By the summer of 2011, the company's product range included seven versions of phones on this platform, which were sold around the world with a total circulation of about 6 million units.

Cheap models sold well, and many did not buy them out of love for the new operating system. No, they were in demand solely because of the fashion for inexpensive touch devices. There are still problems with the software; despite all the company’s efforts, not many programs are appearing. And bada in this case looks like an outsider compared to Android.

However, let's put skepticism aside and look at the new bada flagship. Samsung model The S8600 Wave 3 will be the most functional device in this line. The device is distinguished by high-quality materials, a pleasant design, and a rich list of options. For example, it offers Wi-Fi Direct, an NFC chip, and support for video codecs for viewing unconverted video. The display diagonal has grown to 4 inches, and the dimensions of the model themselves have become larger.

Appearance

Player

The interface is well thought out and convenient. Initially, several tabs are displayed: all songs, playlists, albums. In the player settings, you can add or remove categories, among them, in addition to those listed, there are such as performers, genres, composers, year, most popular, recently played, recently added. If the cover is specified in the track tags, then it will also be displayed in the list of files.

Tracks are shown both as a single list and as a preview with covers, without any file signatures: this is beautiful, but requires a well-organized media library. The player is displayed differently in vertical and horizontal positions. In the first case, there will be the usual album cover and information on the song. In the second, it is a string of files formatted as a CD. Switching tracks is carried out in both positions, only the interface differs. If you wish, you can click not on the virtual key to switch between tracks, but drag the album cover left or right with your finger, and a new song will play.

The player can be controlled with the keyboard locked. You just need to activate the phone display (pressing the screen lock button or another - depends on the settings), then you need to press the desired key. There is a search function among songs.

In the player settings, you can choose between displaying the cover or two types of equalizer. The built-in equalizer works well, its effect is felt immediately, and a variety of sound settings are available. There are also a number of effects that seriously change the sound picture.

The phone plays files different formats: MP3, AAC, AAC+, EAAC+, 3GA, M4A, WMA, FLAC, OGG. There is an option 5.1 Surround – emulation surround sound into headphones (doesn’t work without a headset), an option for the amateur, in my opinion, the sound is pretty distorted. In general, the sound of the device in headphones is very good. The phone plays music noticeably better than gadgets Galaxy lines, preventing them from competing on equal terms.

Radio

The convenient and attractive interface of the receiver allows for both manual and automatic search stations, store up to 100 stations in the phone's memory. There is RDS support, as well as a radio recording function. There is a timer for automatic shutdown receiver after a specified time period. The main screen provides space for eight favorite stations, which you can quickly switch between.

Gallery

The section contains previews of folders with pictures, where nine thumbnails are presented. They look like stacked pieces of paper. Inside each folder there are thumbnails of pictures. Sorting by date and type is available. Any image opens full screen and is multi-touch scaled.

Any file can be sent via MMS, e-mail, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or posted on social networks. The phone can also work as a photo frame, showing a slide show.

Video

The manufacturer's website indicates that the video player supports 3GPP, H.263, H.264, MPEG4, and WMV formats. Nothing is said about DivX and XviD, but videos played fine. Even MKV plays, so the phone can be used as a convenient movie player. If the film comes with stripes, you can enlarge the image by removing the black stripes. Subtitles are supported, just place the file in the folder with the video. Switch between soundtracks not supported.

Settings

In this menu you can configure the device according to your personal preferences. The sound profiles (ring type, vibration strength, alert mode), and the display image (brightness, backlight decay time) change. The vibration feedback that accompanies pressing the screen is set. It also turns off. The System Manager application shows information about the battery and processor load. Using voice control, you can dial telephone number or call a subscriber from the phone book or start the voice recorder.

General characteristics

Type

Deciding on the type of device (phone or smartphone?) is quite simple. If you need a simple and inexpensive device for calls and SMS, it is recommended to choose a telephone. A smartphone is more expensive, but it offers a wide variety of options: games, videos, the Internet, thousands of programs for all occasions. However, its battery life is significantly less than that of a regular phone.

Samsung released a device on the Bada platform in 2011. This is the third smartphone from a proven series. How much is the new Wave 3 superior to its predecessors and in what ways is it inferior to Android devices?

