General characteristics

A type

Determining the type of device (phone or smartphone?) Is quite simple. If you need a simple and inexpensive device for calls and SMS, it is recommended to opt for a telephone. A smartphone is more expensive, but it offers a wide variety of options: games, video, Internet, thousands of programs for all occasions. However, its battery life is significantly shorter than that of a simple phone.

Memory and processor

CPU

In modern phones and smartphones, special processors are usually used - SoC (System on Chip, system on a chip), which, in addition to the processor itself, accommodate the graphics core, memory controller, I / O device controller, etc. Therefore, the processor largely determines the set of functions and device performance.

The senior device of the L-series of LG smartphones entered the market as the latest, already almost under the Christmas tree. The smartphone is equipped with a huge, 4.7-inch screen, dual-core processor and a gigabyte of RAM. At the same time, he inherits all the characteristic features of the series: both an angular design and an economical approach to creating models of the L-line. While the price of this model is melting before our eyes, let's see how worthy of attention and wallets.

Specifications

Like other representatives of the L-series, the Optimus L9 smartphone does not carry a technical revolution and is moderately equipped for its category. At the same time, unlike its younger brothers, it is the only one with a sufficiently high performance and a screen with an acceptable pixel density (234 ppi). However, the position of the senior in the lineup obliges. The LG Optimus L9 is powered by a TI OMAP 4430 dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. Let me remind you that we met the same combination, for example, in the Panasonic Eluga DL1. Only the latter worked under android 2.3 and showed poor performance for a smartphone with a dual-core processor. Optimus L9, like the rest of the lineup, came out immediately with Android 4.0 on board. Again, there are no complaints about its performance.

Otherwise, the Optimus L9 is equipped with a typical mid-range smartphone: a five-megapixel camera, a screen with a resolution of 540x960 pixels, 4 GB of internal memory, a moderately capacious battery (2150 mAh).

Appearance

All LG models belonging to the L-series are like two drops of water similar to each other. Optimus L9 is no exception. The body is a strict rectangle with a silver border. The back cover is made of regular textured plastic, like the younger models. The Home key is hardware. True, due to the screen size - 4.7 inches - the smartphone is more associated not with younger models, but with the LG Optimus 4X HD. Intuitively, I found the Optimus L9 more sympathetic than the 4X HD, and I never really got a chance to figure out why. He also seemed more comfortable in work, despite the lower screen resolution. Perhaps the reason for this is the hardware Home key (with the touchscreen on the 4X HD, I constantly had problems due to accidental clicks), and possibly a different location of the screen lock button. Still, in a device with a 4.7-inch diagonal, placing it on the side seems to be more convenient than on the top edge - try to reach and unlock the phone with one hand.

And it is also possible that the novelty is lighter by 8 grams and visually seems thinner (although this is not so). For some reason it just feels better.

While the presence of a hardware Home key makes the Optimus L9 more convenient to use, the smartphone control buttons are not ideal. The Home key is slim and sits almost flush with the body. At first it annoyed me (as in the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini), it was so thin that I had to hit it with a fingertip. But at some point I caught myself that I no longer notice the shortcomings of this form.

The other two control buttons, as usual, are touch-sensitive. With the backlighting of the icons turned off, they are completely invisible on the case, but it is, in principle, impossible to miss them.

By the way, one more difference of this model from the flagship 4X HD is that there are no ribbed plastic inserts on its side edges, they are smooth, with a metal-like coating. In principle, the appearance of the Optimus L9 has not deteriorated from this in any way. The arrangement of the elements on the case can be seen in this photo.

The back cover is removable. You don't have to remove the battery to install the SIM card.

The location of the microSD slot is unusual. It is located directly under the SIM card, and you cannot do without removing the battery.

Textured plastic back cover smartphone looks mediocre, but practical in use. It does not scratch (and if it does, then it certainly is not visible). But all sorts of colored liquids are easily clogged into the recesses of the surface. If you accidentally put your smartphone in a puddle of coffee on the table, for example, you will have to wipe it thoroughly.

The device lies perfectly in the hand. Even in the women's. Even in spite of the 4.7-inch screen diagonal. At this point, everyone who did not hold large smartphones in their hands and consider them a disgusting perversion can pour out bile in a comment. This large shovel is very convenient to use.

