A settings window will open where you need to specify the Bridge value in the “Connection type” parameter, “VPI” - 0, “VCI” - 35.

Confirm the settings by clicking the “Save” button. In the list that appears, you will see the connection you created.

Router mode

As we discussed earlier, in the Network menu you need to open Connections and click “Add”. In the window that opens, in the catalogs Physical layer and Main settings, set the parameters “Connection type” - PPPoE, “VCI” - 35, “VPI” - 0.

In the PPP Settings section, set:
PPP Username – Password and Login specified by Rostelecom in the Internet service agreement. To constantly maintain the connection, be sure to check the Keep Alive checkbox.

Finally, in the Miscellaneous settings menu, for trouble-free broadcasting of IP-TV data, you need to activate “Enable IGMP”.
Click the “Save” button leaving all other settings unchanged.

Setting up Wi-Fi wireless access:

The router is configured by default WiFi hotspot access with the SSID name DSL-2640U, without using encryption methods.
To change the local configuration wireless network, you need to move to the Wi-Fi menu, after which a screen will open with “ General settings" Here is the only parameter we are interested in, which allows you to turn the wireless network on or off. To activate radio broadcasting, check the box and click the “Change” button.

In the Basic settings tab:
It is advisable to change it to the network name you came up with (SSID name), for example to wi_fi_my_self. In the future, you will see this name in the list of wireless networks of your neighbors. Channel – you should specify auto, the modem will automatically select a channel less noisy with interference.

For the proper level of security, we recommend using encryption during operation of the access point. To activate the settings, you need to go to the “Security Settings” tab and set the following parameters:
Network authentication - WPA2-PSK, PSK encryption key - A password you create for the network (minimum eight characters), WPA encryption– TKIP+AES. Confirm your entry by clicking the “Change” button.

At this point we can assume that the setup of the dsl 2600u for Rostelecom is complete and Wi-Fi is being distributed. After rebooting the modem, you will see your network indicated by the SSID you selected in the list of available networks. Enter the key and enjoy using it!

In a large city, a consumer may get confused in choosing a provider: here you can connect via fiber optic, twisted pair, and even coaxial cable. Tariffs, packages, gigabytes - my head is spinning. In a small town everything is simpler: there is only one provider and it provides broadband Internet access via telephone line using ADSL technology. With its help, you can get a connection with speeds from 512 Kbps to 12 Mbps, and you can use the phone independently. To organize such a connection, you need an ADSL modem, for example, D-LINK 2640U, which will be discussed in our article.

Packaging and accessories of the router

The router was produced in several versions (revisions), but its configuration and packaging always remained the same.

The strict and laconic design of the packaging indicates that there is a high-quality professional product inside.

The box with colorful printing in D-LINK brand colors contains a pressed cardboard tray. Its recesses contain:

Appearance and description of indicators

Thanks to the LED elements located on the front panel, you can find out about the modem’s status even without a computer. Nine indicators show network activity, ADSL line status, and wireless connection status. Let's look at them in order of location on the modem from left to right.

There are LED indicators on the front panel of the modem, which can be used to determine the current operating mode of the device

Modem connection and basic setup

Unlike cable providers that provide Internet access over twisted pair or fiber optics, xDSL technology minimizes the preparation work on your premises. Ideally, your telephone line will simply be set up remotely and you won’t even see a live installer. All you need to do is connect the modem-router correctly, taking into account some nuances.

The equipment at the other end of your line looks much more impressive than a simple modem router

Connecting a modem to a telephone line

To ensure the simultaneous operation of an Internet channel and a wired telephone, both of these devices are connected to the line through a special frequency filter-splitter - splitter. One connector connects the splitter to the telephone line, and the other two are used to connect a modem and a telephone. Don't make mistakes when connecting devices. If you mix up the connectors, neither the modem nor the phone will work.

Frequency filter - splitter - used to simultaneously connect a modem and a telephone

Several years ago, I helped set up and connect aDSL modem to a family of my friends. It would seem, what pitfalls could there be? But the modem stubbornly refused to connect, no matter what settings I set. The problem lurked where no one expected it: the telephone line was on a blocker - an old device that allows you to connect two telephone numbers for one pair of wires. If you also have a phone with a blocker, order a special version of the splitter from your Internet provider, which will allow you to connect your modem. The standard splitter included in the kit will not work on such a line.