Design

How does the new product differ from previous models? First of all, Samsung Wave 3 has become a little larger. The increase in size is striking. Although the dimensions have increased, the thickness of the device has become significantly smaller, only 9.9 millimeters. The device weighs a little, only 122 grams. You can comfortably use the device with one hand.

The Samsung S8600 Wave 3 and its protected case are attractive. Users prefer devices running on Bada precisely because of this factor. The body of the device is made of wood. We also didn’t forget about protecting the display. The front of the device is covered with glass. The manufacturer protected its brainchild from dirt and fingerprints. The smartphone received good results

The device is collapsible, which means the battery and slots for SIM cards and flash drives are hidden behind the lid, on back side. The panel can be removed quite easily, and there is no need to worry about damaging it. The assembly of the phone, as always, is excellent. Actually, nothing less was expected from a device from a famous Korean company.

On the front of the device there was a speaker, display, camera, Home button and sensors. The bottom end is reserved for a connector and a headset jack. At the back of the device there is the main camera, speaker, flash and the company logo. The volume control is located on the left side, and the power button is on the right.

The smartphone looks pretty solid. The manufacturer did a good job on the appearance of the device. Compared to Android devices, Wave 3 definitely wins. Interesting design and metal case attract attention.

Autonomy

Considering that Samsung Wave 3's characteristics are not the most advanced, a 1500 mAH battery looks good. The device can work for two days without additional charging. Of course, with active use the battery drains faster.

The battery installed in the Samsung S8600 Wave 3 will last 8-9 hours of talk time. The device's battery drains a little faster when watching videos and surfing the Internet.

Camera

From Wave 3 I received a five-megapixel matrix. Wait excellent quality not worth it. The camera is no different from many budget cameras. The quality is enough for everyday needs. In addition, the lack of a camera launch button is disappointing. The manufacturer abandoned the additional mechanical element on the case.

Although samsung camera Wave 3 GT-S8600 is modest, but has a minimal set of functions. The user will be pleased with the presence of flash and autofocus in the device. The most necessary settings are also present. The owner will be able to change the white balance, image resolution, ISO and, of course, contrast.

Maximum resolution available to the camera smartphone - 2560 by 1920 pixels. The video recording will be more interesting for the user. The device shoots videos in HD quality (1280 by 720). Naturally, the video turns out a little grainy and lacks proper sharpness, but overall everything is decent.

The “Korean” also has a front-facing camera. The facial eye matrix has only 0.3 megapixels. This front-facing camera can only cope with video calls. The front camera is not capable of more. Fans of self-portraits will be forced to completely forget about its presence. The image comes out with low detail, graininess and color rendering problems.

Display

The Samsung Wave 3 screen is quite advanced. The manufacturer did not skimp and equipped the phone with a flagship display. The device has a diagonal of four inches. Of course, a resolution of 800 by 480 pixels is not particularly impressive. The cubes immediately catch the user's eyes. Although for a 2011 device the quality is excellent.

The display uses a Super Amoled matrix. This made it possible to improve the brightness, clarity and contrast of the picture. The screen performs well in the sun. The brightness reserve and excellent matrix allow you to avoid image fade. Separately, it is worth noting the good viewing angles.

There will be no complaints about the device’s sensor either. The display responds to every touch, despite the Samsung Wave 3 screen being on par with Android devices and even superior to them. Few devices released in 2011 can boast such a set of characteristics.

Hardware

For the role Samsung processor Wave 3 was selected by Qualcomm MSM8225. The chip is single-core and its performance is only 1.4 GHz. The processor is not the latest, but it is quite suitable for a mid-class device. The smartphone received an Adreno video accelerator, model 205.

The device has only 3 gigabytes of internal memory. Of course, part is reserved for the platform, and a little more than 2 GB is available to the user. Fortunately, you can solve the problem of lack of memory using a flash drive up to 32 GB.

Like almost all phones released in 2011, Samsung Wave 3 received 512 MB of RAM. There is enough memory to ensure normal data processing speed.

System

The Wave 3 firmware is definitely better designed than its predecessor. The smartphone runs on Bada 2.0. The manufacturer has added its own brand to the platform TouchWiz shell.

There is an ambiguous impression of Samsung firmware Wave 3. The platform has many settings and looks more interesting than Android, but there are also disadvantages. Application management is not developed in the best possible way. In some programs, touch elements refuse to work.