Screen

Although the 4.7-inch handsome smartphone screen has a resolution of 540x960 pixels rather low for its size, it still surpasses the younger models in terms of pixel density. The 234 ppi indicator can be called sane for the category to which the model belongs. Of course, the geeks will squeak unhappily, the Galaxy Nexus (gray for the same money) has an HD screen resolution, and those models with 540x960 often have a diagonal of 4.3 inches and, accordingly, a higher pixel density. And if you look closely, the pixels on the L9's screen will still be noticeable. But this is far from such a heartbreaking sight, which are, for example, the screens of the LG Optimus L7 and LG Optimus L5. And if you remember the cost of the device and the length of the diagonal, then the claims to the permission disappear. Moreover, the screen is of high quality, it catches your eye instantly. Saturated and pleasing to the eye colors, high brightness, wide viewing angles - all this gives the screen an IPS-matrix.

In an attempt to test the Optimus L9's screen for damage resistance, we tried to scratch it in the editorial office. It was not possible to do this on purpose. However, later it turned out that there was already a small scratch on the screen, we somehow did not immediately notice it.

Performance, autonomy and interface

This time, I have no complaints about the performance of the L-series smartphone. It corresponds to the category of smartphones to which it belongs this model... The interface literally flies under the fingers, applications of different gluttony open and close quickly, work smoothly.

Performance test results confirm personal operating experience. According to the number of points scored in AnTuTu, Optimus L9 shows one of the better results among the dual-core smartphones that visited the editorial office gg , the same can be said for NenaMark2. The result of the Vellamo browser performance test can also be called good, but it is somewhere on the level of competitors (with the exception, perhaps, of models on Android 4.1, in particular, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which significantly outperforms Anroid 4.0 devices in this test).

The smartphone is equipped with a 2150 mAh battery, despite this, there is no need to talk about amazing autonomy. As a result, the user will receive the same standard day or two of work, depending on the activity of using resources.

On top of Android 4.0.4, the smartphone uses LG's proprietary shell. She is already familiar to readers gg according to previous reviews of devices from this manufacturer. I see no point in describing its capabilities in detail, Technoslav Bergamot dwelled on them in detail in the LG Optimus L7 review, and on any additional chips and tricks - I in the LG Optimus 4X HD review. I like the shell for its simplicity and ease of adding widgets and applications to the desktop. Someone will probably like the variety of options for personalizing the look.

The list of pre-installed smartphone applications takes a couple of pages. Several more have been added to the standard system applications and LG branded applications (LG AppsClub, LG Informer, SmartShare, SmartWorld and QuickMemo).

First, it is a collection of dictionaries of all kinds of languages. As far as I understand, a user can install one of the dictionaries for free, while others, if needed, must be purchased. I accidentally installed English-Chinese, and nothing else could be added to it without a purchase. In addition, the smartphone comes preinstalled with the Yahoo Finance app, an app for reserve copy Backup data, Yandex search, which can now be found in almost any Russified Android smartphone. That's it.

Perhaps the only thing that prevented me from fully enjoying working with the smartphone was the native LG keyboard with the most inconvenient layout that I have ever seen. But the keyboard is not a critical thing, you can install a third-party one from Google Play.

Competitors

The first device that comes to mind is last year's Samsung Galaxy Nexus - they are quite close to the Optimus L9 in terms of characteristics, and the price of the Galaxy has dropped significantly over the year. Although putting them in one is completely wrong. The Galaxy Nexus is a geek's device, you won't find it on the shelves of every counter store, as you will surely be with the Optimus L9. If you choose a competitor among Samsung devices, then this is probably the Galaxy S III Mini. After all, the Optimus L9 from its manufacturer also seems to be the next model after the flagship. But the Galaxy S III Mini, most likely, is the lot of those who are either big or not able to afford the flagship, but they definitely want Samsung and more expensive. Those who are sure to be interested in the hero of this review are those who find Optimus 4X HD too expensive, and Optimus L7 - weak. Optimus L9 will become great alternative the flagship model, quite productive (albeit with two cores), but with an acceptable price and a lower screen and camera resolution.

Camera

The smartphone is equipped with a camera that takes pictures with a resolution of 2592x1944 pixels and shoots videos in a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. The quality of the photos can be called good, both in good and in poor lighting. Although, in truth, you will not find good sunny days now in the afternoon with fire.

An example of shooting on a more or less clear day

An example of shooting on a gloomy day

Example of shooting at night

Indoor example

In addition, the smartphone camera can take panoramas. This happens in the same way as in sony smartphones - that is, painful and inconvenient. The smartphone must be moved along the line on the screen. If you do it a little faster or a little slower, shooting will be interrupted. The result of gluing such panoramas is often hardly satisfactory. After several vain attempts to make at least one worthy of the readers' attention gg panorama, I gave up.

You can see an example of photos taken with the LG Optimus L9 camera in original resolution in the gallery on Torba.