Connecting a modem to a computer

The computer can connect to the modem using a cable with RJ-45 connectors (patch cord) or via a WI-FI network. For a stationary PC that stands in one place, a cable connection is preferable. In this case, the connection speed will be higher, and interference from neighbors’ routers will not affect the connection. Any of the four LAN ports of the modem connects to a computer port.

If the length of the patch cord included with the modem is not enough, you need to buy two RJ-45 plugs, a piece of UTP-8 cable of the required length and crimp the connectors yourself.

Straight cable crimping must be done taking into account the standard color distribution scheme for the connector pins

Network adapter settings

Almost any router also works as a DHCP server, that is, it distributes IP addresses to client devices. Addresses are issued from the range specified in the router settings. For this mechanism to work correctly, you must configure the network adapter to automatically obtain a TCP/IP address and DNS server. On portable devices, such as tablets and smartphones, automatic address acquisition is enabled by default, and to set the network interface to manual mode, you have to try hard. On computers under Windows control You may encounter a situation where a network adapter is assigned a static (permanent) address. This may lead to a conflict with another device on the network that receives the address automatically. The result will be loss of access to the Wi-Fi network (and the Internet too) on both devices.

To prevent this error from occurring, you need to check the properties wireless adapter and switch (if necessary) it to automatically receive addresses.

  1. Click on the “Start” button with the right mouse button and select “Network Connections” from the user menu.

After clicking on the “Start” button, a menu will appear in which you need to select “Network Connections”

  2. In the window network connections select required adapter and use the right mouse button to open its properties.

In properties network adapter contains TCP/IP protocol settings

  3. From the list of protocols, select TCP/IP and double-click to bring up its settings.

Computer IP address in local network and DNS server addresses are set in the TCP/IP protocol settings

  4. Configure to automatically obtain the network address and DNS server address and click OK.

Automatic receipt of addresses is set by selecting the appropriate items in the settings switches

Modem web interface, configuration and access protection

The modem's web interface, through which most of its settings are performed, is located at 192.168.1.1. The username is admin, and the default password is blank, meaning you do not need to enter it. To protect your network from third-party interference, change your access password immediately after initial setup modem

  1. Open the web interface by entering the address 192.168.1.1 in the Internet browser.
  2. Switch to advanced settings mode.

On home page The modem web interface contains quick settings and connection status

  3. In the “System” section, follow the “Administrator Password” link.

Access to system parameters hidden in advanced settings

  4. Enter your password and click the Apply button.

Enter New Password need twice to avoid accidental mistakes

Setting up an Internet connection and configuring WI-FI

Early versions of the router could only connect to an ADSL channel, and in order to use the services of a cable provider, a complicated OpenWRT firmware procedure and some soldering iron skills were required. The modern release does not require any “dancing with a tambourine” and allows you to configure any Ethernet port as an incoming WAN port.

Video: step-by-step setup of the D-LINK 2460U modem

Setting up a DSL connection via telephone cable

Creating an ADSL connection is replete with many settings, the meaning of which may not be clear to the average user. Therefore, it is better to install it through the wizard quick settings Click’n’Connect, which in automatic mode will test the telephone line, adjust the connection parameters to suit it, and all you have to do is enter your authorization parameters.

  1. Click the Click’n’Connect link on the main screen of the router’s web interface.
  2. Make sure that the telephone line-splitter-modem chain is connected and the DSL indicator on the panel is solid green.

Once you have checked all connections, click Next

  3. Select your connection type. In most cases this is PPPoE.

In the vast majority of cases, ADSL connections operate using the PPPoE protocol

  4. Select the ADSL interface port. When you first connect, the router creates and configures one port. You can use it.

Select the automatically created connection port

  5. Change the connection name to something more meaningful if you wish. Enter authorization parameters: login and password.
  6. Check the report on the settings made and click the “Apply” button in the lower right corner of the window.

Check the entered data and save changes

Setting up the Internet via an Ethernet cable

New modem-router firmwares have the standard ability to designate one of the four LAN ports as WAN port. This can be done using several simple steps. In our instructions, LAN port No. 4 will be configured as WAN.

