Installing a router on a computer. Connecting APs to each other without wires. IP address of the device on the local network

If you want to configure your Wi-Fi router yourself, change the password, the name of your wireless network, or other settings, then in any case, you will first need to go to the router settings. In the control panel, where you can set the necessary parameters. I want to say right away that this is not at all difficult. It doesn’t matter what model of router you have or what manufacturer it is (Tp-Link, D-Link, Asus, Linksys, Zyxel, etc.), following these instructions you can go to the control panel. The operating principle of all routers is almost the same, which means that we can access the settings using the same instructions. Yes, there are some nuances, we will definitely consider them.

A router is an independent device that runs on its own software. And it can only be accessed via a network cable (in most cases). Many people have a question: what kind of disk and drivers are included with the router? No, there are no drivers there. The router does not require drivers at all. The disk usually contains special utility, with which you can carry out quick setup router. But, I would advise setting up the router through the settings, which can be accessed through a browser. And as I wrote above, this is very easy to do.

We will look at two methods: accessing the control panel via a network cable from a computer or laptop, and accessing settings via Wi-Fi from mobile devices (or also from a computer). I recommend using network cable and a computer. But, if this is not possible, then you can change some settings, or even completely configure the router from your phone, tablet, or laptop via Wi-Fi. If you want to update the firmware, you cannot do this via Wi-Fi.

How to access router settings from a computer

I have seen many articles where they describe some complex actions that need to be performed from the very beginning (checking network settings, obtaining the router’s IP address via command line) . There is no need to do this, at least not yet. First you need to try going into the settings. If it doesn’t work out, then we’ll watch it possible reasons. Why bother yourself with unnecessary nonsense.

Connecting the computer to the router

We take a network cable, which usually comes with the router (you can use your own cable) and connect one end to the network connector of your desktop computer or laptop. Photo for clarity:

We connect the second end of the network cable to the router in one of 4 (usually) LAN connectors. They are yellow. For example:

Typically, settings can be accessed at , or . The address of your specific router and the login and password that you will need later can be found on the router itself. Usually, they are written on the bottom of the sticker. An address like . can also be indicated there. For example:

The router must be turned on. Next, open any browser on your computer. You can even Internet Explorer, I have Opera. To go to settings, we need to address bar browser you need to write the IP address of the router 192.168.1.1 , or 192.168.0.1 , and go through it by pressing the button Enter. A window will appear asking for your username and password. Again, the default is usually used admin And admin. You can also see this information at the bottom of the device.

If you changed your login and password to enter settings (not to be confused with the Wi-Fi network password), then you need to indicate them. And if you forgot them, you will have to do (article using Tp-Link as an example), and configure it again.

If you cannot find the IP address, login and password of your router, then try first going to the address 192.168.1.1, and then to 192.168.0.1. Try admin as your login and password. Also, try leaving the password field blank, or specifying 1234.

Set the required parameters and press the button Login, or just Entrance, doesn't matter. Your window itself may look different, it doesn’t matter.

If everything is fine, then you will see the settings of your router.

If not, then now we’ll try to figure out what the problem might be. Scroll below.

We go to the control panel via Wi-Fi: from a phone, tablet, laptop

If, for example, you don’t have a network cable, or you don’t have a single computer at hand, but you need to go into the router settings, then you can use a Wi-Fi connection for this.

One important point: when connecting via Wi-Fi, and not via a network cable, you can make some settings in exactly the same way, or even set up a new router. But under no circumstances update software your router. With this you can simply break it. Flash only when connected via cable. Instructions for .

In principle, we do everything the same way as I described above, starting from the moment we launch the browser, go to the IP address of the router, etc. The only difference is that we connect to the Wi-Fi network of the router, which we need to configure , not via cable. We take our phone, laptop, or tablet and connect it to Wi-Fi (if it is not connected). If, for example, you want to connect to a new router, it will have a standard name and will be unprotected.

I'll show you the example of logging into the control panel from a tablet. Just like on a computer, open any browser and go to the IP of your router (192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.1). Specify your login information.

Settings should open.

That's all, as you can see, everything is very simple. If something doesn't work out, ask questions in the comments.