In the dry residue

Despite the fact that the entire L-series of LG smartphones is characterized by savings in almost everything, the flagship of the line turned out to be a very worthy device. Him good performance, an excellent screen, despite its low resolution for its size, a high-quality five-megapixel camera and a comfortable body. If you are looking for a device with the largest possible screen size and at the same time for humane money, then LG Optimus L9 will be an excellent choice, especially since the price for it is becoming more pleasant and interesting every day.

4 reasons to buy LG Optimus L9:

  • large 4.7-inch screen;
  • high performance;
  • hardware key "Home";
  • convenient location of the lock button (for a smartphone with a large screen diagonal);

reasons not to buy LG Optimus L9:

  • no significant contraindications have been identified.

Many people do not like how smartphones automatically adjust the brightness of the screen backlight. However, the fact that there is no such feature in Optimus L9 at all, I would not attribute to the pluses. You have to go into the settings and move the corresponding slider according to the situation. With the minimum brightness it is comfortable to work with the phone in the dark, but in the sun the picture fades, even if the backlight is turned to the maximum.

There is no need to talk about good display protection, nevertheless Gorilla Glass is installed only on flagships. Of course, it also has its own anti-scratch coating, but, unfortunately, it does not always save.

Hardware platform

Optimus L9 is a prime example of excellent optimization in both hardware and software. Despite the fact that the heart of the device is a far from new dual-core TI OMAP 4430 processor with a frequency of 1 GHz, PowerVR SGX540 is responsible for the graphics, and there is 1 GB of RAM, the smartphone does not slow down at all, does not freeze, does not "think". It is clear that even if the L9 can pull heavy toys, it will be difficult, and you should not expect smooth rendering in the latest shooters. But everything that was designed for the flagships of 2011 will work on this device. Video playback 720p and even 1080p (if, of course, the bitrate is not prohibitive) does not cause any difficulties for a smartphone.

Performance test results confirm subjective evaluations from performance. In terms of the number of points scored in them, the Optimus L9 shows one of the best results among dual-core smartphones, even surpassing the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in some ratings.

As part of MWC 2012, LG unveiled three smartphones for its new L-Style line. All three models had a similar appearance, design and shell continuity. A little later, the company decided to add a fourth smartphone to them - L9. Like the previous phones, it is also made in the corporate design, but its characteristics and price are closer to the mid-high segment.

Appearance, controls, materials, assembly

Compared to most faceless Android smartphones, the L9 stands out for its appearance: The ideas in the L-style line are perfectly traced in it: slightly rounded corners, light blue tones in the shell and a narrow button with two touchscreens on the sides. The bezel of the phone is made of three types of plastic: in the middle there is a strip of corrugated plastic, and on either side of it there are two strips of glossy plastic stylized as metal. When looking at the L9, I remember another smartphone from LG - LG Prada.

I had a black version of the smartphone on the test, but a white version is also available for sale.

The front of the smartphone is a 4.7 ”screen, above it there is front-camera, also covered with glass, and under it - three buttons: touch "menu" and "back", as well as the usual button - "Home", in addition, this button can turn on the smartphone screen. To be honest, I cannot understand such an insistent desire to put a regular button under the screen, but some users note the convenience of this solution.

On the left is the volume rocker, it protrudes slightly, making it easy to find it in the dark or in your pocket. The buttons have a short soft stroke and are comfortable to use.

On the right is the power button. With a diagonal of 4.7 ", reaching for the top end to turn on the screen is inconvenient, so I strongly approve of the decision to place this button on the right or left ends.

At the bottom you can see the microUSB connector and microphone hole, and at the top you can see the 3.5mm headphone jack.

The back of the smartphone is made of corrugated plastic, which is pleasant to the touch and resistant to scratches, most of all it reminded me of the cover in the Galaxy SII. There is a speaker on the bottom of it, and on the right upper corner - 8MP camera peephole and flash. Hidden under the cover is a SIM card slot and a microSD memory card slot; cards up to 32GB are supported.

There are no complaints about the assembly - the smartphone is perfectly assembled, nothing creaks, no backlash, no staggering. Separately, I would note the successful design of the back cover with many latches, thanks to which it is firmly held.

Screen

The L9 uses a capacitive 4.7 ”screen with a resolution of 960x540 pixels (qHD), the matrix type is IPS. The display is covered protective glass... Supports multi-touch up to ten simultaneous touches. Automatic adjustment there is no brightness.

The first thing I liked right away was the ease with which a finger slides across the screen, apparently, the point here is precisely in the oleophobic coating, such a trifle, it seems, significantly improves the experience of a smartphone.

The smartphone has a wide range of brightness: the minimum is comfortable for reading in the dark, the maximum is suitable for bright sunny weather. Thanks to the IPS-matrix, all pictures and photos look natural, although not as bright as on SuperAMOLED displays.