The absence of many is also saddening useful applications. The system is not adapted for Skype and other programs. The Bada Axis is not capable of meeting all the needs of an advanced user. Most likely, even a radical change in the OS will not make it able to compete with Android.

Equipment

Along with Wave 3, the user will get: USB cable, headset, documentation, network adapter. The set is standard and definitely needs addition. The user will need a flash drive to expand the memory; a case for Samsung would also be useful. Of course, the metal body and safety glass protect the device from damage. However, a Samsung case will prevent minor scratches or damage from falling.

Connection

Wave 3 works in 2G and 3G networks. In addition to GPRS and EDGE, the device also received Wi-Fi function. The user can use USB and Bluetooth to transfer information.

Price

The low cost also attracts attention to this “stylish guy”. You can purchase the device for 3-4 thousand rubles. The price for a reliable device is very affordable. Low cost bribed most of the Wave 3 owners.

Advantages

Like all phones on the Bada platform, Samsung Wave 3 turned out to be very stylish. The appearance of the device is much more attractive and interesting than that of its Android counterparts. The tempered glass and metal body of the device attracts users.

The display of the gadget should also be given its due. The smartphone has a flagship screen with excellent brightness and viewing angles. Of course, in the background modern devices The 800 by 480 resolution looks mediocre, but for the 2011 model the performance is more than impressive.

The battery also showed good results. A battery of only 1500 maH provides long work device The “filling” is not particularly “gluttonous”, and most of the charge is spent on communication and the screen. The system also made its contribution. Compared to Android, Wave 3 OS consumes less energy. The smartphone can “live” for two days. If you replace the battery with an analogue one with a larger capacity, you can completely forget about recharging.

Despite the terrible quality of the pictures, the video from the device turns out quite good. The smartphone is capable of recording videos in HD quality, which is definitely pleasing.

The price for this miracle plays a key role for buyers. The low cost prompted almost all of its owners to purchase Wave 3.

Flaws

The main problem of the device lies precisely in its unusualness. According to reviews, the Bada 2.0 system was not only interesting solution, but also problematic. Many applications are not adapted for the OS, and the user is deprived useful resources. The system itself also seems underdeveloped. One gets the feeling that the platform lacks integrity.

The hardware will also be a problem for the owner. If you can still put up with 512 MB of RAM, then native memory is depressing. A little more than 2 GB of memory is available to the user. It is impossible to do without a flash drive, which means that the buyer should include the cost of the card in the price of the device in advance.

The owners are not impressed with the device's camera either. A 5 megapixel matrix is not capable of providing acceptable quality. Low detail and poor color reproduction - this is what the user will encounter. The front camera doesn't make me happy either. A regular 0.3 MP peephole is of little use. The ability to record HD videos slightly improves the impression of the camera.

The buyer should be prepared in advance that the device is intended mainly for making calls and surfing the Internet. Low functionality and inability to install useful programs make the device unsuitable for advanced users.

Many buyers are faced with the problem of packaging. In some stores, dialing to the phone was incomplete. Most often, the device's headset was missing. Most likely the problem lies with the place of purchase.

Bottom line

The phone is stylish in appearance, but with a rather simple “filling”. The situation also worsens the OS. Although Wave 3 is considered a smartphone, in fact it is a regular cell phone with Internet access. The phone is suitable for SMS, calls and small tasks. The owner should not count on more.

Design

Smartphones powered by bada have at least one, in my opinion, very nice feature - a metal case. Unfortunately, Korean manufacturers in most cases prefer plastic, which, in my opinion, impoverishes and depersonalizes the devices. But in the case of the Wave line, everything is just fine: an all-metal seamless glass is always good and reliable. The appearance of the device immediately attracts you to the gadget and makes you expect more.

On the front side there is only one hardware button - “Menu” and two touch keys. Surprisingly, these are the “Call” and “End” buttons, and not the “Back” and “Search” buttons that are traditional for many devices.

The touch buttons are not marked in any way and are only visible when the backlight is activated. IN previous models the buttons were hardware and this was a better solution, but, alas.

On the right side is the unlock key, on the left is the volume rocker. The buttons are oblong and very comfortable.

On the bottom edge there is a microphone, a USB connector and a 3.5 mm headset jack.

On the back side is the main camera, it is equipped with autofocus and flash, and there is also a speaker for hands-free calling.

The overall impression of the case was positive. The device looks expensive and thoroughbred. Compared to Wave and Wave 2, the design has become simpler, there are fewer embellishments and flourishes, but this is only beneficial.

When you take the device in your hands, it seems very weighty - this is due to the metal in the body. Despite this, its weight is only 122 grams. Dimensions Wave 3- 125.9x64.2x9.9 mm. The device is larger than its predecessors, now it is closer to Android devices.

The build quality is impeccable. There is simply nothing to hang around here. Very interestingly organized back cover, it is not completely removable, but slides along the rails. The battery is hidden under it, and by pulling it out, you can take out the memory card and SIM card.

This is where I have some small complaints about the developers: the SIM card slot is organized extremely poorly: you have to literally scratch out the card, and this is not always possible the first time. Moreover, I do not recommend using cheap adapters for microSIM cards. The device came to me just after someone tried to use a similar device. They managed to get the SIM card itself, but the adapter remained in the slot, caught on the contacts, and I spent half a day trying to remove it, maintaining the functionality of the device as a whole. But this is a lyrical digression.

Display

The smartphone is equipped with a very decent screen - this is a typical “flagship” screen of the first half of 2011, in particular, this was used in Samsung smartphone Galalxy S. 4 inches, Super AMOLED, with a resolution of 800x480 pixels and a capacitive sensor. Even though the screen is over a year old, it still looks great: brightness, clarity, image contrast, everything is at a very good level. There are no complaints about viewing angles either.

Wave 3 vs Prada 3.0:

The sensor is very sensitive and accurately responds to all touches, despite the fact that the screen is covered with protective plastic. This is not Gorilla Glass, but protects as expected. The settings are standard, there is a light sensor.

Battery

The lithium-ion removable battery with a capacity of 1500 mAh does not look like something outrageous, but it copes with its task with a rating of at least “good”.

No, seriously, almost two full days of work is, by today's standards, an almost outstanding result for a smartphone. Still, the overall balance of the device is extremely important, I never tire of repeating it.

Hardware platform

It’s all the more surprising that if you evaluate only the hardware component - Samsung Wave 3 This is an average device. But I have already said more than once, and they will insist on their own: the closer the manufacturers are to each other operating system and hardware, the less important the tabular performance characteristics are. The only thing that matters is how it fits together.

IN Samsung Wave 3 a single-core Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 processor operating at 1.4 GHz was used. This is not the latest innovation; the platform was created in the second quarter of 2010 using the 45 nanometer process technology and belongs to the second generation. Among its features, we can highlight support for GLONASS in addition to GPS, but in my memory, at the very least, this support was implemented only in the Samsung Omnia W, where GLONASS satellites were used in high-precision mode. In addition to the already mentioned Omnia W, Nokia devices - Lumia 710 and Lumia 800 - are made on the same platform.

As for memory, we used 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of memory for data storage, of which approximately 1 GB is available to the user, and a little more than 2 GB is used by the system for its needs.

Unfortunately, client synthetic tests are practically unavailable on bada, so we had to be content with browser ones: SunSpider showed a score of 10,607 m/s, BrowserMark scored 23,365 points, for comparison - Samsung Galaxy Nexus scored 90433 points. Formally, this doesn’t mean anything; after all, synthetic tests are a special genre, but let’s remember.

To summarize, we can say that the overall impression of the device is positive. Applications open quickly, the same can be said about the desktop, call logs and menus. During testing, the device did not freeze, slow down or irritate.

Camera

As for the camera, the first big disappointment is the lack of a hardware button on the body to launch it. The previous Wave had it, and rightly so. The camera itself is quite modest - only 5 megapixels, has autofocus (as well as touch focus) and a flash. The maximum resolution for photography is 2560x1920 pixels, video can be shot in HD quality 720p - 1280x720 at 30 frames per second. Video is recorded as mp4 files. There is a front camera - 0.3 megapixels.

Software platform

The smartphone runs the latest version of the bada operating system - bada 2.0. Purely externally, the OS interface is very similar to the proprietary TouchWiz shell. If we talk about the sensations from using it, they are ambiguous. On the one hand, bada 2.0 has a lot of different settings, it supports the latest technologies such as Wi-Fi Direct and NFC, and in general it has become obviously better when compared with the previous release. On the other hand, there is no feeling of integrity and thoughtfulness of the interface. In particular, the very visually attractive touch buttons turn out to be virtually useless when working with applications, and the frequently used “Back” key is integrated into the applications themselves, but not everywhere and not always. Due to this, not every application can return to the previous window; it is often easier to press “Home” and start from the desktop.