Doesn't go into settings: possible reasons and solutions

I wrote in more detail about this problem in the article. But, since the problem when the router settings do not open and you cannot access the address 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1 is very popular, I think that this information will definitely not be superfluous. Let's look at the most popular problems:

When you try to go to the IP address 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.1, the error page not accessible appears, or the page could not be opened.

This means that the computer cannot connect to the router. It doesn't matter via cable or Wi-Fi. First of all, check if there is a connection. Look at the notification bar (bottom right corner), on the connection status. If you are connected via cable, then a computer should be drawn there, it may have a yellow icon, this is normal. If you connect via Wi-Fi, then there should be just a white network (network level). It may also have a yellow exclamation mark.

Solutions:

  • Need to check network settings on the computer. Perhaps it's in your settings local network (when connected via cable), or wireless (Wi-Fi connection), some are given static settings IP, or other parameters. You need to set automatic IP and DNS acquisition. I have already written about this in detail in the article.
  • If the connection is via cable, then you need to try replacing it. I have come across cases more than once when the problem was in the cable. Or connect via Wi-Fi.
  • If you have Wi-Fi on your computer and are connecting via cable, then you need to completely turn off Wi-Fi. And vice versa, when connecting via a wireless network, disconnect the cable.
  • If all else fails, try doing this, perhaps it contains some non-standard connection settings.
  • Also, there is no need to rule out a breakdown of the router itself. This also happens.

Invalid login/password. Or nothing happens after clicking the Login button.

There may be such a problem. We went to the address, a window appeared asking for data, you specified it, but an error appears that the login information was entered incorrectly, or the page simply reloads.

Solutions:

  • Try different versions of the login/password pair. Admin and admin, try leaving both fields blank, or just the password. Will try to specify the password 1234.
  • Try logging in from a different browser.
  • Most likely you will have to reset your router settings (link given above).

Afterword

There are many manufacturers, and even more models of different routers. And almost everyone has their own nuances regarding settings. But the process of logging into the control panel is almost the same for everyone. I hope that this instruction helped you get into the settings of your router. If you have any problems, write in the comments, we will figure it out together.

"Settings WiFi router? Nothing could be simpler, Watson!
Even if you are a very far person from the depths of knowledge of all the secrets of the computer world, most likely you have still heard of such a thing as Wi-Fi! Let's immediately decide what this word means. WiFi is a technology wireless transmission information via radio signal. Now it has become widespread, so in order to keep up with the homosapiens of the 21st century, I strongly recommend getting involved in the topic and actively mastering and using it. The advantage of setting up wifi at home over cable connection so huge that there is no point in even explaining it - the Internet and data exchange without wires! No sockets, cords or other millennia-old nonsense - I took out a laptop or smartphone (or whatever else is weighing on your pocket?) - turned it on and away I go...

If you are reading this article, then the question of setting up a WiFi router has arisen for you. Well, let's figure out how to set up WiFi on a laptop and computer with Windows 7 or XP.

I’ll immediately make a reservation that the menu sections in the router admin panel that I will talk about can different models have different names and are located in different parts of the menu - the main thing is to understand the essence in which section what needs to be written.

  1. So, first of all, you need to purchase a router with wifi support. To set up a router to distribute a high-speed signal, it is advisable to purchase equipment with maximum throughput(now there are already up to 450 MB/s), which is called reserve. All the features of the choice are described in detail in this blog.
  2. Turn on the WiFi router and connect two cables to it - one, Internet from the provider, to the connector called “WAN”, the other, free on both sides, which came with the kit, to the “LAN” connector.

  3. Connect the free end of the cable to the computer or laptop from which we will configure the equipment.

  4. Go to the browser address http://192.168.1.1 or another address indicated on the bottom of the device. Depending on the manufacturer and model, the address may look like 192.168.10.1, 192.168.0.1 or 10.10.0.1 - from those that I personally came across.

  5. Enter your login and password - usually admin/admin, but may differ. They are indicated there, on the back of the router, next to the address for logging into the admin area.

  6. In the router settings, in the WAN or Internet section, select the type of connection that is either specified in the provider’s contract or found out by calling technical support, and enter all the access data depending on this type. Again, they are all indicated in the contract or accompanying explanatory materials and instructions from the provider.