I liked the screen in the L9, it has a good margin of brightness and almost maximum viewing angles. However, the resolution let us down a little, at this diagonal it is more comfortable to work with HD resolution, however, even with qHD, most applications look quite clear.

Dimensions

In terms of dimensions, the L9 resembles the Galaxy S3: similar dimensions, screen diagonal and weight. Due to the materials used and the weight, the L9 is comfortable to hold in the hand, however, reaching the top of the screen or the opposite end is problematic, so in some applications it is more comfortable to use the smartphone with two hands.

  • LG Optimus L9 - 131.9x68.2x9.1 mm, weight 125 grams
  • Htc Windows Phone 8X - 132.35x66.2x10.12 mm, weight 130 grams

operating system

The smartphone runs Android 4.0.4, with the proprietary LG Optimus UI on top. C detailed description Android 4.0 can be found below.

I would also like to talk about several interesting applications from Optimus UI.

Firstly, LG added its own synchronization with all popular social networks, while, in addition to Twitter and Facebook, Vkontakte and Odnoklassniki are also present. After synchronization, your data friends appear in your address book social networks... In the settings, you can select the size of the uploaded photos, I note that when uploading large photos, they have a pretty good quality. Considering that the official Vkontakte application synchronizes photos in terrible quality, the presence of such a service is an indisputable plus.

Quick Memo... Interesting note-taking program from LG. To quickly bring up a Quick Memo, just press both volume keys at the same time. The program settings panel will appear at the top, and you can immediately make a note on the current screen. If desired, you can turn on the usual plain background... Roman told about other programs and features of Optimus UI in his review of LG Optimus L7.

In general, I cannot fail to note the thoughtfulness and functionality of this shell - here you have the ability to change the grid in the application menu, and your own lock screen, and synchronize contacts, and the ability to customize the curtain, and percentages in the status bar. Of the shortcomings, I will only note that the lack of a brightness adjustment slider and Russian letters in the dialer.

Autonomous work

The smartphone has a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 2140 mAh. Quite good capacity for such a thin smartphone.

In video mode at maximum brightness - 4 and a half hours.

In everyday use (auto-sync, 30% brightness, an hour of reading, half an hour of twitter, half an hour of surfing the web, two hours of music and half an hour of video), the smartphone runs out of battery during the day. However, in the evening there is still about 10%, so you are not left without communication on the way home.

The L9 also has a power saving mode, it automatically turns off auto-sync, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, limits the brightness and turns off vibration when you touch the screen. Of course, you yourself can choose the time at which this mode and the modules to be disabled will be enabled.

Performance

The smartphone is built on the basis dual core processor Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 s clock frequency 1 GHz, PowerVR SGX 540 is used as a video accelerator. The amount of RAM - 1 GB, capacity internal storage - 4 GB. Supports microSD memory cards up to 32GB.

When you turn it on for the first time, the speed of the smartphone is immediately amazing. Despite the fact that Android 4.0 is used here, and not 4.1, the tables scroll surprisingly smoothly. The same goes for the rest of the actions: navigating the menu, surfing the web, playing games - the L9 does an excellent job with all this. And if the support for games is a merit of the processor, then the built-in launcher is an example of a good optimization from LG.

Video and reading

The smartphone supports video in resolutions up to 1080p, in addition to the usual mp4 container and the H264 codec, the avi and mkv containers, and the divx and xvid codecs are also supported. The standard video player doesn't have a lot of settings, so I recommend using MX Player or its analogues.

Wireless interfaces

Wi-Fi (b / g / n) - there are no complaints about the work of the module. Among other things, it also supports wi-Fi function Direct.

Bluetooth 3.0 - all major functions are supported, including A2DP.

GPS - cold start takes about 17 seconds, Google Navigation is used as navigation.

Camera

The smartphone has two cameras - the main one is 5MP and the front one is 0.3MP. The main camera records video in 1080p resolution.

As for photographs, they are only of good quality in the presence of good daylight or artificial light.

The front camera supports video calls using Skype, the picture quality is below average, the image crumbles into pixels when moving, in addition, Skype switches the interface to horizontal mode, and holding the phone so that you can be seen in an upside down state is problematic.

Conclusion

For a month of using the smartphone, I did not notice any problems with the earpiece, the interlocutor and I could hear each other perfectly.

The retail price for LG Optimus L9 in popular communication shops is 16 thousand rubles. For this money, you get a smartphone with a good design, small thickness, good time autonomous work, comfortable shell and high-quality IPS-matrix.

In my opinion, the L9 has two drawbacks: the lack of Android 4.1 (for high-quality photos of contacts) and a low screen resolution (you still need HD resolution on such a diagonal). But there are a lot of competitors.
