone (near the MI logo), especially in heavy games. The cases are simply disgusting, it’s quite difficult to find a normal case, these plastic “Bathtubs” in which you need to place your smartphone just infuriate me. It is also worth noting that the optimization is not very good GTA San Andreas, which, although it works at max, produces an average of 40 fps which sometimes drops to 25. Probably one of the drawbacks for many will be the location of the speaker, it is located on the bottom edge and is easy to cover with your hand. Sometimes when you turn on Glove Mode (highly sensitive screen), there are phantom touches on the sensor, which can be treated by locking and unlocking the smartphone.

What I liked

Of course, this is the price, only 13,450 rubles, it is worth noting the excellent MIUI 5 firmware, which no Android smartphone can compete with, a beautiful 5.5-inch Full HD display from SHARP (I got one), the power of Snapdragon 800AB, Adreno 330, (Note 3 =D) nervously smokes on the side, I really liked the design, it’s like Nokia Lumia, but Nokia has WP 8, which I don’t like at all, I would like to note GPS operation, with a cold start it searches for satellites for 10-15 seconds. The case is not collapsible, because of this there are no backlashes, although if you lightly tap your fingers in the area of the buttons, you can hear a rattling sound. The working hours are debatable, on the one hand there is enough for a day, but this is frankly not enough. Because I have English as my main language, I don’t like stupid translations through PROMT, all firmware is installed correctly. 13 MP camera with dual flash, 2 GB LPDDR3 RAM.

What I didn't like

Weak maximum display brightness. The camera often takes blurry pictures (although I may have tinkered with the settings badly)

What I liked

Pleasant to the touch plastic, minimalistic design. The firmware is very well thought out and convenient, more convenient than iOS (I didn’t expect it). Powerful hardware, does not slow down anything, despite the fact that the firmware consumes a lot of memory (almost 1 gig). Very light for its size.

What I didn't like

Design..... I want to hide it in a case and quickly, but the covers are normal for it only in China

What I liked

The first phone on Android (out of seven branded ones.. for personal use.. mercilessly sold for endless jambs and glitches) from which I don’t turn back! Of course, the firmware! In general, I won’t even bother - in terms of hardware and performance, everything is OK

What I didn't like

When shooting a video, the sound is quite bad, the automatic update, although good, is fraught with “surprises” when you discover that the phone has rebooted and requires you to enter a PIN code (that is, the phone has been disabled for some time for others) - but this can be treated by disabling the auto update . Sometimes it starts working on its own (the software can be buggy - maybe it’s just me). It can be treated by turning off the screen and turning it back on (or using the home button).

What I liked

The battery life is pretty good, excellent build, GPS is fast, the screen is excellent and clear, good sound in headphones, excellent packaging, constant automatic update, cool camera, fits well in the hand.

What I didn't like

Oddly enough, powerful hardware has a downside: when the snapdragon 800 works at maximum performance, the device gets very hot and the charge melts before our eyes, and the game does not necessarily have to be super demanding on hardware.

What I liked

Stylish case, screen, miui firmware, powerful iron. works quickly satellite navigation, quickly connects to wifi points

With a new product from Xiaomi - the Mi-3 smartphone. Our verdict is that it’s an excellent device with two drawbacks: the lack of support for WCDMA networks and the inexpressive sound of the multimedia speaker. Today we are testing Xiaomi Mi-3 on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 hardware platform, which does not have one of the disadvantages inherent in the model based on Nvidia Tegra 4.

The new product will be available on our market from April. The recommended price of Xiaomi Mi-3 is tied to foreign currency and is $500. Let us remind you that the recommended price for the GSM model was 4,500 UAH, which, in terms of currency at the time of its appearance on the Ukrainian market, was even more than for the WCDMA version.

Since smartphones differ only in hardware platform, we will not describe the configuration, design, ergonomics, software features(over the past few months, Xiaomi has released an update to Android 4.3, so both smartphones now run on this version of the OS), but let’s talk about autonomy, performance and overall impressions of the device.

Together with Xiaomi Mi-3, we had the opportunity to test the bumper and protective case. If there is nothing to say about the bumper, it is very ordinary, then the case deserves special attention.

Just one look at the protective case evokes respect/bewilderment, depending on who you are. An already rather large smartphone becomes like a tablet in size. The manufacturer of this accessory is Love Mei. The special features of this case are its protective properties. It protects not only from water and moisture, but also dust, shock and vibration. Another feature is that the smartphone retains all its functionality: calls, work with the display, camera, and so on. The case consists of a top and bottom aluminum panel and tempered Gorilla Glass. It comes with a strap, two tools for unscrewing screws, three spare screws and a cloth for wiping the glass. The smartphone is protected from vibration by shock-absorbing sides, which will not damage the case even under high loads. The back part consists of a rubber insert in the battery area and a metal frame on the sides and in the camera area. Taking into account the noticeably protruding metal elements on the front side, the smartphone is completely safe from falls; the only situation in which the display can be damaged is if it falls on a sharp object.

To be able to fully use the smartphone in the case, all the necessary technical holes have been made in it. Touch and mechanical keys work correctly. We found only one drawback, although it cannot be called serious - there is not always informative feedback when pressing the “Back” key. There is no such problem when pressing other keys. Perhaps this is due to the peculiarities of a particular sample.

This accessory deserves the highest praise and does its job perfectly. Of course, carrying a smartphone in this case every day is at least impractical, since it barely fits in the inside pocket outerwear, not to mention pockets in jeans or trousers.
