Again, the device is a 7-inch tablet with a capacitive touchscreen. This is multitouch, but as far as I've seen, only two fingers are most likely supported (instead of ten, as on the iPad). It will be the first Kindle with a full color screen and backlight. This device does not use E-Ink technology.

Earlier this week, it was reported that a 7-inch tablet from Amazon could be released in October this year, with a larger 10-inch version next year. At the moment, Amazon's final plan is to release only the 7-inch Kindle, and this event should not be expected until November. The version I saw was a special test instance. The design of the device has already been approved and only the software filling is undergoing revision.

Initially, Amazon planned to release 7-inch and 10-inch tablets at the same time. But that plan changed this summer. Now they are betting on the 7-inch. If the Amazon Kindle tablet is a hit, they will start preparing to release the more expensive 10-inch tablet in Q1 2012.

The top bar shows the name of the owner of the device, followed by a number of notifications in bright orange, which looks pretty cute.

The Amazon tablet doesn't have physical buttons. You can access the navigation menu by tapping the screen once, from where you can go to the home page.

But the key factor for Amazon is the depth of integration of the device with all of its services. The Amazon bookstore is always one click away from the reader. Google's Android Market was nowhere to be found. In fact, there isn't even a Google app. This Android is a completely stand-alone operating system. In other words, you will never see Honeycomb or any other pure version of Android on your device. Even if Amazon updates the core, users will never know about it. Externally, the Kindle Fire is most similar to the BlackBerry PlayBook - it's just as boring, rectangular and black. The bezel around the screen has a glossy surface, but the "back" of the tablet is covered with my favorite Soft Touch plastic, which is embossed with a large Kindle logo. In general, the device fits well in the hand and does not cause discomfort during prolonged reading.

Kindle Fire is equipped with stereo speakers, which are located on the top edge (if you hold the tablet upright). These speakers, by the way, produce a loud and surprisingly bass sound. Below are both connectors (micro-USB and headphone output) and a power / lock button, which also houses a device status indicator.

The screen installed in the Fire is surprisingly good by the standards of the device's price category: it has good color rendering, and the resolution of 1024x600 pixels can be considered optimal for a 7-inch diagonal. The viewing angles, especially horizontally, are rather small, but this did not bother me personally. But the obvious "tightness" of the touchscreen - interfered, and how. Sometimes you have to poke at the screen several times so that it registers the click.

Default interface

Amazon Kindle Fire runs Android 2.3, but the manufacturer mutilated the OS beyond recognition, disabling most of its capabilities. In fact, in this form, the Fire is an e-book with a TFT screen and the ability to watch videos. Installation of applications is provided, but only from the Amazon App Store, which is not available in Ukraine. The built-in video player can display videos from the Amazon online store (which is not available in Ukraine). The user can record his videos (in MP4 format) in the device's memory, but they can only be accessed through the Gallery applications. In general, Amazon has tried to make it more or less comfortable to use the Kindle Fire only for consuming content purchased from them. The built-in Silk browser uses the WebKit "engine" and works on the same principle as Opera Mini (web pages are precompressed on Amazon servers and only then downloaded by the device). The browser has no display problems, but it works slowly. Pages take a long time to load, scrolling jerks, scaling is far from smooth. In general, there is little pleasant. Separately, I would like to note the pre-installed full version of the office suite QuickOffice, which is a nice bonus for tablet buyers.

Root and its consequences

Like almost any Android device, the Kindle Fire can be hacked. This begins with the procedure for obtaining access at the superuser level (the so-called "rutting", from the English root). This procedure takes about 15 minutes and is relatively safe. What do you need to get superuser access on the Kindle Fire?

The first step is to allow the installation of third-party applications on the device itself (Settings -\u003e Device -\u003e Allow installation of applications from unknown sources). Now install the JDK on your computer, then the Android SDK. Launch SDK Manager and in the window that appears, check the boxes android packages SDK Tools, Android SDK Platform Tools and Google USB Driver package. Click the Install packages button. During the installation process, you will be asked several times to restart the ADB server - answer Yes each time.

Now go to the C: \\ Users \\ [your username] \\. Android \\ folder, find the adb_usb.ini file there and add a new line to it with the following content:

If you did everything correctly, then in about 5 minutes you will get root access to the tablet. Remember to disconnect it from your computer and restart. But "rutting" is only the first step. Now you need to install an alternative shell and Android Market on the Kindle Fire. For simplicity, I'll assume the location of the Android SDK adb utility is included in the system PATH. So, we need GO Launcher EX, file manager Total Commander (or similar) and Google app bundle. To be more precise, from the whole package I personally used two files: GoogleServicesFramework.apk and com.amarket.apk. We connect the tablet to the computer and copy the GoogleServicesFramework.apk files into its memory. After that, open the command windows string (cmd.exe) and print the following commands in it:

Adb install tc_rc3.apk adb push com.amarket.apk / data / local / adb shell

The familiar DOS command line will be replaced with a hash (#) command line. If you see a dollar sign ($) instead of a hash, enter the su command. Now we enter the following commands:

Busybox mount -o remount, rw / system cp /data/local/com.amarket.apk / system / app / cd / system / app / chmod 644 com.amarket.apk rm /data/local/com.amarket.apk exit

The command line can now be closed. On the tablet itself, open Total Commander, find the GoogleServicesFramework.apk files and install it. After that, go to the / system / app / folder, find the com.amarket.apk file there and install it too. You now have Android Market on your tablet, but it doesn't appear in the standard Kindle shell, so you'll need to install GO Launcher EX. Just copy its APK file to the tablet memory and run it using Total Commander. Now, when you press the Home button, you will be able to choose GO Launcher EX as your default shell. It is worth noting that the work is not over, because to fully work with the Kindle Fire, you need to install a different keyboard, Gmail and Calendar applications, and so on.

Performance and autonomy

After the tablet was hacked, it became possible to measure its performance using standard benchmarks, in which the Kindle Fire performed well - comparable to the HTC Sensation.

It's worth noting that the subjective performance of the tablet leaves much to be desired. All animations look "chopped", the screen reacts poorly to touches, scrolling slows down noticeably. With time autonomous work Fire is in trouble too. The manufacturer claims 8 hours of reading time and 6.5 hours of watching videos, but in fact I got about 7 hours of reading and 5 hours of watching videos using MoboPlayer. The result, frankly, is not outstanding.

In the dry residue

The bottom line is an extremely interesting tablet, which is practically useless out of the box, but easily hacked, which opens up a lot of new possibilities. Currently, both the default shell and what is obtained as a result of hacking are distinguished by noticeable dampness and brakes, but the situation will certainly be corrected by the release of alternative firmware. Literally today it became known about the porting of the popular CyanogenMod 7 firmware to the Kindle Fire - you can expect that it will become available for download soon. In general, the Kindle Fire is difficult to recommend to those users who are used to using gadgets out of the box. Rather, it is a good piece of iron for those red-eyed people who like to poke around in the guts of devices and squeeze the maximum possible out of them. 1 reason to buy an Amazon Kindle Fire:
