Traditionally, the printer was connected to one of the computers in the LAN, and then you had to either run with disks and flash drives to this computer, or, more intelligently, open shared access to printing devices on it.

However, any of these methods runs into a serious obstacle: to print documents remotely on a network printer, the computer to which this printer is connected must be turned on. Until the system starts up on it - no printing.

This often creates a lot of inconvenience, therefore it becomes necessary to consider alternative ways connections, one of which is the use of a router as an intermediary. After all, unlike a computer, it can work constantly, starts up faster, requires less electricity and is absolutely silent.

What is needed to set up

So, to connect a network printer using a router, we need the following devices:

Select the port type and enter the ip address.

• router with built-in uSB port and Print Server support - network printing functions;
• printer with a USB cable;
• several computers (stationary PCs, laptops) connected to a network through a router.

Although almost any relatively high-quality (respectively, not the cheapest) router model now has support for network printing, it is still recommended to check if the available router and printer are compatible. As a rule, it depends on both the model and its firmware version. The list of printer models supported by this router can be found on the website of the device manufacturer or the developer of its basic software (firmware).

Connect the printer via a router with the power off of both devices. The printer cable must be connected to the correct port on the router. If necessary, you can use a USB hub. After that, the power is turned on, all network devices are started, starting with the router and ending with computers.

Getting started setting up

The printer and router are configured directly from each computer connected to this router. First, through the Start menu, go to the Control Panel, there we run system application "Devices and Printers". At the top we find the button "Add printer" and click on it. A dialog box should open with two choices, you need to click on the first - "Add a local printer".

The next step is to fill in several fields correctly. In the field called "Name or IP-address" you enter the network address of the router or its network name. It is safest to use the IP address that is indicated on the router itself or in the instructions for it. According to the standard, the router address is set in the range 192.168.X.X, one of the most common options is 192.168.1.1. Enter any suitable word in the Port Name field, for example Router.

It is not recommended to uncheck the box “Poll the printer and select the driver automatically”, this will not increase the speed of the procedure. After clicking the Next button, we wait for a while (usually a couple of minutes) while the system searches for the TCP / IP port entered in the previous step. Sometimes the search fails, then a notification appears in the window that the printer was not found. Do not worry too much about this, the process of connecting the printer is not threatened. To continue the configuration process in the "Device Type" subsection, click on the "Special" item, then click the Options button.

Fixing driver problems

Not all computers or network settings are compatible with HP Auto Wireless Connect technology. In this case, an alternative method of configuring the wireless connection will be offered. Compatibility with HP Auto Wireless Connect technology is provided under the following conditions:

If you were prompted to use HP Auto Wireless Connect during the installation process, then this is the recommended setup method. At some point in the setup, you need to temporarily disconnect your computer from the wireless network. At this stage, Internet access will not be available. Therefore, before proceeding with the configuration using this method, save the results of your work on the Internet and / or the downloaded data.

If during the installation process you were not prompted to use the HP Auto Wireless Connect feature, or if the feature does not work correctly, you will be offered a different method for setting up your wireless connection.

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) - WPS has two models for connecting devices over a wireless network. One is called "button press" and the other is called "PIN". HP Wireless Setup Wizard (for touchscreen printers)

1. Make sure you know the network name and security password (WEP, WPA, or WPA2).

• But if you have already installed your device before, then in the installation window of the printing device you will be prompted to select the driver version. If you have more up-to-date software, then click on "Replace current driver", otherwise check the box that allows you to use the one already installed on the PC software application device.
• After completing the installation and choosing a driver, the installation wizard will prompt you to give you a name for the printer. Having solved this problem, click on "Next".
• In the next step, remove the sharing of the printer by checking the appropriate box.
  After completing the procedure, be sure to print a test page to make sure that the task related to how to connect the printer to the router was really solved.

Please note, however, that some printer models may not respond correctly to a setting such as Bidirectional Exchange Mode. When performing test printing, the device does not stop on one sheet - it will work until you stop it manually.