  7. In the “Wireless Network” or “WiFi” section, set the name of our Wi-Fi (SSID)

  8. In the security section, set the encryption type to WPA2/PSK and set a password for connecting to WiFi.

  9. Activate the mode virtual server— DCHP, which allows you to dynamically distribute IP addresses from a given range.

  10. Save all changes

Setting up a WiFi router - connecting a laptop

Let's move on to WiFi setup on a laptop. Let's look at Windows 7 as an example, although on XP everything will be the same - the only difference is in the names of the menu items in the system itself. But first of all, keep in mind that the laptop must have a WiFi module - either built-in, which you will be notified by a sticker on the case informing you of its presence, or some kind of button to activate it.

If it is not there, then you need to purchase and install it. WiFi adapter— details about choosing this device.

Possible errors when setting up a router

At self-configuration router for distribution wifi signal Beginners often make fairly simple mistakes. I will now give the solution to the most common ones.

If all the router settings have been made correctly, then the Internet should start working wirelessly. Follow the blog updates to learn how to increase Wi-Fi range and many other useful things.

Hello! I'll probably start with the fact that I've already written a lot of articles on Wi-Fi settings routers, and about problems that may arise during the setup and operation of wireless access points. All articles are on this site, mainly in the “Internet” section. In this article I will provide links to the most necessary materials that may be useful to you when setting up a Wi-Fi router.

What is this article about? I want to talk in general terms about installing and configuring a Wi-Fi router yourself. Perhaps you want to buy a router and make it at home wireless network. Now is the time that we can’t live without it. One computer connected to the Internet via cable is a thing of the past. These are constant fights in the family for the opportunity to surf the Internet and a long line in the back :).

Moreover, now almost all devices have the ability to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi. Phones, smartphones, tablets, laptops, netbooks, etc. And if there is no Wi-Fi at home, then you are simply limiting their capabilities.

Before I forget, I would like to write a few words separately about the harmfulness of Wi-Fi, or rather the waves that a Wi-Fi router emits. I wrote about this in a separate article. If you are interested in this question, then read the article. I will only say that there is no point in hiding from these “harmful waves”.

Start searching for networks in your home. And you will see how many routers your neighbors have already installed (provided that you do not live in a village, there most likely will not be Wi-Fi networks). Moreover, radiation from Wi-Fi is several times less than from regular mobile phone, which we also hold near our heads. So they are afraid of a Wi-Fi router, this is not entirely normal and stupid.

Another plus of a wireless access point (aka Wi-Fi router) the fact that you can completely get rid of wires in your home. For some reason I am sure that your computer is not installed near the front door :). This means that the network cable needs to be pulled through the entire house. And if you just did good repair? A Wi-Fi router solves all problems. You can put it or hang it near the entrance doors, and some manage to place it in the common corridor (well, when there is a corridor for two apartments).

You probably ask: “But what about an ordinary desktop computer that does not have the ability to connect via Wi-Fi and needs to connect via a network cable?” everything is very simple, there are Wi-Fi receivers for such cases. About how to connect desktop computer I wrote about Wi-Fi in the article.

Is it possible to connect and configure a Wi-Fi router yourself?

Maybe! And put aside any doubts and excuses, like I don’t know how, it’s difficult, etc. Well, for example, I set everything up myself, and I also wrote instructions for the site. If you are planning to call a specialist who will install and configure Wi-Fi, then my advice to you is to try it yourself first. It won't work out- Call the master. It will work out- Great! Will you be able to, for example, change the provider and what, call the technician again? And then you can set everything up yourself. Moreover, everything is relatively simple. You just need to want it!

Here is my detailed information to help you. Everything is there in detail and point by point, there shouldn’t be any problems. Using these instructions, you can configure other routers, because the process is practically no different. So many useful information It’s also in the comments, you can read them too.

Now I just remembered that I didn’t write about choosing a Wi-Fi router, because you are probably very interested in this question. I won’t recommend anything specific. Choose a router based on the amount of money you are willing to spend on it and the advice of the store salesperson (well, if the sales consultant is smart). All routers are good in their own way and all have their drawbacks. A year ago I bought a cheap one for my home (250 UAH/1000 rubles) router TP-Link TL-WR841N, the store recommended it to me. Excellent device, after a year of operation, no problems at all.

Possible problems when setting up a Wi-Fi router yourself

Judging by the comments to the articles on this site, there are problems. But this shouldn't scare you. Someone got a defective router, someone simply didn’t want to understand the nuances of the setup and immediately wrote: “Serega help, for some reason it’s not working!” :).

Setting up a router - main points:

  1. Connect the router to the computer via a network cable
  2. Connecting the Internet to the router
  3. Go to the router settings
  4. Setting up a tab WAN. Settings from the provider, if you don’t know what settings to specify, then you can safely call and ask the provider.
  5. Settings wireless wifi networks. Set password, encryption type, security type, etc.

These are the main points; read the article for more details on setting up. As for various kinds of problems and errors, they most often arise when specifying settings from the provider and when setting up a wireless network.

But if there is a problem, then there is a solution. I tried to collect all the main problems when setting up a router and connecting to Wi-Fi. Of course, not just problems, but their solutions.

For convenience, I'll probably make a list of links to pages where I wrote about solving certain errors:

  • Well, the most common problem when setting up a router is probably... Not only is this article most popular on this site, also on at the moment(04/09/2013) left to her 739 comments.
  • And others... :)

I tried to collect all the articles with the main errors. If you don’t find something, use the site search, maybe I missed something. Well, or ask in the comments, we’ll try to figure it out.

Setting up Wi-Fi at home is often a big problem. If you don’t want to cut off your phone number to your provider, follow simple instructions and everything should work out. At best, setting up a router out of the box will take about 15 minutes. Shall we time it?

Important! For example, we took a router TP-LINK TL-WR840N . Program interfaces for setting up different models TP-LINK routers may vary slightly (not to mention routers from other manufacturers). Look for the menu items you need, and don’t be alarmed if yours is different from the photo instructions.

Most quick way to configure Wi-Fi router - not the one with the disk. Although installation disk and is included with each router; this installation is not available for everyone. We'll go the other way - let's see how to configure the router manually.

In order to successfully connect the router, you need to know the type and parameters of your Internet connection:

  • IP address;
  • subnet mask;
  • login;
  • password.

This information must be contained in the agreement for the provision of Internet services. There is no contract or the contract strangely does not contain any of the above points? We call technical support and find out.

Connecting a router

  1. We connect the router to the network (the power cord is included - is there one?).
  2. Press the ON button. on the router (many routers are also turned on directly from the outlet, but in vain). In our case, both the power adapter and the button are in place.
  3. In the box we find a network cable. At one end we connect it to the router (there are many ports on the router, you need the one labeled “LAN”,necessarythe port is also usually highlighted in a different color from the others). Others - to the PC network card.
  4. You need to enable automatic acquisition of an IP address. You can do it like this:

Router administration

  1. On a PC, open any browser (we used Google Chrome).
  2. We write the router address in the address bar (for Wi-Fi TP-LINK routers this is 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1).
  3. In the window that appears, enter your username and password. Unless otherwise stated in the technical documentation or on the bottom of your router, routers typically use:
  • login: admin
  • password: admin

If you did everything correctly, this page is in front of you. The menu is always in English. On the left is the menu, in the center is the content of the selected item on the left, and on the right is an explanation and the most important settings items.

How to set up a Wi-Fi router at home

Don’t be afraid: you don’t need to fumble around in every section with an English-Russian dictionary at hand. All you have to do is tick 3 boxes.

Chapter Network, paragraph WAN. From the list, select your connection type - Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE or PPTP (see contract). In our case it is PPPoE. Each type of connection requires tuning. Using the prompts below, complete the settings on your router and clickSave(bottom of page).

PPPoE

Dynamic IP

Static IP

PPTP

Important! The provider is sometimes bound to the MAC address network card(a typical phenomenon for Dynamic and Static IP), so we additionally go to MAC Clone and press Clone MAC Address. This is in case you did everything as stated above, but for some reason nothing worked.

Setting up a Wi-Fi network

We have almost figured out how to connect Wi-Fi - all that remains is to configure the Wi-Fi network. So let's go toWireless- Settings.