Challenges

The dial pad is very convenient, the buttons are large. From the same window you can make a video call, send an SMS to the entered number, view the phone book and the event log, which contains information about voice calls and messages.

Messages

We find two tabs: “Conversation” and “Advanced”. In the “Conversation” tab, everything is familiar - messages from subscribers, collected in groups. The “Advanced” tab contains the ability to create a deferred message and set the date it was sent, create additional folders, send messages to the “Spam” folder and to the “black” list.

A few words about the branded keyboard

I found it convenient, especially with a horizontal screen orientation. What’s gratifying is that there are no double letters in the Russian layout; each has its own place. What I didn’t like was the lack of a comma, it went to the digital layout, this is a minus. It’s clear that something has to be sacrificed, but damn, how often do you need a comma when typing!

Multimedia

Video player

The smartphone is equipped with a good video player that supports the most common video formats and containers: DivX, Xvid, WMV, 3GP, MPEG4, H.263 and H.264. We managed to launch MKV too. Videos are played in quality up to 720p. There is also support for subtitles.

Audio

Everything is traditional here, it is possible to sort content by artists, albums, songs, playlists, etc. Files in MP3, AAC, WAV, FLAC and WMA formats are supported. There is a built-in equalizer with a set of presets and additional effects.

Equalizer: auto, normal, pop, rock, jazz, dance, classical, live sound

Effects: Normal, Wide Range, Concert Hall, Music Clarity, Bass Boost, Externalize

FM radio

I really like the design of the application for the FM module that Samsung has been using lately in its devices - very stylish, bright and functional. There is support for RDS, it is possible to record sound from the air.

The quality of signal reception is at a very good level, perhaps the best I have seen recently.

Dictaphone

The quality of the recorded sound is average; the recorded sound is saved as MP3 files. The file size is limited only by the amount of available space. The resulting file can be trimmed if necessary using the built-in editor and sent via email, Bluetooth, or using Wi-Fi Direct to a compatible device.

Data transfer

The device operates in HSDPA 14.4/HSUPA 5.76 900/2100, EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900 networks. In addition, there is Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0 + HS, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n. The already mentioned Wi-Fi Direct technology is also supported, allowing you to transfer multimedia content to external devices. To operate this service there is a proprietary AllShare application.

Browser

As a standard browser in Samsung Wave 3 Dolphin browser is used. In principle, a worthy product that allows you to comfortably navigate the Internet. Pages load quickly and Flash 10.x playback is supported. It is possible to send the necessary links to the Caster service. You can place shortcuts with links to the websites you want directly on your desktop.

What else can be said, the smartphone exists on Russian market in the “MTS and Yandex inside” format, that is, these companies participated in its localization. Due to this, the user has access to a wide package of applications and services: Yandex. Maps", "Yandex. Metro", "Yandex. Market”, branded mail has not gone away either.

The efforts of MTS led to the appearance of a bright red design of the system interface, and all the most popular services of the cellular operator were added to the browser and phone book: GOOD"OK, Weather Forecast, Exchange Rates, Games, Video, Music, MTS Dating, Library, Online games, TV jokes and MTS Search.

Competitors and results

But as for competitors, everything is not very simple. For a whole range technical parameters Wave 3 is on par with devices such as the Galaxy S Plus, for example.

Samsung Galaxy S Plus

It has an excellent seamless metal body, which is noticeably better than the mass of plastic and rather faceless competing devices. This also includes a high-quality flagship screen. On the other hand, it is not very correct to compare smartphones on different OS, since today one of the key roles in evaluating the operating system is given to the ecosystem, and here it is not at all possible to compare bada 2.0 and Android. In the store Samsung Apps there are few applications, we can say that there are only a few of them, while in Google Play there are hundreds of thousands of them and an entire industry is working to make various services increasingly accessible to owners of Google phones. So, if any new global services for “badafones” are released, it will be in the very last place, and here we can only count on the support of Yandex. Actually the same can be said if we compare “badafons” and devices, say, based on OS Windows Phone 7.