  1. Connect your router to network port 1,2 or 3.
  2. Update your router firmware to the latest current version. You can download it from the D-LINK FTP server.
  3. Switch to advanced settings mode from the main screen

  4. In the "Advanced" section, select "Interface Grouping".

Go to the interface grouping window by clicking on the corresponding link

  5. Click on the image of the selected (fourth) LAN port with the mouse and from context menu select the “Make WAN” command. In the drop-down list at the bottom of the page, select “One service per connection” and click the “Save” button.

Select which network port to make WAN

  6. Go to the Network/WAN page and click the "Add" button. Set the required authorization protocol, enter the login and password received from the provider.
  7. Reboot the router and connect the ISP cable to LAN port No. 4.

Since this modem operation mode is still abnormal, when you turn on the device, a situation may arise in which the modem will assign IP addresses to clients on your network from the external network, and not from the DHCP server pool. In this case, there will be no access to the Internet, just as the local network will not work. To prevent this from happening, before turning on or restarting the modem-router, disconnect the Internet provider cable, and connect it back 15-20 seconds after the modem has already booted.

Video: setting up a 2640U modem to work with a cable provider

Setting up Wi-Fi (creating an access point, changing the password)

The second step after setting up a connection to the provider will be to turn on and configure the wireless access point, which will allow you to distribute the Internet to devices with WI-FI module: laptops, tablets, smartphones.

  1. Open an Internet browser and go to the router's web interface at 192.168.1.1.
  2. Click the "Advanced Settings" button.
  3. Make sure the wireless enable slider is in the green (on) position.

Make sure WI-FI mode enabled - this is indicated by the position of a special slider located at the top of the Wi-Fi button

  4. Open basic wireless settings. Here, set the name of the wireless network, broadcast channel, and the name of the guest network. Clients on the guest network will receive internet, but will not be able to connect to the local network.

Enter the SSID, select the broadcast channel and set the guest network name

  5. Return to the main screen and open your wireless security settings. In them, set the encryption type and password for accessing WI-FI.

Set the type of identification of network clients, and also create and enter an access password

  6. Back on the main screen, click on the save settings link on the right top corner.

When choosing a password for a wireless network, keep in mind that a long key increases the computational load on the router’s processor, the capabilities of which are not unlimited. The result can be a significant drop in network performance. The optimal key size is 8–13 characters.

Port forwarding (port mapping)

Some users need to access resources on their local network from the Internet. This may be required to organize access to home network folders, viewing images from a home IP camera, remote administration using Remote Administrator or Team Viewer programs and a dozen more necessary applications. To get this opportunity, you need to do the so-called port forwarding, when the router connects an external network port with a specific internal network port with a virtual cable. Setting up port forwarding is easy using the modem's web interface functions.

Open the settings menu virtual servers in the "Firewall" section

  • In the window with a list of reassigned ports, click the “Add” button.

A new request routing rule is entered using the “Add” button

  • In the port settings dialog, fill in the following fields sequentially:
  • Click the "Apply" button in the lower right corner of the screen.
  • Setting up a modem in bridge mode

Despite its rich functionality, DLINK DSL-2640U is more of a modem than a full-fledged router, its computing capabilities are low and connecting already three or four network clients can create problems with its performance. In this case, it makes sense to use a classic router of sufficient power to build a network, and switch the DSL-2640U into bridge mode and connect to it.

  • Set the Bridge connection type, DSL interface (new), set the VPI/VCI parameters according to the requirements of the Internet provider.

Set the connection type to Bridge - when you select this interface, the modem will switch to bridge mode

  • Returning to the list of connections, set the newly created Bridge connection to the default gateway.

    Make the created connection active

  • Connect one of the LAN ports of the modem and the WAN port of the router using a patch cord.
  • In the router's web interface, configure an Internet connection via the PPPoE protocol using the registration data of your account.
  • Possible problems with the router and their solutions

The DSL-2640U modem-router is an entry-level device positioned for home use. Operating the modem as a router-switch for a local network will create an increased load on its processor, which will lead to a decrease in performance and possible problems in the form of freezes, periodic shutdowns of WI-FI and even premature failure.

For a long time I had to use the DSL-2640U as a router in a small office. Four computers plus two network printer and the clients’ smartphones put an incredible load on it: the modem overheated and froze, every hour and a half it had to be turned off. The management did not want to install a new router - they were thrifty capitalists. I had to cut a round hole in the top cover of the modem and install a cooling fan from the faulty one. motherboard. Thermal conditions returned to normal, the router was able to operate without failures throughout the working day.