We find our location in the list, come up with a name for this network (it’s better not to be clever with the name, but you can’t leave it “as is” - if it matches the name of a neighbor’s Wi-Fi, problems may arise).

Among other things on this page, the following menu items may be useful:

  • Enable Wireless Router Radio - enables/disables Wi-Fi;
  • Enable SSID Broadcast - enable/disable the visibility of the Wi-Fi network, if you disable this item, this network will not be displayed when searching for general Wi-Fi networks (only via SSID).

The latter is not a way to hide from your neighbors, so don’t rush to be clever with secrecy.

Setting up Wi-Fi network security

We remain in the sectionWireless, go to the submenuSecurity. Optimal choice parameters from the list - in the photo below. All you have to do is the Wi-Fi password. We recommend that you write it down in the contract for the provision of Internet services (so that it certainly doesn’t get lost).

Connection and operation

You can, of course, also set up a local network and change administrator passwords (the ones that are admin/admin by default on all routers). But these are already bonus points. The majority of users can start working after rebooting the router. You can do this by clickingREBOOTin the message that pops up at the bottom of the settings page.

Now we connect the cable from the provider (through which the Internet comes to your apartment) to the INTERNET port, highlighted in color and labeled. Other ports are designed for wired connection of PCs and laptops that have problems with wireless.

Now you know how to connect a router in 15 minutes. By the way, how long did you have on your timer?

P.S. Indicators

Not all routers are built the same, but keep in mind:

  • indicator Systemshould flash, not light up;
  • Power- just burn;
  • middle indicators blinking - data is being exchanged, indicators are on - no network activity, do not light - there is no connection;
  • Internet- lights up when there is a connection, flashes - data is being exchanged, doesn't light up - check the cable connection.

If you need a signal booster or say Wi-Fi adapter, using the link below you can select wireless data transmission equipment for any occasion:http://price.ua/catalog454.html.

Plug the internet cable into WAN port(or Internet) of your router (aka router).

Connect the router to the computer: insert one end of the network cable into any of the LAN ports of the router, and the other into the connector of the PC’s network card. Instead of a cable you can use wireless connection, but at the setup stage it is better not to do this.

Connect the router to a power outlet. If your device has a power button, press it. Then wait a minute or two to allow the router to boot.

2. Check the Internet

If your router was pre-configured by your provider or received settings in automatic mode, then the Internet can start working within a few seconds after connecting the router to the PC.

To check, launch your browser and try opening several sites. If there are no problems with accessing web resources, you can skip the fourth paragraph of the article.

In your browser's address bar, enter 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 and press Enter. One of these IP addresses should lead to the router's settings menu. If both options do not work, find the required IP address in the documentation for your router model and try entering it.

When the settings login page appears in the browser window, the system may request a login and password. Most often, when connecting for the first time, one word is suitable for both fields - admin. Less often, router manufacturers use the combination as a standard password 1234 .

If necessary, you can find the login information in the instructions for the router or on the provider's website. Well, or try an alternative.

4. Set up an Internet connection

If the Internet still does not work, the router needs special settings. Exactly what parameters you need depends on specific model device and internet service provider. There is no universal configuration. To get the necessary instructions, check the provider's website or request it from support.

Once you have obtained the manual for setting up your model, follow its prompts. If in the process you set up both an Internet connection and a home Wi-Fi network, you can skip the fifth paragraph of the article.

For Wi-Fi, it is important to select correct parameters security.

In the settings menu, find the section responsible for the wireless network (see the documentation for your router model). Be sure to ask here strong password(you will need it to connect your devices to the router via Wi-Fi) and select WPA2-PSK as a means of protection.

6. Change the password to enter the router settings

Just in case, it is better to limit the access of strangers to the router settings menu. If the router is still protected by the default password, replace it with your own.

Find the settings section that is responsible for the security (see the documentation for your router model) of the device, and enter a new strong password here. Save your changes.

If your computer has Wi-Fi module, after completing the setup, you can remove the network cable from the PC and connect to the router via a wireless connection.

7. Install the router in the optimal location

Ideally, the router is in the center of the area in which you use Wi-Fi. This way the signal will be equally available to all connected devices.

The fewer walls, furniture, and other obstacles between the receiving device and the router, the better the wireless network works.