The D-LINK 2640U modem-router is a balanced and affordable solution for accessing the Internet using ADSL technology. If you don’t have enough Internet speed, and most importantly, you need the same high speeds both for downloading and uploading - it is worth thinking about switching to another provider that provides services over a twisted pair cable or an optical channel. Purchasing a more powerful ADSL router only makes sense if you need to create home network With a large number devices.

Rostelecom is the largest provider in the country. The device connected on the user side must be configured to the simplest protocol possible in the case of a “telephone cable”. It's about about the PPPoE protocol. It is not surprising that the simplest equipment works with this provider, including those offered by it. Let's look at how to configure the Rostelecom dsl 2640u router - one of such devices.

We're talking about a router here D-Link with the name dsl-2640u/NRU/C4. All devices with different number revisions – have differences in hardware. In addition, the “NRU” series has a specific interface option. However, the interface is most suitable for configuration under Rostelecom.

    Rear panel of the router

On the back of the device there is a “telephone port” (gray). Yellow ports are for connecting to a computer. We will now look at the sequence of connections in more detail.

Sequence of actions before setting up the device

    Connecting a router

The kit includes two cords: gray (telephone cable) and yellow (patch cord). Make connections as shown in the figure:

    Router connection diagram

The yellow port of the router must be connected to the connector network card, and the gray port, on the contrary, can only be connected to a “phone” (or splitter).

Having completed cable connections, connect the power supply. And right away, you need to check whether the network card is configured correctly:

Technology using this type connection is called ADSL2+. Currently, it is being replaced by more convenient and high-speed options, but in remote settlements it is still one of the main methods for wired connection to the World Wide Web. Let's take a closer look at the 2640U DSL router, which provides a wireless connection to the Internet.

The 2640U router is used only for ADSL connections.

There are four variations of this model available for purchase. Outwardly they are indistinguishable, the difference lies only in the options for hardware revisions. The DSL connection method is already outdated, but still relevant for remote villages.

It also has a wireless network connection feature. That is, it is used as a Wi-Fi device. The characteristics of the d-link 2640u dsl router are identical to other models from the xDSL segment.

The 2640U router interface does not contain USB connectors, which means there is no way to connect a 3G/4G modem to it or flash the firmware via a flash drive. It also does not support creating a VPN server, or using it as a torrent or DLNA server. It is not possible to make an individual configuration or change the assignment of buttons on the equipment.

    Appearance

The d-link 2640u DSL wi-fi modem is a black box with rounded edges. On the front side there are indicator lights with a signature indicating the operation of the current connection. The power jack and ports are on the back along with the single antenna.

The design is the same as most routers from the manufacturer.

The DSL equipment comes with all the necessary cables for installation. network device. Basic documentation and a configuration assistant are included on the included CD.

    Connection and preparation for work

Before setting up the d-link 2640u router, you need to connect it to electrical network. To do this, use the power adapter included in the kit. Insert the telephone cable connector into a special device - a splitter. It will allow you to divide the signal coming from the wire into two: the first is responsible for the telephone, and the second is for providing access to the Internet. The last step is connection network cable 2640u to the network port on the computer.

    Settings

There are two ways to configure a network device. Using the installation wizard from disk or through a browser in the router menu. Let's consider each of the options in more detail.

To set up dsl wireless router 2640u in automatic mode, you must first run the “Installation Wizard” included on the disk with the delivery kit. Next, you will need to select the country and organization that provides access services to the “global network”.

In the next step, you will need to specify the login and password provided by the provider when concluding the contract.

After this, the router will automatically perform the necessary actions.

Connecting to the Internet manually using the example of some providers

If the first option does not help, or the user prefers to perform the configuration independently, you must log in to the 2640U through a browser.

Now let's look at how to configure a dsl d-link 2640u router depending on the selected provider.

Set the Connection Type to PPPoE. Interface, or connection port, DSL (New). Name – enter any value. This is simply the name of the DSL connection being created.

    Section "ATM":

The meaning of the VPI and VCI fields responsible for the connection via the DSL line must be obtained from the provider. They are individual depending on the region of residence and the port on the service provider’s equipment. Leave the remaining fields unchanged.
